Heavy Psych Sounds Fest Italy 2024 Announces First Bands

Posted in Whathaveyou on December 12th, 2023 by JJ Koczan

Okeydokey, what do we learn here? Bongzilla will be in Europe this Spring, and Mondo Generator will be out to follow up on Nick Oliveri‘s winter solo tour, and Kadabra will go supporting their most excellent 2023 outing, Umbra (review here), though that was already apparent from the first Desertfest London announce. Along with MR.BISON, the esteemed Ufomammut — who’ll have a new LP out sometime in 2024, allegedly — Greek mainstays Nightstalker and upstarts 1782, speedrockers Tankzilla and punkers The Clamps, that’s the bill as it stands that will swap acts back and forth across two nights in Bologna and Trieste next May for Heavy Psych Sounds Fest Italy 2024.

This is not the end of the announcements, of course, but it’s a rousing start as the Italian label and booking agency continues to branch out to new places. You’ll note Trieste is home for Rocket Panda Management, who are involved here and also behind the StonerKras Fest that’s taken place the last couple of years later in the summer. I assume that’s still happening too, and will do so until I hear or see otherwise.

I don’t have numbers on the site’s readership in Bologna or Trieste, but I think these things are relevant anyway exactly because of the above: they show you who’s going to be where when. And it gives me an excuse to post the Kadabra record again. Double-win.

StonerKras Fest 2023 Completes Lineup

Posted in Whathaveyou on May 12th, 2023 by JJ Koczan

It’s a pretty distractible morning apparently, but I’m going to try to finish this post before my head meanders to one of the other three I’ve currently got going at the same time. So it goes when you’ve spent the week not answering emails while doing a Quarterly Review; always a bit of catchup. I’m happy to note, though, that this news only came in yesterday, so I’m not nearly as behind on it as, well, whatever will probably go up on Monday, for example.

StonerKras Fest 2023 has announced its complete lineup for this July in Trieste, Italy. The final bands added are Heavy Psych Sounds upstarts Margarita Witch Cult from the UK — their self-titled debut came out in April — as well as the evidently prolific and weird Long Hours and Mystic Majesty, whose first record was released in March. They join the ranks of 1000mods and Mondo Generator, who will headline the all-dayer set for July 15, and cap a bill that’s already grown more diverse from the first edition’s lineup last year. ‘Plant a seed and work your ass off to watch it grow,’ I think is the saying about music festivals.

As much fun as it is to pretend one might be able to abscond to the Italian northeast and catch this gig, it doesn’t seem likely I’ll make it out, but it’s been cool to keep up here and I’ll look forward to how StonerKras continues to develop in 2024. In the meantime, if you are in a position geographically or financially to get there, tickets are on sale now.

As the PR wire tells it:

StonerKras Fest 2023 Announces New Bands & Ticket Presales

Posted in Whathaveyou on March 22nd, 2023 by JJ Koczan

With Mondo Generator, Trieste’s own TSO and Slovenian instrumentalists Jegulja in this second announcement, 2023’s StonerKras Fest embodies what seems to be the core mission of the festival in bringing together higher-profile touring acts — recall the first band unveiled was Greece’s 1000mods — with those local to the event’s locale near the Italy/Slovenia border. Trying to make something happen, to spread the word about a regional scene and support its bands while benefiting as well from providing a stop on European tours where otherwise there probably wouldn’t be one.

It’s an all-dayer, and last year’s inaugural edition had six bands, so it seems reasonable to think there’s at least one more announcement coming ahead of July,

!!! THREE MORE BANDS ANNOUNCED !!!

*** MONDO GENERATOR ***

– stoner punk legends from California –

Mondo Generator was formed in 1997 by Queens of the Stone Age bassist/singer Nick Oliveri. Initially intended as a solo/side project, the classic “Cocaine Rodeo” album was recorded that same year, but shelved until the Southern Lord label released it and its unique brand of criminal insanity to widespread acclaim and horror in the summer of 2000. The follow-up, “A Drug Problem That Never Existed,” was released jointly in the Summer of 2003 by Ipecac/Rekords Rekords to further critical acclaim. A worldwide tour followed that was chronicled on video for the DVD release “Use Once and Destroy Me”.

In 2004, Mondo Generator recorded and released “III The EP.” Oliveri began a solo acoustic career shortly after, which would see two full releases, “Demolition Day”, and 2010’s “Death Acoustic.” In 2006, Mondo Generator released “Dead Planet: SonicSlowMotionTrails” on English label Mother Tongue. It would be released worldwide the following year on Suburban Noize Records. In late 2010, Mondo Generator would be put on a back-burner as Oliveri rejoined Kyuss, re-branded as Kyuss Lives! (and now Vista Chino), which also featured John Garcia, Brant Bjork, and new guitarist Bruno Fevery. In summer 2012, the new Mondo Generator album, “Hell Comes To Your Heart,” was released by Mondo Media/Cobraside.

The band has come back with a new lineup (Nick Oliveri with Mike Pygmie on guitars and Michael Amster on drums), a brand new album FUCK IT and a bunch of represses via Heavy Psych Sounds !!!

*** TSO ***

– alternative rock from Trieste –

Founded by Abbrescia brothers in 2013 in Trieste, with two albums and a bunch of tours, TSO are working on their third record.

Catchy tunes, heavy riffs, some oddities and underground wizardry.

One of the best bands in town!

*** JEGULJA ***

– instrumental stoner metal from Slovenia –

Jegulja is a psychedelic stoner/metal trio with seventh drummer.

Jegulja has completed its second album Exit Sandman in 2020. The first Darkest Light album was [released in 2017].

Jegulja is Rok ‘Boogie’ Henigman on drums, Jure Gašper – baritone guitar and Jan Kozel – Fender Stratocaster.

StonerKras Fest 2023 Announces 1000mods to Play

Posted in Whathaveyou on February 20th, 2023 by JJ Koczan

Based in the north of Italy near the borders with Slovenia and Croatia, StonerKras Fest will hold its 2023 edition this July, with Greece’s 1000mods as the first act to be announced. That’s a solid pull out of the gate, though I’m left wondering if they’ll headline. You might recall in 2022 Nebula topped the bill, and while 1000mods are not necessarily as long-tenured as the reinvigorated L.A./desert mainstays and so can’t yet claim the same kind of generational influence — though their native underground would not be what it is without them, to be sure — they’re probably right around the same in terms of draw.

Last year’s StonerKras also dug into its regional sphere with a Glory Owl reunion featured in 2022, and certainly between Northern Italy, Slovenia and Croatia there’s plenty more to include and explore in that regard as they work their way toward a full lineup this time around. It was six bands in 2022, and if 1000mods aren’t headlining and there’s another big name coming in for the day, that already ups the stakes for this July. I know nothing, as ever, so we’ll see how it comes together presumably over the next few weeks/months as tickets go on sale and so on.

Or, to put it another way, more to come. For today, here’s this:

Buss Premiere “Canned Fear” Video; Debut LP Aroused Due Nov. 11

Posted in Bootleg Theater on September 15th, 2022 by JJ Koczan

buss

Northern Italy’s Buss will release their debut full-length, Aroused, on Nov. 11. The raw-styled fuzz trio from Trieste situated near the Slovenian border issued their self-titled debut EP (review here) in May 2020 (whoops…) and have been kicking around since, honing live chops while building toward the right time for the album’s arrival. As they move from the initial sample to begin with the buzz tones, punchy bass and throaty vocals of the 6:41 opener and longest track (immediate points) “Woland” and the gruff reaffirmation of “Canned Fear” (premiering below), they are as much punk as heavy rock, even if they groove like the latter, and bassist Erik Carpani‘s vocals, with just a bit of reverb, remind of Venom circa Black Metal; a heaping dose of fuckall present and accounted for as a defining aspect of their craft.

Carpani, guitarist Patrik Pregarc and drummer Ivan Kralj make the most of their rawness as the centerpiece “Pistol Shrimp” roll out brash midtempo nod in answer to the garage metal chug and thud of “Iron Flies” just before, but in that song and throughout, the swagger leans hard on sneering arrogance, furthering the punker underpinning and tying Aroused together around its basic introductory premise. I’ve no doubt, in other words, that if Buss had issued their debut long-player in 2020 or 2021 as they otherwise might have, they would already be at work on what’s next, but as it stands, they’re not held back at all for the misfortune of timing (and so much else). If anything, with live music “back,” the energy with which they execute these songs feels all the more stage-resonant. That is, after listening to the record, I’d be glad to watch them play a set on an actual stage. That’s how it’s supposed to work, right?

Digging into the second half of the seven-songs-plus-bonus-track album, “Onion Rings” brings bluesy vibes in its opening stretch of lead guitar and offers one of Aroused‘s most vibrant swings, a classic shuffle-into-release working from the verse to the chorus with the steady pulse of the drums beneath. There’s room in the 5:58 runtime for a jam and a slowdown both, and Buss don’t waste that time, Pregarc‘s guitar once again holding court in the first position, with Carpani‘s vocals roughing up the sound along the way. Their vision of classic heavy is more Atomic Rooster than Black Sabbath in “Garden of Fools,” but that solo and the progression underneath is pure Iommi and clearly intended as same. As with the fuzzroller “Beer Song,” tucked away like the stumbling patron the bartender stuck in the corner with a hopefully restorative cup of coffee, Buss ask little of the listener and offer much in their no-pretense, here-because-we-love-it style.

Europe’s heavy underground, even if you want to narrow it just to Italy, is slammed with bands. Saturated. How Buss will ultimately stand themselves out from the multitudes, if they will, remains to be seen, but there’s opportunity for developing their sound along any number of lines throughout Aroused, and if you can’t hear at least some of that potential within “Canned Fear,” it’s not the band’s fault. Between metal, punk, heavy rock, and that semi-cover bonus track “Mint Julep”‘s casual lean, they shine through, putting the pieces together to make something of their own from what’s come before and what’s out there now. I’m not gonna predict their future or tell you they’re destined to be some kind of a big deal — not saying such a thing couldn’t happen, either, of course — but Buss sound eager to get out, hit as many stages as possible and win support the hard way. Such multifaceted traditionalism will suit them well in that, in addition to the strength of songwriting on display here.

“Canned Fear” premieres in the video below, followed by a band quote and done PR wire whatnot, for your convenient perusal. Having done a few premieres for Buss at this point, I’m glad to be on board for this one. Don’t sleep on the record.

Enjoy:

Buss, “Canned Fear” video premiere

Buss on Aroused:

Whatever happened in the past two years, clearly showed that we probably chose the worst historical period to make and enjoy music. Don’t need to tell you what we’re talking about. But even if sabotaged and talented in making wrong decisions, we found enough time to work on something that bands use to do: a full album.

AROUSED was the right word to describe our mood: lustful, provocative and disappointed. Sexy woman’s fingers on the cover, can clearly describe our pleasure in our music, but still uncomfortable with our times. All songs are written and performed by Buss except the bonus track “Mint Julep” written by the Italian author Nino Ferrer in the ’60s and revisited in our style.

Our riffs were recorded with only heavy vintage classic instruments and even with prototypes. Nothing strange if at some point the bass cabinet burned down. Recorded and cuddled by the only reliable Truck Terminal Studio, mixed by James Atkinson at The Stationhouse in the U.K. and mastered by Claudio Bisi.

Presale: https://bussband.bandcamp.com/releases

First single of the upcoming album by Buss. Recorded in MKNŽ Ilirska Bistrica by Klemen Čepar and mastered by Matej Čebulec. Special thanks to Pablo Scarpa, Rok Samsa and MKNŽ guys. Powered by Rocket Panda Management.

1. Woland
2. Canned Fear
3. Iron Flies
4. Pistol Shrimp
5. Onion Rings
6. Garden of Fools
7. Beer Song

StonerKras Fest 2022: Glory Owl Reunion Added; Lineup Complete

Posted in Whathaveyou on July 7th, 2022 by JJ Koczan

STONERKRAS FEST 2022 FINAL POSTER GLORY OWL

The final act to be announced for the first StonerKras Festival — to be held next month in Trieste, Italy — is hometown rockers Glory Owl, whose reunion rounds out a six-band bill topped by Nebula but mostly featuring acts from Italy and Slovenia. This only makes sense, considering that’s where the promoters putting it together are based, so the only question that remains is how everyone will work alongside each other on this first go, and I guess if next year StonerKras will be held in Slovenia instead.

And if you’re not up on geography (not that I am), Trieste is in the north of Italy, in Prosecco — yes, like the not-quite-champagne — and Prosek in Slovenia is part of the same region despite being in the neighboring nation. There you have it.

Oh, and here you have it too:

STONERKRAS FEST 2022 FINAL POSTER

(stoner rock from Trieste)

Do you like distorted guitars and Black Sabbath? Do feel nostalgic for football from the 80’s? Well then Glory Owl is the band you’re looking for!

Glory Owl are five good looking, ravenous adults: their hearts are full of untapped teenage anger.

Your nostalgia for much simpler times will be triggered, when a players’ prowess was measured on the length of their moustache or on how many cigarettes they smoked on a bench.

Or even better times, when beer was a currency and sweaty armpits were the latest fashion in Former Yugoslavian’s underground clubs.

StonerKras Fest to Hold Inaugural Edition Aug. 20; Nebula Confirmed

Posted in Whathaveyou on June 14th, 2022 by JJ Koczan

stonerkras fest 2022 nebula band photo

When Nebula announced their extensive European tour back in April, the Aug. 20 date in Trieste, Italy, was left as a TBA, and it’s been revealed that the reason for that is that the band’s first Euro run supporting their new album, Transmission From Mothership Earth — which was itself announced just about two weeks ago — will cap at the inaugural edition of the StonerKras Fest, a collaboration between Rocket Panda Management (this means I won’t be surprised when Trieste locals Buss are added) and Slovenia’s Mladinski Krožek Prosek-Kontovel. The stated mission is to represent both regions, and fair enough since there’s plenty of heavy to go around, but with Nebula on board, their reach proves immediately international and I doubt the Cali legends will be the only act from elsewhere to play.

Though I say that and I have no idea how many bands there will be on the finished bill, so take it for what it is in being next-to-baseless speculation, but whatever. Even as a single-day all-dayer, I have every reason to believe this won’t be the last edition of StonerKras Fest given the personnel involved, and who knows, maybe you’ll be in that part of the world in August following Nebula on tour like some kind of hippie revivalist thing and you’ll hit this one up. Or maybe you’re just sitting on your ass thinking it would be rad to go someplace you’ve never been and have a once-in-a-lifetime experience there. I say do it. Life’s too short and too generally wretched to let that kind of opportunity slip. As ever: quit your dayjob. For yourself, if not for rock and roll.

Buss Premiere ‘Live at Dežolation Fest’ Video

Posted in Bootleg Theater on September 8th, 2021 by JJ Koczan

buss dezolation fest

Trieste, Italy, raw heavy rock three-piece Buss are currently at work on their full-length debut, impending for next year. That’s good news for anyone who heard their self-titled EP (review here) last year and thought to themselves they could do with more. I count myself in that number. It was right on earlier this year when they posted a couple live songs filmed on what looked like a nice patio, and the clip below for the Leaf Hound cover “Freelance Fiend” and the band’s own new song “Astrosatan,” filmed at Dežolation Fest follows in a similar spirit.

Don’t know Dežolation Fest? Well, the narrative — blessings and peace upon it — is that Buss threw a big ol’ party about a month ago, and the video would seem to prove it worked out. Buss play on a small bare-wood stage lit by floodlights in the dusky evening that would be night by the time they’re done, and sure enough there are people there, outside among the trees. “Freelance Fiend” is already in progress as the video fades in, and “Astrosatan” has a darker riff, standing it for an additional element of proto-metal amid the boogie and ’70s rock vibes.

It looks like a good time. A lot does at this point, right? Let’s assume if you’re reading this, you weren’t there for this, so maybe it’s that much easier to consider it the embodiment of a certain ideal. Show up and play. Think of generator parties in abandoned desert skate parks. Think of forest-fests throughout Europe, some official in the sense of having any permits whatsoever, some decidedly not. I don’t know where Buss‘ to-do fell on that particular scale, but kudos to them for making a thing happen one way or the other, and further, for filming at least part of their set to give a teaser for their upcoming debut. I’ll be looking forward to hearing that.

Until then, enjoy the clip:

Buss, Live at Dežolation Fest 2021

Sick of silence, Buss & friends had organized the first edition of the Dežolation Fest. Lot of beer, awesome grill, great music and good people had transformed an empty field into a memorable land.

Here for you Buss live at Dežolation Fest performing Freelance Fiend by Leaf Hound and Astrosatan from the upcoming album.

Buss is a trio influenced by 70s underground sounds and 90s desert rock. We met in high school and started playing together just for fun.

Later we started writing some songs and performing live gigs. In May 2020 the band released the self-titled debut EP with the support from Rocket Panda Management.

Buss are now recording new stuff for their first LP that will be out in 2022, followed by an EU tour.
