Roadburn 2016 Announces Ticket On-Sale Date; Adds Amenra, The Skull, Green Carnation, and More to Lineup

Posted in Whathaveyou on September 10th, 2015 by JJ Koczan

Much good news coming out of the Roadburn 2016 camp today, and multifaceted. First, tickets will be on sale on Oct. 2. That’s a good one to know. Second, Becky Cloonan has been announced as the official artist of Roadburn 2016, and her poster for the fest, which you can see below, rules. Would and probably will look very cool on a t-shirt. Third, the lineup has grown even richer and broader, from neofolk to death metal to proggy extremity with the likes of Of the Wand and the Moon, Amenra, The Skull and Green Carnation added.

The Skull being added isn’t much of a surprise after the initial announcement of their Spring 2016 European tour last month, but confirmation is always nice anyhow, and a return from Amenra is most welcome. I always dug those Green Carnation records too, so hopefully Tchort brings out some of that stuff from his weirdo prog-death outfit. There’s a lot, and I mean a lot to get to, so I won’t delay.

To the PR wire:

Day tickets for Sunday only will be available, priced at €39. A limited number of individual day tickets for the remaining days will be released for sale at a later date.

NEW LINEUP ADDITIONS

With a sonic arsenal behind them that covers a broad spectrum of emotive intricacies, AMENRA are perfectly placed to showcase their diversity at Roadburn 2016. The performances at Roadburn are currently the only planned live outings for AMENRA in 2016: an acoustic set, with an expanded band of musicians, immediately before Neurosis on the Saturday, and again taking to the main stage on the Sunday night to play an electric set.

Breathing new life into one of doom’s most enduring legacies, THE SKULL will also play Roadburn 2016 twice. On Thursday, April 14 THE SKULL will perform songs from For Those Which Are Asleep (out on Tee Pee records), plus classic Trouble, 90s era tracks. The following day, the band will hark back to Trouble’s Metal Blade years, only playing songs from Psalm 9, The Skull and Run To The Light.
To find out more about THE SKULL at Roadburn 2016, click HERE.

Norwegian avant-garde progsters GREEN CARNATION will perform Light of Day, Days of Darkness in its entirety on Sunday, April 17. 2016 marks the fifteen year anniversary of this epic, prog, avant-metal masterpiece. “The people involved in this are all buzzing”, says founder / guitarist Tchort, “Light of Day, Day of Darkness is a very special album in many different ways for so many people, and we are looking forward to start rehearsing this beast live.”
To find out more about GREEN CARNATION at Roadburn 2016, click HERE.

We’re elated to announce the international return of Belgium’s legendary riders of the apocalypse, LA MUERTE, at Roadburn 2016. LA MUERTE’s massacre thrashed Europe and the UK in the 80’s, resulting in a John Peel Session at the BBC, full pages of interviews in Melody Maker, and, infamously, bomb threats in Paris by extremists French Catholics for the track Ecoute cette Prière, before eventually disbanding in 1994. They will make their highly anticipated return at the 013 venue, for eager fans at Roadburn.

Denmark’s OF THE WAND AND THE MOON has become a leading staple of contemporary neofolk; albums such as 2011’s The Lone Descent are widely regarded as masterpieces. Heavily thriving on Nordic mythological influences, with lyrics mainly in Danish and English, Kim Larsen’s melancholic, often acoustic take on the genre paints devastating portraits of irreconcilable loss, love and death in a traditional romantic sense.
OF THE WAND AND THE MOON will play Incubate Festival in Tilburg this month. To find out more about their performance at Roadburn 2016, click HERE.

Over the past two decades DER BLUTHARSCH AND THE INFINITE CHURCH OF THE LEADING HAND’s Albin Julius found his alchemical, musical perfection: parts krautrock, psychedelia, and dark experimentalism. Theatrical and tense, sonically dark and perverse, ritualistic and confusing – don’t miss out on Albin Julius’ mushroom aesthetics on Thursday, April 14, when DER BLUTHARSCH AND THE INFINITE CHURCH OF THE LEADING HAND will celebrate their 20th anniversary. To find out more about their performance at Roadburn 2016, click HERE.

Uncompromising, unsettling, utterly confounding, and heavily funeralizing Black Metal, London’s LYCHGATE – with Esoteric’s Greg Chandler on vocals – know how to craft a vibe. Let LYCHGATE drag you deeply down the rabbit hole on Friday, April 15, when they play An Antidote for the Glass Pill in full, and employ the church-organ to full effect on stage for the first time ever.
To find out more about LYCHGATE at Roadburn 2016, click HERE.

CHAOS ECHOES create an aesthetically complex body of work that sweeps death metal into a black hole of deconstructed improvisations. To find out more about their performance at Roadburn 2016, click HERE.

BECKY CLOONAN

We at Roadburn are ecstatically proud to unveil the official artwork for Roadburn 2016, lovingly wrought by acclaimed comic-book illustrator BECKY CLOONAN – who will be following in the illustrious footsteps of such predecessors as Michel Langevin, Costin Chioreanu, and Arik Roper.

CLOONAN’s mix of clean, bold lines mixed with subtle intricacies, Manga-influenced angularity and artful use of chiaroscuro and colour has marked her out as an artist to pay serious attention to. Having provided stunning illustrations for a new edition of Bram Stoker’s immortal Dracula, collaborated with My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way on the art for his Dark Horse miniseries The True Lives Of The Fabulous Killjoy, and become the first woman to draw DC’s Batman – CLOONAN has already left an indelible mark on the comic book world

Her intricate linework, art-deco sensibilities and dark psychedelic edge make her the perfect match for Roadburn, with her comics background providing a fresh edge to the Roadburn aesthetic. She’ll be providing the official poster art for Roadburn 2016 along with four individual day posters – yet to be revealed – and taking part in the official exhibition of art at Projectspace Tilburg – Gust van Dijk.

To read more about BECKY CLOONAN at Roadburn 2016, click HERE.

Roadburn Festival takes place between 14 – 17 April 2016 at the 013 venue, in Tilburg, The Netherlands. Ticket announcements will follow in due course.

Amenra to Release Split with Madensuyu; New Video Posted; Acoustic Shows Announced

Posted in Whathaveyou on August 11th, 2014 by JJ Koczan

Many doings in the camp of Belgian post-metallers Amenra, it would seem. The six-piece outfit will release a new split with Madensuyu on Consouling Sounds, they’ve announced acoustic shows in September, and they have a new video for their acoustic version of the track “Razoreater.” The original, very-much-plugged, version of “Razoreater” appeared on Amenra‘s 2008 outing, Mass IIII, and their new split will be one of four released so far in 2014 — they also have a live record out — so it’s safe to say Amenra are keeping busy. Their last full-length, Mass V, came out in 2012 on Neurot Recordings.

The PR wire brings tales of recent doings, and of course that video, which is fittingly gloomy:

Belgium’s Amenra Release New Music Video | Announce New Split Release

Belgium post-metal/sludge outfit AMENRA has just released a new music video for the acoustic version of their track “Razoreater”, which was directed by Nathalie Teirlinck of independent production company Savage Film.

The live recording was recorded by Lander Cluyse at Hearse Studio, Belgium and mastered by Chris Common (Isis, Chelsea Wolfe) at Twin Hills, US and is set to appear on a new picture split 10” with fellow countrymen Madensuyu to be released by Consouling Sounds this Friday, August 15th.

Pre-orders are still available at the following location: http://consouling.be/album/amenra-madensuyu-split-10-picture-disc

Meanwhile, Amera will play a string of acoustic shows in September throughout Belgium and Germany. More details will be announced soon.

Amenra to Release Live II in June

Posted in Whathaveyou on April 30th, 2014 by JJ Koczan

I’m not sure if Neurot Recordings is going to handle a North American release for Amenra‘s new My Proud Mountain live album, Live II, which is due out in June. The two imprints have worked together before, on the Townes Van Zandt tributes, Songs of Townes Van Zandt Vol. I and II, but I’ve yet to come across concrete word one way or another on the Amenra. If you’ll recall, Neurot released the Belgian post-sludgers’ last studio offering, 2012’s Mass V, so I can’t think of a reason they wouldn’t want to also handle the live record, but I wouldn’t want to assume. Figured for those in Europe and those willing to shell out for imports, sure word of the release through My Proud Mountain was better than nothing.

Amenra also have a relatively-new video and some European tour dates that you can check out below, courtesy of the PR wire:

AMENRA to release live album via My Proud Mountain in June, plus Willy Vanderperre video collaboration made public

The recording is the live audio from their MASS V release show of last year, mixed and mastered by Billy Anderson and released in beautiful handmade screen-printed covers. In case you missed the news, AMENRA recently teamed up with top fashion photographer Willy Vanderperre and director of photography Nicolas Karakatsanis for a stunning video which features the band stripped of all that we know of them, and you can watch and share via the Church Of Ra YouTube channel…

Vanderperre has worked with a startling array of individuals, from Kate Moss to Kanye West, but his encounter with AMENRA sees both parties break formation to form a hesitant, powerful and revealing union. The video, set to À Mon Âme from their most recent album, MASS V, may not be what you have come to expect from the cult crafters of discordance – but what are AMENRA if not masters of defying expectation?

Says CHVE of the collaboration; “It is not at all like the sort of visuals we usually present, it is more a case study, or a visual interpretation of the band, a little piece of concept art, if you will. The idea they [Willy Vanderperre and director of photography Nicolas Karakatsanis] had was stripping us of everything we had – ‘what if we took it all away from them?’, ‘what if we took them from their comfort zone?’. No shadows or darkness to hide in, dark imagery, props or metaphors or symbols to use.”…

He continues…”Compare it to what we sometimes or mostly do with our music – stick to the mere necessary, take a minimalistic approach of a whole. What do we really need? To create a certain ‘feeling’ of emotion. For us, it was an extremely interesting cooperation. We normally keep our guard extremely high, never give something out of our hands, to keep it as close to our skin as humanly possible – that’s exactly what they did as well, literally…It was awkward, uneasy, and very confronting for us to see, yet one of the most interesting things we did lately, and an honour for us to be working with such talented and inspiring people. ‘Under a watchtower of punishing light.’”

Don’t forget that AMENRA are on the road and will soon head to the UK for two festival appearances, including Temples Festival this weekend. Here are the remaining dates…

LIVE DATES
SAT 3/05: TEMPLES FESTIVAL, BRISTOL UK w/ Neurosis
SAT 10/05: BTR FESTIVAL, LONDON UK w/ Cult of luna

Posted in Whathaveyou on March 26th, 2013 by JJ Koczan

Crossing genre lines over a course of three days in Wroclaw, Poland, the fifth annual Asymmetry Festival is set to take place at the Centennial Hall from May 2 to May 4. The lineup includes native Polish acts — even Vader get a slot — alongside a host of others from around Europe and the US, from Ufomammut to Melvins Lite, Agalloch to razor-happy Norwegian black metallers Shining. I don’t know how many people reading this are going to make it to Wroclaw for the fest when it kicks off, but sometimes I just like to post about stuff happening in other places to remind myself it’s a big world and awesomeness isn’t relegated to any one geographic region or other.

Dig the Malleus poster and fest info below:

The 5th edition of Asymmetry festival will run from Thursday May 2 to Saturday May 4 2013, at the Centennial Hall in Wroclaw, Poland,

Amenra Post New Video for “Boden – Spijt” from Mass V; Tour Dates Announced

Posted in Bootleg Theater on November 6th, 2012 by JJ Koczan

You know how it is. Sometimes you wake up naked in the woods just as the heavy part kicks in on an Amenra song. You start to wonder around slowly and find a potato sack dress, so you put it on and go down to the stream to brush your teeth or take a hobo bath or whathaveyou. But hey, here’s a dead bird, so you pick it up and lay down with it on your belly and it takes about nine minutes and that’s the video for Amenra‘s “Boden – Spijt.” There you have it.

The track comes off Amenra‘s Neurot Recordings debut, Mass V, which is expected to plant a heavy-foot down on Nov. 27. All kidding aside, the song is pretty killer and worth checking out. Find it below, followed by the lyrics and the latest off the PR wire:

AMENRA Release New Video From Pending Neurot Recordings Debut

After stealing the show at Damnation Festival in Leeds this past weekend, AMENRA are firmly focused on the release of their new studio album Mass V which will see the cold light of day later this month on November 27th via Neurot Recordings.

Having recently showcased their album opener “Dearborn and Buried” via their official Soundcloud page, we explode into the new week with the album’s second track “Boden,” complete with lyrics and accompanying video.

“Boden” lyrics:
carry within
a fear
that blossoms on skin
forever alone
sorrow says
bury my bones
carry within
regret
for everything
tear old pain away
I renounce this day and
I renounce every wound
made in my flesh
made by my flesh
are you awake? what did you see?
I’m a sudden hissing,
right behind your ear.
a white noise
but it’s quiet now
I am reason
I am fear
inflict.
I call out
and you fear me
I call out
and all the brothers in the world they hear me
but the pain remains the same

Roadburn Pre-Sale Info Announced; Elder, Amenra, Process of Guilt Added to Lineup

Posted in Whathaveyou on September 5th, 2012 by JJ Koczan

More daydream fodder for those of us who’d make our escapist Roadburn fantasies a reality in 2013. You know, as I watched Elder‘s consciousness-shattering performance at SHoD, I thought to myself, “These guys would kill at Roadburn,” so I’m glad to see they’ll have the opportunity to do so. Neurot acquisitions Amenra will take part as well, presumably with a new album out or on the way, and Process of Guilt too.

Pre-sale info is also included, so make sure you pay close attention to the following:

ROADBURN FESTIVAL 2013 TICKET PRE-SALES START THURSDAY, OCTOBER 4TH AT 2012 AT 20:30 CET; PRE-SALES PARTY AT THE 013 VENUE (NL) WITH SWITCHBLADE AND BUNKUR; AMENRA, ELDER AND PROCESS OF GUILT CONFIRMED FOR ROADBURN FESTIVAL 2013

This year, we are doing things a bit differently in terms of pre-sales. Tickets for Roadburn Festival 2013 will go on sale Thursday, 4 October 2012 at 20:30 CET instead of late November as usual.

The anticipation for next year’s festival has been growing exponentially with each new band announcement, and we have been inundated with questions about tickets. Ultimately, we agreed it would be cruel and unusual punishment to make you wait until the end of November, hence the decision to move up the ticket pre-sales for Roadburn 2013 to 4 October 2012. Circle this date on your calendar, set your alarm and get ready to score your tickets!

You might remember that ticket prices for the 2012 Roadburn Festival rose due to higher taxes imposed on cultural events here in the Netherlands. In the meantime, certain changes have been made and we are pleased to report that tickets for Roadburn 2013 will be slightly less expensive. We wanted to translate that into good news for you, our beloved Roadburn veterans and neophytes alike, as opposed to raising ticket prices again. As most of you know, it was no fun announcing the price hike last year.

Three-day tickets are available for 165,00 euros; four-day tickets are 185,00 euros, and single tickets for The Afterburner are 32,50 euros. The prices listed do not include processing fees. Please note: one-day tickets are not available for the Thursday, Friday or Saturday Roadburn dates.

The majority of Roadburners live outside the Netherlands, which is why ticket pre-sales will start at 20:30 CET. This should be convenient for most time zones. Apologies to our friends in Oceania who will have to wake up early (or just stay up late)!

For everyone in the Netherlands and Belgium, we are aware that your local ticket outlets might not be open when pre-sales start, which is one reason why we are throwing a Roadburn Festival pre-sales party at the 013 venue in Tilburg (NL) on 4 October 2012. Admission if free. During the event, you will be able to purchase a maximum of two paper tickets for Roadburn Festival 2013. Guaranteed!

Just think: no pacing outside a ticket outlet in the freezing rain, no anxiety attack when the guy at the counter hands you two tickets to some eurotrash dance party at a football stadium, and no homicidal urges when the new kid at the shop mumbles: “huh, something’s wrong with the printer…”

Of course, the other reason for the pre-sales party is that it will be a blast! We have invited Switchblade and Bunkur to provide the soundtrack. Both bands have been on the Roadburn radar for quite a while, and this is the perfect opportunity to showcase their riff-heavy explorations. Also, Roadburn’s artistic director/promoter Walter Hoeijmakers will be on hand to share the latest festival updates.

Grab your tickets, bask in the heaviness and get ready to start the official countdown to Roadburn 2013!

Sinners, liars, thieves and heathens: absolution is at hand! Enter the black church of AMENRA on Friday, April 19th in Het Patronaat in Tilburg, Holland. Achieve a state of delirious bliss as the gut-wrenching screams and deafening droning riffs alter your reality, purifying your soul and sending you into paroxysms of ritual ecstasy. Are these post-metal behemoths from West-Flanders (Belgium) demons or demigods? You decide. More info on Amenra here: http://wp.me/p1m0FP-6i5

It is with great pleasure that we announce the addition of Boston heavy psych rockers Elder to the Roadburn Festival 2013 roster at the Het Patronaat venue on April 20th.

More info on Elder here: http://wp.me/p1m0FP-6ia

We are very pleased to bring Portugal’s Process of Guilt to the 2013 Roadburn Festival on Saturday, April 20 at the 013 venue in Tilburg, Holland.

More info on Process of Guilt here: http://wp.me/p1m0FP-6in

Roadburn Festival 2013, including Electric Wizard’ s curated event, Godflesh playing Pure in its entirety for the first time ever, Neige (Alcest) as Artist-in-Residence and Die Kreuzen reunion among others, will run for four days from Thursday, April 18th to Sunday, April 21st, 2013 (the traditional Afterburner event) at the 013 venue in Tilburg, Holland.

Please visit www.roadburn.com for more info.
