Elder Finish Recording New Album
Mostly-Berlin-based progressive heavy rock forerunners Elder have finished the recording of their next album. Or they’ve “mostly” finished anyhow, though I’m not entirely sure what that means. More keyboards? Overdubs? Both? Neither? In any case, they worked with producer Linda Gerdes at Clouds Hill on the offering, which it’s nearly impossible to imagine will be out before next year, and while we’re making assumptions, let’s figure it’ll be out through Stickman Records and Armageddon Shop, hmm?
Elder‘s sixth full-length is sure to be a highlight of 2022, and when it arrives, it will be the follow-up to 2020’s Omens (review here), which marked the first release with drummer Georg Edert (also of Gaffa Ghandi) in the band alongside founding guitarist/vocalist Nick DiSalvo, bassist Jack Donovan, and guitarist/keyboardist Mike Risberg, the latter of whom made his own first appearance on 2017’s Reflections of a Floating World (review here).
The band’s sound always manages progression from one release to the next, so that won’t necessarily be a surprise — though Omens‘ all-in prog sensibilities seemed to throw some listeners for a loop — but as they couple that with a more solidified lineup, it will be interesting to hear what they come up with and how the dynamic has shifted.
A two-year split between albums is on the shorter end for Elder, but not unheard of, and certainly the inability to tour owing to a global pandemic is a factor there. Recall also that earlier in 2021, DiSalvo released a debut album with the solo-project Delving, Hirschbrunnen (review here), of mellower instrumental explorations. Clearly it’s been a productive plague for him as a songwriter. Nice to have something come out of it.

Can’t say yet when you can expect to hear it – pretty much every link in the record making chain is still FUBAR at the moment – but you know we’ll keep ya posted.
