Connecticut-based heavy rock and rollers Bone Church will issue their second long-player, Deliverance, through Ripple Music on Oct. 24. The dudely five-piece are streaming lead single “Bone Boys Ride Out” now, which emphasizes punch and push as one might hope for its three and a half minutes, conveying energy as well as craft. The band are veterans of Ripplefest Texas (twice over, I think?) and have already been confirmed to appear at Planet Desert Rock Weekend VI next January in Las Vegas, so it seems fair to expect more live announcements to come, if not before the Southwest trip in the New Year, then likely around that.

The PR wire brought info and the song that heavy enough I needed to restart my laptop to hear it. It’s not every riff goes around busting technology. Have at it:

Written primarily in 2019 and 2020, this record trades their debut’s doom-laden expectations for soaring, blues-soaked riffs and sing-along choruses. “You’ll still hear the Sabbath influence, but you’ll also hear ZZ Top, the Allman Brothers, Santana, and Lynyrd Skynyrd, to name a few. These songs are meant to be sung along to,” says lead guitarist Dan Sefcik.

Lyrically, Bone Church remains steeped in their signature themes—apocalyptic visions, Luciferian power struggles, and the eternal battle between light and dark—but this time, they balance the weight with raucous tales of life on the road and the pure, uncomplicated joy of rock ‘n’ roll. “We’ve juxtaposed those heavy themes with lighthearted fun as well. We didn’t want this record to be all doom and gloom. Overall, we think it’s our best work yet,” he adds.

“Deliverance” is a thunderous exorcism, a Molotov cocktail hurled at the gates of genre. Bone Church never bowed to the rules, and now? They’re torching the rulebook entirely. Crank it. Howl along. This is their reckoning and it’s coming this fall on Ripple Music!

Bone Church, Deliverance (2025)

As somebody who’s been lucky enough to see the Olso-based troupe on stage, The Devil and the Almighty Blues are dead on. The groove, the bluesy vibe. Absolutely stellar pick on the part of Planet Desert Rock Weekend. Salt the frickin’ earth. They’re gonna kill it, whatever stage they’re on. Fingers crossed it’s Count’s Vamp’d, but I’ll take it either way. And yeah, I do have every intention of being back in Vegas next January for Planet Desert Rock Weekend VI.

In what would be an astonishing circumstance at nearly every other US heavyfest, The Devil and the Almighty Blues aren’t the only Norwegian band on this bill, as Saint Karloff were previously confirmed, and they’re paired in this announcement with Bone Church, from Connecticut. As it’s been five years since the classic metal/heavy rockers issued their Acid Communion LP, one can’t help but wonder if they’ll have a record between now and early next year — though honestly, with PDRW, it might just be a case of festival director John Gist digging the band. It’s not always about promoting the thing (whatever ‘the thing’ is) at PDRW, and I like that about it.

To wit, I would not expect a The Devil and the Almighty Blues record in 2025 — though I’ll say it’s not impossible in case one happens, just to cover my ass — but I’ll be goddamned if they won’t be a highlight of 2026’s edition.

For those that have kept up some with the PDRW VI lineup you can see we have quite a few international bands announced so far with many of which will be coming over for the 1st time to the USA. Of course, at PDRW we like to deliver really good bands that are at times a bit under the radar currently. We believe strongly that the music matters the most and songs are important. With the abundance of bands out there we hand select bands we believe in that if more folks hear them that they will resonate with many of our super cool rockers that attend Planet Desert Rock. Next year one such band is Bone Church out of Connecticut. Truth be told from very early on I have championed the band. A few years back Todd Severin and Ripple Music snagged them, they delivered a follow up to their very good debut with a super strong album. After seeing them at the 1st Ripplefest Texas, I was simply blown away by their performance. This is one of the semi rare bands that has a pure frontman who only sings and damn if he doesn’t kill it live. The whole band sounded fantastic and the memory of that performance still is one of a tight set and full-on energy. Their Sabbath drenched sounded is melded with other influences to create songs that will ear worm ya if you aren’t careful. I have previewed some new tracks and it’s so good!

Planet Desert Rock Weekend VI Preview Playlist

This is one of the best lineups I’ve seen for a US-based heavy fest in the 15-plus years I’ve been running this site. I don’t know what else to say about it, honestly. For the fact that Ripplefest Texas is bringing Dozer over alone, let alone any of the other Euro acts involved who have, say, been to North America in the last 20-plus years, it’s astonishing. And not just bigger bands like Dozer and Truckfighters or Mars Red Sky and Belzebong, but Domkraft and Kal-El, bands you know if you’re into this thing but that haven’t been around as long and aren’t as ‘huge’ in the whatever sense that applies in underground music.

And it’s not like they’re skimping on within-US geography either. Of course the desert is well represented, and Texas has a significant presence as it invariably would, but with Gozu and Leather Lung headed out from Boston, Borracho traveling from D.C., Temple of the Fuzz Witch from Michigan, Robots of the Ancient World from Portland, Oregon, and so on, they’ve got all the corners and between pretty well covered. La Chinga coming from Canada. Demons My Friends giving Mexico a nod. It is extensive.

And quality. I don’t know that I’ll be there to see it, but I’d imagine that for most who get to be, it’ll be the stuff of legend. Congrats to Ryan Garney and Lick of My Spoon for bringing it into the world, and safe travels to all involved:

Mars Red Sky, Live at Rock in Bourlon 2023

This past weekend was Ripplefest Texas, and I gotta say, even having gone to a fest last friggin’ week, I was looking hard at that lineup and thinking to myself it’d be awfully nice to see a whole bunch of West Coast acts I don’t normally see. Maybe next year.

Wait, who’s thinking about next year when the festival is barely done? They are. Ripplefest Texas 2024 is bringing over Dozer and Mars Red Sky — oh I hope they tour together — and will have The Skull-offshoot Legions of Doom, Boston’s Gozu, The Heavy Eyes, High Desert Queen, Bone Church, Blue Heron, Demons My Friends and, as you might guess looking at the packed lineup that was assembled for this year’s event, many more to come.

Honestly, you had me at either Dozer or Mars Red Sky, but the appeal here goes well beyond those, and in a US festival sphere reeling without a major summer event or two this year it’s gotten pretty used to having around, Ripplefest seems to be stepping in at least to give the heavy rock end of the underground somewhere to flourish. I’ll be interested to see in the next two or three years how it will continue to grow, but also just for next year. I’d imagine there’s a whole bunch of people who’ve already made their travel plans to get to Austin. Can’t say I really blame you.

More to come as we get closer to a year from now, obviously, but they’re throwing down. Pretty sure those earlybird tickets are gone:

Dozer, “Rising” live at Desertfest Berlin 2023

Back for its second year and with a fourth day in tow, Ripplefest Texas 2022 confirms its full lineup, a total beast of legends and newcomers. Really, I don’t even know what to say here except that if you’re lucky enough to go, it’s probably the kind of thing you’re going to remember for a long gosh-darn time, and it’s the kind of lineup that serves as lording-over fodder on the part of those who were there to those who weren’t. Well, at least it would if the heavy underground weren’t too cool to each other for that kind of gatekeeping nonsense. In any case, this looks like a massive undertaking to put on, and the roster of assembled acts gets a hearty ‘fucking a’ from my corner of the universe.

Tickets for all four days will run you $150, but I feel like the festival earns that on both quality and quantity of product.

Lo-Pan, Live at the Grog Shop, Cleveland, Ohio, Feb 18, 2022

Good bill here. I assure you, I’m just about the last person you want to ask concerning anything to do with craft beer — even when I drank I was never that cool — but band-wise, you’ve got a lineup for Doom and Brews III that spans a decent portion of the Eastern Seaboard from the Mid-Atlantic up into New England and beyond. Indianapolis’ Void King will travel the farthest, while Yatra, from Maryland, and Book of Wyrms, from Richmond, Virginia, are set to headline, and alongisde Connecticut natives Curse the Son, Pinto Graham, Afghan Haze, Entierro, Bone Church and Mourn the Light, Clamfight, Thunderbird Divine, The Age of Truth and Almost Honest will be up from PA and Mother Iron Horse and Conclave come south from Massachusetts. Yatra, All is Lost (2020)

Nashville progressive heavy rockers Howling Giant are set to tour around their appearance at RippleFest Texas 2021, and they’ll have good company in Bone Church, High Desert Queen and Thunder Horse as they make the trip. You’ll also note that the first gig is at the Freetown Boom Boom Room, which is basically the homebase of Forming the Void — also playing RippleFest TX — so it doesn’t seem unlikely that there might be others showing up at one or another of these dates as well. Maybe playing, maybe hanging out, maybe it’s a big ol’ sweatydudeparty in and around New Braunfels that week. I don’t know. I ain’t gonna be out here trying to predict the weather.

Howling Giant recently released their Alteration EP and as they say below, are at some stage or other in the writing of their next, second, full-length album. It boggles my mind these dudes have one LP. They’re such an established act in my mind. I guess that’s what happens when a band works its collective ass off. They’re looking to get back out in 2022 to tour and do more of the same. They’re just crazy enough to do it, too.

Howling Giant, Alteration EP (2021)

This is an in-person event. Feels weird even saying that, but also refreshing in a way. Set for Aug. 7 at the Texas Ski Ranch in New Braunfels — between San Antonio and Austin, if you’re looking to fly in — the upcoming RippleFest Texas 2021 purports to be the first in an ongoing annual series, and that’s a hell of a time to make a debut. Early, but I have no doubt they’ll get people out for it. Shit, I’d go.

The first lineup announcement — more to come, reportedly — brings Void Vator, Bone Church, Witchcryer, Holy Death Trio, Thunder Horse and Switchblade Jesus to the bill, and leaves plenty of room for speculation on others. Of course, Texas is awash in bands, now as ever. Would Mothership headline in a triumphant return? What about the more recent offshoot of that band and Destroyer of Light, Temple of Love who premiered a Deep Purple cover here not so long ago? That’d be a cool first gig, even if they’re not signed to Ripple (yet).

Like I said, lots of room for speculation. One way or another, though, I know a party when I see one, and this looks like a party. Not sure I’d bring a swimsuit — pandemic beach body? that’s a hard pass — but I’d definitely bring earplugs enough to share.
