For being ‘unplugged’ in the acoustic sense, with the inclusion of solo cellist Nikos Veliotis, as well as Akis Zois of fellow forward-thinking Greek rockers Villagers of Ioannina City, one would hardly call 1000mods‘ acoustic take on “Lucid Dream,” based on “Lucid” from their most recent LP, 2020’s Youth of Dissent (review here) stripped down, sounding full in its melody and crisply produced as it does. It’s still a different vibe though from the album version and one wonders if they might bring that out live as well, but far be it from me to speculate.

In either case, anything that positions 1000mods as a more dynamic act at this point is gravy, since their sound has continually progressed from one record to the other, and as they’ve moved into veteran status and maintained their hold as one of the vibrant Greece underground’s most crucial exports, an experiment like this can only lead to further exploration of cool ideas. That is to say, from what I can tell without having an Apple Music or a Deezer account, “Lucid Dream” sounds pretty right on.

This coming week, 1000mods and undervalued Austin, Texas, trio The Well will begin an extensive tour together at Desertfest Berlin 2022 that will last them through the Sound of Liberation anniversary shinding in the German spa town of Wiesbaden. Certainly an occasion for breaking out a new track and catching eyes and ears of your listenership, as if you needed an excuse.

Also, I like how in their post they say, “it has always been challenging for us to turn off the amps.” Fair enough, guys.

Desertfest London 2022, has concocted the kind of lineup that you daydreamed about for the last two years. Adding 1000mods, Greenleaf, DVNE, Ritual King, Shooting Daggers, Old Horn Tooth and Personal Hell doesn’t hurt in that regard, and even at the cost of C.O.C. and others, I still can’t imagine anyone is gonna look at this lineup and call bullshit. Josiah headlining The Black Heart? YOB at the Roundhouse? Orange Goblin after Earthless at The Electric Ballroom? Holy mackerel. What more could you possibly want?

And if you say C.O.C., you’re missing the point.

It doesn’t look like I’m going to be there, as I was hoping to be, but if you are, you have my jealousy. If you’ll pardon me, I need to go change a diaper. Life.

Pick your poison here, it’s all killer. Makes sense when you think about it, too. If you’ve been waiting to have a party for two years, don’t you want to do it up? Thus it is that Sound of Liberation‘s plague-delayed 15th anniversary celebrations have become 17th anniversary celebrations — and frankly, having survived those extra two years is no mean feat either for a booking concern, or, you know, anyone — and the parties will be held June 10-11 in Munich and June 24-25 in Wiesbaden, Germany.

Simply put, the lineups aren’t fucking around. Colour Haze, Fu Manchu, High on Fire, 1000mods, Elder, Ufomammut, My Sleeping Karma, Yawning Man, Monkey3, The Well, Toundra, Villagers of Ionnina City, DVNE, Slomosa, Stoned Jesus, Lucid Void, and more to be announced. That pushes beyond “killer party” and into “this is actually a festival” territory, and after so much delay, I seriously doubt any of the concerned parties have a problem with that.

These will be significant evenings. If you’re going, drink it in.

High on Fire, “Speedwolf” live in Los Angeles, Aug. 23, 2021

Sound of Liberation will host its first-ever A Day in Smoke mini-festival on April 30 in Pratteln, Switzerland. The venue, Z7, should be familiar if you’ve heard of the Up in Smoke fest that takes place there annually each Fall. A Day in Smoke, then, is an all-dayer that’s got names that will be likewise familiar if you’ve heard of either that fest or others in the Sound of Liberation booking sphere. Let me put it this way. If you’ve made it this far into the post without putting down your phone, I’m going to trust that you know what I’m talking about here.

A Day in Smoke was originally set for this past December but then blah blah. It’s April 30, and that seems like a right-now-likely-to-happen kind of thing. The first lineup announcement has a couple heavy-hitters in 1000mods, Colour Haze and Villagers of Ionnina City and with more to come, I know No Mute but I’m curious to check out Velvet Two Stripes and Meloi. Maybe you’ll be too.

Colour Haze, Live at Salzburg Rockhouse, Sept. 19, 2021

Ayo, good bands touring. Greek heavy rock forerunners 1000mods hit the road at last in support of 2020’s Matt Bayles-produced Youth of Dissent (review here), and they’re importing Austin, Texas, trio The Well for support. 1000mods will be at Desertfest in London and Sound of Liberation‘s A Day in Smoke (sit tight, details forthcoming) the next night in April, and then both bands will appear at Desertfest Berlin, Sound of Liberation‘s 17th anniversary party in Munich, and a ton of familiar venues on the circuit like Arena Wien in Vienna and Gaswerk in Winterthur, Switzerland, among others. Ending the tour at the SOL anniversary show — delayed by two years — is a nice touch. No doubt that’ll be a killer time.

The Well‘s last album was 2019’s Death and Consolation (review here), which cemented them as undervalued in my mind. Perhaps bringing that material out again on an extended-feeling European tour will help them hammer the point home. Also curious how 1000mods might go over, considering the somewhat shaky reception the cleaner sound of Youth of Dissent received, and, of course, if either act has new material they’ll take out on the road.

The Well, Death and Consolation (2019)

Tickets are on sale as of today for Desertfest Berlin 2022, which will be headlined by Electric Wizard, Kadavar playing a hometown show and Witchcraft. The rest of the lineup is a thrilling combination of mainstays — which somehow feels extra comforting — and upstarts, plus Stöner, who are kind of both, I guess, being a new band but with Brant Bjork and Nick Oliveri at the helm thereof. You’ll note Lowrider and Orange Goblin — the latter celebrating their 25th anniversary, delayed of course — and Elder and Ufomammut (debuting their new lineup), 1000mods and Truckfighters and My Sleeping Karma. Could hardly get more Desertfest than that. Like a reaffirmation of the festival’s core mission. Plus YOB, for extra life-giving vibes.

And with those, you get acts like Slomosa, Slift, Polymoon and Villagers of Ioannina City, underground celebrants like Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs and Samavayo and Dhidalah and MaidaVale and 24/7 Diva Heaven as well as Love Machine, Los Bitchos and Huntsmen. There’s reportedly more to come — and by that I mean that’s what it says on the poster below — but for real, if this was the four days, I can’t imagine wanting to see any less than all of it.

Desertfest Berlin 2019 official aftermovie

Big update from Desertfest Belgium 2021. After recently unveiling some cancelations and following up with a list of the precautionary measures being taken to deal with happening during a pandemic, the Antwerp and Ghent-based editions of the festival both receive a round of lineup additions. Greece’s 1000mods will take part in both, while the likes of Electric Moon and Stoned Jesus join Ghent, and Monkey3 and Slift and Temple Fang confirmed for Antwerp. I’m not sure ultimately how many acts the two Desertfest Belgiums — Belgii? — will share between them, but with Ghent happening on one day and Antwerp happening across three, there’s bound to be significant variation. Looks like that’s happening here already, and take note of Ohio’s Frayle making the trip for Ghent. Hope they can get out of the US to make it in time, or that the EU hasn’t banned our infectious asses by then.

It’s nice to think about these things every day, isn’t it? Doesn’t it just feel like the way humanity was meant to live? Not at all a drain on one’s entire being.

Strap in folks, because this is going to be a ride.. after all the hassle with COVID and cancels, let’s have some great to even greater news about both festivals shall we? We have a whole slew of names for you and if we may say so ourselves: we’re positively STOKED about all of these. Scene favourites, new and upcoming acts, local gems to discover.. we have it all. Here we go!

First of all: the Greek stoner sensation 1000MODS will be playing Antwerp as well as Ghent. We love ‘em, you love ‘em, their mother loves ‘em – everybody loves ‘em, okay! They need no further introduction so let’s move on to another favourite that will grace the stage in Ghent: STONED JESUS is coming to town, and you all know what that means. Killer grooves and a mighty good time. We’re also extremely excited to have DELVING on board which is the new project of ELDER frontman Nick DiSalvo. This will be one of their first shows after the album dropped in June, and we can already tell you this one’s gonna be something special.

Moving on to Antwerp, we’re looking forward to revisit the audiovisual extravaganza of MONKEY3 who completely killed it at our last edition. For more spaced-out craziness, YURI GAGARIN is always a safe choice so let’s go with that. With VILLAGERS OF IOANNINA CITY we have the second Greek band on the bill, with a more leftfield sound but no less essential.

SonicBlast Fest announced its 2021 edition was being postponed at the end of the month, and already they’re turning around and making a first announcement for 2022. That’s kind of comforting. Some of these acts — looking at you, Psychlona — have been waiting to play the Portugal-based festival since being announced for 2020 — but barring disaster, there’s a reasonable expectation that 2022 might be a return year, so in addition to them, SonicBlast Fest 2022 is rolling out the formidable likes of Green Lung, Electric Wizard, Pentagram, Weedeater, 1000mods, The Machine, Samavayo, The Devil and the Almighty Blues, Tia Carrera, Slift, and a ton of others with more to come. If you’re going to do a thing, get in there and do it.

Tickets are on sale now, or if you’ve already got them either for 2020 or 2021, they’ll carry over. 2020 was supposed to be my year to hit this fest, as well as a whole bunch of others. So it goes. If you make it to Âncora for the three-dayer next August, you go with my respect and admiration, and no shortage of jealousy.
