Friday Full-Length: Zoroaster, Matador

Posted in Bootleg Theater on December 30th, 2016 by JJ Koczan

Zoroaster, Matador (2010)

There’s a repeated line in the opener of Zoroaster‘s Matador (review here) that would seem to sum up the entire attitude of the album. It goes: ‘Don’t tell me how to die.’ I’m not sure if I’d call it part of a chorus, but it comes up once or twice in “D.N.R.” and as the last line of the song, is the lead-in to the bizarro crush that follows throughout the Atlanta-based doomers’ 2010 swansong. I recall when I first heard the record — which arrived just one year after their second outing, 2009’s Voice of Saturn (review here), as their debut on E1 Music — it took a while to settle in, and by that I mean I didn’t completely understand what the three-piece of guitarist/vocalist Will Fiore, bassist/vocalist Brent Anderson and drummer Dan Scanlan were doing with their sound. I’d followed their progress since their 2005 self-titled CD demo through the self-released 2007 debut, Dog Magic, and on from there, and everything they did from outing to outing showed clear growth from one to the next, but when the nine-track/44-minute Matador hit with its swirling, Sanford Parker-produced spaciousness, the prevailing vibe was so weird that I was caught almost entirely off-guard. One expected big riffs and grooves from Zoroaster. One didn’t expect the chants and meditations of “Old World.” It took some getting used to.

On the off-chance you clicked the review link in the first sentence of this post, you’ll see I did eventually adjust my consciousness to Matador‘s wavelength. Took me a minute, but I got there. The record came out in July 2010 — I had an interview with Fiore up to mark the release; spoke to him a few times over the years and he never remembered me but was always cool to talk to — and by then I was ready to proclaim it one of the year’s best. Six years later, I stand by that. It would wind up being Zoroaster‘s final album, but at the time, Matador sounded like it was just the beginning, and in that blend of psychedelia and the churning sludge from whence they emerged, FioreAnderson and Scanlan discovered a sound that was truly their own — one only bolstered by Parker‘s production. Their years of hard touring paid off in pure aesthetic achievement, and whether it was the rawer thrust of “Ancient Ones,” the soaring leads of “Trident,” the meaner shouts of “Black Hole” or the languid vibes of “Odyssey II,” a companion-piece to righteous and deceptively catchy third cut “Odyssey,” and the final gravity well of its title-track, Matador was immersive across its span in a way that neither Voice of Saturn nor Dog Magic could’ve possibly been. That’s not to say anything against either of those LPs, which I wouldn’t do, just that the effort Zoroaster put into what they did came to fruition in these tracks, and as we moved into the current decade, they seemed poised to be among the forerunners of adventurous, forward thinking US doom. New label, more expansive sound, touring as much as ever — there were few safer bets to make.

Accordingly, that’s not at all how it went. These years later, I’m somewhat amazed that in the array of reunions happening, nobody has kicked around Zoroaster‘s name as one due for a resurgence. Maybe it’s too soon — the last touring I heard of from them was with Church of Misery in 2013; by then, Anderson was out of the band and replaced by Mike Morris — but their laser lightshow was always welcome every time I was able to catch it and I can’t imagine their presentation wouldn’t find favor amid the new generation of heavy aficionados that has surfaced in increasing numbers since the band’s departure. We may or may not get there eventually — you won’t find me daring to predict, having sort of learned my lesson in that regard — but the point is that both live and in the studio, Zoroaster were a special group and delivered something that no one else did in quite the same way. I have to wonder what planes of existence they might’ve moved to had they kept going after Matador, where all this lysergic weight would’ve carried them. As it stands, one can find Anderson in Order of the Owl, who released their We are Here to Collect Our Crown EP earlier this year following up on 2012’s In the Noon of the After Day full-length debut, while Fiore rounds out the four-piece incarnation of Royal Thunder, who will reportedly have a new record out in 2017. Last I heard, Scanlan, who was an absolute difference-maker especially on stage, wasn’t currently with a band.

Whether Zoroaster ever make a return is something the years will tell, but in revisiting Matador so long after the fact, it’s even more obvious to me how much they had to offer. If you were into it at the time or if it’s new to you now, I hope you enjoy.

It was a quiet week overall, though it hardly started that way on Monday driving back from holiday celebrations with family in New Jersey. Granted we stopped for dinner, but seven-plus hours of a four-hour trip felt perhaps needlessly brutal. Fortunately, I had plenty of time to recover with the week off from work. And that’s exactly what I did. Errands here and there, and it turned out to be the perfect span for the Quarterly Review — which wraps on Monday — since otherwise it was pretty quiet, but in the main it was delicious food prepared not at all in a post-workday panic, hanging out with The Patient Mrs. playing Final Fantasy XV, making our way through the entirety of the Die Hard film franchise, etc.

Call it a reminder of how much I prefer existence when I can wake up and write every day on my own terms; of what I want my life to be. I need weeks like this.

Next week, a return to somewhat frenetic normalcy. Here’s what I’ve got planned so far, subject to change as always:

SUN: Year-End Poll results.
MON: Quarterly Review Day 6 and a new video from The Progerians.
TUE: Sgt. Sunshine review and Drone Hunter video.
WED: Review/premiere from Blood Mist, announcement from Hair of the Dog.
THU: Much-delayed Surya Kris Peters review, video premiere from Drive by Wire.
FRI: Sergio Ch. review slated as of now, but that might shift.

Lots of good stuff to come as we get into 2017. I’ve got my list of most anticipated releases coming together — it’s over 100 strong at this point. I want a week or two to solidify things further and give myself a break from writing lists generally, but it’ll be posted before the end of January.

In the meantime, as noted above, the motherload of lists — the results of the Year-End Poll — goes up this weekend, so stay tuned for that. As of this post, it’s still a really close race as it has been all month, and we’ve totally blown away last year’s number of contributors by nearly 200, so I’m very, very pleased with how it’s all turning out. Of course, everyone’s list will be included as always. It will be massive and probably crash the site, but whatever. Poll-time comes but once a year.

I say this every week, but if you’re the type to celebrate New Year’s, it’s especially true: Please be safe and have a great time. No DUIs, no fireworks blowing off hands, none of that shit. Not saying you can’t enjoy yourself, just saying no casualties. The universe needs all the rockers it can get.

Alright, that’s it for me. Can’t say I’ll mourn 2016’s passing, as it was a rough one on any number of levels personal and otherwise, but let’s all look forward and hope for better times to come. Please know you have my best wishes.

And please check out the forum and radio stream.

Sons of Tonatiuh Post New Track; East Coast Tour Starts Wednesday

Posted in Whathaveyou on June 16th, 2015 by JJ Koczan

sons of tonatiuh

One assumes a “Skull File” is the cabinet in which one keeps one’s meticulously organized collection of skulls. It’s also the name of the new song posted by Atlanta sludgers Sons of Tonatiuh, who will head out on an East Coast tour this Wednesday. Recorded in 2013, “Skull File” will also feature on their to-be-tracked third album, which presumably they’ll put to tape before heading abroad this fall, a run for which the tour dates have yet to be revealed.

Actually, we don’t know much about the album yet either. I’d say Sons of Tonatiuh were playing it close to the chest, but on the other hand, they’re letting people hear rough versions of new songs — they’re not calling it a demo, so I won’t either — months ahead of the album on which they’ll later appear. So you know, give and take.

The PR wire has it like this:

SONS OF TONATIUH: Atlanta Sludge Faction To Kick Off East Coast Live Invasion Wednesday; Unreleased Track Posted

This Wednesday, the sludge slingers in SONS OF TONATIUH will quake the stages of eleven venues on their latest jaunt of live debauchery. Scheduled to embark this Wednesday on their home turf of Atlanta at 529, the band will make their way North and back again, playing several locales they’ve yet to punish, with the tour coming to a close on June 27th in Raleigh. Bring ear plugs.

SONS OF TONATIUH recently unveiled the diseased fruits of unreleased track, “Skull File,” for public intoxication. The scathing hymn was tracked at a home studio in Atlanta in the Fall of 2013 with engineering band acquaintance, Ben Martin, and serves as a precursor to the recording of their full-length, slated to begin this Summer. Their as-yet-untitled third offering will include a re-recorded version of “Skull File,” as well as seven brand new tracks of slow-roasted wrath and desolation.

Sons of Tonatiuh Touring East Coast in June

Posted in Whathaveyou on May 8th, 2015 by JJ Koczan

sons of tonatiuh

Atlanta sludge crushers Sons of Tonatiuh will hit the East Coast for 11 shows in 11 nights starting June 17. The trio, who also toured in Japan last year, are set to make a return to the UK and Europe this Fall alongside Grey Widow as well, though those dates are less firmed up at this point as the band looks to begin a round of heavy road-time in support of their still TBA third full-length, which will be the follow-up to 2012’s Parade of Sorrow.

More to come, I’m sure, but with that in mind, here are the East Coast dates and some comment from the band, hot off the PR wire:

SONS OF TONATIUH: Atlanta Sludge Trio Set For East Coast Takeover Next Month

Atlanta sludge trio, SONS OF TONATIUH, will take to the streets next month on another round of lead-footed live invasions touting psalms from their impending new full-length. The tour will kick off on June 17th on their home turf and stomp its way through eleven metropolises in eight states – some of which the band has never performed — concluding on June 27th in Raleigh. Ears will be deafened. Children will cry.

“Seven years running and the coals are still blazing bright,” offers the band of their latest bout of onstage annihilation. “With our first time up to Buffalo and Boston, the Armageddon will ensue. This tour will be in support of our upcoming third release. Touring will be non-stop for the next couple of years as we plan to cover new ground across the pond as well as within this great mud bowl. We hope to see some old friends as well as meet some new ones so don’t be a stranger and come out and support our venom towards authority.”

Ripple Music Announces 12″ Split Series Beginning with Borracho and Volume IV

Posted in Whathaveyou on February 4th, 2015 by JJ Koczan

ripple music logo

It’s enough to make your head spin. Today Ripple Music announced their ambitious intent to create a series of limited vinyl split releases called The Second Coming of Heavy, and while one could sit and argue the number of the “coming of heavy” in which we now reside — I’d call it at least the third — the thought behind it and the label’s purposeful delving into the underground are admirable in the extreme. Each 12″ release will be limited to one-time, 300-copy pressings, and the first unites Washington D.C. riff-mongers Borracho, freshly back from the West Coast and hot off the prior announcement of a split with Brooklyn’s Eggnogg, with Georgia’s Volume IV, whose Ripple debut, Long in the Tooth (review here), was released last year.

The LP is due out late April or early May, as Ripple explains below:

borracho volume iv split

I’ve been working on this for over a year and am so psyched to finally break my silence. Ever since we formed Ripple, I’d always loved the old SubPop model of a subscription club. Well, this is our contribution to that legacy. Not a subscription, but an ongoing three times a year, 12″ split series “The Second Coming of Heavy” Featuring the best and most exciting emerging bands from the underground, already onboard with the project are Borracho, Volume IV, Supervoid, Red Wizard, Desert Suns, Bonehawk, Blue Snaggletooth, Red Desert, Switchblade Jesus, Geezer, Chiefs, Red Mesa and more bands coming like crazy.

Each “chapter” of the series will be strictly limited to 300, with no repressings and will have three editions, Black Virgin (for those who love black vinyl), OBI Edition, and the Resurrection Edition. These will be the most badass vinyl we’ve ever put out, with the art all tied together by Joseph Rudell. Expect Chapter One to come out end April or early May. Here’s a sneak peek at the first cover.

Royal Thunder to Release Crooked Doors on April 7

Posted in Whathaveyou on January 20th, 2015 by JJ Koczan

I guess I didn’t realize that Zoroaster‘s Will Fiore had joined Royal Thunder. Not sure if he features on their new album, Crooked Doors, or not. Going back to when the Atlanta-based outfit recorded last year, he doesn’t seem to be in the studio pictures, but I wouldn’t necessarily rely on that as absolute confirmation. It’s easy to be wrong about this stuff. In any case, his tone is never a bad one to have around, and should do well live alongside Mlny Parsonz‘s bass, Josh Weaver‘s guitar and Evan Diprima‘s drums.

Royal Thunder‘s 2012 Relapse Records debut, CVI, was one of that year’s most celebrated releases, and the band — then a trio — toured hard to support it, so I’d expect no less this time around. The PR wire info below makes some mention of tour dates to follow, and it seems reasonable to think that after the success last time, Royal Thunder will hit it with no letup probably through the end of 2015 and into 2016 before there’s any kind of slowdown. They’ve proven durable enough on the road and will doubtless only be louder with Fiore in tow.

The quickie album announcement follows:

ROYAL THUNDER RETURN WITH CROOKED DOORS ON APRIL 7

“Show us the door that is not crooked but cracked. Which leads us to that open road. Let us walk through that.” – Royal Thunder

Royal Thunder, the female-fronted hard rock quartet whose debut album, CVI, earned praise from Rolling Stone, NPR, Revolver and saw singer Mlny Parsonz land on the cover of Decibel Magazine, release their follow-up full-length, Crooked Doors, on April 7 via Relapse Records.

“It’s been too long,” said the band. “Thanks for being patient with us in delivering this album! We hope you are fond of it. Looking forward to revisiting familiar places and face.”

The eleven-song album was recorded throughout 2014, with principal recording done at Aria Recording Studio in Marietta, GA with producer Joey Jones.

More details, including tour dates, to come.

Mastodon and Clutch Announce “The Missing Link” Tour

Posted in Whathaveyou on January 20th, 2015 by JJ Koczan

You’ve probably already seen this news everywhere, but I’d be remiss if I didn’t post about the fact that Mastodon and Clutch are touring together and that Big Business and Graveyard will switch off in the support role. Some things are just too badass not to post, no matter how ubiquitous they might be.

The tour starts April 16 in St. Paul, Minnesota, and all that’s really left to wonder is if Clutch‘s new album — which is being recorded this month — will be released by the time the run ends on May 24. Either way, it’s pretty astounding that these two have come together, so I’ll get out of the way and defer to the PR wire, which has dates and details:

Volume IV Announce Tour Dates with Order of the Owl

Posted in Whathaveyou on April 21st, 2014 by JJ Koczan

In their ongoing bid to both burl-rock the pants off of everybody in the house and help save the environment — please note: I have no idea that either of those is a stated goal for either band — Atlanta-based outfits Volume IV and Order of the Owl will be carpooling their way north together as they both head to Worcester, MA, to play The Eye of the Stoned Goat 4 on May 4. For Volume IV, they’re out supporting their Ripple Music debut, Long in the Tooth (review/stream here), and Order of the Owl will hit stages boasting a recently-recorded batch of new material that’s likely to see proper release later this year, either by the band itself or through some yet-undisclosed label.

It’s not listed with the rest of the dates below, but Order of the Owl just announced they’ll also be opening for Eyehategod at the Masquerade in Atlanta on May 28 and later in summer, they play the Southern Darkness Fest 2014 on Aug. 23 with ASG, Zoroaster, Pelican, A Storm of Light and more at the Orpheum in Tampa, Florida. Info on that is here.

audiObelisk: Volume IV Stream Ripple Music Debut Long in the Tooth in Full

Posted in audiObelisk on March 7th, 2014 by JJ Koczan

It was just about a year ago that Atlanta trio Volume IV — who I think it’s safe to say have the best band moniker to come along since Masters of Reality — self-released their self-titled debut EP, compiling four tracks in what save for its cohesiveness might’ve been considered a demo. March 2014 finds them having worked quickly on their first full-length outing, Long in the Tooth, which is out next week on Ripple Music, available now to preorder and based around 10 songs boasting similar heavy rock burl and dudely push, influences from Clutch, C.O.C., early Down and Alabama Thunderpussy showing up in various points filtered through songwriting of consistent quality and marked heft. If you’ve never had a riff stuck in your head for days on end, there’s probably a good deal about what Volume IV have to offer that will be either over (or under) your head, but among the whiskey ‘n’ Sabbath set, a cut like the ’70s motor-shuffling “Wager” is bound to feel just like home.

You might note a twin guitar lead in that one — because when you’re going to do Thin Lizzy, you do it right, goddammit — but Volume IV are indeed a three-piece, made up of guitarist/vocalist Joe Carpenter (ex-Nihilist, and not the Nihilist who became Entombed, but a different Nihilist), bassist Blake Parris and drummer Troy King. They deal volume with gusto enough to crash lesser media players on swaggering jams like “Blackwater” and opener “Looking Low for a High,” but in partially acoustic pieces like “Cabal” and “Save Your Prayers” — which together sandwich the formidable hook of “Awake the Dreamer” — Volume IV show there’s more to their approach than beardo ballsiness, organ on the country-fried “Save Your Servant” adding to the lost-soul overtones in Carpenter‘s delivery. “Save Your Servant” (5:05) and the hey-remember-the-self-titled-Clutch-record easy-rolling groove of “Blackwater” (6:21) are the two longest in Long in the Tooth, but otherwise share little in common, making a conveniently assembled example of the album’s sonic diversity within its bruiser sphere.

That is to say that while the bulk of Volume IV‘s stylistic take could easily ring familiar to heads who’ve been around Southern heavy for a minute, the band has more in mind than copping riffs from Deliverance, though with a lyrical Pulp Fiction reference in tow, “Kong” seems ready with precisely that brand of righteousness. In order to get a feel for the full LP, there’s nothing quite like a complete listen, so ahead of the official March 11 release, I’m happy to be able to host a front-to-back stream of Long in the Tooth for your listening pleasure. Find it on the player below, followed by some info on the limited edition vinyl version, which is awfully pretty:

[mp3player width=480 height=400 config=fmp_jw_widget_config.xml playlist=volume-iv-long-in-the-tooth.xml]

Less than 100 of these beauts were pressed! Multi-colored vinyl includes 11 x 17 poster, download card and Long In The Tooth CD!!!

With equal parts elegant beauty and steamrolling aggression, Atlanta’s Volume IV serve up a piece of ear candy for the ages with Long In The Tooth. This first release with Ripple Music is a concise thirty-six minute thrill ride of swampy metal heroics, featuring heavy grooves, classic stoner riffs, and an overall impending sense of doom. Led by singer/guitarist Joe Carpenter (Nihilist) and filled out by bassist Blake Parris and drummer Troy King, Volume IV is set to stun the music world with one of the most anticipated releases of the year!
