End Hip End It: Acid King, Elder, Dead Meadow, Josefus & Many More to Play

Posted in Whathaveyou on August 14th, 2017 by JJ Koczan

I’m not gonna discount the notion of seeing the likes of Josefus sharing the stage with The Well and Doomstress, or of watching the almighty Acid King roll out their riffly triumphs next to Dead MeadowElderMothership and a megaslew of others, but I think the fact that if you buy a ticket for the second day of End Hip End It you get two slices of pizza speaks volumes to the vibe the Spring, Texas-based festival is going for, and that’s a vibe with which I think just about anybody can get down.

The lineup is varied from Funeral Horse and Switchblade Jesus to King Buffalo and Stone Machine Electric, but there’s a heaping representation of the fertile Texan underground here, and that’s likewise respectable. My understanding is they’ve run into some branding issues — I guess repeating any word in your fest name in Texas is verboten because you’re making fun of SXSW? seems to me SXSW could stand to be taken down a peg or two, but couldn’t we all? — and might rename the event for 2018, but whatever you call it, it looks like a good time to me.

Doomstress Announce ‘May-Day Mayhem’ Tour Dates

Posted in Whathaveyou on May 1st, 2017 by JJ Koczan

Hell, you know I’m a sucker for a cleverly-named tour. Texas heavy rockers Doomstress, after sharing the stage with the formidable likes of The Obsessed, Karma to Burn and Lo-Pan later this week, will head out on their ‘May-Day! Mayhem’ tour, playing shows in the South and the Midwest as they loop their way around the circuit. They’ll keep good company all the while, between the likes of Fiddle Witch, The Judge, Iron Tongue, Stone Machine Electric, Devil to Pay, Forming the Void and so on. You can always tell a band is well liked when they play with a bunch of awesome people.

This marks Doomstress‘ second tour of the year after hitting the West Coast with Portland’s Disenchanter. Dates and lineup info come courtesy of the PR wire:

Doomstress and Disenchanter Announce ‘How the West was Doomed’ Tour

Posted in Whathaveyou on February 28th, 2017 by JJ Koczan

Let’s face facts: There shouldn’t be a single date on this tour that’s TBA. Sorry, but that’s the way it is. I’m not saying it’s a vast conspiracy or anything, but for real, Denver, Boise, San Francisco, San Diego, Tucson, etc., where are you on this one? Disenchanter and Doomstress hitting the road together? Between bands in the TBA geography and club promoters with nights to fill, it should be an absolute no-brainer for heavy rock heads. The call makes itself. Get on it if you’re not already on it.

Shit, you guys need a show in Massachusetts? Come on up, we’ll figure something out. Worst case, you play my house and I’ll make everyone a delicious low-carb dinner and milkshakes afterward. Yeah, I know it’s not exactly on the routing for a West Coast run, but a gig’s a gig. Let me know. Offer’s on the table.

Take a look at the dates below, and if you can help out the bands, it’s as easy as the paragraph above makes it sound. You can probably even let them fend for themselves as regards dinner, if that’s how it absolutely has to be:

Doomstress Announce “Southern Bounty” Tour Dates

Posted in Whathaveyou on September 29th, 2016 by JJ Koczan

A scant couple months after rounding out the summer with a run through the Midwest, Houston-based dark heavy rockers Doomstress will head out on their next tour, this time hitting the Southeast on a run dubbed “Southern Bounty.” Sure enough it’s harvest season, and by the time they go, Doomstress will have released their new single, Wicked Woman, on limited vinyl through DHU Records, so all the more appropriate in terms of their timing. In October, they’ll also make a hometown appearance at the End Hip End It fest, alongside Radio MoscowMondo DragCrypt Trip and a vast assortment of others.

Worth noting that bassist/vocalist “Doomstress” Alexis Hollada and lead guitarist/backing vocalist Brandon Johnson will be joined this time around by a different drummer and second guitarist, rounding out the latest lineup of the four-piece. I’ll be curious to see how their lineup ultimately shakes out past this second single and headed into whatever might be next, be it an EP, full-length debut or what. Till then, tour starts Nov. 4:

Doomstress Announce “Wicked Summer” Midwestern Tour

Posted in Whathaveyou on July 27th, 2016 by JJ Koczan

It was little more than a week ago that Houston dark heavy rockers Doomstress announced their forthcoming Wicked Woman single, to be released as a 7″ vinyl in time for their upcoming tour. There were a few shows announced at the time for that stint, including the Tennessean Sludge Fest, where Doomstress will headline along with Place of Skulls and Shroud Eater, among many others playing, but the rest of the tour has completely solidified with a Chicago venue just added for Sept. 3. Nice to get these things nailed down.

They’ll be traveling with Venomin JamesJoe Fortunato — apparently now also in Ancient VVisdom — on second guitar and continue to record new material as they go. Doesn’t look like the 7″ will be done in time to hit the road with the band, but something tells me this won’t be the last tour they announce. Call it a hunch.

From the PR wire:

Doomstress Announce Wicked Woman Limited 7″ Single

Posted in Whathaveyou on July 18th, 2016 by JJ Koczan

doomstress-wicked-woman-cover-art

Houston dark heavy rockers Doomstress have hooked up with DHU Records to release a new limited single called Wicked Woman. The cover art, by the renowned David Paul Seymour, is NSFW — aside from being generally sick of littering this site with cartoon tits and of heavy rock’s over-usage of them in general, I have a job now where that kind of thing matters — but can be viewed by clicking the cropped header above. Spoiler: there are cartoon tits involved.

No audio yet from the single, but the lead track is a cover of Coven‘s “Wicked Woman” from 1969’s Witchcraft Destroys Minds and Reaps Souls, and Doomstress made their debut earlier this year with the two-songer Supernatural Kvlt Sounds (video premiere here), from which the track “Way of the Mountain” — featured on the Wicked Woman 7″ — also comes.

The total number pressed is 250, and that’s split between red-and-black splatter and purple-and-orange splatter versions, both of which look awesome and ideally will be back from the plant before Doomstress head out on tour in the Midwest and East Coast. They’re due to make a stop at Tennesseean Sludge Fest on Aug. 19 and will reportedly have more dates added around that. I’ll post when I hear about them.

Till then, here’s the info on the new single:

DOOMSTRESS has signed with DHU Records for a 7″ vinyl release of :
“Way of the Mountain” / “Wicked Woman” single
Original artwork by David Paul Seymour
Cover concept by Doomstress Alexis

Limited to 250 copies:
150 Red with Black splatter-band edition)
100 Purple with Orange splatter-DHU exclusive
Scheduled for release in late summer
(hopefully in time for our #WickedSummerTour )

Doomstress, featuring members of Project Armageddon, Sparrowmilk & Venomin James, will be touring the midwest/northeast US over the summer to support their debut. Among their stops will be The Tennessean Sludge Fest! More dates and info tba

Doomstress Premiere “Way of the Mountain” Lyric Video

Posted in Bootleg Theater on May 11th, 2016 by JJ Koczan

doomstress logo

Comprised of members of Project ArmageddonSparrowmilk and Venomin JamesDoomstress is a new trio looking to make their debut sometime in the coming months with an EP titled Supernatural Kvlt Sounds. The first audio from the recently-formed outfit arrives as a lyric video to the song “Way of the Mountain,” which finds the three-piece — “Doomstress” Alexis Hollada on bass/vocals, Brandon Johnson on guitar and Tomasz Scull on drums — chugging through doomed-out riffs and grooving into a solid introductory chorus. With empowerment lyrics and nature footage in the video for atmosphere, one begins to get a sense of what Doomstress are about, and the different vibe they’re going for separate from Project Armageddon, from whence Hollada and Johnson hail, who released their more metallic third album, Cosmic Oblivion (review here), last year.

The EP brings forth two originals in “Way of the Mountain” and “Sleep Among the Dead,” as well as covers of Uriah Heep and Coven, and while I wouldn’t attempt to judge a new band’s trajectory from hearing one song and reading the titles of three others, between that, the logos courtesy of The Perverted Old Goatess and the “Way of the Mountain” video below, Doomstress distinguish themselves by bringing a hard edge to modern doom, the heft in Johnson‘s guitar tone holding onto some of that punch from Cosmic Oblivion. Where Supernatural Kvlt Sounds, as their initial recordings, might lead them, probably best not to speculate, but the underlying foundation of songwriting they show in “Way of the Mountain,” the nodding toward a classic influence in their choice of covers and the clear intention toward aesthetic commitment they’re making at the outset all would seem to auger well.

Go ahead and get yourself introduced by checking out the video below, which is followed by some more background on the band, and please enjoy:

Doomstress, “Way of the Mountain” lyric video

Formed by Doomstress Alexis of Project Armageddon from Houston,TX, covering bass & vocals, she asked fellow Project Armageddon bandmate Brandon Johnson to bring his guitar skills to the sonic altar for her new project. Rounding out the project, Doomstress Alexis tapped Sparrowmilk drummer, Tomasz Scull from Cleveland, OH (also guitarist for Venomin James) to contribute his percussive stylings.

doomstress square logoDoomstress Alexis and Brandon travelled to Ohio in March to complete writing and to record a 4 song demo ep, “Supernatural Kvlt Sounds”, consisting of 2 originals and 2 covers.

Doomstress Alexis had certain artistic aesthetic ideas in mind for the new DOOMSTRESS project and shared these with Goatess Doomwych (the674society) who crafted the logo and art designs.

“Doomstress was spawned by Doomstress Alexis’s desire to take a more personal musical direction. While still rooted in doom and metal, Doomstress seeks to invoke heavier grooves found more in vintage & stoner rock. The layering of twin guitar and vocal harmonies allows Doomstress to bring a darker ambience and mood to the music. Lyrically and visually Doomstress appeals to free spiritedness, strength of self, elements of nature & the supernatural, as well as some occult and gothic themes.”

EP tracklisting:
1-Way of the Mountain
2-Rainbow Demon (Uriah Heep cover)
3-Sleep Among the Dead
4-Wicked Woman (Coven cover)
