Clouds Taste Satanic Sign to Majestic Mountain Records

Posted in Whathaveyou on May 19th, 2022 by JJ Koczan

For the last eight years, New York instrumentalists Clouds Taste Satanic have been on their own wavelength within a doomly sphere, creating material that edges toward progressive and psychedelic and is no less comfortable in its most wretched moments. A new double-album will be issued later this year through Majestic Mountain Records, and to the best of my knowledge, the upcoming Tales of Demonic Possession is the first Clouds Taste Satanic full-length to receive a label-backed release, all their prior works having come out DIY-style.

They’ve worked hard in terms of self-promotion, and I wouldn’t expect that to stop, despite the allegiance with Majestic Mountain, since so much of the band’s presence is through social media. That said, they have hinted at plans to head to Europe in 2023, which if Majestic Mountain is thinking of putting together more fests, well… you can do that math on that one.

Congrats to the band and to the label. Here’s the announcement from the latter, including a quote from the former:

Your MMR Newswire once again comes knocking with an awesome update from the Mountain:

We are delighted to finally announce the signing of epically instrumental, post demonic doom beasts Clouds Taste Satanic.

A monumentally accomplished four-piece with a lengthy, prolific history of beautiful self-released and dynamic long format output, Clouds Taste Satanic use their dexterously deviant riff wizardry as an arcanely progressive vehicle which takes the listener on an expansively sinister voyage through psychedelically charged and rhythmically titanic territories.

The band gives us the following thoughts about joining The Majestic Crew:

“Anyone who knows Clouds Taste Satanic knows that for the most part, we’ve always done things on our own. When you are an Instrumental Doom band that plays 20-minute songs, it’s something you get comfortable with. Unlike most labels that preach diversity, Majestic Mountain walks the walk. Although the label boasts plenty of bands that define heavy, they are not afraid to release more eclectic and challenging albums that expand the definition of “Doom” and “Stoner”. It’s a label with passion and enthusiasm that looks to the future, not to the past, and for a band that wants to grow, it’s a perfect fit. Besides, Marco, Svempa and Vesper are good people who love music. That has to count for something.”

Clouds Taste Satanic gives us ‘Tales of Demonic Possession,’ which will be a four-headed demonic beast in double vinyl with the full Majestic Treatment.

Coming to you this autumn, presale information is imminent so keep an eye out for more!

Please join us in giving Clouds Taste Satanic a warm welcome to the Majestic Mountain Records Roster!

Clouds Taste Satanic Covers Album Cloud Covered Available to Preorder

Posted in Whathaveyou on March 12th, 2021 by JJ Koczan

If you were in Clouds Taste Satanic — the New York-based instrumental heavy/doomers who released their sixth LP, Second Sight (discussed here), in 2019 — and you were putting out a covers record, you’d probably find some variation on “cloud cover” to use as a title too, so don’t judge. Let’s face it, everybody — everyone, everywhere, ever — loves wordplay. If you don’t, you’re not human. It’s how I tell the difference between people and replicants. That’s right, my own personal Voight-Kampff.

The band issued parts of what’s become Cloud Covered as a series of digital singles last year and into early 2021, but fair enough to add some more and pull it all together under one banner. Who’s gonna argue? And they certainly don’t skimp on breadth, between Elton JohnNirvanaFlaming Lips and Sabbath. Wait, a doom band that likes more than doom? Who authorized this?

Cloud Covered hits March 19. Preorders are up via Bandcamp in case you’re the type who likes (1:) not playing by the rules and (2:) taking care of tasks in advance:

CLOUDS TASTE SATANIC 7th Album ‘Cloud Covered’ From Post-Doom Quartet Due This Month!

Pre-Order via Bandcamp: https://cloudstastesatanic.bandcamp.com/

As promised, the instrumental post-doom quartet CLOUDS TASTE SATANIC returns this month with its seventh full-length album, ‘CLOUD COVERED’. Due to release on Friday, March 19, 2021, the new record features covers of tunes that have had a profound influence on the band but are not necessarily from the Metal/Doom genre.

Portions of the album were previewed in ‘The Satanic Singles Series’, which released its first of four parts on November 6, 2020, featuring “Funeral For A Friend” b/w “Also Sprach Zarathustra”. Three more singles were released in December, January, and February, leading up to the full-length ‘Cloud Covered’ album, which has two additional tunes not released in the Series.

‘Cloud Covered’ Tracklist:

“Funeral For A Friend” (Elton John)
“Behind The Wall Of Sleep” (Black Sabbath)
“If You Doom Me Now” (Chicago)
“Blew” (Nirvana)
“Sleeping On The Roof” (Flaming Lips)
“Also Sprach Zarathustra” (2001)
“Not Fragile” / “Free Wheelin'” (Bachman Turner Overdrive)
“Cecilia Ann / Rock Music” (Pixies)
“Auf Wiedersehen” (Cheap Trick)
“In The Flesh?” / “One Of These Days” (Pink Floyd)

Without a doubt, these covers are heavier than the originals, but not necessarily doomier. After six full-length albums (including a double) of original instrumental doom, ‘Cloud Covered’ is a way for the band to change up the pace both for themselves and their supporters. Still fully instrumental but with songs well under the 20-minute mark, these songs make for a somewhat different CLOUDS TASTE SATANIC listening experience.

The songs included in ‘Cloud Covered’ were engineered and mixed by Ben Rice at Degraw Sound in Brooklyn and mastered by Alan Douches (High On Fire, Converge, Mastodon) at West West Side Music. The ‘Cloud Covered’ artwork is original pieces done by Alexandre Goulet, whose graphic design work has graced numerous metal records including every album by Dopethrone. Be Heavy or Be Doomed…

‘Cloud Covered’ will be available in Vinyl, CD, and Digital formats, with release set for March 19, 2021.

The Obelisk Show on Gimme Radio Playlist: Episode 24

Posted in Radio on November 8th, 2019 by JJ Koczan

the obelisk show banner

It’s been forever since there was an episode of The Obelisk Show on Gimme Radio, but I’m glad to say that there was never any chance of it not continuing eventually. At least not one that I was told about — ha. Gimme had a bunch of specials booked, and well, if it’s me or the dude from Enslaved, or really anybody, I can’t really put up much of a fight that I should be given preference. I’m the dude who plays heavy rock on a metal station, and I’ve got a pretty good timeslot to do it. Yeah, I’m gonna get picked off in favor of special episodes. No worries. I kind of needed a break anyway.

So maybe think of this as the start of Season 2 of The Obelisk Show. I know that all the The Next Generation-era Star Trek shows operated with 24-episode seasons, but I don’t think anyone will begrudge me one fewer. Enterprise might’ve had a 23-episode season somewhere in there. I’d have to check. Either way, Season 2 picks up pretty much where Season 1 left off: a butt-load of new music and me nerding out about Colour Haze.

I talk a bit about the Høstsabbat fest in Norway that I went to last month, give the Brume record a plug and am a total geek for Al Cisneros’ bass tone on that new Om live release, so yes, pretty much the show is getting caught up with what’s been going on around here while it was off the air. A bit of shaking off the rust, but the playlist rules and I tried not to screw it all up too badly on mic. I haven’t heard the finished product yet, so we’ll see if it was a success. In any case, I hope you dig it.

The Obelisk Show on Gimme Radio airs at 1PM Eastern today.

Clouds Taste Satanic Post “Second Sight (The Seer)” Video; Album out Tomorrow

Posted in Bootleg Theater on October 30th, 2019 by JJ Koczan

all that much.clouds taste satanic

Yeah, I’ll readily admit that I’ve largely slept on the progression of Brooklyn instrumental heavymakers Clouds Taste Satanic. No one’s fault but my own. Of course, I’ve seen their name bandied about the New York-region doomosphere for years, but the last time I actively wrote about them was 2015, and frankly, I didn’t write all that much. My loss? As usual, most definitely. The double-guitar four-piece played Maryland Doom Fest this year and made a splash — it was the venue I couldn’t get into because of a lost (misplaced, not DUI or anything) drivers license — to the point that people seemed genuinely excited about them, and I don’t think I’ve ever casually perused a record of theirs without being like, “Yeah, this is cool,” before going about my business. clouds taste satanic second sightWell, Second Sight is their sixth album overall and their second of 2019 behind April’s Evil Eye, and it’s out tomorrow to finish out the complementary Walpurgis and Halloween releases — spooky times indeed — and it brings together two extended, side-consuming tracks each broken into multiple parts that stand on their own almost as individual collections of ideas.

“Second Sight (The Seer)” is the new video, and with its righteous solo and driving Northeastern aggro groove beneath, it definitely makes an impression, but really it’s just the first stage of a larger movement. Positioned on side A — which itself is called ‘Lesser Magic’ — “Second Sight” (21:20) breaks down into ‘The Seer (Vision),’ ‘The Psychic (Mist),’ and ‘The Pythia (Blood)’ while side ‘Greater Magic’ is consumed by “Black Mass” (21:06), which in turn divides into ‘The Goat (Dawn),’ ‘The Demon (Star),’ and ‘The Devil (Templar),’ thereby ensuring that even though there aren’t lyrics or vocals to dig into, the proceedings are well complicated enough to keep listeners occupied until a follow-up seventh LP happens along. Bullet points and outline structure notwithstanding, what Clouds Taste Satanic do over the course of these pieces is bring together a progressive take on heavy riffing that’s both of doom and willing to look outside it when called for. Past its halfway point, “Second Sight” turns to a swaggering bluesy swing for just a moment and the resulting impression is that not only are there multiple parties contributing to the songs — something I don’t know for sure, so don’t quote me on it — but that their interest lies in building a sonic complexity to match that of their structural presentation.

Do they get there? Yeah, I think they do. It’s subtle, but as “Second Sight” shifts into what would seem to be its final movement with a sleeker, bass-led section of brooding, the build that ensues is both effective and accounting for the piece as an entirety as well as its own movement. The payoff, in other clouds taste satanic second sight tracklistwords, more than justifies the journey to it, and as “Black Mass” crashes in to start the second leg of Second Sight, the momentum has hardly subsided, carrying through a patient unfolding toward some classic stonerly fuzz-wah lead work and plays back and forth in tempo and roll as (perhaps) ‘The Demon (Star)’ takes hold amid more driving fare in the middle third of the track, eventually giving way to long crashes and dueling leads, post-Sabbath starts and stops and a long fadeout that has a due dirge vibe given the progression still underway. At two songs/42 minutes, it’s not a minor undertaking, but it’s clearly not supposed to be, and Clouds Taste Satanic live up to the weighty goals they’ve set for themselves, practically in terms of making two records in a year and creatively in terms of crafting something forward-thinking at the same time as it is heavy, doomed and all that other vibed-out stuff that essentially means “heavy” and “doomed.”

So yes, it’s to my regret that it took me this long to really dig into what Clouds Taste Satanic were up to. Better late than never, I guess? Despite the urgency created by Pokemon to do so, you can’t really ever catch them all, and I do the best I can. Bottom line is this is a cool record and I gave myself another reason to feel like a yutz today, so that’s one box ticked for my morning. Time to chase down some older records, I suppose.

They play a release show tomorrow in Brooklyn and the lineup is awesome, Eternal Black and a bunch of others. More info on thee social medias here.

Enjoy the video:

Guitarist Steve Scavuzzo states:

“Despite the mystical mellowness the name implies, Second Sight is actually the most aggressive Clouds Taste Satanic record to date. Not sure when that happened, but at some point the doom turned angry.”

CLOUDS TASTE SATANIC formed in Brooklyn, New York in 2013. These Post-Doom Instrumentalists have steadily built a reputation as one of the few truly great DIY riff-heavy underground bands playing today. Patiently and deliberately developing a unique sound that melds riff-dominated Stoner Rock with Heavy Doom, their live show is a multi-sensory atmospheric display, offering a true experience and companion to their albums.

In 2014, the band released their debut album, ‘To Sleep Beyond the Earth’. The debut, along with second album ‘Your Doom Has Come’ (2015), third album ‘Dawn of the Satanic Age’ (2016), fourth full-length ‘The Glitter of Infinite Hell’ (2017), and their most recent ‘Evil Eye’ (2019) all demonstrate the band has no intentions of slowing down. The band celebrated its fifth year anniversary in 2018 by releasing ‘In Search of Heavy’, a four CD Box Set.

In 2019, the band has retained solid footing without falter, soon to achieve a bold goal of releasing two albums in one year. ‘Evil Eye’ came out April 30th (Walpurgis Eve), and we now await ‘Second Sight’ on October 31st (Halloween).

Clouds Taste Satanic Announce Your Doom Has Come for Sept. Release

Posted in Whathaveyou on June 30th, 2015 by JJ Koczan

Brooklyn doomers Clouds Taste Satanic will release their second album, Your Doom Has Come, on Sept. 1. The record follows the band’s 2014 debut, To Sleep Beyond the Earth, which was formatted as a single piece, and is broken down into separate tracks, though the first three of them — as you can see in the tracklisting — are also meant to be taken as a whole.

The instrumental double-guitar four-piece has made the last installment of that three-parter, “Beast from the Sea” available to check out in a new video, and you can find that under the album announcement below, snagged off the PR wire:

clouds taste satanic your doom has come

CLOUDS TASTE SATANIC Instrumental Doom Quartet to Release Sophomore Full-Length Sept. 1st

Brooklyn-based instrumental doom quartet CLOUDS TASTE SATANIC will release their highly anticipated sophomore full-length on September 1st. Titled Your Doom Has Come, the six-track follow-up to 2014’s critically-heralded To Sleep Beyond The Earth full-length was engineered and mixed by Nadim Issa at Let Em’ In Studios in Brooklyn and mastered by Alan Douches (High On Fire, Mastodon) at West West Side Music.

Thematically, Your Doom Has Come traces its inspiration to the darkest corners of the Book of Revelation. Sonically, Your Doom Has Come finds the band at their fastest and most aggressive. While To Sleep Beyond The Earth took a more Dopesmoker approach (with one forty minute plus song spread over 2 sides of vinyl), Your Doom Has Come takes a more De Vermis Mysteriis approach, compressing its conceptual storytelling into six minute plus songs of riff-filled Armageddon. While all of Side A is joined together thematically to form the title song, the individual pieces work just as well on their own.

CLOUDS TASTE SATANIC formed in Brooklyn, New York in 2013 and have spent the past two years building a reputation as one of the finest underground doom bands playing today. They’ve patiently and deliberately developed a unique sound that melds riff dominated stoner rock with heavy doom. With their live show, they work to create a multi-media mood that offers a true experience and companion piece to their albums. CLOUDS TASTE SATANIC’s debut album, To Sleep Beyond The Earth was released in 2014.

II. One Third of The Sun
III. Beast From The Sea
