Fireball Ministry Sign to Ripple Music

Posted in Whathaveyou on November 10th, 2023 by JJ Koczan

Some new Fireball Ministry would be just fine, thank you very much. The long-running Cali heavy rockers join the roster of Ripple Music some six years after the release of their what’s still their latest LP, 2017’s Remember the Story (review here), which came out through Cleopatra Records, and just a day after the label announced the beginning of a new series called ‘Beneath the Desert Floor,’ focusing on reissues for albums from the pre-social media era of the late ’90s and aughts. So I guess some old Fireball Ministry would be just fine too, since that seems to be what’s up here.

Led by guitarist/vocalist Jim Rota, with Emily Burton on guitar, some dude named Scott Friggin’ Reeder That’s Who on bass and John Oreshnick on drums, the current incarnation of Fireball Ministry appeared at Psycho Las Vegas (review here) in 2018 to support the 2017 album, and though I was fresh off the plane as they were on stage, they still killed it. They’ve never been the highest profile unit, but they’ve likewise never been anything but solid in their delivery and songwriting, and if there is another studio record in the offing, Ripple will be a good home for introducing it to a listener base who might not have realized how much they were waiting to hear it.

Fingers crossed we get there. Ripple made it official in short-and-sweet style on the socials:

FIREBALL MINISTRY sign to Ripple Music for upcoming reissues

Los Angeles heavy rock heavyweights FIREBALL MINISTRY join the Ripple Music roster for the reissue of their most iconic albums as part of the label’s new “Beneath The Desert Floor” series.

Says the band: “Fireball Ministry is thrilled to join forces with Ripple Music to release some of our classic albums on vinyl, and share our music with new ears through the ‘Beneath The Desert Floor’ series.”

Founded by by James A. Rota II (The Company Band, Dream Widow), Emily J. Burton (Black Sabbitch), Scott Reeder (ex-Kyuss, The Obsessed) and John Oreshnick, Fireball Ministry has truth and rock n’ roll valor imprinted in their DNA, with a mixture of East Coast and Midwestern roots stirred into their California melting pot. From the outset, the band has aggressively steered clear of pretension. They move ever forward with a clear focus on bottom-heavy tunes, channeling timeless hard rock without falling into the traps of mere imitation or novelty. As such, they have earned the respect of many fellow artists, and a legion of dedicated fans has built in their wake.

Following on from the recent launch of its “Beneath The Desert Floor” series, Californian label Ripple Music is happy to welcome Fireball Ministry to its roster for the upcoming reissue of some of the band’s iconic records…

Fireball Ministry is:
James A. Rota II – Vocals/Guitar
Emily J. Burton – Guitar/Backing Vocals
Scott Reeder – Bass
John Oreshnick – Drums

The Awesome Machine to Reissue It’s Ugly or Nothing in January on Ripple Music

Posted in Whathaveyou on November 9th, 2023 by JJ Koczan

There are a ton of records like this. Issued in the aughts, or right around the turn of the century, largely forgotten as bands and/or labels have phased out, trends have shifted, and the infrastructure through which audience communication has shifted. But now as then, The Awesome Machine kick ass. The Swedish heavy rockers are a band who will make a few things clearer about what was happening in heavy rock around the country at that time, beyond the formative days of Witchcraft or the by-then-manifest charge of Dozer, and deeper into the underground.

Going deeper into the underground would seem to be Ripple Music‘s direct intention as it unveils It’s Ugly or Nothing as the first part of a series called ‘Beneath the Desert Floor’ that will reportedly hone in on albums like this that are at risk of being lost to time. So much the better with the catalogs of imprints like Nasoni, Elektrohasch, People Like You (which originally released this album), This Dark Reign, Molten Universe, or PsycheDOOMelic, among many others, so ripe for a new generation of listeners to explore. Then you get into reissuing comps and we could be here all day filling out installments of ‘Beneath the Desert Floor’ on behalf of Ripple, who it should be noted continue to plumb the modern underground as well with their ‘Turned to Stone’ split series and constant stream of ‘regular’ offerings.

And The Awesome Machine have had a couple rare-tracks collections turn up on vinyl through Ozium Records in the last couple years, so this isn’t completely out of the blue, though frankly even if it were it’d still be cool.

From the PR wire:

the awesome machine it's ugly or nothing

Ripple Music launch “Beneath The Desert Floor” series with special reissue of THE AWESOME MACHINE’s stoner rock classic “…It’s Ugly Or Nothing”.

Ripple Music is proud to launch the “Beneath The Desert Floor” series — unearthing long-lost treasures from the early days of stoner rock — and team up with Swedish scene veterans THE AWESOME MACHINE for the reissue of their cornerstone album “…It’s Ugly Or Nothing” this January 2024.

The legend says that the stoner rock genre was born under the baking sun of Southern California in the mid-80s, somewhere between Palm Desert and Orange County. A sun-baked, punk-infused and largely psychedelic-driven response to the Pacific NorthWest’s grunge movement, its most iconic torchbearers were named Kyuss, Fatso Jetson, Fu Manchu or Sleep. Way before social media existed, it didn’t take long for the first cassette tapes to cross the pond and spark an inextinguishable fire in what would become the cradle of European stoner rock: Sweden. Among the scene forefathers Dozer or Lowrider stood a myriad of hyperactive bands, among which THE AWESOME MACHINE.

An indestructible mass of fuzz-drenched heft, their 2000 cornerstone album “…It’s Ugly Or Nothing” is eleven tracks of uncompromising stoner rock goodness for the ages. An authentic classic of Swedish-brewed mastery that old and new fans of the genre will welcome with open arms and ears in their record collection!

About the “Beneath The Desert Floor” series, Ripple Music founder Todd Severin says: “There were so many amazing albums released in the underground heavy stoner/doom/desert/heavy psych during the late 90’s, early 2000’s that have gotten lost in the passage of time. These albums, from incredible bands, came out in a time before social media was fully formed to help push public awareness before the vinyl resurgence happened so they were never pressed to wax before digital channels existed to spread the music far and wide. My goal is to do our part to change that. To look beneath the desert floor and see what gems and treasures lay there. And spread them with the world.”

The Obelisk Questionnaire: Chris Read of La Chinga

Posted in Questionnaire on October 18th, 2023 by JJ Koczan

Chris Read of La Chinga (Photo by Sacha Mumosquish)

The Obelisk Questionnaire is a series of open questions intended to give the answerer an opportunity to explore these ideas and stories from their life as deeply as they choose. Answers can be short or long, and that reveals something in itself, but the most important factor is honesty.

Based on the Proust Questionnaire, the goal over time is to show a diverse range of perspectives as those who take part bring their own points of view to answering the same questions. To see all The Obelisk Questionnaire posts, click here.

Thank you for reading and thanks to all who participate.

The Obelisk Questionnaire: Chris Read of La Chinga

How do you define what you do and how did you come to do it?

Rocker… born this way.

Describe your first musical memory.

Hearing my parents records as a kid. Mostly folk records, Country but then they put on CCR Travelin Band and the excitement of that song really hit me. Soon after that I heard Zeppelin and it forever changed me, ,then Sabbath, AC/DC, Van Halen, Still is!

Describe your best musical memory to date.

Our last trip in Spain, playing on a Sunday night, thinking no one will come out, it’s gonna be dead… and then Boom! The bar is packed with loud raucous people screaming, dancing, sweating, partying to our music! Singing along with our songs! Getting crazy! No offence to North America but we don’t play gigs on Sundays here like that.. Spain! That country knows how to do it.

When was a time when a firmly held belief was tested?

They are all pretty solid…my faith in humanity is a bit shaky of late, but I hope for the best…

Where do you feel artistic progression leads?

I think it’s important to push yourself. I am always trying to write a better song. I consider that I have made progress, in that way. Doing something a lot, generally you improve. Being able to change, shift, but remembering your roots can keep the music fresh and exciting still.

How do you define success?

If you enjoy what you do, you are successful.

What is something you have seen that you wish you hadn’t?

Suffering, terror, death… it always is painful to see it, inevitable you encounter it in this world.

Sometimes seeing someone die can be a beautiful thing, if they are done and ready to go. Seeing a violent death is a haunting experience.

Describe something you haven’t created yet that you’d like to create.

I can hear songs just out of my reach just yet… they are fantastic and I need to keep working at my craft so they will come to me. They float in the ether and when they are ready or I am ready, they arrive… I do think it’s about being open to them and the possibility of the greatness.

What do you believe is the most essential function of art?

When it makes you feel something you can connect to the universal, something beyond your world and takes you there. When it hits you and changes your chemistry instantly. Right away it takes you to somewhere. Music is the best at that. The connection, the link throughout time. Being apart of that is always a thrill.

Something non-musical that you’re looking forward to?

My next surf trip!

Vitskär Süden Premiere “Thriller” Video

Posted in Bootleg Theater on October 17th, 2023 by JJ Koczan

VITSKÄR SÜDEN

Merry Christmas! Oh wait, no. The other one. Happy Halloween! You humans and your celebrations.

Indeed, if the trail of pine needles following me in the door, the crisp, clear, almost breathable cool morning air outside and the typhoons of candy at the grocery store are anything to go by, it’s autumn. And while the Xmas decorations are also out, Halloween still gets a nod, both because you buy stuff — candy, costumes, schlock — and because there do exist people on this earth who know how to have fun. They’re called children, mostly.

But cheers to Vitskär Süden as the Los Angeles atmospheric heavy rockers have shown themselves to have titanium organelles by taking on a tune no less iconic than Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” to get into the spirit of the season. It’s like trying to cover the bible.

I know you’re cool like that so that when I ask if you recall Vitskär Süden‘s 2022 sophomore LP and Ripple Music label-debut, The Faceless King (review here), the answer is a resounding “duh.” Fair enough. Their take on “Thriller” — a sort of goth-doom via earlier Nick Cave with electronic flair; they made it weird, it’s fun and takes off well near the end — was recorded at the same time as that album.

A bit of quick math tells you that the four-piece — bassist/vocalist Martin Garner, guitarist/synthesist Julian Goldberger, guitarist TJ Webber and drummer Christopher Martin — have thus been sitting on “Thriller” for two years, as The Faceless King was tracked in Spring 2021. One can only applaud their restraint not putting it out at some point between then and now and either undercutting their first record for a new label or wasting it somewhere else along the way. The time, in other words, is right now.

So here you go. New record from these guys next year, or so the PR wire tells me:

Vitskär Süden, “Thriller” video premiere

L.A. prog-doomers Vitskär Süden began experimenting with a cover version of Michael Jackson’s monumental “Thriller” a few years ago during the recording of their second album The Faceless King, although most of the band didn’t realize it. “I launched into my vocal/bass take on “Thriller” around Halloween during a jam session and the guys joined in but had absolutely no idea that’s what they were playing,” says Martin Garner. “They thought I was just improvising like I usually do when we’re writing.” Later, upon realizing what had emerged, the band decided to record the cover in proper Vitskär fashion as a Halloween treat for fans.

“We developed an approach to the track that was something along the lines of ‘a slo-mo trip to a seedy strip club with David Lynch,'” says Garner. “That told us everything we needed to know.”

Vitskär Süden’s third album, as yet unnamed, will be released in 2024 on Ripple Music.

Produced by Vitskär Süden and Don Cento
Mixed by Don Cento at CenTones, Austin, TX
Mastered by James Driscoll

Martin Garner – Bass/Vocals
Julian Goldberger – Guitar/Synths
Christopher Martin – Drums

The Obsessed Announce New Album Gilded Sorrow Due in Feb.; Euro Tour Starts Sept. 28

Posted in Whathaveyou on September 15th, 2023 by JJ Koczan

Doom legends The Obsessed are getting ready for a return to Europe at the end of this month, where they’ll play Up in Smoke, Demons Gate, Keep it Low, and, of course, Desertfest Belgium, which seems to be the epicenter of this Fall’s touring season on the continent. As they do, they’re also getting ready to start the release cycle for 2024’s Gilded Sorrow, which will be released next Feb. 16 through Ripple Music as the band’s first outing since 2017’s Sacred (review here). They’ve toured hard all the while — well, you know what I mean — and when I saw them this past June at Freak Valley, guitarist Scott “Wino” Weinrich qu0ted “It’s Not Okay” as the name of the album before playing a song of the same title. These things change sometimes. Gilded Sorrow is pretty doomed, so yeah, that’ll work nicely.

No music yet from the album — nor should there be, it’s five months away — but as noted, they’re already playing new material on the road, and hey, wouldn’t you know it, here’s a bunch of tour dates from the PR wire, previously announced but certainly relevant. Go figure:

the obsessed gilded sorrow

Doom metal godfathers THE OBSESSED to release fifth studio album “Gilded Sorrow” on Ripple Music this February; European tour starts soon!

Iconic US doom and heavy metal veterans THE OBSESSED announce a February 16th, 2024 date for the anticipated release of their fifth studio full-length “Gilded Sorrow” on Ripple Music. The band is ready to embark on a month-long European tour this month, including appearances at Desertfest, Keep It Low, Up In Smoke and Demons Gate festivals.

Scott “Wino” Weinrich is a living legend. In a way, he is the American version of Lemmy and shares many traits with the late, much-beloved metal icon. He’s always been a rebel, loner and an outsider in an outsider scene, pursuing his music without regard for popularity or acceptance. In the process, he came to be considered one of the early pioneers of American doom. All of this began when he founded THE OBSESSED back in the 70s, then pursued through his many other outfits such as Saint Vitus or Spirit Caravan. As a key part of the 80s Washington/Maryland music scene, his music earned the respect of metal, punk and crossover fans alike while often being dubbed doom metal. Looking back, it was just gritty, street-wise American metal with a cynical bent and psychedelic flair, and this is what made him the unique and timeless heavy music icon he is today.

Now THE OBSESSED comes roaring back with their most rocking album of all time “Gilded Sorrow”, to be released on February 16th, 2024 through independent Californian label Ripple Music. Expanded to a 4-piece with the addition of Jason Taylor on guitar, the music is more aggressive, straightforward and downright mean than ever before. Wino comments: “Adding Jason Taylor as second guitarist was one of the best decisions I’ve made because he’s a virtuoso guitar player and I must say he contributed quite a bit of good stuff to this record.” About the new album, he adds: “I think it’s the heaviest thing I’ve ever done. Heavy in a sense as not just sludge heavy, but well-rounded. And it sounds fantastic. Everything I do with Frank Marchand gets better and better. He knows what the fuck he’s doing.”

“Gilded Sorrow” will be available in various limited vinyl editions, classic vinyl, CD and digital, with US preorders already available at this location. Stay tuned as the first single will be revealed soon!

Kabbalah and Crystal Spiders Announce Co-Headlining European Tour

Posted in Whathaveyou on September 14th, 2023 by JJ Koczan

At the end of last month when the lineups were announced for Ripplefest Germany in Berlin and Köln, we found out that North Carolina’s Crystal Spiders would be making the trip abroad, and since they were going forth on their first performances in Europe, it didn’t seem unreasonable to think they’d at least make a short stint of it.

Indeed they’ll do precisely that, co-headlining on a run alongside Spanish heavy cult rockers Kabbalah, who’ll do 10 shows while Crystal Spiders accompany for seven of them, including the two nights at Ripplefest. Kabbalah reissued their 2017 debut, Spectral Ascent, through Ripple earlier this year, and in 2022 took part in Spinda Records‘ mega-compilation Grados. Minutos. Segundos. (review here), following on from their 2021 second album, The Omen (review here), which came out through Ripple imprint Rebel Waves.

As of last month, Crystal Spiders had six songs written for the follow-up to 2021’s Morieris (review here), and when that’s done, it will be their third record overall, and one assumes it’ll show up sometime in 2024. But new material on the road could certainly happen, and that’s always fun.

The PR wire sent the dates as part of an ongoing glut of Ripple-based news this week:

Occult doom rock trio KABBALAH announces co-headlining European tour with US heavy rockers CRYSTAL SPIDERS this fall!

On this special occasion, they will be joined by their Ripple Music labelmates and fast-rising heavy rockers Crystal Spiders and will both appear at Ripplefest in Berlin and Cologne.

Ritual King to Release The Infinite Mirror Nov. 17; New Single Streaming

Posted in Whathaveyou on September 13th, 2023 by JJ Koczan

ritual king

Having been fortunate enough earlier this summer to catch Ritual King playing at Freak Valley Festival (review here) amid the sun-baked German hillsides, I’ve been very much looking forward to learning how the Manchester, UK, three-piece might follow-up their 2020 self-titled debut (review here). And that fest is one of a multitude the trio have hit since the album dropped — RiffolutionCvltfestReturn of the RiffEsbjerg FuzztivalDesertfest London 2022 and I’m sure others as well have seen them feature, and no doubt that after The Infinite Mirror arrives on Nov. 17, that trend will continue. Spring run? More festivals? These things are very real possibilities.

As they did the first time around, Ripple Music will be handling Ritual King‘s sophomore full-length, and the band have put the seven-minute “Landmass” out as the first single. It’s seven minutes long, so not an insubstantial sampling of the five-songer, but what they do with that time is more important than the time itself, and “Landmass” takes shape patiently across a fluid early section and breaks into a shuffle riff not once, but twice before it’s done. Look out for the second time, they kind of sneak it in there, and to me, that represents them well. On the debut, they showed themselves to be clever songwriters, and the way “Landmass” picks up one more time just before it’s over feels like it’s assuring that the case hasn’t changed with The Infinite Mirror.

So, it’s a record I was looking forward to. Now it’s a record I’m looking forward to that has a release date and a lead single. Nice when these things evolve like that.

From the PR wire:

ritual king the infinite mirror

RITUAL KING shares debut single off upcoming new album “The Infinite Mirror”, out November 17th on Ripple Music.

Manchester stoner blues rockers RITUAL KING announce the release of their sophomore full-length “The Infinite Mirror” this November 13th on Ripple Music, and release its infectiously heavy first single “Landmass” on all streaming platforms today!

From the enigmatic corridors of Manchester’s underground stoner rock scene emerges RITUAL KING’s latest magnum opus, “The Infinite Mirror”. A journey that transcends the traditional boundaries of stoner psych rock, this album is a testament to the band’s continued evolution and their ability to tread new sonic territories. While their signature heavy riffs and intoxicating rhythms are very much present, they’re complemented by expansive, atmospheric passages that transport listeners to otherworldly realms. From the hypnotic realm of “Flow State” to the expansive soundscape of the title track “The Infinite Mirror” the album boasts a sonic palette that’s as diverse as it is mesmerizing.

“The Infinite Mirror” delves deep into the human psyche, exploring themes of introspection, duality, and the eternal search for meaning: it demands to be experienced in its entirety, with each track acting as a fragment of a larger, interconnected whole. Through a masterful balance of heaviness and harmony, it will plunge into darker realms, only to emerge into passages of serene elegance, reflecting the very duality it seeks to explore. With “The Infinite Mirror,” RITUAL KING has not just released an album, but a statement. It’s a declaration of their versatility and their ambition. Prepare to gaze deep within, and discover the endless possibilities that lie beyond the reflection.

It was produced, mixed and engineered by Luke Clarke and mastered by Jim Spenceat Eve Studios, Stockport, UK. The artwork was designed by Ryan T Hancock. It will be released in various vinyl editions, CD and digital on November 17th, with preorders available now from Ripple Music.

Morass of Molasses Announce UK Fall Tour Dates for 10th Anniversary

Posted in Whathaveyou on September 13th, 2023 by JJ Koczan

Reading, UK, heavy rockers Morass of Molasses released End All We Know (review here) earlier this year through Ripple Music and with it not only reaffirmed the trio as rock songwriters, but saw them expand their sound as well into psychedelic and progressive styles. Their third LP, the band — baritone guitarist/vocalist Bones Huse, bassist Phil Williams and drummer Raj Puni — took to the road for 11 dates in the UK this past Spring to support, and next month, they have three sets of weekender gigs booked to mark their 10th anniversary as a group.

Morass of Molasses signed to Ripple last year following the success of 2019’s The Ties That Bind (review here), and they returned to Desertfest London for the 2023 edition this past May, having played there previously in 2018. Their 2017 debut, These Paths We Tread, arrived after 2015’s So Flows Our Fate EP, and all the while — a couple years in there notwithstanding — they’ve kept a steady pace of live work, and they’re obviously set to keep that up. I don’t know what’s in the works for next year yet, but they’re a staple of the UK’s various heavyfests, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see them listed on a few more bills as we head toward the New Year. A band driven by passion keeps going. It’s like the fourth law of motion.

Congrats to Morass of Molasses on 10 years. Nothing to sneeze at, especially in an underground as crowded as England’s. The band posted the following on their socials:

morass of molasses anniversary tour

MORASS OF MOLASSES – **AUTUMN TOUR ANNOUNCEMENT**

A little over 10 years ago, three hairy blokes got together, and started making some pretty filthy riffs. One EP, and three albums later, we are still going strong, and continue to enjoy sharing our music with everyone. There have been ups and downs along the way, but ultimately we still love what we do, and want to keep pushing ourselves to create.

This short Autumn Tour honours that sentiment, and in a way is a commitment to keep on writing songs that both challenge us as musicians, and those who choose to come along for the ride.

Expect new material, but the same zest for Life we always have on stage. Come join us.
