Wicked Trip Release Cabin Fever Tape

Posted in Whathaveyou on February 12th, 2024 by JJ Koczan

Tennessee-based acid scuzz rockers Wicked Trip‘s second full-length, Cabin Fever (review here), has been issued on tape through Saturn Eye Records. I don’t know about you, but I think that works. They put it out on CD too, which is always great, don’t get me wrong, though especially for something that’s so raw and that rawness becomes part of the aesthetic, something that doesn’t feel like it was made for everybody, I think the format works especially well. Maybe it’s compression, maybe it’s placebo; I won’t claim to know and it doesn’t really matter. But I always feel like I need to justify posting about something coming out on tape as news, when no, I almost certainly don’t.

There’s vinyl coming in April through DHU Records, if that’s your format preference — no judgment either way; life is short and difficult, love what you love — and there are still both CDs and of course an infinite supply of .zip files in various bitrates and digital compressions, so Wicked Trip have you covered in any case. Saturn Eye sent the following down the PR wire:

wicked trip cabin fever

LABEL ANNOUNCEMENT (SE-012) —
Now on cassette is the paranoia-inducing doom opus CABIN FEVER, from Tennessee burnouts @thewickedtrip. This album was digitally released last October but hasn’t seen a physical edition until now.

CABIN FEVER is a 46 minute long acid-fried journey of soul crushing psychosis-riffing and sampling. Listeners be advised – your mental state may be adversely affected… But if you follow this label then you’re probably already fried. So grab a cassette and do a little more damage!

Sign of the Sorcerer Release Vinyl Edition of Obsessions of the Vile

Posted in Whathaveyou on October 17th, 2023 by JJ Koczan

After seeing release on cassette earlier this year through Saturn Eye Records, the debut album from Tennessee cult doom rockers Sign of the SorcererObsessions of the Vile, has now been given a vinyl issue through Saturn Eye with distribution in Europe through Kozmik Artifactz. Is that news? I think once you click play on “Necropsychodelia” and hear the kind of tone we’re talking about. The PR wire gives it a three-‘f’ alliteration — “fuzzy, filthy and fried” — and with its post-Electric Wizard draw both vocally and in terms of the overarching groove, Sign of the Sorcerer dig into weedian worship with markedly ill intention and, well, if these songs aren’t about killing women, and they don’t seem to be though I haven’t found lyrics, I’m on board.

I’d say follow the bouncing ball on this one, but listening, it’s really more like ‘nod along to the rolling boulder.’ In any case, consider yourself invited to have at it. Stonedest thing you’ll hear today, in all likelihood:

SIGN OF THE SORCERER – Obsessions of the Vile LP

Now on vinyl: ‘Obsessions Of The Vile’ from @sign.of.the.sorcerer is back for more blood. We never announced this format after releasing on cassette back in March, but know some of ya have been waiting patiently even still… well the wait is finally over!

These ship immediately from shop.saturneyerecords.com

Oh and to celebrate both this release and our favorite time of year (and since we’re literally running out of storage room) everything in the online shop is discounted.

Huge thanks to Kozmik Artifactz for their guidance and distribution. If you’re in Europe, getting your ‘Vile’ fix just got a lot cheaper…

Other PR from Kozmik Artifactz:

Sign Of The Sorcerer’s debut full length album is finally here for the first time on wax! Nobody thought it was possible, but ‘Obsessions Of The Vile’ sounds even more fuzzy, filthy, and absolutely fried on this format.

Saturn Eye Records is thrilled to ruin your trips with their latest… vinyl release!

Asimov and the Hidden Circus Release Flowers Tape

Posted in Whathaveyou on May 23rd, 2023 by JJ Koczan

asimov and the hidden circus

Putting this here in part as a note to myself. Asimov and the Hidden Circus released their album Flowers in June 2020, and while the fact that it’s three years later invariably makes the Saturn Eye Records cassette (K7) edition out now a reissue, it’s also the first physical pressing the full-length has received, so again we see old paradigms and definitions not really fitting what’s happening now. But the songs are interesting, and I hear a sonic point of view in the material that has depth as well as space in atmospheric terms, so while I’ve skimmed through, this is basically me making a note to myself to dig in further. Will that happen this week, month, year? I would say part of what makes life exciting is not knowing, but really it just makes life overwhelming, frenetic and depressing.

Still, the music’s good, and one hangs a hat on that when possible. Also, I like tapes. They’re never gonna be as cool as LPs, even ironically, but they continue to fill a gap between CDs and vinyl and if you’re wondering why they’re still pressed, the answer is that sometimes somebody will see something about a tape release and think, hey gee, maybe I should check that out, and then share that with a friend or two of their own, which is exactly what has happened here if you’re reading this sentence.

To wit:

New Release SE-008: May has finally brought us ‘Flowers’ on tape from Asimov And The Hidden Circus. This is a very special reissue for Saturn Eye Records and has been in the making for several months now.

Asimov’s unique blend of hypnotic, far out sounds have a way of breaking through barriers of negativity and bringing one to head-nodding peace. You will groove – you will smile. It’s therapeutic psychedelic music in its heaviest form, and we are absolutely thrilled to share it with you on this new format.

These tapes are in a limited edition of 100 copies (an undisclosed amount will be available direct from @asimovstenarmusik in August). Available now from shop.saturneyerecords.com.

Recorded at the height of the Covid 19 pandemic. Original vinyl release was June 1st, 2020. New tape released May 12th, 2023.

Sign of the Sorcerer Release Obsessions of the Vile on Saturn Eye Records

Posted in Whathaveyou on March 17th, 2023 by JJ Koczan

sign of the sorcerer

In these times of heavy music market saturation, a band looking to stand out from the crowd has to employ any and all methods for doing so possible. It ain’t easy. But even something small, like putting emojis around the song titles of your record on Bandcamp, can catch the eye. I hadn’t seen that before I encountered Sign of the Sorcerer‘s 2021 debut full-length, Obsessions of the Vile — and to be honest, I’m a little surprised in hindsight — and granted it does nothing to enhance the listening experience of the Tennessee band’s ultra-dug-in malevolent wizard doom/sludge, but it grabbed my attention just the same, and for bands that can be half the battle. Not advocating everyone do the same or anything, but creative presentation can help if you’re looking to engage an audience.

Said the guy who’s had the same blog theme since 2009.

Alas, Obsessions of the Vile is being re-released today through Saturn Eye Records, and such is the occasion for my admittedly delayed encounter with it. I’m sure you’ve heard it since you’re all up on your doom and I’m lagging behind as ever, but there you go. Thanks for indulging my lag.

From the PR wire:

sign of the sorcerer obsessions of the vile

Saturn Eye Records is thrilled to ruin your trips with their latest…

Sign Of The Sorcerer’s first full length album has finally received a long overdue physical edition. ‘Obsessions Of The Vile’ is a drugged out and downright sleazy set of recordings just oozing with fuzz and filth. The album was recorded in Johnson City, Tennessee and was originally digitally released in late 2021. Well the band and label devised a wickedly foul deal, had it notarized by Satan, and now here we are with SE-007. Saturn Eye has a limited amount of these tapes available in their shop right this second. The rest will be available from the band at upcoming shows, the next of which is April 1st in Knoxville, TN. Grab a ‘Vile’ dose while you can and let it eat you alive…
