Sons of Tonatiuh Post New Track; East Coast Tour Starts Wednesday

One assumes a “Skull File” is the cabinet in which one keeps one’s meticulously organized collection of skulls. It’s also the name of the new song posted by Atlanta sludgers Sons of Tonatiuh, who will head out on an East Coast tour this Wednesday. Recorded in 2013, “Skull File” will also feature on their to-be-tracked third album, which presumably they’ll put to tape before heading abroad this fall, a run for which the tour dates have yet to be revealed.

Actually, we don’t know much about the album yet either. I’d say Sons of Tonatiuh were playing it close to the chest, but on the other hand, they’re letting people hear rough versions of new songs — they’re not calling it a demo, so I won’t either — months ahead of the album on which they’ll later appear. So you know, give and take.

The PR wire has it like this:

SONS OF TONATIUH: Atlanta Sludge Faction To Kick Off East Coast Live Invasion Wednesday; Unreleased Track Posted

This Wednesday, the sludge slingers in SONS OF TONATIUH will quake the stages of eleven venues on their latest jaunt of live debauchery. Scheduled to embark this Wednesday on their home turf of Atlanta at 529, the band will make their way North and back again, playing several locales they’ve yet to punish, with the tour coming to a close on June 27th in Raleigh. Bring ear plugs.

SONS OF TONATIUH recently unveiled the diseased fruits of unreleased track, “Skull File,” for public intoxication. The scathing hymn was tracked at a home studio in Atlanta in the Fall of 2013 with engineering band acquaintance, Ben Martin, and serves as a precursor to the recording of their full-length, slated to begin this Summer. Their as-yet-untitled third offering will include a re-recorded version of “Skull File,” as well as seven brand new tracks of slow-roasted wrath and desolation.

Sons of Tonatiuh Touring East Coast in June

Posted in Whathaveyou on May 8th, 2015 by JJ Koczan

sons of tonatiuh

Atlanta sludge crushers Sons of Tonatiuh will hit the East Coast for 11 shows in 11 nights starting June 17. The trio, who also toured in Japan last year, are set to make a return to the UK and Europe this Fall alongside Grey Widow as well, though those dates are less firmed up at this point as the band looks to begin a round of heavy road-time in support of their still TBA third full-length, which will be the follow-up to 2012’s Parade of Sorrow.

More to come, I’m sure, but with that in mind, here are the East Coast dates and some comment from the band, hot off the PR wire:

SONS OF TONATIUH: Atlanta Sludge Trio Set For East Coast Takeover Next Month

Atlanta sludge trio, SONS OF TONATIUH, will take to the streets next month on another round of lead-footed live invasions touting psalms from their impending new full-length. The tour will kick off on June 17th on their home turf and stomp its way through eleven metropolises in eight states – some of which the band has never performed — concluding on June 27th in Raleigh. Ears will be deafened. Children will cry.

“Seven years running and the coals are still blazing bright,” offers the band of their latest bout of onstage annihilation. “With our first time up to Buffalo and Boston, the Armageddon will ensue. This tour will be in support of our upcoming third release. Touring will be non-stop for the next couple of years as we plan to cover new ground across the pond as well as within this great mud bowl. We hope to see some old friends as well as meet some new ones so don’t be a stranger and come out and support our venom towards authority.”

Sons of Tonatiuh Interview with Dan Caycedo: Running Red on White Walls

Posted in Features on August 1st, 2013 by JJ Koczan

Though they’ve been around in one incarnation or another since 2008, you could probably argue that Atlanta sludge metallers Sons of Tonatiuh are still feeling out their mechanics if not their aesthetics. They have two albums out — a 2010 self-titled debut (review here) and 2012’s rousing, Kyle Spence-recorded follow-up, Parade of Sorrow (released on Hydro-Phonic Records) — and over the course of both have shown a propensity for intense pummeling that at times borders on post-metal churn, but through a balance of screams and cleaner vocals establishes an identity of its own. The only holdup for guitarist/vocalist Dan Caycedo has been sorting a lineup with which to deliver said fare.

Over the course of five years, Caycedo has been through three entire rhythm sections — three bassists, three drummers — and a second guitarist. Given that, it’s a wonder Sons of Tonatiuh have been able to get anything out at all. You have to figure it makes sense; sludge doesn’t pay the bills and Caycedo wants to tour as much as his bandmates will allow. It’s a situation that seems to be geared for conflict, but if Caycedo is discouraged, you wouldn’t know it from the hopeful tone in which he speaks of the current incarnation of the band, in which he’s joined by bassist Twitch and drummer Josh. Maybe having the outlet of a song like “Colors Run Red” from Parade of Sorrow is enough to balance it out.

Through it all, Sons of Tonatiuh have managed to keep together a pretty rigorous touring schedule, and as Caycedo continues to settle into working with Twitch and Josh, the band are also putting together a tour for the fall, and recently played with U.S. Christmas and Generation of Vipers in their hometown at 529. That seemed like a good place to start. In the interview that follows, Caycedo gives his impressions of that gig, recounts his hopefully-finished lineup woes, talks about his songwriting process and recording with Spence, who doubles as the drummer in Harvey Milk, being constantly compared to Eyehategod and much more.

The complete Q&A is after the jump. Please enjoy.

Posted in Whathaveyou on May 9th, 2013 by JJ Koczan

Atlanta sludgers Sons of Tonatiuh have announced a run of shows between now and July that’ll see them sharing stages with Torche, Hooded Eagle and more. Their last album, Parade of Sorrow, came out last year on Hydro-Phonic and was recorded by Kyle Spence of Harvey Milk. Their 2010 self-titled debut was reviewed here, and the only bummer about the list of shows is that they’re not coming north again. Maybe next time, but for anyone in the Southeast, dates are below courtesy of the PR wire:

SONS OF TONATIUH: Down-Tuned Sound Savages Announce Spring Tour Dates

Down-tuned sound savages SONS OF TONATIUH will bring their bottom heavy sludge back to the streets this Friday beginning with a show in Atlanta alongside Torche. Comments Caycedo, “The Mayans were wrong… SONS OF TONATIUH are here to show you the way. Through a heavy, dark road of despair and retribution we will pummel our way through the Southeast and beyond with plans to embark on the great big metal bird to the old world, Europe, by the end of 2013. Anyone crazy enough to stand in our way can either join our ranks or have their heads split open from the molten goodness of our tunage. See you on the killing floor.”

Sons of Tonatiuh: New Video, Tour Dates Announced

Posted in Whathaveyou on May 5th, 2011 by JJ Koczan

Some updates are about tours, some updates are about videos, but it takes some real overachievers to give an update that’s about both a video and a tour. Leave it to Atlanta sludge upstarts Sons of Tonatiuh to go the extra mile. Sometimes one just isn’t enough.

Here’s the video for “Consumed,” followed by some into that’s maybe cooled off, but still fresh from the PR wire:

Atlanta-based sludge collective, Sons of Tonatiuh, recently unleashed a video for “Consumed,” the third track off their self-titled debut full-length. The video was produced by Apocalypse Productions on their home turf.

Commented drummer Tim Genius: “Do yourself a favor: When making a video, don’t choose the longest possible song you might have…. unless you plan to test your audience’s attention span. That said, we are pleased to announce that our new video for ‘Consumed’ turned out rather awesome. It’s minimalistic and we like it that way. At the very least, it’s now more clear that a Sons of Tonatiuh show does not involve little children and traditional Mexican folk-dance — not always, anyway. Mission accomplished!”

In related news, the band is set to embark on a stretch of spring and summer shows. Confirmed dates thus far include:

05/13 Drunken Unicorn Atlanta, GA w/ Primate, Javelina
05/27 Memphis Hates You Fest @ Hi Tone Memphis, TN
05/28 TBA Jackson, MS
06/02 529 Atlanta, GA w/ Black Skies, Royal Thunder
06/24 Little Hamilton Nashville, TN w/ Across Tundras
06/25 Gutfest Jackson, TN

The band is also working on new tunes for their as-yet-untitled, sure to be pulverizing next full-length which is tentatively slated to be recorded in Athens, Georgia courtesy of Harvey Milk’s resident drum bludgeoner/knob tweaker, Kyle Spence.

Said Genius: “It’s sure to be our best yet! Rest assured that while Kyle is conjuring the ghost of John Bonham, we will be bringing our best Keith Moon to the fine folks of Athens.”

Sons of Tonatiuh’s Vinyl-Ready Pain Delivery System

Posted in Reviews on January 17th, 2011 by JJ Koczan

There isn’t much about Sons of Tonatiuh you can’t see coming from miles away, but then again, I doubt “subtle” was what they were going for in the first place. The Atlanta, Georgia, group’s self-titled debut — originally pressed to vinyl by the band and now available on worthy upstart Hydro-Phonic Records – finds the double-guitar/double-vocal four-piece offering a solid 35 minutes of screamy sludge. It’s uncompromising in its visceral feel, and the eight tracks seem geared more toward abrasive musical ideologies than traditionally structured songwriting, helped by production between rough and natural-sounding.

It’s not a formula that’s never been encountered before, but Sons of Tonatiuh do much of the work of distinguishing themselves in the vocals. Guitarists Dan Caycedo (ex-Leechmilk) and Darby Wilson both contribute blood-curdling screams throughout Sons of Tonatiuh, playing especially well off each other on Side B cut “Oracle.” That’s not to take away from the effectiveness of their riffs, the bass playing of Mike Tunno or Tim Genius’ drumming, but frankly, that’s all stuff we’ve heard, whereas Wilson and Caycedo show the difference between quality screaming as a vocal technique and the “some dude yelling” technique employed by many bands. From the quick-moving start of the record on “To the Throne” to the later doomed plod of “From Ashes,” the two six-stringers take a large role in defining the sound of the band, and the album is all the heavier for it.

Sons of Tonatiuh Announce January Tour

Posted in Whathaveyou on December 21st, 2010 by JJ Koczan

It’s a bold band that tours in January, even if it’s just a run through the South. Nonetheless, Atlanta‘s Sons of Tonatiuh plan to boldly step forth and brave the elements for shows with some killer bands, and if you’re like me and by the middle of January you’re tired of being stuck in the house all the time, the PR wire has a plan it would like you to follow.

“We’ll try and keep the church burning down to a minimum as we continually raise the dead of our ancestors through our witchcraft,” said the band in a collective statement. “So come out see what we’re all about and we’ll promise to deliver a good time.”
