Streaming: Acid King Interview with Lori S. for Busse Woods 20th Anniversary

Posted in audiObelisk, Features on September 19th, 2019 by JJ Koczan

acid king

Beginning tomorrow night at Northwest Hesh Fest in Portland, Oregon, heavy rock heroes Acid King will head out on a full-US tour celebrating the 20th anniversary of their now-classic 1999 full-length, Busse Woods (discussed here). Originally issued through Frank Kozik‘s Man’s Ruin Records imprint and subsequently by Small Stone in 2004 and on vinyl by Kreation Records in 2007, Busse Woods has been newly re-released by RidingEasy Records in honor of its 20 years. And rightly so, frankly. As I pointlessly fight the urge to wax poetic about its haze-drenched riffs and ultra-languid but ultra-heavy groove, I think it’s nonetheless fair to call Busse Woods one of the most pivotal heavy rock albums of all time. And yes, I mean all time. Your ’60s groundbreakers, your ’70s biker rockers, your ’80s doomers, your ’90s stoners, whatever the fuck happened in the aughts and your ’10s revivalists. Put Acid King up next to any of them and they’ll more than hold their own. You want to put Busse Woods out there again for a new generation to enjoy? That’s only making the world a better place.

They’ll play the record in its staggeringly righteous entirety on the tour as they did earlier this year in Europe, and when I spoke to Lori about it a couple weeks ago, she was in the process of getting ready to go. The lone remaining founder of the band, she’s joined by longtime/sometimes bassist Rafa Martinez (also drummer for Black Cobra) and drummer Bil Bowman, though when Busse Woods came out it was Brian Hill (gone before he even got his picture in the CD liner) on bass and Joey Osbourne on drums, the latter of whom would last until 2017. In the interview, she speaks about players coming and going, recording back when with Billy Anderson and releasing through Man’s Ruin, as well as the general state of what heavy rock was at the time, as well as being surprised initially by Busse Woods‘ staying power in the new digital age of stat-ready listenership. That is, it wasn’t until she saw the number of times “Silent Circle” had been streamed that she knew how big the song actually was for the band.

And I did bring it up in the conversation — because how could I not? — but 10 years ago, I did an interview with Lori as well about the 10th anniversary of Busse Woods in which she talked about the recording process, Billy Anderson‘s relationship drama, and much more besides. She goes track-by-track through the record in that piece. It’s pretty cool, even a decade after the fact (and another decade after that fact too, I guess).

The advantage of this interview? You finally get to hear the proper pronunciation of “Busse.” Even if you think you know it, you know you want confirmation.

So I won’t keep you from it.

Please enjoy:

Acid King Announce Busse Woods 20th Anniversary Tour and Reissue

Posted in Whathaveyou on May 21st, 2019 by JJ Koczan

acid king

Fuck yes. Acid King. Playing Busse Woods. 20th anniversary. Reissue on RidingEasy Records. Fuzz. “Electric Machine.” The whole bit. What the hell is going to be better than that? Whatever else you had planned, can it. Get yourself to where you really need to be and nod yourself into oblivion. Seriously. This is going to be fucking incredible. Desert island record.

The reissue is out Aug. 30 with modified art and a new master, which is fine because it’s probably going to make it louder and that’ll be just great thank you kindly.

Is the show in your calendar yet? It should be. I just added it. Might have to trek down to Philly for two in a row… Hmm…

Northwest Hesh Fest 2019 Lineup Announced with Acid King, Red Fang, Nebula and More

Posted in Whathaveyou on May 20th, 2019 by JJ Koczan

northwest hesh fest skull

That’s a pretty good bill, man. Seriously, who’s better than Acid King? Anyone? I just started watching the video at the bottom of this post and god damn, that band is awesome. You know 2019 is the 20th anniversary of Busse Woods and they’ve already announced some celebratory shows, but whenever you can see them, god damn, just go. And having them headline a night with Witch Mountain, Wizard Rifle and Warish (like a Nanotear showcase), with Nebula, Red Fang, Black Elk, Sasquatch, Holy Grove, Eagle Claw and American Sharks playing across the other two nights, the last night ending with the weirdness of putting Necrot and Fat Tony back to back? Well, yeah, like I said, that’s a pretty good bill. I won’t be there to see it, but if you are, I promise I’ll be jealous.

They’ve got tickets for sale now, and I don’t know how big these rooms are because they’re on the other end of the country, but I know that even looking at the list of bands I’m like, “Duh, I should go to that,” so I’d imagine even more people feel that way when, you know, it’s an actual possibility for them to do so.

Pray for the master:

Stoned and Dusted Announces Full Lineup; Party in the Desert

Posted in Whathaveyou on February 19th, 2019 by JJ Koczan

stoned and dusted banner

There wasn’t really any doubt, but it’s nice to have confirmation that the lineup for Stoned and Dusted is awesome. So there you have Melvins, Fu Manchu, Brant Bjork, King Buffalo, Yawning Man, Acid King, Black Mountain, Lo-Pan, REZN, BigPig, Del-Toros, Sgt. Papers and, oh yeah, Radio Moscow for a bit of the ultra-boogie. I was having a conversation not so long ago with an artist who played last year and was talking about how the sound guy was indeed spaced way the hell out, so when you look at the poster and see “Sound Guy on Acid” listed above the Mad Alchemy Liquid Light Show, you should know they may be speaking literally. No doubt that will only add to the one-of-a-kind experience of the desert’s own heavy party.

The lineup speaks for itself, so I’ll spare you the get-there-if-you-can-get-there rant and just drop the ticket link here for your purchasing and travel planning. There’s also a Spotify playlist below that, while I imagine you’re well familiar with the bulk of these acts, is no less welcome for that, as far as I’m concerned.

Dig:

Stoned and Dusted 2019

Acid King Announce Northeastern Shows in Philly and Brooklyn

Posted in Whathaveyou on July 10th, 2018 by JJ Koczan

Hell’s bells, I know you don’t need me to tell you to go see Acid King whenever you get the chance. You already know that. Still, isn’t it all the more worth reinforcing the point when the long-running San Fran trio are coming east for all of two — count ’em: one, two — shows at the end of this month? And sure, their dates at new hotspot The Kingsland and prior-established hotspot Kung Fu Necktie happen to coincide with the same two nights Sleep will be in Brooklyn, but seriously, what the hell? You go to one one night and the other the other. It’s called logistics. I’m not making this shit up.

Acid King, with the new, partially-not-new lineup of founding guitarist/vocalist Lori S., returning bassist Rafa Martinez (see also: Black Cobra‘s drum madness) and drummer Bil Bowman will also head out on a tour of the Southwest as the only not-all-caps band alongside Oregonian cosmic doom forerunners YOB and L.A. doomcrafters CHRCH, and while personally I think they should change their name to ACID KING for the duration, that tour is the stuff of legend either way. Enough that I just asked The Patient Mrs. if we could fly out to Albuquerque to see it. No. No, we can’t. Nice thought though.

One is also expecting an imminent European tour announcement from Acid King, who’ve already been confirmed for Desertfest Belgium, Keep it Low and the Up in Smoke festivals this Fall in Antwerp, Munich and Pratteln, Switzerland, respectively. Worth keeping an eye out, as always.

What’s so far confirmed follows here, snagged from social media:

Desertfest Belgium 2018 First Announcement: Acid King, YOB, John Garcia & Wo Fat Added

Posted in Whathaveyou on May 7th, 2018 by JJ Koczan

desertfest belgium 2018 banner

This past weekend the Desertfests in Berlin and London took place. The Spring Desertfests. The timing, then makes perfect sense for Desertfest Belgium 2018 to make its first lineup announcement for this October. One imagines Desertfest Athens 2018 won’t be far behind if it hasn’t already put word out. Either way, the Antwerp lineup is already a doozy, with four acts added any of whom coul serve as a headliner if the fest so desired: YOBAcid KingJohn Garcia and Wo Fat.

Garcia is of particular note here since it seems he’s got a new — or at least re-branded — band backing him. That seems to make it likely he’ll take on tracks from a variety of his projects over the last two-plus decades — HermanoSlo BurnKyussUnida, etc. — but I’m more curious to know if there will be original material as well, if John Garcia an the Band of Gold have been writing. Call me greedy. I like information.

Here’s some from the fest:

Last week we had a resounding start of this year’s event, with the Early Bird tickets selling out in less than 24 hours, and not a single name announced. We hear you loud and clear, people of Desertfest! And this is why we are excited to announce the FIRST NAMES confirmed for this year’s edition.

Few bands embody the spirit of Desertfest more than the mighty Yob: intense and heavy, yet full of love. It is only fitting that we invite them back after the release of their eighth studio album. Another scene legend that surprisingly has never played our fest before is John Garcia – so we decided to fix that. He’ll be playing the fest with his new outfit The Band of Gold.

One more name that needs no introduction is Acid King – who may or may not have new material ready by the time they reach our shores. And finally, we are glad to have Wo Fat returning to the festival, as their last passage was charged with emotion and passion.

So there we are – four names that just ooze awesomeness. And with that, we also start selling the REDUCED COMBI TICKETS, 3 days at the price of €95 which is an absolute steal. If you missed out on the Early Birds, don’t make the same mistake twice! This edition is gonna be red hot. In fact, we’d say it already is!

Keep it Low 2018: Colour Haze, Acid King, The Picturebooks, Sasquatch, Sundog & The Great Machine Confirmed

Posted in Whathaveyou on March 12th, 2018 by JJ Koczan

keep it low 2018 banner

If I can be completely honest for a moment, of all the European festivals that happen each Fall, none of them sets me to daydreaming quite like Keep it Low. Is it the fact that a headlining set from Colour Haze is pretty much guaranteed at this point? Well, that certainly doesn’t hurt. But in addition to that, it’s the vibe of the thing. Every year, fests start spewing out their lineups and try to outdo each other, and I have no doubt that 2018 won’t be any different. It’s a lot of fun, but Keep it Low tends to sidestep the hype in favor of a more laid back approach, and to me that speaks to the kind of vibe I’d like to check out on a cool October weekend in Munich. Acid King, Colour Haze and Sasquatch playing Keep it Low 2018? Pardon me while my mind wanders…

What follows here are actually the first two announcements from the festival via social medias. I put them together as one thing because, like with Up in Smoke the other day, I wasn’t getting Sound of Liberation‘s updates. Once again, that problem has hopefully been fixed at this point, so I should be able to keep up from here on out.

Emphasis on “should.”

Here’s the latest, anyhow:

keep it low 2018 poster

Keep it Low #6 – Oct. 19 & 20, 2018

The first three bands confirmed for Keep It Low – Festival 2018: Acid King, Sasquatch & The Great Machine! Regular Tickets are also now available! Grab yours quick (remember that Early Birds were gone in only 1 day!)

Acid King – Bathed in distortion and baptized in a plume of smoke, the Bay Area trio fronted by talented Lori S. is rocking the heavy scene for more than 2 decades and we are just thrilled to host them for our sixth edition of the festival.

Sasquatch – Californian Dudes are riffrockers to the core: mixing elements of 70s rock, metal and psychedelia…we’re all in for a hell of a party !

The Great Machine – Three piece heavy rock machine from Tel Aviv, Israel, known for their intense and straight forward live performances. Check them out, you won’t regret it!

Today, we’re thrilled to tell you that Colour Haze will be playing their yearly & exclusive Munich show at Keep It Low – Festival! The band has recently added a fourth bandmember (piano/organ/keys) and as usual you can expect an outstanding live set. We’re also stoked to welcome the amazing alternative-blues-rock duo The Picturebooks, and Munich-based heavy-blues outfit Sundog (who by the way will release their new EP “Where My Bones Lie” on March 17th at Feierwerk, you should check them)!
