By the time Prague’s Acid Row take the stage at StonerKras Fest 2026 in Trieste, Italy, this July, the band’s new album, Magic, will have seen both its digital and physical release (May 1 and 16, respectively) come and go, and I don’t know what the status currently is, but trad-metallers Tytus recorded their own third full-length last Fall and I haven’t seen any announcement for it, but it could well be out by summer too for all I know. These two joining Stoned Jesus broadens the bill stylistically and geographcally, and with more to come, the two-day fifth edition of StonerKras is beginning to take shape. What I’m curious about is how many bands will ultimately play each day and how it will all play out sound-wise.

To the best of my recollection, StonerKras has always been one-day, about five or six bands, so if there’s two days this year, then time’s getting on to get all the names out. Fair enough for the festival to expand, as it has looked like a family-friendly good time since it started. I guess there’s time still for everybody to be revealed, but so far it’s three different bands bringing three different sounds, all of them right on.

Acid Row is a Czech band active since around 2012, known for its explosive blend of stoner rock and punk, spiced with elements of doom, psychedelia, and ’90s grunge. Originally formed in Plzeň and relocated to Prague in 2019, the band has built a reputation for its ferocious live energy and an affinity for a darker, “devilish” aesthetic. Currently, the band performs as a trio consisting of Alex Fonar (vocals, bass), Dominik Klesa (guitar), and Radek Bacík (drums).

At some point this year, maybe even by July when StonerKras 2026 is set to take place, Stoned Jesus will issue the second installment of their intended triptych in the form of Songs to Moon, following the 2025 highlight Songs to Sun (review here) and preceding 2027’s intended Songs to Earth. If you like good news — and you know I do — that should certainly qualify.

That Stoned Jesus are the first band confirmed for StonerKras Fest in Trieste, Italy — hence the ‘+TBA’ on the poster below — tells you they’ll probably be on tour at the time, coming from Germany where the Ukraine-rooted band are now living (because endless war), but it also tells you StonerKras is going to be killer. I assume Stoned Jesus will headline, since the lineups for StonerKras have tended to be low-key killer, doable-with-a-family, all-dayer-type affairs complete with vending and such, but I don’t actually know that, so will look forward to seeing who else is taking part.

Stoned Jesus, “Shadowland” official video

It’s a cool one. I dig the whole vibe here. The way StonerKras comes across to me is so much more like an open party than a typical heavyfest. It’s six bands in 2025, which isn’t nothing, but consider that part of the intention is that the party goes all night for those who’d be mad enough to ever want it to — I know some humans are still in their 20s, and that’s adorable — and a friendly experiential presentation that includes shiatsu massage and vendors selling probably hippie clothes and I don’t know what, as well as the ongoing encourangement toward family attendance, and it seems like it would be a laid back time either way. I don’t know that the kid would make it to the afterparty, but I know for sure I wouldn’t, so there you go.

And the lineup’s good too. Truckfighters were previously announced, but I saw MR.BISON in January and they were expansive despite such solid groove. Them Moose Rush and Zolle are both righteous in completely different ways. I am less familiar with Veuve — though I know they were on Argonauta at one point — and Black Pope, but if you’re going to a thing like this, you go ready to learn. That’s not to say I’ll be there, sadly, but even the hypothetical is fun.

StonerKras Fest 2024 Aftermovie

After a 2024 lineup that featured Colour Haze and Black Rainbows, among others, the Trieste, Italy-based StonerKras Fest is starting big with its 2025 reveals — no less than Swedish fuzz kingpins Truckfighters will take part. Among the most reliable live acts heavy rock and roll has ever produced, Truckfighters will play this show as a regional exclusive, Trieste being situated near the Italian/Slovenian border.

I don’t know how many acts the festival will ultimately have – last year’s StonerKras was an eminently manageable five bands — but particularly if you’re looking for a smaller fest-type event where you can take your family, this is one to keep in mind. I’m doing the same, for whatever that might be worth. Tickets are up for presale now, and I will do my best to keep up with announcements and details as they emerge.

If you are interested in groovy, stoner-influenced, progressive and melodic hard rock you probably know about Truckfighters already. “The best band that ever existed” as Josh Homme said in the 2011 “fuzzomentary” Truckfighters. You might also know the story about how Niklas ‘Dango‘ Källgren teamed up with bassist and vocalist Oskar ‘Ozo’ Cedermalm in a worn down rehearsal space in Örebro, Sweden in 2001 and how the first song they ever recorded, Desert Cruiser, since then has gone on to become a desert rock anthem. Truckfighters, live at Desertfest New York 2024

I’m never going to claim to be an expert on the visual arts, whether it’s a question of aesthetic or technique. But I know when I see something awesome, and the three-eyed ribbitdragon adorning the poster below for Trieste, Italy’s StonerKras Fest 2024 this July for sure qualifies. The art is by Mirkow Gastow, who’s done other posters and graphics in and around the operating sphere of Heavy Psych Sounds, whose flagship outfit Black Rainbows feature in the third edition of StonerKras‘ lineup, assuring the all-dayer’s cosmic-party quotient will be met before German heavy psychedelic forebears Colour Haze headline as part of their ongoing 30th anniversary celebration in 2024.

Last July’s StonerKras had seven bands on the bill — among them 1000mods and Nick Oliveri‘s Mondo Generator — and Black Mamba Rock Explosion, Savanah and Britof round out the stated-as-full lineup of five for this year, but I wouldn’t be surprised if maybe part of that is to allow for longer set times or changeovers, or just to let the crowd take in some of the merch stands or, you know, get a massage. I can’t remember ever seeing a massage therapist on-grounds at a festival before, but speaking as a human living in a body that’s not getting any younger, I get it. Not all considerations are as timeless or ethereally rad as a three-eyed ribbitdragon. Sometimes your back hurts.

Colour Haze, “Tempel” live in Karlsruhe, DE, Feb. 16, 2024

It’s a pretty distractible morning apparently, but I’m going to try to finish this post before my head meanders to one of the other three I’ve currently got going at the same time. So it goes when you’ve spent the week not answering emails while doing a Quarterly Review; always a bit of catchup. I’m happy to note, though, that this news only came in yesterday, so I’m not nearly as behind on it as, well, whatever will probably go up on Monday, for example.

StonerKras Fest 2023 has announced its complete lineup for this July in Trieste, Italy. The final bands added are Heavy Psych Sounds upstarts Margarita Witch Cult from the UK — their self-titled debut came out in April — as well as the evidently prolific and weird Long Hours and Mystic Majesty, whose first record was released in March. They join the ranks of 1000mods and Mondo Generator, who will headline the all-dayer set for July 15, and cap a bill that’s already grown more diverse from the first edition’s lineup last year. ‘Plant a seed and work your ass off to watch it grow,’ I think is the saying about music festivals.

As much fun as it is to pretend one might be able to abscond to the Italian northeast and catch this gig, it doesn’t seem likely I’ll make it out, but it’s been cool to keep up here and I’ll look forward to how StonerKras continues to develop in 2024. In the meantime, if you are in a position geographically or financially to get there, tickets are on sale now.

With Mondo Generator, Trieste’s own TSO and Slovenian instrumentalists Jegulja in this second announcement, 2023’s StonerKras Fest embodies what seems to be the core mission of the festival in bringing together higher-profile touring acts — recall the first band unveiled was Greece’s 1000mods — with those local to the event’s locale near the Italy/Slovenia border. Trying to make something happen, to spread the word about a regional scene and support its bands while benefiting as well from providing a stop on European tours where otherwise there probably wouldn’t be one.

It’s an all-dayer, and last year’s inaugural edition had six bands, so it seems reasonable to think there’s at least one more announcement coming ahead of July,

Mondo Generator was formed in 1997 by Queens of the Stone Age bassist/singer Nick Oliveri. Initially intended as a solo/side project, the classic “Cocaine Rodeo” album was recorded that same year, but shelved until the Southern Lord label released it and its unique brand of criminal insanity to widespread acclaim and horror in the summer of 2000. The follow-up, “A Drug Problem That Never Existed,” was released jointly in the Summer of 2003 by Ipecac/Rekords Rekords to further critical acclaim. A worldwide tour followed that was chronicled on video for the DVD release “Use Once and Destroy Me”.

In 2004, Mondo Generator recorded and released “III The EP.” Oliveri began a solo acoustic career shortly after, which would see two full releases, “Demolition Day”, and 2010’s “Death Acoustic.” In 2006, Mondo Generator released “Dead Planet: SonicSlowMotionTrails” on English label Mother Tongue. It would be released worldwide the following year on Suburban Noize Records. In late 2010, Mondo Generator would be put on a back-burner as Oliveri rejoined Kyuss, re-branded as Kyuss Lives! (and now Vista Chino), which also featured John Garcia, Brant Bjork, and new guitarist Bruno Fevery. In summer 2012, the new Mondo Generator album, “Hell Comes To Your Heart,” was released by Mondo Media/Cobraside.

The band has come back with a new lineup (Nick Oliveri with Mike Pygmie on guitars and Michael Amster on drums), a brand new album FUCK IT and a bunch of represses via Heavy Psych Sounds !!!

Mondo Generator, Live at Freak Valley Festival 2022

Based in the north of Italy near the borders with Slovenia and Croatia, StonerKras Fest will hold its 2023 edition this July, with Greece’s 1000mods as the first act to be announced. That’s a solid pull out of the gate, though I’m left wondering if they’ll headline. You might recall in 2022 Nebula topped the bill, and while 1000mods are not necessarily as long-tenured as the reinvigorated L.A./desert mainstays and so can’t yet claim the same kind of generational influence — though their native underground would not be what it is without them, to be sure — they’re probably right around the same in terms of draw.

Last year’s StonerKras also dug into its regional sphere with a Glory Owl reunion featured in 2022, and certainly between Northern Italy, Slovenia and Croatia there’s plenty more to include and explore in that regard as they work their way toward a full lineup this time around. It was six bands in 2022, and if 1000mods aren’t headlining and there’s another big name coming in for the day, that already ups the stakes for this July. I know nothing, as ever, so we’ll see how it comes together presumably over the next few weeks/months as tickets go on sale and so on.
