audiObelisk: Second Batch of Roadburn 2011 Streams Posted Online

Posted in audiObelisk on May 13th, 2011 by JJ Koczan

Unfortunately, you can’t actually hear the moment when the mythical beast Sasquatch joined psychedelic rockers Dead Meadow on stage, but rest assured, their set was nonetheless a highlight of this year’s Roadburn festival. Along with performances by Corrosion of Conformity, Weedeater, Count Raven, Today is the Day and others, it’s just been posted in the second batch (first is here in case you missed it) of audio streams. You’ll find the links to the listening pages below. Please enjoy:

audiObelisk: First Batch of Roadburn 2011 Streams Posted Online

Posted in audiObelisk on May 4th, 2011 by JJ Koczan

Whether you were there or not, part of the Roadburn experience each year is reliving it (and hearing the bands you didn’t get to see) with the flood of live audio streams that always emerge after the festival is over. As with last year, the fest was kind enough to grant me permission to host the links to the streams where you can listen, so here’s the first bunch. Some killer sets here from Acid King, Naam, Stone Axe (I’d recommend starting there), Evoken, Hooded Menace et al. Hope you like it heavy.

Frydee Ghost

Posted in Bootleg Theater on April 29th, 2011 by JJ Koczan

World traveler that I am (ha.), I’m in Maryland for the weekend, and while I hope to do some record shopping before I leave — it’s a maybe at this point — far more pressing in my head at the moment is the fact that I left the leather carry-case with all my clean clothes and toiletries back in Jersey, meaning I have nothing but the brown khakis and the Saint Vitus shirt on my back to last me through till at least Sunday afternoon. Not a crisis, but I’d be remiss if I didn’t note how incredibly stupid I felt as The Patient Mrs. left the hotel room a bit ago to go replenish our stock of toothpaste, deodorant, etc.

Tomorrow, it’s off to the fat-guy-clothes store. One can only hope they sell Black Sabbath t-shirts. This is me, not holding my breath.

A cool note for the curious: You might recall last year when I interviewed Greg Anderson about the Goatsnake reunion amongst other things. Well, Japanese blogger Keisuke Iwaya of waya-waya.cocolog-nifty.com just yesterday posted a Japanese translation of that interview, and though I’m completely ignorant of the beautiful Japanese language as I am of so many other things in this world, I think it’s fucking awesome anyway, so please check it out if you get the chance.

We end this week with Drunken Monkey‘s footage of Ghost from Roadburn. They’re playing NYC in early June, and I’m looking forward to that, but it was cool to catch them in Tilburg as well, as you’ll see in the clip above. Several of the songs from their Opus Eponymous debut have been in heavy rotation both in the mental jukebox and the actual CD player of late, so I figured it was a good way to go. I wonder if anyone has told them yet that the backing band behind Evil Pope Guy has the same stage costumes as Goblin Cock. Sometimes life is fun.

Next week I’ll have a fucking awesome interview I did yesterday with Justin Broadrick about Jesu‘s new album and the apparently ongoing Godflesh reunion, as well as the numbers for April (not as dismal as I thought) and reviews of new albums by Virginian progressive space rockers Corsair and Indianapolis trad-doom frontrunners The Gates of Slumber, among others. I don’t know how, but there always seems to be something killer on the horizon, so although I say it more than Yankees radio announcer John “Pure Radio Gold” Sterling says that you can’t predict baseball, stay tuned, because there’s good stuff to come.

Ufomammut to Play all of Eve at Roadburn

Posted in Whathaveyou on January 12th, 2011 by JJ Koczan

In the wake of YOB‘s unfortunate cancellation, Roadburn has announced that Italian drone metal gods Ufomammut will be appearing at this year’s edition of the festival, playing the whole of last year’s brilliant Eve album. This is, as if I needed to say it, very good news. Eve was chosen by Roadburn-website patrons as the album of 2010 (who could argue?), so it’s all the more appropriate.

Here’s this from the Roadburn site:

Roadburn is thrilled to announce that Italy’s psychedelic drone lords, Ufomammut, will perform their much acclaimed 2010 album, Eve, in its entirety at this year’s Roadburn Festival, Saturday, April 16 at the Midi Theatre in Tilburg, Holland.

Ufomammut commented: “Since our Eve album was voted best of 2010 by Roadburn readers, playing it at the upcoming festival will have a very special meaning for Ufomammut! It’ll be our chance to properly say thanks to all the people who have supported us throughout the years. See you in April!”

Pro-Shot Live Footage of YOB at Roadburn

Posted in Bootleg Theater on January 5th, 2011 by JJ Koczan

Sometimes you just don’t need a clever headline. Walter from Roadburn was kind enough to send me the embed information for this pro-shot video of YOB‘s first European performance at the 2010 Roadburn fest in The Netherlands, with video by Lee Sakura and audio mixed by Marcel van de Vondervoort of Astrosoniq.

Say goodbye to the next hour of your life and hello to awesome:

As always, thanks to Walter and Roadburn. The video was originally posted on the festival’s site, which you can check out here.

Animosity Lineup of C.O.C. Added to SunnO)))burn

Posted in Whathaveyou on November 26th, 2010 by JJ Koczan

Probably should have seen this one coming, since the Animosity lineup also played the Southern Lord fest out in California earlier this year, but the confirmation that this legendary incarnation of Corrosion of Conformity will be at Roadburn 2011 is welcome news nonetheless. Here it is, straight from the Roadburn site:

The reunited classic Animosity lineup of Corrosion of ConformityMike Dean (bass, vocals), Woody Weatherman (guitar) and Reed Mullin (drums) — has been confirmed for SunnO)))‘s curated event at Roadburn 2011, set for April 15 at the 013 venue in Tilburg, Holland.

Also appearing on the bill are Winter, Earth, ScornBeaver, Hooded Menace, Menace Ruine, Aluk Todolo, The Secret, Atilla Csihar’s Void ov Voices and SunnO))).

As curator, SunnO))) (Greg Anderson and Stephen O’Malley) are personally selecting the bands that will play during their special event, as well as performing a headlining show. SunnO))) is Roadburn’s fourth curator, following David Tibet in 2008, Neurosis in 2009 and Triptykon’s Tom Gabriel Warrior at this year’s festival in April.

SunnO)))burn: First Bands Announced

Posted in Whathaveyou on November 18th, 2010 by JJ Koczan

You know what I think is cool about the list of bands announced today for SunnO)))‘s curated event at Roadburn 2011? Yeah, it’s got the Southern Lord stuff like The Secret, Earth and Attila Csihar, and I think we all saw that coming, and a couple other cool acts, but then there’s Beaver. That’s right, Beaver.

Once Josh Homme‘s purported favorite band, they’re the little-known Dutch stoner outfit who got the shaft in 2001 when Man’s Ruin folded after releasing their album, Mobile and haven’t put out a record since. They’re playing. I can’t wait to see them. I’ll bet you anything in the world they fucking kill it.

Here’s the news off the Roadburn site, which if you’re not checking regularly for updates, you should be, as there are more bands being unveiled every day:

Legendary doom pioneers Winter, along with Earth, Scorn, Beaver, Aluk Todolo, Menace Ruine, Hooded Menace, The Secret and Atilla Csihar’s Void ov Voices, have been confirmed for SunnO)))‘s curated event at Roadburn Festival 2011, set for April 15 at the 013 venue in Tilburg, Holland.

SunnO))) comments: “SunnO))) is honored to present the first part of our guests for the curated day at Roadburn, April 15, 2011. They represent a broad range of bands we are fans of, and in many cases some of our closest friends and collaborators. We hope you appreciate the selection, and look forward to announcing more of our selection and allies…”
