Darsombra Premiere “Call the Doctor” Video in All Time Zones

darsombra

Well, it’s 4:20 somewhere. Today, as you may or may not already know, is April 20. High holiday for stoners, or at very least what would be one if everybody wasn’t just high all the time now anyway. By the way, legal weed sales in Jersey start tomorrow. Kind of jerk move to make it April 21, but whatever.

Anyhoo, about two weeks ago, Darsombra‘s Brian Daniloski — a friendly chap if e’er I’ve encountered one — reached out with what seemed like a fairly crazy idea. The duo — he and Ann Everton — are about to embark on their Spring tour going hither and yon, and to celebrate the day and the impending tour and the release of their upcoming 53-minute maxi-single cassette that, no, is not an album so don’t ask, and they wanted to premiere a video for the song “Call the Doctor.” Well heck, I’m on board for that.

Fine. Thing was, Darsombra weren’t just unveiling a video, which is pretty standard. They wanted to premiere the clip at 4:20PM in every time zone across the planet, so that all peoples in all nations could watch “Call the Doctor” at the appropriate moment on the just-right day and bask in the droner weirdness. It seems to have taken some finagling to make it happen, but they’ve done the thing, and today, you’ll find the clip below.

I haven’t even seen it yet. No clue what’s going on in it, flashing lights, whether it’s safe for work, any of that kind of thing. I’ve got a tab open in my browser with the countdown on for when it’s available in my time zone (Eastern US) and I’m looking forward to it, but if you haven’t watched, as of me writing this sentence, we’re in the same boat. Doesn’t matter. Darsombra‘s shenanigans are good times. If you’ve got friends in Secaucus, let ’em know.

Enjoy:

Darsombra Announce Spring Tour & New Tape Release

Posted in Whathaveyou on March 29th, 2022 by JJ Koczan

Reason #473 to love Darsombra — the ability to put out 50 minutes of music and call it a single. 50 minutes, incidentally, is longer than their last full-length, 2019’s Transmission (review here), which was 43. Granted, the forthcoming “maxi-cassingle” is kind of a hodge-podge of things put together to sell on tour — five weeks in Spring is Darsombra doing like they do — but still. They are a band for whom such boundaries and distinctions hold little meaning. That is, as hinted by the number above, only part of their charm.

Also that I have a release of theirs in the Quarterly Review next week and they’re already doing something new. That’s part of it too.

There are dates to fill in here, and I bet if you asked nicely and had a P.A. handy and some cash to compensate their efforts, Darsombra would totally do a set at your house. You know I’ve wanted to ask, especially as a parent trying to raise my child to be the right kind of weirdo.

This came from Bandcamp, and really I’m just happy to have any excuse to write about Darsombra.

So good for me, I guess:

Happy spring from Darsombra!

We say a huge thank you to everyone who made our last six shows in the southeast happen—you all really came through, and it was an absolute pleasure to hit the stage for you again! We are aiming to hit the road AGAIN this spring Hopefully we’ll get to catch up with you somewhere along our journey out west!

What’s a 5-week spring tour without new music to share with you all? We are happy to announce the upcoming release of our new maxi-cassingle, “Call the Doctor/Nightgarden EP”. You may ask, “what’s a maxi-cassingle?” It’s a single—a cassette-only release of last year’s “Call the Doctor/Nightgarden” digital-only EP—plus a little extra, with a 2020 live recording of our 2012 song “Thunder Thighs”, and a new exclusive track titled “Fill Up The Glass”, both on the B-side. It’s a 50+ minute single, on cassette—hence, maxi-cassingle!

We hope to see you this spring!

Black Lung Sign to Heavy Psych Sounds; New Album Coming Soon

Posted in Whathaveyou on March 17th, 2022 by JJ Koczan

Baltimorean three-piece Black Lung have signed on to release their coming fourth album through Heavy Psych Sounds. After issuing 2019’s Ancients (review here) through Ripple Music and Noisolution and restructuring their lineup, a change in venue of proliferation makes sense. The band has maintained a steady focus on Europe all along, as you can see below in their bio, and considering Heavy Psych Sounds is the foremost heavy imprint on that particular continent, they’re a good match.

For whatever it’s worth, this makes sense to me, and in terms of the label’s roster, I can’t think of a band who approach heavy atmospherics in quite the same way, so all the better. Everybody’s stoked. Me too.

This is the announcement of the announcement. As for the announcement? Well that’s coming soon. March 23 seems about right. Here’s the announcement about it:

black lung

HEAVY PSYCH SOUNDS signed the heavy psych doom band BLACK LUNG for the new album // presale + first track premiere March 23rd!!!

PRESALE + first track premiere: MARCH 23rd

We are so stoked to announce that the heavy psych doom riffers BLACK LUNG has signed a worldwide deal with Heavy Psych Sounds for their new album !!!

SAYS THE BAND:

“We are very excited to start this new chapter of the band by signing to Heavy Psych Sounds. Since I met Gabe almost a decade ago on tour with The Flying Eyes, I’ve been blown away by how HPS has grown into a name brand of the heavy music world through the sheer ambition. During the long pandemic slumber, we’ve been busy at work on the upcoming album and crafting a fresh sound with our first ever bass player, Mac Hewitt. We can’t wait to unleash this new album and new lineup onto the world through our partnership with Heavy Psych Sounds.”

BIOGRAPHY

In the winter of 2014, the trio of Adam Bufano, Elias Schutzman (both founding members of The Flying Eyes) and multi-instrumentalist Dave Cavalier emerged from Baltimore as Black Lung. The band quickly set themselves apart in the crowded field of psych-doom and heavy-blues bands by eschewing a bass guitarist, instead finding the backbone of their sound in the interchange of fuzzed-drenched guitars, deep driving drum beats, and Cavalier’s raw, blues-tinged vocals. Following the release of their self-titled debut in 2014, Black Lung embarked on their first European tour. The tour was capped with a performance at the Rockpalast Crossroads Festival, broadcast on German national television.

In 2016 Black Lung released their sophomore album, See The Enemy, on Noisolution Records. Produced by J. Robbins, guitarist and frontman for post-punk icon Jawbox (and producer for The Sword and Clutch), See The Enemy saw the band building on the strengths of their debut while at times pushing into garage-psych territory in the vein of The Black Keys and Jack White. They followed the release with a headlining European tour, notably appearing at Freak Valley Festival and Desertfest Belgium alongside bands like Graveyard, Dead Meadow and All Them Witches.

After several more years of touring and songwriting, Black Lung returned with Ancients in 2019.Produced by Frank Marchand (producer for The Obsessed), Ancients found the band taking even more adventurous departures from doom and psych-rock tropes. The album was followed by another successful release tour in the EU and in late 2019, guitarist Adam Bufano amiably departed the band. Shortly thereafter, guitarist Dave Fullerton (member of the post-rock trio Deaf Scene) joined the fold only to find the world turned upside down by Covid-19.

Despite the setbacks and ripples of doubt across the whole of the music industry in 2020 and 2021, Black Lung pushed forward with their new lineup and quietly stayed hard at work on their fourth album. For the new release, the band was inspired to leave behind the power trio convention and add bass player Mac Hewitt (ex-The Flying Eyes) into the mix. Produced by J. Robbins and mixed by Kurt Ballou (member of Converge and Grammy winning producer for High On Fire), the new album will drop in 2022 on Heavy Psych Sounds Records.

Grim Reefer Fest Set for April 16 in Baltimore; Lineup Announced

Posted in Whathaveyou on February 1st, 2022 by JJ Koczan

Grim-Reefer-Fest-2022-logo

After cancelation in 2020 and no event in 2021, Grim Reefer Fest returns in 2022 in Baltimore this April with headliners Heavy Temple and a slew of others. If you can’t make it to The Ottobar on April 16 for whatever reason — no judgment here, sometimes you’re busy — they’ve reportedly got some kind of streaming thing in the works, so it’d be killer if that happens, and all the more so since the lineup is so killer. Dirt Woman‘s self-titled was a gem of that wretched pandemic year, and Darsombra are like a joyous UPS of weird — they always deliver.

Some, like Cavern and I think Heavy Temple, are carryovers from the 2020 bill, but of course bands have different plans and so on so it’s not the an exact redux from one year to the other. I’d love to get down there for this one, but even if I end up streaming it, it’s easy to be stoked on the thing.

Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door — reasonable — but I’m not sure on the streaming option pricing, should that come together. In any case, here’s the lineup in all its fucking-a glory:

Grim Reefer Fest 2022 New Poster

GRIM REEFER FEST 2022 – April 16, The Ottobar, Baltimore, MD

We attempted to recreate the lineup of the 2020 fest which was canceled, only a few bands from that list were able to join us but we’re hoping to have any band that was unable to play 2022 join us in future events. Due to a slight fear of having to cancel/reschedule again we opted for primarily local regional bands but we’re still extremely excited about this lineup from start to finish.

When/Where
Sat 4/16/22 at the Ottobar in Baltimore, MD

The lineup (in general order of headlining at the top):
Heavy Temple
Grave Bathers
Darsombra
Haze Mage
Cavern
TEL
Compression
Dirt Woman

The Obelisk Questionnaire: Scott Brenner of Haze Mage

Posted in Questionnaire on December 27th, 2021 by JJ Koczan

scott brenner haze mage

The Obelisk Questionnaire is a series of open questions intended to give the answerer an opportunity to explore these ideas and stories from their life as deeply as they choose. Answers can be short or long, and that reveals something in itself, but the most important factor is honesty.

Based on the Proust Questionnaire, the goal over time is to show a diverse range of perspectives as those who take part bring their own points of view to answering the same questions. To see all The Obelisk Questionnaire posts, click here.

Thank you for reading and thanks to all who participate.

The Obelisk Questionnaire: Scott Brenner of Haze Mage

How do you define what you do and how did you come to do it?

I’m a web developer, bassist (Haze Mage), amateur photographer, and occasional local show booker/promoter. Most of that has just come naturally from my life experiences, personal hobbies, and desire to help support our vast local scene. My band exists because John made a Facebook post saying “I want to drum for a stoner metal band” we responded, started meeting shortly after that and have been playing together ever since! This band has solidified my already long standing appreciation for the vast Baltimore music scene and it’s why we do everything to showcase the local talent with our shows & annual event, Grim Reefer Fest.

Describe your first musical memory.

HFStival ‘99 was the first real concert I remember attending. It was wild for my first show to be a stadium event with a ton of my favorite bands of the time. Experiencing the sights, sounds, and smells of a large show for the first time was an eye opening moment for me. I’ve been hooked on concerts ever since.

Describe your best musical memory to date.

Until recently I would have said opening for Acid King, who is one of my all time favorite bands but we just played our first show in almost two years with some of our favorite bands to a huge crowd and the emotions from that experience are completely unrivaled to anything I’ve experienced. I didn’t truly realize the size of the void in my heart from not seeing or playing shows for so long. We all needed it. It was almost a bit overwhelming to see so many people that we’ve missed for so long and to play for them. Everything about that night was perfect and won’t be forgotten anytime soon.

When was a time when a firmly held belief was tested?

I’m extremely non-religious and pretty much always have been. About 11 years ago I had a pituitary tumor diagnosis and needed to have that removed from my head (really not a fun experience, I don’t recommend it). There was a period before surgery where I contemplated death, God, etc., and perhaps looking for help from some sort of greater space deity but I didn’t and still don’t believe in that and never went down that path. I know that the only things getting me through that situation was the science, trusted doctors, and the will of my own body.

Where do you feel artistic progression leads?

I would say artistic progression leads to exploration and challenging yourself. It’s an important thing to drive yourself to push your own limits, to find your next sound or motif or piece of inspiration, and not just rely on what you’ve already done.

How do you define success?

Setting a goal and achieving it, it’s as simple as that. There will always be things I wish I could’ve done better or differently but that doesn’t make the things I’ve done any less of a success. Even as a musician, playing a show that’s smaller than maybe we would’ve hoped for I would still call it a success because if I’m out there playing for anyone other than myself and if one person is there and enjoyed it then that’s all that matters.

What is something you have seen that you wish you hadn’t?

I’ve seen a pig eat a man. In fact, I’ve seen many pigs eat many men. It was a bloodbath.

In all seriousness though I’ve given this one probably more thought than I should admit and nothing specific really comes to mind. I’ve seen so much good and bad, joyful and sad, and I don’t regret seeing any of it because it’s all helped me become who I am today.

Describe something you haven’t created yet that you’d like to create.

I would like to create a platform for artists to share their shows, music, art, event photos, and live streams that doesn’t suppress everything the way some of the bigger platforms do these days. We should all do more to build our local scenes and keep them thriving.

Also I have a dream about turning the lore and story we’ve written into all of our music into a D&D campaign, because we’re that type of nerds.

What do you believe is the most essential function of art?

To be enjoyed. Not everything has to be inspirational or have deep meaning (sometimes a song about a witch seeing the future in her magic bong doesn’t have that many layers to it) but as long as somebody out there enjoys it, even if it’s just yourself, is all that matters in the end.

Something non-musical that you’re looking forward to?

There’s this bridge between my house and my main route into the city that’s being rebuilt and has been closed for three years now that’s finally going to reopen soon and that’s such a grown-up answer to this question but it’s been a giant pain in the ass and I cannot wait.

Additionally, I’m looking forward to the new season of Curb Your Enthusiasm, more tattoos, the return of the Rattlesnake burrito, and Adam Page winning the AEW World Championship.

Friday Full-Length: Holy Fingers, Holy Fingers II

Posted in Bootleg Theater on October 15th, 2021 by JJ Koczan

Though begun as an instrumental trio, Baltimore’s Holy Fingers took shape as a four-piece when joined by guitarist/vocalist Tracey Buchanan sometime in 2015/2016. I’d love to be more specific, but to be honest with you I don’t know that much about the band. Dave Cannon, Theron Melchior (who wins the Most Metal Name prize for the week) and Josh Weiss would seem to have been jamming and playing live since at least 2011, if indeed it’s been those three the whole time, and in addition to early practice recordings that have since disappeared from the digital ether in which they once resided, they offered up the self-titled Holy Fingers sans-vocals in 2016. There are still some tapes available. I’m thinking about picking one up on principle.

But sometimes you find a band on the internet. My path to Holy Fingers II, which the band released on vinyl in 2018, was I guess straightforward enough. I follow Dave Heumann of Baltimore’s Arbouretum on Twitter — in addition to periodic music stuff and wry observationalism, he’s got a side gig selling fancy teas of various varieties and it’s interesting — and maybe a month ago or a few weeks or whatever it was, he was at an outdoor show somewhere around. He posted what he called a “scene report” for the gig, which showed families on blankets and chairs, a couple elderly people. I don’t know what the event was, but it was open to the public and it looked like an enjoyable way to spend an afternoon/evening if you enjoy stuff like, you know, outside and sunshine.

And playing over by what kind of looked like a barn was Holy Fingers, and they were tearing it up. Now, this was a cellphone video, shot from some distance away from the band, and I still watched it more than once and determined I needed to find out who was playing. The most natural thing to do was ask. Heumann very kindly informed that they were called Holy Fingers and I was off. Fewer than five minutes later I was digging into Holy Fingers II and kicking myself at that special angle I reserve for “how did I miss this”-style shaming. Needless to say, it’s a familiar bruise.

Holy Fingers II was recorded and mixed with Kevin Bernsten at Developing Nations Recording StudioBernsten recently helmedHoly Fingers Holy Fingers II the new Genocide Pact and apparently also builds guitars — and mastered by Pete Lyman at Infrasonic Sound (whose mastering discography includes Sum 41, Bad Brains, Weezer and Dr. Dre, among many, many others). It runs an unassuming 35 minutes and six tracks beginning with the relatively straightforward “The Trees Bowed Deeply and Roared” but offering an immediate sense of breadth upon which the rest of the offering seems only too happy to expand. As much as “Destroying Light” has a bluesy lumber in its intertwining guitar lines, its lyrics are less grounded and add to the post-Grace Slick vibe of the echo behind Buchanan.

Both cuts in the opening duo bring hooks of their own, but the direction Holy Fingers take is quickly headed outward, and “Eternaut” caps side A with duly ethereal presence in the guitar and a more patient, not-quite-moodier-but-not-quite-not landscape. It’s a slow, engrossing build over nearly the first three of the total seven minutes — it’s the longest track on the album — but it’s a journey well worth undertaking for more than just the payoff self-harmonies when they arrive, and one that continues to resonate as side B takes hold. Both “Born to Burn” and “Brittle Wings” hover short of seven minutes, and the fluidity of “Born to Burn” alone makes it a highlight, never mind the melody or airy drift of guitar and the mellow swing bringing just a bit of tension beneath. Enough to let the listener know the fuzzy surge is coming if they’re paying attention, and enough to hypnotize them so they’re not.

Riffier at the outset, “Brittle Wings” feels more declarative in its purpose, but is still able to bring about a forward motion into its own wash, with the vocals cutting through the swirl churning counter-clockwise and moving forward into the textured pastoralia of “Ceremony” itself, which is shorter at 5:20 but willfully broad in its reach and encompassing; weighted psychedelia that seems just to be taking off with the late arrival of a percussive underpinning that soon cuts to silence. Too soon? Maybe. I wouldn’t know from nothing where they might’ve otherwise been headed, but if they wanted to meander for, say, 15 or 20 minutes and extend that jam, after the rest of what they’ve done on Holy Fingers II to that point, my trust has certainly been earned. Maybe next time.

Which brings me to the next thing in the grand litany of information I don’t have about this band — what they’re doing now. Aside from playing that outdoor show that fortunately Heumann filmed a snippet of, and an earlier gig in April, there’s not much to tell from Holy Fingers‘ social media as to what’s been up lately. Of course, even if that info were there, it’s not like they would’ve spent the last 20 months on tour or anything, but if there’s material for a follow-up to this album — a kind of second debut as it is with the four-piece lineup — or any intentions toward recording or getting out now that it’s possible in some minor way, I simply don’t know.

My suspicion, given the fact that the group in some form or other has been around for a decade, is that if they were going to “hit the road,” as it were, it would’ve happened by now somewhere along the line of pre-2020 years. Fine. Further extrapolation tells me that they’re an act who, whatever they want to do, will do it on their own terms. Not every group is willing to pull off a significant lineup/structural revamp after a number of years together, for example, and just as Holy Fingers II finds its own place within heavy psychedelic blues, if they do decide to or have already decided to pursue the project further, it seems reasonable to expect that to happen where and when they see fit.

Fair enough. For today, I’m just glad I got to hear this record. I hope you are too.

Thanks for reading.

I was stuck, stuck, stuck on the above, for too long, this morning. Distractions of irrelevant and relevant press releases, putting up other posts, and so on, kept pulling me away. And something about that “familiar bruise” line felt too indulgent on my part. Especially as a standalone sentence. Voice in my head going, “Way to make it about yourself, dick.” It’s there in the spirit of honesty, but I can’t promise I won’t take it out before the post is live. Maybe just move it? I’ll see if I can live with that.

There. I guess that’s better.

All week, I slept late. I don’t think I got up before six once. It was kind of incredible. And with The Pecan in school all five days, I managed to get my shit done as much as I ever do before my brain turns to mush and I can’t work anymore and still have time to shower every day before the bus brought him home. You have to understand, this is amazing to me. If it sounds mundane, it is, but a luxuriousness of lifestyle with which I have not been acquainted in some time. Years.

Can’t say next week will be the same, but I’m glad to take what I got. Special thanks to The Patient Mrs. I woke up at seven-fucking-thirty this morning. Can you imagine? Sure, I missed posting that Weedpecker track on time, but no one seems any worse for the wear.

Next week I think I’m reviewing the Monolord record? Maybe that’s the week after and Blackwater Holylight is next week? One or the other. I’m also doing a FUNERAL premiere on Monday, which in my mind is worth the all-caps I just put it in given that band’s genre-defining legacy. Season of Mist hit me up for that this week and I restructured the whole week around it. I do not expect anyone who reads this site regularly to give a shit — death-doom stuff always seems to fall flat compared to other styles I post about — but hell, it’s important to me and it’s my site, so if I embarrass myself with a miniscule response on social media, at least it’s something I got to do once. Like that time I did a premiere for Slough Feg.

How about Kadavar and Elder, huh? That’ll be interesting.

Next week, I also turn 40 and might go to an indoor show in Connecticut. Curse the Son, Geezer and Kind. It’d be my first indoor gig “back” since the pandemic started and I’d like to be among friends.

On a more staggering note, I’ve been invited to go to Sweden next month and if that country opens its borders to US travelers on Nov. 1, I’m absolutely going to do so. Keeping fingers crossed and all that. The possibility seems unreal to me, and it might turn out to be exactly that.

I wish you a great and safe weekend. Please have fun, watch your head. Hydrate. I’ll be back Monday with that Funeral premiere and a bunch of news I’m already behind on.

Much love. Thanks for reading.

Darsombra Announce West Coast Touring Starting Oct. 1

Posted in Whathaveyou on September 22nd, 2021 by JJ Koczan

Everybody’s favorite dronefreak two-piece Darsombra return to the road headed west to begin a round of shows on Oct. 1 in probably-already-snowing-there Minnesota. They’ll nobly be bringing their one-of-a-kind weirdness to venues and what I’ll assume will also be a couple show-up-and-where-can-I-plug-this-in kind of spots, as they’re wont to do. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen Brian Daniloski and Ann Everton do their thing in-person, but the creative freedom they embody remains admirable, and they posted the Call the Doctor / Nightgarden 25-minute two-songer back in April to prove it.

A new full-length? Sure, one of these days, maybe. Honestly, I’m not sure why they don’t just record every show they play and put that out, improving their way into a discography in the thousands over however many years, but we live in a dimension of many yet-unexplained phenomena, so I’ll just go ahead and plop that on the long list of shit I don’t know and roll along anyhow. Blerp blerp. Also I kind of feel like a square thinking of them doing something so mundane as an album at this point. So suburban, this one.

They posted dates on social media and the algorithm very kindly presented it to me thusly:

darsombra (photo by Elgaroo Brenza)

Surprise! Darsombra is about to go on tour again!

For the month of October, we will be making our way from the east coast to the Pacific northwest and back again. It’s been almost two years since we’ve embarked on a long tour, and touring sure looks a lot different now. There will be both outdoor and indoor performances, as well as sporadic pop-up shows. We will be taking measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 as we travel, such as being fully vaccinated, masking, and regular testing. Please check with the venue in your area, as there will be COVID protocols in place at many of them.

The Deviant Collective: Two-Night Event in Baltimore Announced for August

Posted in Whathaveyou on May 24th, 2021 by JJ Koczan

Outdoors all ages! Take your children to see Caustic Casanova and then put them to bed before Yatra or Solace go on. Ah, but that’s just night two of The Deviant Collective, a two-dayer scheduled for Aug. 13 and 14 in Baltimore, Maryland. Looking to leave lockdown in style? For those of us on the Eastern Seaboard, this might be the way to do it, as Blackseed Services out of Pittsburgh and Zentagram — soon to be formerly of MD — will present a monster lineup in The Depot and outside Oliver Brewing that boasts not only the aforementioned, but Horseburner, Foghound, Howling Giant, Spiral Grave and more and more and more.

The indoor portion (night one) has limited capacity, so if you’re feeling tentative about rejoining such togetherness-minded settings, wear your mask and consider this a way to test the waters. Both nights look stellar, as does the Bill Kole artwork that even with the cat I can’t help but think of as a dogwhistle to Man’s Ruin Records in a righteous update of Frank Kozik‘s once-upon-a-time label logo. Badass either way.

And that applies all around, not just to the art. Here’s the info:
