Look at the blue text below and you know what you’re gonna see? Yes, a whole lot of skull emojis. Like a lot. But it happens that each individual one corresponds to a demonstration of the labor of love and community that is the Maryland Doom Festival. From Abel Blood through Zekiah, Maryland Doom Fest 2024 celebrates its 10th anniversary edition with its standard sans-bullshit glut of heavy. Once more the Frederick-based event looks your square in the eye, drops for absolutely immersive days on you and asks if you’re up for it. Well, are ya?

I’m not sure what my summer travel plans are yet — this and Freak Valley have overlapped the last couple years for me — but it’s been since 2019 that I was last down there and oh I’d be so eager to show up and have the three or four people who recognize me (and thus make it feel like an absolute family experience; love love love everywhere you go down there) quietly think to themselves I’ve gotten older and fatter en route to obliterating myself with volume for about 96 hours straight. Fuck. King. A.

Oh, and I hear Thunderbird Divine have new stuff in the works and it’s amazing. So that’s a thing too.

Thunderbird Divine, “I’m Gonna Love You Just a Little More, Babe” (Barry White cover)

This Friday, Jan. 26, marks the debut from the new heavy psych jam outfit Minerall. Issued through Sulatron Records and titled Bügeln, which is German for ‘ironing’ (see cover), the collection features expansive improvisation-rooted breadth presented across two side-consuming pieces as the trio of guitarist Marcel Cultrera (also Speck), drummer Tommy Handschick (also Kombynat Robotron and the decidedly more crushing Earthbong) and the indispensable Dave “Sula Bassana” Schmidt (Zone Six, Sula Bassana, on and on) on bass and synth feel their way through a course of rousing cosmic rock and hypnotic dronescaping. Between the two-part “Bügeln/Unerforscht” (‘iron’/’unexplored’ in translation) at 22:07 and the subsequent “Sachebene” at 21:26, the live-recorded album sounds duly organic in its rollout and offers some of its most lush and engrossing moments in its most subdued stretches.

The story as I understand it is that Schmidt, Handschick and Cultrera came together with producer Yannick Aderb at Studio Buffbergen for a two-day session on Jan. 27 -28, 2023 (a year ago), that doubled as a birthday party. A celebration, in other words. It’s easy enough to read that mindset into the audio if one is so inclined, though the context here is open enough that if they said they recorded it at the top of a mountain in a thunderstorm, I’m not sure it wouldn’t also work for a narrative.

But “Bügeln/Unerforscht,” which was recorded on the 28th, makes a suitable opener as its more active first half draws the listener in with a lightly-insistent space rock push that would probably still be mellow in many other situations but here is complemented/contrasted by the textures that follow as the drums step back, Schmidt moves from bass to synth and the guitar likewise drones out. Krautrock, expanded-definition heavy, and through “Sachabene,” a molten, heroic-dose lysergic middle ground that finds balance between the two ends of “Bügeln/Unerforscht” — these things all come into play to crate a complete picture of scope and dynamic.

I don’t know if all this stuff was made up on the spot or if anybody came in with a part they’d dreamed about the night before, but even the stillest moments on Bügeln carry the vitality of their moment of creation — that spark of life, if you want — and though they’re presented in reverse order of how they happened, the fluidity Minerall capture in and between the two pieces shouldn’t be discounted and is nothing if not emblematic of the component players’ pedigrees.

Is all of this a long way of saying, “Hey, check out the jammers jamming?” Could be, and there’s definitely a they’ve-done-this-kind-of-thing-before sense to Minerall‘s dynamic. If you think of jazz players sitting in on open jams, different groups combining and players coming and going, Minerall‘s first and reportedly not last LP has some of that sensibility — just a thing that happened over a couple days and/or nights — but is all the more special for what came out of that fleeting time. Immediately it holds a character of its own in its widescreen vista, with sounds that can bristle with tension or dwell at rest as they will, and as Bügeln arrives, one can only wonder what’s in store for that birthday party this year.

Not just a studio project or the one-off they might’ve otherwise been, Minerall have a couple live shows booked for February in Germany. You’ll find those dates and more info below, courtesy of the PR wire.

In the spring of 2023, musicians from three of the most creative psych bands in the German-speaking world came together for a session at Buffbergen Studios in Hanover. Birthdays were celebrated and hours upon hours of music were recorded.

Through a broad spectrum of common ideas, the jams range from hard riffs to spherical ambient soundscapes and enchant not least through the interplay of synthesizer and space echo. “Bügeln” is now the first work of this creative process. An endless jam with hypnotic dynamics, carried by bass and drums, the three musicians lose themselves in the spheres of space echo only to land again after 45 minutes. Minimally edited at the beginning and end, this work is a non-reproducible snapshot that will be released on vinyl exactly one year after the recording session.

Behold Roadburn, Roadburning. Full-album performances, commissioned pieces, whatever the hell Xiu Xiu have going on I guess ever, and a glut of names you either know and are stoked on or don’t know and will likely see on festival bills throughout Europe for the next however many years.

Inter Arma have a new record called New Heaven that doesn’t have a release date yet that I’ve seen but that they’re slated to perform. They, like The Keening, come from the roster of Relapse Records, and The Keening will also have a full album performance for their debut, Little Bird (review here) (they’ll meet up on tour with Bell Witch shortly after; Bell Witch also play Roadburn, likely the first day given tour routing). Grails and Dool also feature, and there are special performances from Die Wilde Jagd, Couch Slut, Verwoed and Void ov Voices, and frankly the fact that White Ward can make it out of Ukraine to play at all should be considered one as well.

More than you could ever hope to fully experience in a span of four days and still just a fraction of what’s actually on offer. As I said in the first sentence: Roadburn, Roadburning. I was pretty stoked last week when word came through that Glasgow’s The Cosmic Dead had signed to Heavy Psych Sounds for their next record, and at that point I didn’t even know the album announcement would be here. Turns out the LP-to-come is called Infinite Peaks, and it’s got at least one entire-side-consuming jam, from which the video-premiering-below “Space Mountain Part I: Desert Djilo” has been carved out as an initial single.

A longer-form modus isn’t new for The Cosmic Dead, for whom Infinite Peaks serves as their ninth full-length as noted by the PR wire below. The band’s most recent outing, 2021’s split with Giöbia, The Intergalactic Connection – Exploring The Sideral Remote Hyperspace (review here), also came out on Heavy Psych Sounds, so it’s not the first time the band and label have worked together, and by adding the Scottish space racers to their roster, the Italian imprint only further cements its position at the forefront of heavy consciousness within and beyond Europe’s borders.

And if I told you “Space Mountain Part I: Desert Djilo” was a scorcher, would you believe it? How could you not? The Cosmic Dead‘s contribution to the Giöbia split was the 19-minute “Crater Creator,” and it doesn’t take them long to nestle into a groove on the new single, with threads of cosmic synth coursing along with the central outward nod; vibes and tones heavy, aimed at the sun, launch’d. There’s a lot of space rocking this and that out there right now. What distinguishes The Cosmic Dead from the glut of chic cosmic whatnot is the low end. It’s where heavy lives, and where bass is an afterthought in so much psych as there’s barely room on stage with guitar pedal boards the size of neighborhoods, The Cosmic Dead have always been able to hone a sound with float as well as heft. They’re heavier.

That’s what I’m hearing in “Space Mountain Part I: Desert Dijlo,” anyhow, and five years after 2019’s Scottish Space Race (review here), I’m glad for the reminder of what I thought was so badass about these guys to start with. The track is six minutes long, so more than a teaser, but you can still expect to be left hanging as the segment of the longer jam cuts out. I said when the Bell Witch European dates went up yesterday that I’d be posting about the tour again, and The Keening are why. The Portland-based dark atmospheric troupe led by Rebecca Vernon, formerly of SubRosa, will support the Seattle death-doom two-piece for three-plus weeks of road time, and as it’s their first trip overseas, it seemed prudent to mark the occasion.

The Keening‘s debut album, Little Bird (review here), came out last Fall through Relapse, and while it’s of course not Vernon‘s first time traveling internationally for shows, it is that for the group she’s assembled around her to bring this material to life on stage, and given the breadth and heart poured into that record, it’s a set I’d like to see. Having Bell Witch on after to turn your melancholy into an abyssal misery is just a bonus.

Oh, and The Keening were also confirmed for Roadburn today playing Little Bird in full. So there’s that, too.

Cheers to Cleveland, Ohio’s Frayle on getting picked up by Napalm Records for the release of their next album. It was kind of a matter of time for them to be signed by one or the other of the larger metal-world imprints. Kind of inevitable, huh? Frayle have been upward trajectory since the word go, a career-minded act with a defined aesthetic and a fresh-ish take on familiar ideas. They can appeal across subgenres in a way not a lot of doom-adjacent anything ever could.

Frayle‘s latest album, Skin & Sorrow came out in 2022 through Aqualamb and Lay Bare Recordings — both what I’d consider to be labels of marked taste — and while I don’t know if a reissue is in the works and the focus here seems to be on moving forward with new stuff, you wouldn’t blame them if one showed up.

FRAYLE Signs Worldwide Contract with Napalm Records

New Music Expected in 2024!

Fast-rising American doom outfit FRAYLE have officially joined forces with Napalm Records, signing a worldwide contract with the premier Austrian rock and metal empire.

Cleveland, Ohio’s FRAYLE crept onto the scene after forming in 2018, helmed by original members Sean Bilovecky (guitars) and Gwyn Strang (vocals). Since then, the band has been lauded by fans and media critics alike, merging the heaviness of occult-driven doom and blackgaze with Strang’s distinctively eerie vocal stylings. FRAYLE has since expanded into a four piece, welcoming drummer Jon Vinson and bassist Jason Knotek to the fold, allowing the band to fully realize their “lullabies over chaos” musical vision. Frayle, Skin & Sorrow (2022)

I like it when cool things happen to good bands generally, but specifically in this case I’m glad that Child‘s 2023 heavy-blues delve, Soul Murder (review here), is getting another look with the backing of Heavy Psych Sounds — from whom I’m almost an hour removed from discussing as one of the premier heavy labels in the world, so I must be due — since the Melbourne trio basically opened their veins and bled onto the tape, at least if the audio was anything to go by, and at least in the narrative I have of last year in my mind, the corresponding response was not what the record had earned. A Heavy Psych Sounds reissue, which is a first proper physical pressing, will fix that. The concept of one kind of already does.

That Soul Murder will feature alongside reissues for the band’s other releases — 2018’s I EP (review here), 2016’s Blueside (review here) and 2013’s self-titled debut (discussed here) — should hopefully bring more validation the band’s way for what they’ve done over the last decade-plus, and that’s super too, but getting the material out for international distribution is where it’s at here, and preorders for everything go up early next month. If you need more info than that, well, stick around because I’m sure it’s coming.

Child, Soul Murder (2023)

Pretty rad bill out of the gate for Rock Im Wald, which tops its thus-far bill with Danko Jones, who should be made an ambassador for Canada by now, as well as Sweden’s Graveyard, might-have-a-new-record-out-by-July UK stompers Orange Goblin, and the Brant Bjork Trio with its namesake on guitar and Mario Lalli on bass. Then you get into Planet of Zeus coming from Greece — maybe touring with Godsleep? — an appearance from The Devil and the Almighty Blues, which doesn’t happen all the time and you want to be there when it does, and the implied confirmation of summer European activity for High Desert Queen out of Texas, and it’s a win even before you get down to The Great Machine‘s madcap performance penchant, the upstarts Margarita Witch Cult, El Caco who released their first album in seven years in 2023, a partially-revamped Asomvel and Psychonaut‘s post-metallic texturing. It’s 13 bands. They’ve all got something going on.

The fest is set for July 25-27. Both SonicBlast and Hoflärm (in Portugal and Germany, respectively) are two weeks later, Aug. 8-10. Among the shared confirmations there are Brant Bjork Trio (who also announced a Spring run around the Desertfests and Sonic Whip) and Graveyard (for SonicBlast), so fair enough to expect tour announcements to come from them, and I’ll add Planet of Zeus and Margarita Witch Cult to that with an asterisk for ‘likely’ since of course I never actually know anything about anything.

There will be more to come, of course — it’s a three-dayer — and I’ll do my best to keep an eye out, but already there’s a lot to dig here. From socials:
