Roadburn 2012 Announces d.USK Appearance

Posted in Whathaveyou on September 13th, 2011 by JJ Koczan

The 1993 full-length from Australian death/doomers diSEMBOWELMENT, Transcendence into the Peripheral, is considered one of the high points of the genre and then some. Fitting then, that the semi-reactivated lineup of d.USK have been invited to perform the album in its entirety at Roadburn 2012. One more thing to look forward to in a stellar lineup that already includes Sleep and Voivod twice over.

News came down via Roadburn‘s site:

Roadburn is honored and proud to welcome for their first ever European performance, d.USK, the final embodiment of diSEMBOWELMENT, whom will play an exclusive set of diSEMBOWELMENT’s legendary funeral doom opus, Transcendence into the Peripheral.

Commented guitarist Matthew Skarajew, “We feel that presenting Transcendence into the Peripheral in its entirety is a very unique opportunity and that Roadburn will be the perfect vehicle to realize it. I expect it will be the one and only time that it will ever happen!”

Says drummer Paul Mazziotta, “Although we cannot give the fans 100 percent of the original lineup, Matt and I have put together a band we are very proud of, and is committed to delivering the classic material with pure integrity, energy, passion.”

Timeless, classic, and immeasurably influential, Transcendence into the Peripheral remains a groundbreaking work that typifies the Roadburn Festival’s love of the powerful and ambitious. d.USK is pleased to present this celebrated body of work to Roadburn’s mainstage on Thursday, 12 April, 2012 at the 013 venue, Tilburg, Holland.

Roadburn Festival 2012, including Sleep and Voivod‘s special event, will run for four days from Thursday, April 12 to Sunday, April 15 (the traditional Afterburner) at the 013 venue in Tilburg, Holland.

Pre-sales will start Saturday, November 26, 2011.

Sleep to Headline Roadburn 2012

Posted in Whathaveyou on September 6th, 2011 by JJ Koczan

With a subject like that, I don’t even need to post any news, but here it is anyway: Sleep will headline the 2012 Roadburn festival. Life doesn’t get much better, but I’ll save my ranting for later. Om are reportedly playing too (full on Cisernos fix!), and hopefully they’ll have a new album out by then. Here’s the news from Roadburn‘s site:

Roadburn headquarters are in a euphoric state as we report that West Coast stoner metal legends Sleep have been confirmed as the headliner at Roadburn Festival 2012. Sleep are irrefutably a seminal band of the stoner rock scene and to our elation they are coming to their spiritual home of Roadburn to anchor the 2012 festival.

Featuring original members Al Cisneros and Matt Pike together with drummer Jason Roeder of Neurosis, Sleep will be playing (a one-off show) on Saturday, 14 April 2012Al Cisneros will also be appearing with OM together with Emil Amos and Robert A.A. Lowe, bringing their hypnotic vibrations to Roadburn‘s mainstage on Thursday12 April.

We at the Roadburn Festival consider Sleep to be among the most important bands influencing today’s thriving stoner/sludge/metal scene. Their vision to combine the powerful riffs of Black Sabbath with the outsider ethics of punk rock turned into an unstoppable amalgamation, one that catapulted them to international attention within a very short time. Their rapid rise and unquestionable musical significance is a testimony to the fact that they tapped into something that resonates inside virtually every fan of stoner metal today. They truly embody the spirit and power of The Riff.

Voivod to Curate Roadburn 2012

Posted in Whathaveyou on August 23rd, 2011 by JJ Koczan

This is unexpected and fascinating news. Canadian progressive metal LEGENDS Voivod have been selected to curate the 2012 installment of the Roadburn festival in Tilburg, The Netherlands. I think it’ll be really interesting to see who they select over the next couple months, and either way, with the chance to see them perform not one, but two times over the course of the 2012 fest, it’s automatically worth the trip. If you haven’t yet, no time like today to book that flight.

Here’s the news, direct from Roadburn‘s site:

Roadburn is elated to announce the curator for the 17th edition of the festival: Voivod. After the band’s widely acclaimed and artistically inspiring performances at the 2011 festival, Voivod has agreed to curate our festival on Friday, April 13, 2012.

As curator, Voivod will personally select the bands that will play during their special event at Roadburn and perform a special headline show. We had a revelation this year: namely, that Voivod and Roadburn are not only kindred spirits musically and artistically, but also on the same wavelength in other ways, too. Voivod personifies the laidback Roadburn vibe.

Respected by fans and bands that span the festival’s sonic spectrum, Voivod is the ideal pick as Roadburn’s fifth curator. The band will carry on a tradition that began in 2008 with David Tibet, followed by Neurosis in 2009, Triptykon’s Tom Gabriel Warrior in 2010 and SunnO))) at this year’s festival. After Voivod agreed to curate the Friday, we could not resist asking them to stay for a second show. It’s on! The band will appear on Saturday, April 14, 2012, too.

Away comments: “We are truly honored to curate the Roadburn Voivod day on April 13, 2012. We will make sure that the whole spectrum of experimental music influential to Voivod is represented. Thanks to the Roadburn folks for inviting us, we’re already counting the days in anticipation of the event!!”

We are truly looking forward to the new ideas and visions that Voivod will bring to the festival next year. If asked to sum up Roadburn in one word, “progressive” would be a fitting choice. Evolution is a big part of this. The festival is a tribute to the open-mindedness of its bands, curators and audience. The joy comes from expanding musical horizons and looking at familiar territory from new angles. We will definitely be in for some artistic surprises with the always-intrepid Voivod as our curator. We are excited to find out what they have in store for us!

Roadburn Festival 2012, including Voivod’s special event, will run for four days from Thursday, April 12 to Sunday, April 15 (the traditional Afterburner) at the 013 venue in Tilburg, Holland. Pre-sales will start Saturday, Nov. 26, 2011.

audiObelisk: Seventh Batch of Roadburn 2011 Streams Posted (Black Math Horseman, Beaver and More)

Posted in audiObelisk on July 20th, 2011 by JJ Koczan

The march continues! I guess that’s what happens when you have something like 35,000 bands playing on three stages over the course of four days — you come out of it with a motherload of audio. This time around, new sets surface from Black Math Horseman, Aluk Todolo, Incredible Hog and Dutch natives Beaver, who were actually the only one of these four that I saw at the fest. Plenty to dig into, as always. Here are the links:

Posted in audiObelisk on July 1st, 2011 by JJ Koczan

The sixth handful of audio captures from this year’s Roadburn festival might be the most eclectic yet. Sure, past installments had the likes of Black Pyramid or Spindrift, but how many times in your life are you going to see Wovenhand next to Voivod?

That’s all part of the experience of the fest, and as always, it’s presented gorgeously on these streams by Marcel van de Vondervoort and his team at Spacejam. Dig it:

Not to steal thunder from this month’s just-posted podcast, but it just wouldn’t be a series if you missed an episode. Accordingly, here is the next batch of streams recorded live at this year’s Roadburn festival at the 013 Popcentrum in Tilburg, The Netherlands. Some cool stuff here from Voivod, Soilent Green, Blood Farmers and Black Mountain and a couple I didn’t get to see from The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble and Jesse Sykes, plus Quest for Fire, who packed out the Bat Cave, a second set from Dragontears (if you missed the first, it’s here), and a few more, so there’s lots to check out.

audiObelisk: Fourth Batch of Roadburn 2011 Streams Posted (Features Ufomammut, Black Pyramid and More)

Posted in audiObelisk on May 27th, 2011 by JJ Koczan

As ever, I thank Walter and the Roadburn crew for their generosity in allowing me to host the links to the official streams from Roadburn 2011. As we Americans get ready to celebrate Memorial Day, I can think of few better complements for a barbecue than The Machine‘s Hendrixian take on heavy jamming, or, as the evening wears on, drinks are imbibed and fists are raised in triumph, Black Pyramid‘s doomy gallop. And, of course, just in case the universe comes to a crashing end (as my work email account just did), there’s Ufomammut playing Eve in its entirety for sonic complement. You can’t ask for more than that. From life. But there’s more anyway, so enjoy the aural hubris:

These and all Roadburn audio streams were recorded by the vigilant Spacejam team headed by Marcel van de Vondervoort (also of ass-kicking rockers Astrosoniq), so if you see him, please say thanks for all the hard work. Roadburn 2011 took place April 14-17 at the 013 Popcentrum in Tilburg, The Netherlands. If you’d like to read more than you could ever possibly want to read about it, click here.

Posted in audiObelisk on May 19th, 2011 by JJ Koczan

The third batch of audio streams from Roadburn 2011 might be the best one yet. I don’t think I’ve stopped raving about how good Ramesses (above) and Sungrazer were since I got back from the fest, and with the chance to hear some bands I missed over there — my head hangs in New Jerseyan shame for not catching The Atomic Bitchwax — it’s good to at least hear what I didn’t see. You know the drill by now — here are the links:
