Up in Smoke 2023 Makes First Lineup Announcement

Posted in Whathaveyou on March 31st, 2023 by JJ Koczan

Some pretty good inferences one might make looking at the first lineup announcement for Up in Smoke 2023, the annual Sound of Liberation festival held each year in Pratteln, Switzerland. It says The Obsessed will be on tour in Europe this Fall, which I’m pretty sure they’ve said anyway, but it might also be a clue as to the release of their next album. On the other hand, they might just be fucking touring because they’re The Obsessed and that’s what they do. Also it’s further expansion of Alabama Thunderpussy‘s reunion and since this festival is Sep. 29 to Oct. 1 and their prior confirmation was Keep it Low from Oct. 6 to 7, they’ll likely be on the road in Europe for the better part of at least two weeks. That’s not nothing.

Consider also Yawning Man heading abroad in Fall for their new album, announced yesterday. And did you hear that Dirty Sound Magnet record? I didn’t until now but it’s a ripper. New school oldschool blues heavy. Rad. And Eyehategod getting back at it too. It’s a cool bill, mix of newer acts and recognizable with Zeal & Ardor on top nothing to complain about.

Of course, there’s more to come here, but hell, I’d go to this. You? Festival in Switzerland in October? Why on earth would you say no to that?

Also note there’s a new Facebook page for the fest. From the PR wire:

Deville Announce First-Ever Australian Tour

Posted in Whathaveyou on March 31st, 2023 by JJ Koczan

As regards travel fantasies, Australia is the ultimate dream, as far as I’m concerned. I’d love to see China, Japan, Nepal, India, everywhere, Egypt, Argentina, Brazil, on and on, but Australia is about as far away from where I’m starting out as you can get and still be on the same globe. Swedish heavybringers Deville will head that way in June to catch slots at the Riff Mountain and Spliffs ‘n’ Riffs festivals with headlining dates besides. The increasingly forceful four-piece released their Heavy Lies the Crown (review here) album last Fall through Sixteentimes Music, stomping hard on the line between heavy rock and metal as has been their wont across their last several outings.

They go as veterans, and though the tour was originally slated for 2020, which would’ve seen them support 2018’s Pigs With Gods (review here), they’re that much firmer in their purposes for the time differential, and it’s easy to imagine their Scandinavian grooves will be well met by the Australian winter.

And since I mentioned it at the start, I did look up flights to Australia for these two weeks — not inviting myself or anything, just curious — and, well, if I ever happen into a spare two grand and three days of travel time, I’m sure I’ll keep you posted. Good for Deville making the (somewhat shorter but still significant) trip in the meantime.

Beats Cartel sent the following down the PR wire:

SWEDISH RIFF LORDS DEVILLE MAKE FIRST TRIP TO AUSTRALIA

Get tickets: https://www.beatscartel.com/showtickets

Swedish riff lords Deville make their first trip to Australia this June after Covid halted their plans in 2020, today having again announced plans for an extensive national tour on the back of multiple festival appearances and their latest album release “Heavy Lies the Crown”.

Born in 2004, Deville have developed through a haze of Rock, Stoner and Metal sounds, creating something unique which has seen them support the likes of Red Fang, Sepultura, Torche, Fu Manchu, Truckfighters and tour the US, UK and Europe many times over, playing the world’s best venues and festivals.

With albums signed to Heavy Psych Sounds, Buzzville Records, Small Stone Records and Sweden’s Fuzzorama Records, the band have given almost 20 years of service to Rock’n’Roll, a feat rarely realised in today’s music business. This tour will celebrate the upcoming milestone.

June 2023 sees the Swedes travel to Australia for their first ever tour of the country after Covid shut down their 2021 Australian tour post-announce. Presented by Beats Cartel, the tour racks up nine dates in six states/territories and will see the band appear alongside some of Australia’s best talent plus the new Riff Mountain Festival in Brisbane and a double header at WA’s Spliffs’n’Riffs.

Lead singer Andreas Bengtsson says of the upcoming tour “Touring Australia for the first time is of course a huge thing for us and doing it when the band is turning 20 years old makes it even better. We’re thrilled to share the stage during this run with some of our favourite Australian bands. This will be a good one, hope to see you all at a show.”

Catch Deville this Winter, making their way across the country coast to coast for what will be a fun and energetic display of European hard Rock. Tickets are onsale now through www.beatscartel.com/showtickets.

The Device Release EAST on Limited Tape; “Front” Video Posted

Posted in Whathaveyou on March 31st, 2023 by JJ Koczan

As to why only 42 tapes? Well aside from the fact that it’s the answer to life, the universe, and everything, I don’t really know. But at least it’s that.

Today, Ukrainian sludgethrowers The Device release their new three-songer, titled EAST in all-caps as though to emphasize the other-ness of Eastern Europe from the perspective of the western portion of the continent, on limited cassette through Galactic SmokeHouse, which honors the outing’s live recorded, harsh, dense-toned chaos with handmade art, poems, and exclusive tracks on the B-side that aren’t available in the DL version.

Proceedings from the release — also streaming in full as of today — go to benefit the war effort in Ukraine, which now has the rest of Europe and beyond fortifying itself for who the hell knows what will happen in the next couple years as it drags on, the Ukrainian people running point in a proxy war between my home country of the US and Russia which reaffirms that America learned nothing from wasting 20 years and I don’t even know how many lives in Afghanistan and Iraq — that’s before you get to the money — and reminds once again that humans, primarily, don’t deserve a planet this beautiful. Nonetheless, we’re here and we’re wrecking up the place.

How does this war end? And when? I don’t know. Think Russia won’t just throw hundreds of thousands of its ‘soldiers’ under the treads of US and European tanks? Think America is going to bankrupt itself again without sending ground troops in? And when NATO goes to war with Russia, and that’s basically WWIII, what does China have to say about it? I think about these things, and then my head starts to hurt when I think it could be my kid’s generation fighting this war in another 10-plus years, and having seen my own generation pulled apart by needless conflict in a war of aggression — that the US started, I’ll note — to watch the cycle start up all over, with nuclear threat looming, is all the more disheartening. So yeah.

I’m not saying it’s not worth supporting Ukraine. I’m saying it’s not worth betting on humanity.

And on that happy note, I’ll turn you over to the PR wire info for The Device‘s EAST — which was recorded in 2021 when all Eastern Europe had to worry about was a fucking plague like everyone else at the time — and the war-themed video that accompanies the 13-minute “Front” from it. Alongside “Work” (10:24) and the interlude “Crawl” (2:44), “Front” is duly raw and biting, and if you actually make it through watching the clip and feel nothing, just a heads up, you might be a sociopath.

Here you go:

The Device rises again. From the ashes of the ruined buildings. From the tears of the forsaken ones. From the blood of the dead.

‘Front’ is a single promoting the new album of the ancient brotherhood. ‘EAST’ is to be released on a DIY TAPE the 31st of March, 2023. By buying this album, you are helping in the fight for freedom of Ukraine and its people. Money from this tape is being sent to those who need it in the UA. Right now we are raising money for a thermal viewfinder for our friend Ivan, fighting in Donbas.

This album is dedicated to all Easterners in Europe.

Stay strong, brothers and sister. We will see better times. The power of change is within us.

Eastern Europe. War. Regime. Propaganda. Gov-Party police. Inhumane working conditions in modern day slavery – minimum wage jobs. This is an album touching on all of those topics so vivid in everyday life of the Easterners today. With this music, we are fighting against all of those as much as we can. To help our Ukrainian brothers and sisters win the most important of all fights, the fight for freedom of the whole East against the muscovite invasion, we are sending all the profits from this record to the Ukrainian army.

East is an album that is a pure expression of anger, anguish and grief of living in Eastern Europe. Raw, disgusting sounds full of saturation and distortion. Sludge in the most real form. DIY live recorded on one day in a basement in Poland during summer 2021.

Ruff Majik Post “Queen of the Gorgons”; Elektrik Ram LP Preorder Available

Posted in Whathaveyou on March 31st, 2023 by JJ Koczan

ruff majik (photo by Christelle Duvenage Photography)

Last time I posted about the upcoming Ruff Majik LP, Elektrik Ram, I said I needed to dig into it more. Well, I’ve done that and it’s stellar. A can’t-put-it-down album, and even when I do manage to stop listening, I still hear the songs playing in my head because they’re that infectious. And it’s different songs on different days, because they’re all up to the standard. In the boldness of their arrangements, the no-holds-barred lyrics and the way they break out of heavy rock genre limitations, it’s a triumph of a record. Earlier this week I did a video interview with vocalist/guitarist Johni Holiday, and we went pretty deep into what was going on with him as it was coming together — spoiler: a lot — as well as the love songs that appear throughout, one of which is the latest single, “Queen of the Gorgons.”

There are 11 cuts on the album and “Queen of the Gorgons” is the fourth to stream. They’ve gamified it accordingly with all sorts of shenanigans in the lyric video. You might find the song a fitting complement to “She’s Still a Goth” on side A, and while I’d love to go on a long, long rant about the work outdoing themselves with this record, I’m slated to stream Elektrik Ram in full on April 27, and I honestly don’t care if they release every song from it beforehand, I’m fucking honored to have it on the schedule. It’s an adventure. Don’t skip.

Preorders are up, so have at that if you will, and you can see the rules of the game below along with everything they’ve put out from the record this far. If there’s more I’ll post more because it’s that kind of thing. From the PR wire:

With iconic music press buzzing over Ruff Majik’s new album Elektrik Ram, set for release on the 28th April 2023 via Mongrel Records the band release fiery new single Queen of The Gorgons.

A rewatching of the classic 1981 ‘Clash Of The Titans’ set Johni Holiday’s brain gears into motion, somewhere during a delirious recovery state. Basically, we all know the story of the gorgon Medusa, and how she was slain at the hands of Perseus. In this version of the story, the tables have turned, and Perseus (the speaker) finds himself head over heels in-love with Medusa, and fairly close to worshipping her, singing about admiring her ‘serpentine locks of hair’ and ’emerald eyes set to stun’. Of course, Johni also delves into biblical references when he asks the serpentine woman to build him ‘a church from my ribs’ so he can sing her hymns every day.

“It’s about admiring a woman for her fierce attitude and way of life. She has no care about the speaker and has no need to care about him. The story revolves around his maniacal worship of her, and her indifference to his existence.” – comments Johni

If you’ve been wanting to get your hands on an Elektrik Ram vinyl – here’s your chance. Watch the lyric video for Queen Of The Gorgons and as you will notice it’s full of Easter eggs. Whoever finds all the Easter eggs first wins a copy of Elektrik Ram and a one of a kind, never to be printed again t-shirt.

Rules:
1. Take screenshots of all the Easter eggs you find.
2. Post them as a story, reel or a regular post in order, and remember to tag the band.

The horned infant known as Ruff Majik emerged from the primordial ooze when the band moved from the historical town of Lydenburg in 2012 to the capital city of Pretoria, where they honed their craft for a few years before finally entering the studio to record for the first time. Now, with a number of EP’s and two lauded albums under their belt, not to mention a megaton of local and international touring, they return with what might be their defining work in the shape of ‘Elektrik Ram’.

Child Announce Australian Tour Dates Supporting Soul Murder

Posted in Whathaveyou on March 30th, 2023 by JJ Koczan

Heavy blues rockers Child have booked a run of mostly-east-coast tour dates in their home country of Australia to support the recent release of their third album, Soul Murder (review here). That record has a bit of a temporal slip going on, since it was recorded at least largely in 2018 and only greets public ears now, but that’s still long enough for it to show progression from 2016’s Blueside (review here) — 2018’s I EP (review here) makes that seven-year stretch between LPs somewhat less mammoth — and if you haven’t heard it, god damn, the songs.

Headlined by a virtuoso performance from guitarist/vocalist Mathias Northway, and with the classic heavy rock rhythm section of bassist Danny Smith (since replaced by Rhys Kelly) and drummer Michael Lowe at its foundation, Soul Murder collects seven individual pieces with an unmitigated flow between them and while coming across as oh-you-know-nothin’-too-fancy casual on its face — not literally, the Nick Keller cover art is likewise gorgeous and epic — it harnesses a ’70s spirit through a presentation all its own.

It is quite an album, in other words, and if you didn’t hear it, I’d advise you hit play on the Bandcamp embed below and kiss a decent portion of your afternoon goodbye as you lose yourself in its dynamic sprawl. The tour dates, which are set for April and May, follow here, as posted on social media with some additional comment from Northway. And by the way, if you’re not from Oz or have never seen Bluey, a dunny is a toilet.

Here you go:

The Obelisk Questionnaire: Adam Luca from Mother Iron Horse

Posted in Questionnaire on March 30th, 2023 by JJ Koczan

Adam Luca from Mother Iron Horse

The Obelisk Questionnaire is a series of open questions intended to give the answerer an opportunity to explore these ideas and stories from their life as deeply as they choose. Answers can be short or long, and that reveals something in itself, but the most important factor is honesty.

Based on the Proust Questionnaire, the goal over time is to show a diverse range of perspectives as those who take part bring their own points of view to answering the same questions. To see all The Obelisk Questionnaire posts, click here.

Thank you for reading and thanks to all who participate.

The Obelisk Questionnaire: Adam Luca from Mother Iron Horse

How do you define what you do and how did you come to do it?

I guess, in a general sense, I create. Whether it be music, video or just art in any form. Some of my earliest memories are scrawling on paper with crayons. It’s always been a part of me. Now as an adult, I’m fortunate enough to make art with my best friends. That art has taken us all over the country and will take us all over the world before we’re done. Even in the darkest moments of life, art seems to flourish. As a child it started as a coping mechanism and has since blossomed into a compulsion.

Describe your first musical memory.

My first musical memory is watching my sister dance around to “Little Lies” by Fleetwood Mac when we were very young. I was maybe three or four years old and that song still holds a special place in my heart.

Describe your best musical memory to date.

My best musical memory would probably be my first hardcore show. I was around 12 years old and had grown up listening to those generic rock radio stations. A friend of mine had his older sister bring us to a show at The New World, which was a hardcore punk club in my hometown of Lynn, Ma. It was a true awakening for me. Whatever idea I had about rock music at the time was quickly smashed to pieces. I was at such a young impress age and these cats were going insane both on the stage and in the crowd. It was the coolest thing I had ever seen. I was hooked. The aggression, the do it yourself mantra, the brutal honesty and the unwritten rules that were learned the hard way. I was obsessed with it and still am today.

When was a time when a firmly held belief was tested?

Oh this happens constantly. We are approached with opportunities to play with these bigger bands and we’re honored by that. However, I will never share the stage with any band whose members have a history or domestic violence, sexual assault, bigotry or racism. I just flat out won’t do it. This has happened many times with bands who are considered to be massive. We’ve missed out on opportunities to grow quickly because of these beliefs and that’s totally fine with me. I’d rather grow at a slower pace than have a brand that I created be associated with anyone like that. I have and will always be outspoken about that. I believe in rehabilitation and people ability to change, of course. However, that doesn’t mean I’ll share the stage with that person or band.

Where do you feel artistic progression leads?

Artistic progression often leads to a very different outcome than what was initiated. It’s always evolving. Always changing. I see a lot of people get upset when bands change their style of music, which I can somewhat understand. However, the art SHOULD progress. I never want to make the same record twice and I don’t think I’m alone in that mindset. It’s natural to evolve and art is not exempt from that.

How do you define success?

I don’t define success in a monetary sense, especially in music. We exist in a world where the musician is paid last and more often than not we’re paid by pennies on the dollar. So I like to measure success by how many lives we are able to touch. Whether it be through the music itself, the lyrical content, the live show or just meeting people on the road. We’ve been fortunate to make so many amazing friends all over the world through our music and I’m beyond blessed by that. People we’ve never met, in countries we’ve never been to are getting MIH tattoos, or putting out zines that spread the word about us, or play us on their radio shows. To me, that’s success. Money is great to keep things sustainable, but I’m always floored by the stories we hear about how our music has helped someone through a tough time. I’m honored to have helped someone through something.

What is something you have seen that you wish you hadn’t?

The way some people get a pass for their abhorrent behavior in the music industry. I’ve seen bands refuse to speak out about issues because it might hurt their fanbase or ability to play certain venues. I’ve seen members of massive bands prey on underage girls. They say that you should never meet your heroes and I firmly believe that’s true.

Describe something you haven’t created yet that you’d like to create.

I’d love to get more into film making. The music video for Old Man Satan was the first time I had ever directed anything. It was so much fun and was amazing to have my hands in every aspect of it from start to finish. I really hope we get to expand on this soon.

What do you believe is the most essential function of art?

To inspire thought. I believe that good art should make a person think. Regardless of what that thought may be. As long as it provokes something in the target then it’s doing it’s job.

Something non-musical that you’re looking forward to?

The sunrise (it’s 4am here). People being held accountable for their actions. A day where women have full body autonomy. A world wear skin color or sexual orientation doesn’t dictate a persons social status. I look forward to seeing my daughter grow up in a better world than the one I grew up in.

High Priest to Release Invocation June 23; “Divinity” Video Posted

Posted in Whathaveyou on March 30th, 2023 by JJ Koczan

High Priest

Having been lucky enough to see these cats play in 2019 (review here) and to dig into their till-now latest offering, that same year’s Sanctum EP (review here), I’m ready to stand on the precipice of their next record and declare them underrated. The melody and tonal depth of the new track “Divinity” bodes well for what’s to come when the Chicago four-piece issue their Invocation full-length, their approach solidified in terms of craft with a hefty push behind it while hitting harder here as well.

As to the reasons they might be underrated, well, history shows EPs consistently get less attention, and their moniker is generic to a point of being almost too easy to pass by — I would like to see them tour with L.A.’s High Priestess on some kind of non-lucid-clergy-themed excursion — and given the glut of heavy everything out right now, that’s probably enough. Market saturation and all that.

But if there’s one takeaway you get from this post, let it be not to sleep on them either because of your own burnout with all that is vaguely stoner, or at very least to check out the “Divinity” video below, which will neither take much of your busy day nor likely be a thing you’ll regret later. Info came from the PR wire:

High Priest Invocation

HIGH PRIEST unleash video single ‘Divinity’ taken from the forthcoming new album “Invocation”

Preorder link:
http://lnk.spkr.media/highpriest-invocation

Chicago stoner doom aficionados HIGH PRIEST have released the psychedelic video ‘Divinity’ as the first single taken from their forthcoming debut album “Invocation”. The full-length is scheduled for release on June 23, 2023. Please find all album details below.

High Priest comment on the album: “This record was a long long time coming”, guitarist John Regan writes about “Invocation”. “On top of the craziness in the world the last two years, we experienced a lot of changes as a band: PHDs, new businesses, new homes, new cities. Despite all that, we brought all our energy into an album that feels like the best and most complete work we’ve ever done. ‘Invocation’ feels like catharsis inside chaos.”

John Regan discusses the lead single ‘Divinity’: “We had eight songs written and decided to do one more push to see what we could come up with”, the guitarist states. “I started playing some iPhone riff demos and when Dan heard ‘Divinity’, he said, ‘that one is a banger’. We started working with it and the full song pretty much came together in one day. It’s probably the most energetic song on the record, and we feel like it gives every piece a moment in the sun: huge drum fills, harmonized guitar solos, and a vocal hook. It’s the kind of song that makes you want to get in your car and drive down an open road, only your car is a spaceship and the road is the galaxy.”

Yawning Man Announce New Album Long Walk of the Navajo Due June 16

Posted in Whathaveyou on March 30th, 2023 by JJ Koczan

I was actually pretty glad to see the announcement of this announcement last week, because while I didn’t get that posted — they were confirmed for Høstsabbat on Friday so that let me post about it; there’s another confirmation coming tomorrow — and those put together mean Yawning Man will be touring Europe for about a full month in support of this new record. That’s not out of character, necessarily, but neither something that happens every year.

Pushing into the band’s improv roots, the new album, Long Walk of the Navajo is comprised of three songs, the last and shortest of which, “Blood Sand” (8:58) is streaming now in all its lush, ambient gorgeousness. You’ll note Billy Cordell back on bass in place of Mario Lalli, who’s been going hard between Fatso Jetson and his Rubber Snake Charmers project, and that the recording was helmed by Steve Kille of Dead Meadow. And as ever, you’ll also note the tone of founding guitarist Gary Arce, because golly that’s lovely.

The album takes its title from the 1864 forced relocation of the Navajo tribe by the US government from Arizona to the east of New Mexico, during which a minimum of 200 people died. That’s after the Trail of Tears, which was between 1830-1850, but of course all part of the same (ongoing) genocide of Native American peoples.

ALBUM DESCRIPTION

Long walk of the Navajo features Gary Arce (Guitar), Bill Stinson (Drums), and the return of Billy Cordell (Bass). The Long Walk Sessions were inspired by a desert storm that hit the Joshua tree landscape that created a dark and gloomy backdrop for the bands creativity and improvisations. Blood Sand was recorded at Gary’s house by Steve Kille of Dead Meadow in Oct of 2022. It was a complete improvisation. Long Walk of the Navajo and Respiratory Pause were recorded at Gatos Trail Recording Studio by Dan Joeright in January of 2023. All songs mixed and mastered by Steve Kille.

YAWNING MAN is:
