Bongzilla Announce Dabbing (LIVE) Rosin in Europe Out March 15

Posted in Whathaveyou on January 17th, 2024 by JJ Koczan

Like, how stoned do you really think Bongzilla can get at this point? Don’t get me wrong — I know they’re willing to work at it — but after so many years of THC ingestion, be it smoking or edibles or vaping or dabbing or whathaveyou, how does your body still process the weed? Or do Bongzilla just have a line to some kind of magic Wisconsin super-herb that does the trick regardless? Maybe it’s not even about getting high anymore so much as evening out, like they just operate at a higher altitude generally. I don’t know about you, but “Bongzilla talks about weed” sounds like a great interview headline to me. I mean, how many milligrams do you estimate is floating around in their bloodstream at any given time? What’s the over/under?

I don’t think I’ve ever dabbed, but if it’s got Bongzilla‘s endorsement then it can’t be all bad. You’ll recall Heavy Psych Sounds had a few quality live records out in a bunch in 2023, from The Atomic Bitchwax, Duel, Ecstatic Vision, so maybe this is continuing the thread there. If you’re trying to put bodies in venues, reminding listeners how much they love live music while also giving your bands something else to sell on the merch table isn’t the worst way to go.

In any case, the more Bongzilla, the merrier. Bongzilla have a previously-announced Spring return to Europe set to start on April 26 at the Maximum Festival in Italy as they continue to support 2023’s Dab City (review here), which was duly bombed out and as crusty as fried cheese curds. So yes, awesome.

Here’s the news and those dates:

The Cosmic Dead Sign to Heavy Psych Sounds

Posted in Whathaveyou on January 16th, 2024 by JJ Koczan

After releasing the expansive-of-title-and-sound split LP The Intergalactic Connection – Exploring The Sideral Remote Hyperspace (review here) in 2021 through Heavy Psych Sounds and partnering for that release with their now-labelmates in Italy’s Giöbia, Glasgow heavy psych explorers The Cosmic Dead have made it official with the same label for their next full-length. And I know there’s been a lot happening in space rock the last couple years with your King Gizzards and your Slifts and Pigsx7, etc., but it’s been a half-decade since The Cosmic Dead released their last LP, 2019’s Scottish Space Race (review here), so you might need a refresher on just how righteous their interstellar slop actually is. All good. I’m sure by the time the record shows up — April? late March? — the hype will have us all up to date.

The PR wire hurled this in the direction of my eyeballs a bit ago, and it seemed fitting to share. True to established methodology, Heavy Psych Sounds next week will follow this announcement with the album details and first single:

the cosmic dead

Heavy Psych Sounds to announce THE COSMIC DEAD signing for their upcoming new album !!!

We’re incredibly stoked to announce that the Glasgow space rock band THE COSMIC DEAD is coming back with a brand new album !!!

NEW ALBUM PRESALE + FIRST TRACK PREMIERE
January 24th

BIOGRAPHY

The Cosmic Dead are an amorphous blob of space rock energy hailing from Glasgow, Scotland. Their exploratory compositions often reach levels of sonic destruction through reflective repetition and visceral harmony.

The band has taken many forms since forming in 2010 and has been declared ‘The loudest psychedelic rock band on the planet.” by legendary compere Kozmik Ken. At the base of the current sonic obliteration team is a rhythm section of Tommy Duffin and Omar Aborida, a thunderous and cohesive unit which is then further propelled into the outer realms by Luigi Pasquini providing frantic italo synthesized electronics along with Calum Calderwood’s mind bending, sky-shattering fiddle acrobatics.

Love Gang Announce Spring European Tour

Posted in Whathaveyou on January 15th, 2024 by JJ Koczan

LOVE GANG (Photo by tiagochediakphoto)

Colorado classic heavy rockers Love Gang are set to head back to Europe this Spring as they continue to support their early-2023 album Meanstreak (review here). That record was issued by Heavy Psych Sounds, who also brought the band over to Europe last summer for a round of dates in July and August. They’d put domestic live action between, coming to the Eastern Seaboard this Fall and keeping momentum on their side as they continued to explore and cover new territories, seeming to dig in their heels for a longer stretch of road time. That is, I think they’re going to be a touring band — you might say they already are, what with all the touring — so expect more of this kind of thing as they move forward and become more established over the next few years.

I typed out these dates from the poster, so if they’re written wrong compared to that poster, the poster is correct. Look, I do my best, but I wake up very early and the AI that can type out tour dates with the proper accents hasn’t been made yet, apparently, though I do hope someone will let me know when such a thing comes along.

Dates were posted on the ol’ timey social media that my mother keeps needing new debit cards because she clicks ads on, and here they are. Festivals in those open slots? Certainly possible:

Acid Mammoth to Release Supersonic Megafauna Collision April 5; Video Posted

Posted in Whathaveyou on January 11th, 2024 by JJ Koczan

To advance the newly-announced April 5 release of their awaited fourth album, Supersonic Megafauna Collision, Greek doom rollers Acid Mammoth have chosen to unveil the title-track. In its six and a half minutes you will find pure, unadulterated love and worship of riff. It bleeds through the tones of father/son guitar duo Chris Babalis Jr. (also vocals; I met him at SonicBlast and he was super-nice; wish I had seen the band) and Chris Babalis Sr., who are joined in their oft-grim processions by bassist Dimosthenis Varikos and drummer Marios Louvaris, and, well, it doesn’t seem like a coincidence that the track (and album) ended up titled after the concept of large, probably-prehistoric animals smashing into each other at high speeds. Also it’s catchy.

Heavy Psych Sounds has the release and the PR wire has preorder links and more info below. I’ll hope to have more to come before Supersonic Megafauna Collision comes out, but here’s what’s up:

acid mammoth supersonic megafauna collision

*** ACID MAMMOTH – Supersonic Megafauna Collision ***

– brand new album of the greek heavy doom wizards –

Athens doom metal pillars ACID MAMMOTH return this spring with their anticipated fourth album “Supersonic Megafauna Collision”, to be released on April 5th through Heavy Psych Sounds. Blast the title track now courtesy of Metal Injection!

Get ready to be overtaken by a storm of pachyderm-hefty riffs, wooly bass, fierce drumming, and witchy vocals. ACID MAMMOTH’s highly anticipated fourth album is an unholy celebration of all things heavy, and as the album progresses, it just keeps getting doomier. “Supersonic Megafauna Collision” is an evil and explosive album drenched in 666% fuzz!

About this new album, vocalist and guitarist Chris Babalis Jr. says: “While the previous album was composed and recorded during a state of total COVID lockdown in 2020, our new album was composed and recorded after the world had gotten back to a new state of normalcy, after we had toured and played shows all over Europe, and all that enthusiasm and excitement we gathered while touring was put into this new album. We wanted to record a heavy and explosive album with lots of fuzz, that retains what made our sound great in our previous releases but take it a few steps further, and that’s exactly what we did. The album starts as a celebration of all things fuzzy with the title track “Supersonic Megafauna Collision”, and it just gets darker and darker as the album progresses, until it concludes in complete and utter heartbreak with the song “Tusko’s Last Trip”, telling the heart-wrenching real story of Tusko, an elephant who was murdered as a result of cruel human experimentation.”

“Supersonic Megafauna Collision” was recorded, mixed, and mastered at Descent Studio, with drums recorded at Ritual Studios. The artwork was created by Branca Studio.

Mario Lalli and the Rubber Snake Charmers to Release Folklore From the Other Desert Cities March 19

Posted in Whathaveyou on December 26th, 2023 by JJ Koczan

MARIO LALLI & THE RUBBER SNAKE CHARMERS

Announced last week as signing to Heavy Psych Sounds with intention toward a debut album, Mario Lalli and the Rubber Snake Charmers, will release Folklore From the Other Desert Cities on March 19 as their recorded debut. The four-jam outing was recorded in Gold Coast, Australia, as part of a video stream for Desert.TV that you can see below, and was originally pressed to a limited-to-50-copies cassette called Forgetting Out Loud by Northern Haze Records.

I’m pretty sure ‘Other Desert Cities’ is what it says on some highway sign or other — the 101? the 10? — but the bottom line here that you’re getting a couple of Californian desert rock’s most primo ambassadors caught in the act pursuing their integral diplomatic function. And if you’d be like, ‘well how come they’re releasing a thing under a different name when it was already out and why would I buy it when I can stream it and and and…,” relax. They’re releasing a thing under a different name because it’s worth releasing and they wanted to give it what they felt would be a representative package for CD/LP distribution in more than 50 copies — that’s not a rag on Northern Haze at all; those tapes are beautiful and I could spend hundreds of Canadian dollars on that site if only I had them — and you should buy it even though you can stream it because that’s how everybody keeps getting to do what they do. You gotta put the coin in the hat.

Here’s the info and the video, which, duh, is groovin’. Have fun:

Heavy Psych Sounds to announce MARIO LALLI & THE RUBBER SNAKE CHARMERS – ‘Folklore From The Other Desert Cities’ !!!

New super-band featuring desert rock legends Mario Lalli, Brant Bjork, Sean Wheeler and Ryan Güt !!!

The first release from this band of pioneering Desert rock musicians captures the band and its purest form exercising the desert born ethic and approach of rock improvisation, psychedelic and flowing, heavy and explorative.

The foundation of Mario Lalli’s grooving heavy bass lines and meditative themes with a intuitive guitar work with Brant Bjork and percussion of Ryan Güt set the scene for Sean Wheeler’s poems and songs capturing the dark and beautiful stories and images of life in the Mojave desert of Southern California.

Tracklisting:

1. Creosote Breeze
2. Swamp Cooler Reality
3. Other Desert Cities
4. The Devil Waits For Me

Recorded live at Mo’s Desert Clubhouse, Gold Coast Australia by Guy Cooper and mixed and mastered by Mathias Schneeberger at Donner & Blitzen Studios, California. The band’s first release features BRANT BJORK, SEAN WHEELER, RYAN GUT and MARIO LALLI, capturing the band in a engaging special performance in Gold Coast Australia.

Bongzilla Announce Spring European Tour

Posted in Whathaveyou on December 21st, 2023 by JJ Koczan

The stoned wanderings of Wisconsin crust-sludge trail-and-whatever-else-you-got-blazers Bongzilla will lead the three-piece abroad once again this coming Spring. They go in support of 2023’s Dab City (review here) and in glorious pursuit of new heights of consciousness and probably trying not to forget stuff along the way. They spent most of this year on the road through the US, hitting both coasts — you’ll recall ‘Dabbing Westward,’ which was incredibly, incredibly clever — and points between, but also did a huge UK/Euro run.

Heading back to Europe is fair game for the kingpins, who’ll start at the Go Down Records-affiliated Maximum Festival before appearing at both Heavy Psych Fests in Italy, heading north for Desertfest Oslo, and looping back down through Germany and France. There are a couple dates to fill, and though I was a little surprised not to see the tour go through Desertfest London and to end before Desertfest Berlin happens, looking back, they were in Berlin on the 2023 tour and they played London in 2022. After that, the inaugural Oslo edition seems like a good way to go in making the rounds, out-stonering the universe as they will.

The poster rules and of course the tour was put together by Heavy Psych Sounds, who sent this down the PR wire:

Hijss to Release Stuck on Common Ground March 8; “1234me” Video Posted

Posted in Whathaveyou on December 13th, 2023 by JJ Koczan

hijss

Italy’s Hijss — which I’ve also seen stylized as both all-caps and no-caps, so I think maybe they’re flexible — will make their full-length debut on March 8 through Heavy Psych Sounds with Stuck on Common Ground. To mark the launch of preorders and in keeping with the label’s general modus, the first single has been unveiled as “1234me,” which you’ll find in the video embed at the bottom of this post. Playing to some skate competition or other in the clip suits the crunchy riff and spacey groove well, a style the PR wire calls ‘cosmic grunge,’ which isn’t quite entirely representative of “1234me,” but if you remember grunge as born out of punk and noise and take the space, psychedelia and atmospherics from ‘cosmic,’ you’re at least on your way.

“1234me” first showed up on Hijss‘ Bandcamp in late 2021 alongside the moodier “Narcolepsy” (just a bit of Clutch‘s blues in the vocals and mellow vibe there before it picks up in the second half) which will open side B when it appears on Stuck on Common Ground. The two tracks together show some measure of range between them and I wouldn’t be surprised if the record went a few weirder places considering the open-feeling approach to craft it takes, but of course we have a while before we get there. Everything’s a process. The PR wire began this one thusly:

ALBUM DESCRIPTION

Stuck on common ground is the debut album of the Italian Power Trio hijss.

With a mixture of heavy blues influenced riffs and synthesized Krautrock parts hijss tries to create a high dynamic range that will keep your attention at all time. On top of gritty basslines and ferocious drums lie cosmic guitars, tantalizing vocals and arpeggiated electronic drones. All three band members come from a vast musical background. Their common denominator is with out a doubt a punkish attitude.

The album was produced by Toni Quiroga and hijss, drums were recorded at Nologo Recording Studio, Laives by “holy barbarian” Fabio Sforza. Engineered, mixed and mastered at accept productions by Toni Quiroga, album cover by Luca Guarino.

BIOGRAPHY

From northern Italy’s summits, through clouds and airplanes, a wall of sound spirals downhill as hijss marks its birth. Stimulated by the musical instinct of the band’s mastermind Lois Lane (guitar & vocals), Maurice’s (drums) ferocious hits and Pan’s (bass & synth) catchy scales the music does not only scratch the surface but goes deep under your skin. The band puts genres in the background zapping from punk over blues to space and psychedelic rock. The outcome is a melting pot called: cosmic grunge. That means whatever you want it to mean …

Heavy Psych Sounds Fest Italy 2024 Announces First Bands

Posted in Whathaveyou on December 12th, 2023 by JJ Koczan

Okeydokey, what do we learn here? Bongzilla will be in Europe this Spring, and Mondo Generator will be out to follow up on Nick Oliveri‘s winter solo tour, and Kadabra will go supporting their most excellent 2023 outing, Umbra (review here), though that was already apparent from the first Desertfest London announce. Along with MR.BISON, the esteemed Ufomammut — who’ll have a new LP out sometime in 2024, allegedly — Greek mainstays Nightstalker and upstarts 1782, speedrockers Tankzilla and punkers The Clamps, that’s the bill as it stands that will swap acts back and forth across two nights in Bologna and Trieste next May for Heavy Psych Sounds Fest Italy 2024.

This is not the end of the announcements, of course, but it’s a rousing start as the Italian label and booking agency continues to branch out to new places. You’ll note Trieste is home for Rocket Panda Management, who are involved here and also behind the StonerKras Fest that’s taken place the last couple of years later in the summer. I assume that’s still happening too, and will do so until I hear or see otherwise.

I don’t have numbers on the site’s readership in Bologna or Trieste, but I think these things are relevant anyway exactly because of the above: they show you who’s going to be where when. And it gives me an excuse to post the Kadabra record again. Double-win.
