Red Sun Atacama Sign to Mrs Red Sound; New Album Later This Year

Posted in Whathaveyou on January 28th, 2022 by JJ Koczan

Granted, it’d be a hoot to tell you that I knew all along that this announcement was coming when I posted the Obelisk Questionnaire last week with Red Sun Atacama bassist/vocalist Clément Marquez, but the wretched truth is I’m not that coordinated. That questionnaire had been waiting to run for about two months, so obviously if anyone was thinking ahead, it was Marquez himself and not me.

Either way, kudos to him and to bandmates Vincent Hospital (guitar/keys) and Robin Caillon (drums) on inking with Mrs Red Sound, which is of course the label founded in 2013 by French heavy psych magnates Mars Red Sky. And while that band are also due a new long-player, word that Red Sun Atacama will release a follow-up to 2018’s Licancabur (review here) sometime later this year is also definitely welcome.

No real details on that yet, but I guess one thing at a time. The signing announcement follows accordingly, hoisted from the PR wire:

RED SUN ATACAMA sign to Mrs Red Sound Records for the release of their upcoming album on 2022

Desert punk outfit RED SUN ATACAMA are now officially part of Mrs Red Sound Records, the label founded by French heavy psychedelic band Mars Red Sky. They inked a deal with the cosmic house to release their sophomore album.

Paris-based desert punk trio RED SUN ATACAMA join Mrs Red Sound’s forces and announce a new album for 2022: “We are ecstatic to announce our signing with Mrs Red Sound for the release of our upcoming album! We are delighted to join this great household, already known for supporting rad bands of the French scene: Dätcha Mandala, Witchfinder, Baron Crane and Little Jimi. We can’t hardly wait to share more info on the upcoming release recorded at the Apiary studio by el magó Amaury Sauvé, prepare for some vitriolic boogie vibes!”

Spread through the impetuous fuzz of Californian legends Fu Manchu, Kyuss or Brant Bjork, RED SUN ATACAMA praise the burning sound of the desert and the Holy Groove with irresistible slashing riffs. Volcanic and wild, the Atacama Desert mesmerizes the band as much as it inspires them. Their sound is driven by its beyond compare magnetism.

Born in 2014 in Paris, RED SUN ATACAMA combines desert rock psychedelia and punk fury. They auto-produced their first EP ‘Part 1’ in 2015, and released a bubbling debut album, ‘Licancabur’, in 2018 via More Fuzz Records. The record definitely establishes the trio’s unique, raw and insolent style. On stage, Red Sun Atacama fully manage to share the same hypnotic outburst than on their studio efforts: they already performed in various European countries alongside international heavyweights such as Uncle Acid And The Dead Beats, Mars Red Sky, Planet of Zeus, Steak, Slift…

For their second album, Red Sun Atacama chose to work with producer Amaury Sauvé at Apiary studio; it’s coming out on 2022 via Mrs Red Sound Records.

Samavayo Post Video for New Single “Afghan Sky” Feat. Nick DiSalvo

Posted in Bootleg Theater on January 28th, 2022 by JJ Koczan

Samavayo

Berlin three-piece Samavayo have unveiled the first single from the forthcoming Pāyān LP in a new video. “Afghan Sky” is the first audio I’ve heard from Pāyān — which is out March 25 through Noisolution — and, uh, it’s pretty sick. This is going to sound weird to say, but I always kind of forget how much I actually like Samavayo. I post a fair amount about them, updates and whatnot, and I talk to frontman Behrang Alavi on the regular, usually when I’m bugging him about something site-related since a few years back when he generously offered to host The Obelisk — efforts on his part that are continually appreciated — but, well, I dug Samavayo a lot before then, as the review archive shows — 2018’s Vatan (review here) was preceded by 2016’s Dakota (review here), 2012’s Soul Invictus, etc. back to their 2005 Nasoni-delivered debut, Deathmarchmelodies! — and I continue to dig them a lot now.

Among the more admirable threads they’ve woven through their career is a willingness to be brazenly political in a relatively conservative underground. Guess what “Afghan Sky” is about. It’s about the fucking sky in Afghanistan, under which my home country, the US, waged 20 years of needless war in order to… ?… before abandoning the population to their fate under a quickly-established Taliban rule the oppression of which was one of the several things we claimed to be fighting against. My generation fought that war. It was pointless, a war of aggression in response to a single attack the effects of which will continue to ripple out through the decades that will comprise the rest of my life and probably beyond that, like Vietnam for the generation before mine. Like whatever the next war will be 10 years from now. Russia? China? Some proxy invasion? That second civil war that keeps getting teased in the newspapers?

Look. Before I go way off any further on social issues — there are so many, so shitty, for so many — the point I was making was that Samavayo measure the stakes of playing it safe vs. saying what they want to say and choose the latter. That is deeply worthy of respect in itself, but the song’s also killer. Alavi‘s vocals have grown more confident in melody over the last half-decade, and he nails the hook in “Afghan Sky” with apparent ease while still pushing himself in a way that underscores the passion with which the lyrics are written. Meanwhile, it’s a suitably brotherly chemistry between drummer Stephen Voland and bassist Andreas Voland (both also contribute vocals) that set the urgent groove in motion, and there’s a guest spot from Elder‘s Nick DiSalvo that adds a classic-style guitar solo for emphasis.

Solid, front to back. The clip can be found below, having been premiered the other day. The lyrics have subtitles as well, so you can follow along.

Dig it:

Samavayo, “Afghan Sky” official video

We are proudly presenting our 1st single Afghan Sky of the upcoming new album “PĀYĀN” released in March 25th 2022 on Noisolution records. Featuring Nick DiSalvo (Elder, Delving), who played a guitar solo in Afghan Sky.

“The song Afghan Sky is about the capture of Afghanistan by the Taliban in 2021”, Behrang Alavi, singer and guitarist of Samavayo says. “It is about the failure of the rest of the world to save the Afghan people and about their fears and horror, so much that people would hold onto a plane to escape and fall down from the sky of Afghanistan. I chose the topic because it makes me sick – I lived in Kabul before the 1990s, before the Taliban conquered the city. Afghanistan is a country that has suffered for decades and is left so alone by the rest of the world at such a crucial moment.”

“The solo in the song Afghan Sky is kind of special for a Samavayo song, as we usually don’t have specific solo-parts in our song. We invited Nick DiSalvio, a friend of ours, known from bands such as Elder or Delving to play it.”

It is the first time we have worked together with palantirvisuals (https://www.palantirvisuals.com, well known for great videos for Elder, Delving and Eldovar) and it has been an amazing experience! We are very happy with the result and looking forward to future collaborations.

It’s also the first time that we have put subtitles on a video. It was important for us, because of the message of the song. Also it has been exciting to find many different languages among our friends and network. In the end we managed to add 18 languages including Persian, Hindi, Pashtu, Arab, Vietnamese and many more.

Elder Druid Post Carcosa Album Art and Details

Posted in Whathaveyou on January 28th, 2022 by JJ Koczan

Even if one might accuse Belfast unit Elder Druid of jumping the gun a bit in posting the album art and tracklisting of their new album before they’re finished recording it, mixing or mastering, it’s easy enough to understand why they might be excited-about-a-thing when you look at the Serpent Tusk Studio front cover for the impending release. Factor in as well that it was nearly a year ago that the follow-up to 2020’s Golgotha (review here) was first announced along with their signing to Interstellar Smoke Records, and alright, yeah, fair enough. There’s only so much sitting on hands one can reasonably be expected to do, especially when one is passionate about the work in question, which we already know Elder Druid are. Stick that in your marketing plan.

Carcosa will be out whenever it’s out — I’m told time is a flat circle anyhow, so whatever — and in the interim, an update is welcome. Not quite done, but coming together on multiple fronts, and the cover rules. Until I can actually hear the thing, that’s good enough for me.

Video Premiere: Carcaño, ‘Live at Ecolandia Park 2021’ Full Set

Posted in Bootleg Theater on January 28th, 2022 by JJ Koczan

carcano

Italian heavy psychedelic fuzzbringers Carcaño released their second album, By Order of the Green Goddess (review here), through respected purveyors Clostridium Records in early 2021. It looks like it was a warm, sunny day that the Reggio Calabria four-piece took to Parco Ecolandia — Ecolandia Park — in order to record a live set in an amphitheater carved into a hill. Sunny enough that the sound recording gear of Ottavio Leo is tucked away back under an umbrella for shade, in any case. As it’s currently well below freezing where I am and the boiler clicked off for some reason last night, I’ll note that the apparent warmth is perhaps a bit more of an escape from winter as I wait for the heat to come back on.

The group — guitarists Elmore Penoise (also vocals and synth) and El Pez, bassist/synthesist Ugo “The Doc” and drummer Max “The Mind” — are spread out across a kind of makeshift stage, playing tracks from the record like the languid, exploratory feeling “I Don’t Belong Here” or the more raucous opener “Riding Space Elephants,” which kind of is what it sounds like. They had previously posted “Riding Space Elephants” from the set, which is reasonable considering the quality they were able to capture in sound and video, but the full 28-minute stretch hasn’t been unveiled until now. Fancy.

Grooves abound, heavy abounds, space abounds. Abound abounds. In a manner wholly unpretentious, the band put their listener in a nodding mindset while a multi-camera, drone-inclusive shoot cycles through one shot to the next, edited in rhythm but not necessarily locked to the changes of each song; more concert film than music video. In the age of livestreams, etc., Carcaño represent themselves and the album well, and if you ever wanted an advertisement for the kind of fun you might have been a heavy rock or heavy psych drummer, look no further than Max “The Mind”. He’s putting in work, no doubt about it, but golly he looks like he’s having a good time doing it. And bonus points for the Neurosis shirt, dude. Do it in style.

If you haven’t heard By Order of the Green Goddess, it’s streaming below in full. Tracks there are organized by “Day” — “Day 1…” “Day 2…” and so on — whereas the live set seems to dispense with that, but everything the band plays comes from the latest album, so the clip is a cool way to get introduced in any case. Certainly beats working on a lazy Friday.

Enjoy:

Recorded Live at Ecolandia Park

From https://turismo.reggiocal.it/: “Air, fire, water, and earth. These four elements identify the technological environmental amusement park called Ecolandia. It is a place where the beauty of the landscape blends with important activities that promote culture, social interaction, and the environment. Hence, therefore, the reference to the four thematic areas as ideal links to Greek mythology on the one hand, and, on the other, to a model of sustainable and participatory development.”

Mike Scheidt Announces Collaboration with Composer James Romig The Complexity of Distance

Posted in Whathaveyou on January 27th, 2022 by JJ Koczan

I’m not going to sit here and pretend to be familiar with James Romig‘s work prior to this. Believe it or not, I just don’t run in the circles of compositional/classical academia, but when it’s YOB guitarist/vocalist Mike Scheidt playing what would seem to be a massive, nearly-hour-long work for solo drone guitar, chances are I’m going to check it out. Titled The Complexity of Distance — the advent of ‘plague era’ titles is amazing; someone get a listicle going — there’s no set release date yet, but maybe by the end of this year it could show up? I don’t know that either and while I’m not feeling like pretending, I won’t pretend I do.

It’s cool to see Scheidt talking about taking lessons and learning new elements of his craft in order to interpret Romig‘s composition though. That kind of thing can have an impact of course on Scheidt‘s own work as well, and one wonders if it might. I recall when dude learned finger-picking, it was like a bomb went off in my brain. Kaboom.

Scheidt posted thusly about the collaboration on social media:

James Romig and Mike Scheidt The Complexity of Distance

I haven’t posted much here in awhile. Time to post some news I’m pretty excited about!

In 2018 I was lucky enough to meet a composer by the name of James Romig. He’s a classical composer and music professor at Western Illinois University. One of his recent compositions for solo piano, “Still”, was a Pulitzer finalist in 2019. Around that time he asked me if I’d be interested in performing and recording a new piece that he’d compose for me for solo distorted guitar, somewhat in the vein of Sunn O))), but really its own thing. My answer was yes, of course!

After receiving the score I spent the better part of 2021 taking lessons with my friend and fabulous guitarist Jake Pavlak, learning how to read Romig’s composition, how to count the beats, and how articulate the 20+ different chord voicings. In October I walked into Gung-Ho Studio to work with Billy Barnett (who’s worked on 6 out of 8 of YOB’s albums) and together with James (remotely), Jake Pavlak, and Billy, we recorded “The Complexity Of Distance.” It turned out great!

It’s monolithic, clocking in at 58 minutes. Romig’s website is https://www.jamesromig.com/tcod.html for a more detailed look at his work (he’s also on Instagram and Facebook). There is also a sample of the new piece on Youtube (a link is in the comments). I’m so grateful to have the opportunity to work with James! We do not have a release date as of yet, but I’ll have more to share on that front this year. Maybe soon. Until then, much love to you and yours. Cheers!

Somnuri Touring with Plague Years in March

Posted in Whathaveyou on January 27th, 2022 by JJ Koczan

Somnuri

A bit of should-I-shouldn’t-I when it comes to posting these Somnuri tour dates, to be honest. The Brooklyn torchbearers or post-metallic sludge noise are headed out with Plague Years in March, and that’s super as their album which you can stream in its entirety below is a cause well worth supporting, but inevitably in putting this together my head turns to the hometown show and would I go and probably not because my head’s not there yet and what if my head’s never there again and what happens if I get sick and die painfully and alone in some hospital surrounded by passive aggressive nurses who a little bit think I deserve the death being dealt because I’m fat and stupid and if only I’d gotten a seventh shot — I’ve had three, so I’m on my way — I wouldn’t be getting these just desserts. And no one will care except for 30 seconds on the stoner rock internet before they remember that there are infinity other blogs and that YouTube and Spotify playlists are better anyway and the last thing my son will have said to me is “I don’t love you” which is how he greets me every morning now and I deserve that too because I guess sometimes I make him put on shoes and that’s a dick move anyway and maybe if I’d gone running around the block yesterday afternoon instead of popping half a xanax after the bus came I’d live forever and both justify the hazelnut and pecan butter I ate last night and be worthy in the eyes of the people I love so desperately in my own father’s sad and broken way instead of watching, exhausted and a little addled, each evening as I hit the THC dripper and beg my brain for a little bit of reprieve.

Then I weighed that against Somnuri being a good band and I decide to post the dates anyway. “For real life,” as they say on Bluey.

From the PR wire:

Somnuri Plague Years tour

SOMNURI announce US co-headlining tour with Plague Years; ‘Nefarious Wave’ out now on Blues Funeral Recordings.

New York acclaimed progressive sludge metal trio SOMNURI return to the stage on a US co-headlining tour with Denver death-thrash unit Plague Years from March 4th through March 24th, 2022.

Hailing from Brooklyn, NYC, SOMNURI create a melodic whirlwind of progressive sludge and post-hardcore tinged with black metallic blasts that share DNA with High on Fire, Mastodon, Baroness and Torche. A sprawling record full of time shifts and burning ambition, their 2021 sophomore album ‘Nefarious Wave’ is a snapshot of survival and resilience in the band’s native Brooklyn, full of stark brutality and spacious hush.

3/20/2022 Boggs – Atlanta, GA
3/22/2022 Kung Fu Necktie – Philadelphia, PA
3/24/2022 Kingsland – Brooklyn, NY

SOMNURI self-released an ambitious and well-received debut LP in 2017, earning high marks, and powered ahead with a series of blistering shows. The arrival of bassist Philippe Arman in 2019 seemed to complete the band at last, with the addition of live vocal harmonies and slick yet thunderous low-end. A sprawling record full of time and tempo shifts, their sophomore album ‘Nefarious Wave’ is a story of survival and resilience. As naysayers flee the city, claiming the scene is dead and will never be what it used to be, SOMNURI is alive, breathing, adapting and mutating into something greater, and continues to push the possibilities of heavy music and the ideals of how a DIY band fights for their place. Watch their latest videos “Beyond Your Last Breath”, “Tooth & Nail” and “Desire Lines”, “In The Grey”.

Their new album ‘Nefarious Wave’ is out now on CD and limited vinyl edition via Blues Funeral Recordings, and on digital format via Bandcamp.

The Obelisk Questionnaire: Ricardo Siqueira of Brainscanner

Posted in Questionnaire on January 27th, 2022 by JJ Koczan

Ricardo Siqueira of Brainscanner

The Obelisk Questionnaire is a series of open questions intended to give the answerer an opportunity to explore these ideas and stories from their life as deeply as they choose. Answers can be short or long, and that reveals something in itself, but the most important factor is honesty.

Based on the Proust Questionnaire, the goal over time is to show a diverse range of perspectives as those who take part bring their own points of view to answering the same questions. To see all The Obelisk Questionnaire posts, click here.

Thank you for reading and thanks to all who participate.

The Obelisk Questionnaire: Ricardo Siqueira of Brainscanner

How do you define what you do and how did you come to do it?

I play guitar and sing on a Stoner Rock band that I like to think it’s not “only” a Stoner Rock band. We try hard to not repeat ourselves and bring something new to the table every time we are writing a new song. I love Sabbath’s riffs just as much as the next guy, but honestly this is not the only thing I listen to, so I want my music to reflect it.

Describe your first musical memory.

My dad listening to The Rolling Stones. I remember him listening a lot to “Bridges To Babylon” when it came out, like he does every time they release something.

Describe your best musical memory to date.

Having former Beaver guitarist Joszja Dibbes to play a kickass lead on our song “Phoneutria” in 2018. Beaver is one of my all time favorite bands and having him to play on my song really blew my mind! I’m really proud of how the song turned out.

When was a time when a firmly held belief was tested?

A lot lately, but I can’t think in any in a musical context.

Where do you feel artistic progression leads?

Being more satisfied with what you are doing. I like every song I recorded with every band I played, but the more I write and record, the better I like the outcome.

How do you define success?

Being proud of what you did. If my songs are sounding like I wanted or my band played a good gig, I believe it is success.

What is something you have seen that you wish you hadn’t?

A lot in the last few years. Elections, the pandemic, relatives and idols dying…

Describe something you haven’t created yet that you’d like to create.

We are finishing our first full-length album and we got a split [out now]. We are also writing some other songs, but I’d really love to record a live album. If I had to choose that would be it.

What do you believe is the most essential function of art?

I believe art is the most subjective thing to ever exist, so I can’t think of “most essential function”. It can be the only place where you get to talk about something that is really important to you or something that ISN’T important, but you wanna talk about it anyway.

Something non-musical that you’re looking forward to?

Finally getting to see my friends after the pandemic.

Roadburn 2022 Makes Fourth Lineup Announcement

Posted in Whathaveyou on January 27th, 2022 by JJ Koczan

Slowly but surely, I have begun the process of reconciling myself to the consideration that there may be a Roadburn 2022 without me there to see it. This is emotional. I have been to Roadburn each April since 2009, and it has served as a centering force for me regardless of who’s playing at what time, how much I know about the acts, and so on. Even as the last several years have delved into experimentalist indie in a willful push against the boundaries of heavy as a concept, I’ve stayed aboard and had my mind accordingly expanded for that effort. To miss out on that, after two years of no festival, makes me feel as though I have a hole in my heart.

I have planned tickets booked to go on tour in Europe with some bands in March. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that happens, not the least because I want to write a book about it, but even with that as a potential thing to look forward to, I’m having trouble accepting no Roadburn for me in 2022. The future is garbage.

From the PR wire:

Roadburn 2022 redefining heaviness

Roadburn announces sixteen further performances for April 2022.

Roadburn Festival has today announced a further sixteen performances for the 2022 edition of the festival which will take place this April 21-24.

Artistic Director, Walter Hoejmakers comments:

“Given recent positive news about coronavirus numbers falling in Europe, we are continuing with confidence that Roadburn will be able to go ahead. Of course we will keep an eye on any relevant measures or necessary regulations that will impact on the festival, but we are optimistic that we’ll be able to welcome people to Tilburg in April. We’re thrilled to be able to add this new selection of bands to the already stellar lineup.”

Indonesia’s SENYAWA will be making the trip to Tilburg to share their experimental music with the Roadburn crowd. The highly regarded duo combine an electrifying extended vocal technique with a handcrafted, homemade instrument that can be utilised in a variety of ways to create their distinctive sound.

2022 curators, Milena Eva and Thomas Sciarone (of Dutch band GGGOLDDD) have confirmed the next selection of bands to join their curated event. AMNESIA SCANNER will deliver a dose of their audio-visual art to Roadburn and join us on our continuing quest to redefine heaviness in new ways. DUMA will travel from Kenya to bring their genre-crushing performances to the Roadburn audience. Dutch music will be represented throughout the curation with the addition of KAMIEL THOMAS, SØWT and a collaboration between ALICIA BRETON FERRER and EUROBOY.

Delayed by the pandemic, we’ll finally welcome THE DEVIL’S TRADE to Roadburn as Dávid Makó performs his doom-infused folk songs, as well as joining forces with JOHN CXNNOR (featuring members of LLNN) to perform a special collaborative set inspired by the Terminator franchise.

PLATON KARATAEV will bring some moments of thoughtful contemplation, and FORNDOM will offer up an opportunity to disconnect from modern life and reconnect to our roots.

Further proving that Dutch music is in rude health, Roadburn will host a special, extended performance of TERZIJ DE HORDE, GGU:LL and BROEDER DIELEMAN – featuring the premiere of Terzij de Horde’s new album, and taking some interesting twists and turns along the way as this collaboration reaches its crescendo.

Founding member of retired black metal band Nihill, VITRIOL, will revisit the sound design of the groundbreaking albums from Nihill by presenting a live audiovisual performance dedicated to the drone and black ambient side of the band.

Roadburn will host the debut performances from two black metal projects that already have connections to the festival; both FREJA and SILVER KNIFE will step out into the unknown at Roadburn 2022.

And for those who want to bring their dancing shoes to Roadburn, ALICE HUBBLE will be performing her album Hexentanzplatz in full, whilst DEATHSOMNIA will provide the soundtrack to a post-apocalyptic world.

These artists have been added to a line up that also features ULVER, LINGUA IGNOTA, LITURGY, EMMA RUTH RUNDLE, DIE WILDE JAGD, 40 WATT SUN, RUSSIAN CIRCLES and many more. To read about these newly added artists please click the links below.
