Ripple Music to Release Dominance and Submission: A Tribute to Blue Öyster Cult

Posted in Whathaveyou on August 24th, 2020 by JJ Koczan

Initially a project of Steve Hanford — known for his work in Poison Idea and a slew of others, including most recently Portland, Oregon’s Ape Machine — the various artists project Dominance and Submission: A Tribute to Blue Öyster Cult will see release in the coming months via Ripple Music. What began as a loving homage from Hanford to his favorite band has become a meta-tribute, as it fell to others to complete the project following Hanford‘s death earlier this year. It is, then, honoring as much to him and his work as much as Blue Öyster Cult, since Hanford sits in on many the tracks, including those featuring the likes of Billy Anderson, Rob Wrong (Witch Mountain) and Andrea Vidal (Holy Grove), Jeff Matz of Zeke and High on Fire, Year of the Cobra, Mos Generator and others.

No audio yet, and I expect a solid release date is forthcoming, but the heart with which this has been put together, on both ends, comes through clearly in the announcement below — also the cover art rules — so dig into that in the meantime and when I hear about the rest, I’ll let you know.

Here goes:

Dominance and Submission: A Tribute To Blue Öyster Cult

Californian powerhouse RIPPLE MUSIC is proud to announce the upcoming release of their all-star tribute album to Blue Öyster Cult: ‘Dominance and Submission: A Tribute to Blue Öyster Cult’. The album will feature covers by Steve Hanford, Mark Lanegan, Billy Anderson, Jeff Matz, Zeke, Mondo Generator and other major names of the heavy rock world.

This special tribute album was initiated by Poison Idea’s departed drummer Steve Hanford, in conjunction with Ian Watts of Ape Machine. Founded in 1967, Blue Öyster Cult are considered pioneers of occult rock’n’roll, marking generations with timeless anthems such as “(Don’t Fear) The Reaper”, “Burnin’ for You”, “Cities on Flame with Rock and Roll” or “Godzilla”. The New-York outfit has since then remained a reference act of the 70s rock scene alongside Black Sabbath, MC5, The Stooges or Steppenwolf.

The “Dominance and Submission: A Tribute To Blue Öyster Cult” record will highlight some of the finest work from the legendary American band, with unique contributions from JEFF MATZ of ZEKE and HIGH ON FIRE, MONDO GENERATOR, MOS GENERATOR, GREAT ELECTRIC QUEST, QUASI, HOLY GROVE, WAR CLOUD, APE MACHINE, ZEKE, YEAR OF THE COBRA, FETISH, SPINDRIFT as well as MARK LANEGAN and BILLY ANDERSON. The artwork was designed by Dave Snider.

The concept:

Steven Hanford AKA Thee Slayer Hippy lived the rocky road of the rock and roll veteran. As drummer and producer in Poison Idea he played on two of the most influential records of hardcore – War All The Time and Feel The Darkness. As producer he worked on indie rock projects such as Heatmiser (with frontman Elliot Smith) and punk albums for notable names like The Hard Ons. Due to some struggles with addiction which he later attributed to repressed sexual abuse as a child, Steve found himself in prison on multiple occasions, most recently in 2008 for a seven-year sentence after robbing a Walgreens. While in prison, Steve turned his life around and started recording albums for prisoners with a fellow inmate named Sam Redding (Sam appears on this record). After being released in 2015, Steve jumped on a tour playing drums in The Skull and was soon after introduced to Ape Machine by mutual friend Tony Lash (Heatmiser). Steve quickly joined Ape Machine on drums and also as producer for Darker Seas. While on the road with Ape Machine, Steve decided he wanted to produce a tribute record to one of his favorite bands, Blue Öyster Cult.

Steve had a vision of building a studio and originally wanted to use funds from the sale of the tribute record to get some gear. The goal was to be able to work in his own studio, producing records for other bands. The idea was to have bands come and record BÖC tribute songs in his fledgling studio (temporarily using borrowed gear from Ian Watts) which he would produce, simultaneously making a name for the studio, his production techniques, and his drumming skills. Much of the gear and engineering would be provided by Ian Watts.

Unfortunately, Steve didn’t make it to see the project through to release due to his suffering a heart attack on May 21st 2020. Fortunately for music fans though, he had completed most of the recording for the project, leaving Ian Watts to gather the final pieces and mix the record.

Steve was an accomplished and respected musician and was able to round up a star studded cast of bands for the tribute, including members of Mondo Generator, Quasi, Holy Grove, War Cloud, Mos Generator, Great Electric Quest, Ape Machine, Zeke, Year of the Cobra, High on Fire, Fetish, Spindrift as well as notable names such as Mark Lanegan and Billy Anderson.

With Steve no longer being with us, the proceeds of the record will go to benefit his widowed partner, Kitty Diggins who was left with some financial hardships, including much needed house repairs.

Monolith on the Mesa 2020 Lineup Update: Khemmis, Mondo Drag, Heavy Temple & More Added

Posted in Whathaveyou on January 2nd, 2020 by JJ Koczan

I’ll be 100 percent honest with you and say I don’t know how recent the lineup additions are here, but I’m trying basically to keep up with Monolith on the Mesa 2020 and there are names listed below that weren’t included in the last lineup update I got from the PR wire, so if I’m a month behind, I’m sorry. It’s been a busy month. Some of those additions are significant as well, from Warhorse, Heavy Temple and Yatra making the trek from the East Coast to Mondo Drag coming from San Diego, Khemmis from Denver and Distances from the relatively nearby Albuquerque. All these and the others listed below will convene at the Taos Mesa Brewing Mothership for what’s the second Monolith on the Mesa Festival, which I have very little doubt is precisely the kind of party it looks like on paper. To wit, it looks like quite a party.

I went to the fest’s website and cut and pasted the lineup. That’s what I did. Swiped the logo while I was there too. Full confession.

With dreams of the desert in Springtime:

Mondo Generator Premiere “Dead Silence” from Lost 2010 Album Shooters Bible

Posted in audiObelisk on December 18th, 2019 by JJ Koczan

Even in its earlier catchiest moments like the flirting with melody that happens in “Invisible Like the Sky” or the end of “Burn a Bridge,” or in the later “Smashed Apart” and careening “Hang Me High,” Mondo Generator‘s threat of violence feels ever-present. That is, you never really know when Nick Oliveri is going to completely fly off the handle and start tearing his own throat out with vicious screams and willfully caustic punk rock. I don’t know how one goes about “losing” an album, but I’ve got two theories. Ready? Theory one: Drugs. Hey, dude’s got a reputation. Theory two: Timing.

Ever volatile, ever tempestuous, ever assaulting, Oliveri oversaw the recording of Mondo Generator‘s Shooters Bible — 13 tracks/39 minutes of pure fuckyou — in 2010, singing and playing bass and guitar on all the tracks including the Iggy Pop cover “Dog Food,” on which Happy Tom handles bass and Dave Grohl drums in place of Hoss. Consider though that as he might’ve been getting ready to release Shooters Bible, the semi-reunion Kyuss Lives! was beginning to take shape and began to tour after former Kyuss frontman John Garcia did his own run playing songs from the classic desert rockers and hooked up with drummer Brant Bjork. Garcia and Bjork also put their solo stuff on hold to invest in doing Kyuss Lives!, which should’ve been called Kyuss on all grounds except apparently legal ones and wound up being called Vista Chino as Oliveri departed the bassist role, going back to his various other pursuits: playing and touring acoustic, destroying all in his path with The Dwarves, the infamous SWAT team standoff, etc. I guess by the time it would’ve come around for release in, say, 2012 or 2013, Oliveri had already moved on.

mondo generator shooters bibleIndeed, Mondo Generator‘s Hell Comes to Your Heart came out in 2011 with much of the same material as Shooters Bible recorded or at least mixed to sound cleaner and more accessible and “Dog Food” and “Smashed Apart” were issued as a single, so maybe it was just a case of being dissatisfied at the time with how it all came out. How the hell should I know? One way or the other, Oliveri has been plunging into his clearly vast catalog of contributions, one-offs, demos and unreleased whatnots for Heavy Psych Sounds over the last few years, resulting on the N.O. Hits at All series, which is up to its fifth installment. Only fitting that the same imprint should unearth Shooters Bible, which brings the rawness of Oliveri‘s particular punk-metal ethic to the forefront and, in its centerpiece, “We are Mondo Generator,” lives up to that declaration — and no, the Motörhead reference isn’t lost — even as it’s essentially a solo work with just Oliveri and Hoss playing on it.

The miracle of Mondo Generator has always been the outfit’s willingness to push right up against the line of madness, and as much as Oliveri‘s legacy is inherently tied to the formative movement of Californian desert rock owing to his time in Kyuss and subsequently peak-era Queens of the Stone Age, and his influence has been considerable as a part of that, he’s always been the knife’s edge rather than the handle, and for all the laid back vibes that those around him had elicited, his trip is ever more aggressive and even in its moments of clarity retains the threat of immediate switch-flip violence. Shooters Bible is outlaw punk rock. However it was lost in the first place, in finding it, Mondo Generator give a showing of the maniac’s blood pumping at their heart.

Recently, the band — now the trio of Oliveri, guitarist Mike Pygmie and drummer Mike Amster — also unveiled a track from their upcoming LP, Fuck It (posted here). That album is out Feb. 21. Shooters Bible will follow on Feb. 28, and Mondo Generator will embark on an extensive European tour on Feb. 5, the dates for which you can find under the player below, on which you can hear the premiere of Shooters Bible opener “Dead Silence.”

As always, I hope you enjoy:

This is a gem! A rare pearl found in the deep sea, a MONDO GENERATOR 2010 lost album!!

Preorders: https://heavypsychsoundsrecords.bandcamp.com/album/mondo-generator-shooters-bible

The vocals are ripped as usual, some songs are screamed but yet others feature melodic lines. The album has a punk-stoner sound with a desert rock attitude. All the songs are written by Nick Oliveri “ Rex Everything”.

The album features the cover of “Dog Food” by Iggy Pop with Dave Grohl on drums. Nick knows how to surprise us all the time! He picked this lost gem from his secret stash!

The artwork is by Bangalore.

Maryland Doom Fest 2020 Announces Full Lineup

Posted in Whathaveyou on October 31st, 2019 by JJ Koczan

maryland doom fest 2020 banner

In the immortal words of one Peter Steele: Happy Halloween, baby. Those playing along at home know that today means one thing to the realms of doom, and it’s that it’s time for Maryland Doom Fest to unveil next year’s lineup. Maryland Doom Fest 2020 has some significant shoes to fill in following up this year’s, which of course was held in June in Frederick, Maryland, and they’ve lined up a full four-dayer onslaught to make a go of it.

Headlining sets from Cirith UngolBlood CeremonySpeedealer and Mondo Generator, with direct killage from The SkullVictor Griffin‘s Death Row Assembly (this will be incredible, especially there), Witch Mountain and Sorcerer, the fest is pretty much blowing its own prior reach out of the water. I’ll especially look forward to Arduini/Balich and hope that this performance accompanies a new album, but return appearances from The Age of TruthBailjackEarthride (yes!), Shadow WitchSpiral GraveKnoxxville and Helgamite will be awesome as well, and I’ve no doubt the likes of Vessel of Light, Galactic Cross (with Dave Sherman of Earthride), YatraBlack LungPlainrideCavernMolasses BargeAdmiral BrowningBlack RoadPoobahOmen Stones and Crystal Spiders will be made to feel welcome into the MDDF family vibe, at least those who aren’t already a part of it. I guess particularly in the case of Admiral Browning, it’s more like family reunion.

Keeping with the festival’s no-dragged-out-staggered-announcements spirit, I’ll be up front about this: it’s gonna be a good ‘un. You should do whatever you need to do to make it happen.

Monolith on the Mesa: Yawning Man, Fatso Jetson, Wo Fat, Earthride, Magic Castles & Great Electric Quest Added

Posted in Whathaveyou on October 30th, 2019 by JJ Koczan

Monolith on the Mesa, which kind of came out of the gate in full-fledged upstart fashion this year and put Taos, New Mexico, on the map as a destination for heavyheads from all over, continues to announce acts for its follow-up edition in 2020. The fest is set for May 28-30 at Taos Mesa Brewing, same spot it was held this Spring, and is $99 for the weekend, which doesn’t sound cheap, but uh, is, considering what you get. Not exactly slumming it as regards the whole experience of the thing. To wit, the photo below looks like something I would most definitely shell out a hundred bucks to stand in front of for three days and have my ass handed to me by awesome bands. If you disagree, I suggest you take the next few months to reassess your priorities.

But speaking of awesome bands, a bunch more have just joined the lineup, including Maryland’s favorite sons Earthride. They’ll make the trip west and give a bit of East Coast representation out in the desert that I can only imagine will go over like groove-rolling gangbusters. That alone would be worth the $99 in my book, let alone the likes of Yawning Man (always great) and Fatso Jetson (always great) and Wo Fat (always great), who, for those of you who don’t read parentheticals (why not?) are always great, as well as Magic Castles and Great Electric Quest, whom I’ve not yet seen, but whose sounds are most certainly readily diggable.

Cool fest, man. These guys got something going out there in the desert.

The thirteen bands already made public online include: Sons of Otis; Ruby the Hatchet; Mondo Generator; Duel; Mark Deutrom; Year of the Cobra; Mountain of Smoke; Destroyer of Light; Love Gang; Black Maria; Prism Bitch and Sun Dog. Tickets cost $150 for three-day passes. A limited release of 300 early bird tickets for $99.99 are on sale now through Black Friday (midnight on November 29, 2019).

Dano Sanchez says “We are inspired to continue on our path with Monolith II. We want fans to come to Taos and let go of technology and constraints of urban living for three days. Let your soul breathe! What we offer is unique but still linked musically to festivals like Psycho Las Vegas, Levitation and Stoned and Dusted. We think festival goers will appreciate what we are doing here.”

Monolith on the Mesa is produced as a “destination” festival offering attendees music as well as the unique and mystical Taos experience which includes crisp, clean air on the high desert mesa, surrounded by unobstructed views of the Sangre de Christo Mountains. The festival is located adjacent to the Rio Grande del Norte National Monument. This enables festival goers to enjoy activities such as hiking, river rafting, bike trails, natural and resort hot springs — all making for an immersive experience unlike any other music festival.

Mondo Generator Premiere “When Death Comes”; As Good as it Gets (Fuck It) out Feb. 14

Posted in audiObelisk on October 17th, 2019 by JJ Koczan

mondo generator

Nothing says ‘love’ like a little Mondo Generator on Valentine’s Day. The Nick Oliveri-fronted bringers of desert chaos — with Mike Amster (Nebula, Abrams) on drums and Mike Pygmie (You Know Who, John Garcia and the Band of Gold) on guitar — will release their new album, As Good as it Gets (Fuck It), through Heavy Psych Sounds on Feb. 14, just as they’re digging into the midst of a massive European tour. The announcement of the concurrent release date wasn’t unexpected, but is certainly welcome just the same, as is the opening of preorders which by astounding coincidence also starts today for the record. Sometimes these things just work out.

As one would dare to hope, OliveriPygmie and Amster conjure due madness with “When Death Comes,” the first audio to make its way to the public from As Good as it Gets (Fuck It), and in well under three minutes’ time, theymondo generator as good as it gets fuck it reconfirm the sense of punk rock danger that’s been at heart in Mondo Generator since their debut, Cocaine Rodeo, in 2000, and in Oliveri‘s work even before that in Queens of the Stone Age and Kyuss. As that first full-length turns 20, it’s only fair that Mondo Generator should remain so unpredictable, and while “When Death Comes” might find Oliveri tempering his trademark vicious scream to a degree, there’s simply no telling at this point what the rest of As Good as it Gets (Fuck It) might hold in nodule-inducing abrasion.

Or, you know, not. Again, you can never really be sure what’s coming.

Obviously I haven’t heard the entirety of As Good as it Gets (Fuck It) yet, or I suppose I would, but it’s early days yet with preorders just launched and the artwork newly posted and all that kind of stuff. Plenty of time for these things as we get closer to next Feb. 14, but of course if you’re the type who likes to get your roses in advance, this would be an entirely different kind of gift to consider.

Enjoy “When Death Comes” below:

When Death Comes is the first single taken from the brand new Mondo Generator album As Good As It Gets (Fuck It).

The band is coming back after 8 years with a new line up: Nick Oliveri (ex Kyuss, Queens of the Stone Age), Mike Pygmie and Mike Amster. The album will see the light February 14th via Heavy Psych Sounds.

The pre-order for this album (as well as a “lost” record from 2010 as well as the new Nick Oliveri N.O Hits At All Vol. 666) start today:
www.heavypsychsounds.com

The band will be also touring Europe during February and March 2020, including HPS Fests in Paris, Antwerp, London and Deventer.

Mondo Generator and Nick Oliveri Announce New Releases on Heavy Psych Sounds

Posted in Whathaveyou on October 11th, 2019 by JJ Koczan

So it’s multi-pronged Nick Oliveri news from Heavy Psych Sounds. All album-related. First and foremost, a new Mondo Generator album. That’s cool. New lineup, same Nick. I’d expect it to be totally off the rails and you should too. Dude has a whole career demonstrating his love of screamy punk, so no reason to think that’s abated. Cool beans, daddy-o.

Second, a lost Mondo Generator album from 2010. Wondering why it’s been lost. His whole SWAT-standoff was 2011, so that timing doesn’t really fit. Maybe we’ll find out, maybe not, but right on either way. That might be even rawer than the new record.

Third, a new installment of the apparently ongoing series of N.O. Hits at All compilation releases that Heavy Psych Sounds has been doing over the last couple years. What on earth could be left? I’m sure plenty.

And if you’re wondering as to the timing on any of this, Mondo Generator are rolling out on a massive European tour next February, so it doesn’t seem unreasonable to think something will show up around then, though we won’t find out for sure until next week when the presales go up.

Till then, the PR wire:

Mondo Generator Announce Massive European Tour

Posted in Whathaveyou on September 24th, 2019 by JJ Koczan

mondo generator

I guess the underlying message here is to keep an eye out for news of a new Mondo Generator album. I know that when the Nick Oliveri-fronted three-piece signed to Heavy Psych Sounds back in June, it was specifically with the label’s booking wing for European representation, and hey, that’s cool. But would Oliveri, guitarist Mike Pygmie (also John Garcia) and drummer Mike Amster (also Nebula, ex-Blaak Heat, etc.) really go on tour for nearly a month and a half without a record to support? There have already been a steady stream of Oliveri-related offerings through Heavy Psych Sounds over the last couple years, and certainly the Italian imprint has its fair share of CA desert bands under its banner at this point in Brant BjorkYawning ManNebulaFatso Jetson, etc., so yeah. I’ll just say that when and if the press release comes in between now and, let’s say, January, I’m going to take credit for having called it ahead of time.

Here are the tour dates from the PR wire. There are many of them:
