El Perro Announce February West Coast Shows

Posted in Whathaveyou on December 24th, 2021 by JJ Koczan

At this point it’s been a minute since El Perro‘s debut album, Hair of El Perro, was announced back in August. It’s also going to be a minute until that same record finally sees release in April 2022. Whether you chalk that up to holding it back until the band can tour in a bigger way — they did a run in August as well, so maybe not that — or the simple harsh reality of vinyl pressing delays, it’s a substantial stretch of time to sit on a release in any case. I do not doubt that by the time Parker Griggs and company hit the road in February, they’ll be itching to get out. Likewise the folks who show up at the gigs, if winter viral surge predictions are to be considered.

Nonetheless, my position on El Perro remains as it has been since the band was announced in 2019. I’m looking forward to hearing the record whenever it shows up. Nice when things can be simple like that.

EL PERRO announce USA tour February 2022!

EL PERRO is a brand new band led by PARKER GRIGGS of RADIO MOSCOW

EL PERRO – FEBRUARY USA TOUR DATES
2/3/22 Count’s Vamp’d Rock Bar & Grill/Las Vegas
2/04/22 Yucca Tap Room/Tempe
2/05/22 Permanent Records Roadhouse/Los Angeles
2/06/22 Transplants Brewing Company & Live/Palmdale
2/16/22 Bottom of the Hill/San Francisco
2/17/22 The High Water Mark/Portland
2/18/22 Funhouse/Seattle
2/19/22 The Shredder/Boise
2/20/22 Garage on Beck/Salt Lake City

EL PERRO is a brand new band led by guitarist/vocalist/songwriter/producer Parker Griggs of RADIO MOSCOW. The sound contains elements that fans of Radio Moscow will recognize, but this is rock music with a new, fresh spin and feel. The band’s debut album, “Hair Of El Perro”, takes heavy psychedelic rock as a starting point but jams into more syncopated territory, spicing its sound with Latin rhythms and hints of Funkadelic-style grooves. You could say that EL PERRO plays psychedelic funk rock, and you wouldn’t be wrong.

Beside Parker Griggs, EL PERRO also includes former Radio Moscow drummer Lonnie Blanton, bassist Shawn Davis, and guitarist Holland Redd.

El Perro Announce Debut LP Hair Of; Stream “Black Days”

Posted in Whathaveyou on August 11th, 2021 by JJ Koczan

El Perro will release their debut album, Hair Of, early next year on Alive Records. Details on the record are pretty scarce at this point, which is fair since it’s August, but a lead single, “Black Days,” is streaming now, and there are West Coast tour dates already in progress. For those who’ve been keeping up, the band formed in 2019 by Radio Moscow guitarist/vocalist Parker Griggs were all set to head to Europe last Spring to make their debut there, playing alongside the likes of Colour Haze and doing festivals and blah blah pandemic. This is their first tour — and they’re out with Spirit Mother, who are awesome — though they’ve done shows here and there on the way.

I was fortunate enough to hear a few demos from the band and to interview Griggs to talk about starting the project — at that point I was happy just to learn who else was in the band — and the boogie runs deep, the fuzz runs hot and the funk am delic. “Black Days” would seem to represent the different sides of the band well, and if this is a ‘Single Edit,’ one can imagine where they space it out amid the expected classic-style shred.

Info and what may or may not be the Hair Of cover art came down the PR wire:

EL PERRO – debut single available now for streaming everywhere!

Debut album “Hair Of” due early 2022.

EL PERRO is a brand new band led by guitarist/vocalist/songwriter/producer Parker Griggs. The band’s sound contains elements that fans of his band Radio Moscow will recognize, but this is rock music with a new, fresh spin and feel. El Perro takes heavy psychedelic rock as a starting point and adds the additional instrumentation of a second guitar and a percussionist, pushing the music into more syncopated territory, spiced with Latin rhythms and hints of Funkadelic-style grooves. You could say that El Perro plays psychedelic funk rock, and you wouldn’t be wrong.

In late 2019, hungry to do something fresh, Parker Griggs decided to put together a five piece band, with members including former Radio Moscow drummer Lonnie Blanton, bassist Shawn Davis, and guitarist Holland Redd. With the addition of a percussionist the El Perro sound and style coalesced.

EL PERRO USA Summer Tour with Spirit Mother:
• August 10 @ 7th St. Entry — Minneapolis, MN

• August 20 @ Eighteen Ten Ojeman — Houston, TX
• August 21 @ The Far Out Lounge & Stage — Austin, TX
• August 24 @ Launchpad — Albuquerque, NM

Dirty Streets on Tour Till June; Euro Dates Announced

Posted in Whathaveyou on March 11th, 2016 by JJ Koczan

dirty streets

Next weekend, Memphis heavy blues rockers Dirty Streets head to SXSW, where they’ll hop on the Bongzilla tour for the night and join the formidable ranks of Bongzilla, Black Cobra, Kings Destroy, Lo-Pan and Author and Punisher. In August, they’ll be playing Psycho Las Vegas (details here). Most of the time in between, they’ll spend on the road supporting their late-2015 album, White Horse (review here), which was released by Alive Records and reaffirmed the trio’s commitment to quality songwriting and classic-style craftsmanship. They already toured the US alongside Spirit Caravan, so this time around they’re headed to Europe for a slew of shows in Switzerland, Spain, France, Germany and the Netherlands.

That’ll take Dirty Streets from April 7 through to May 7, but they’ve got shows booked for June in the States as well. Nothing like keeping busy. Dates (and there are many of them) follow, courtesy of the PR wire:

GIVEAWAY: Win Two Tickets to Radio Moscow’s Live Album Recording Dec. 10

Posted in Features on December 1st, 2015 by JJ Koczan

radio-moscow-(Photo-by-Toni-Francois)

HOW TO ENTER: Leave a comment on this post (any comment will do) and make sure you fill in the form with your email address so I can contact you if you win.

With some giveaways, I feel like they need a little bit more of a push. This one, I shouldn’t even have to do more than say, “Two tickets, Radio Moscow, L.A., Dec. 10″ and be done with it.

That’s the prize, but of course there’s more to it than that, since the show, which will indeed take place Dec. 10 at The Satellite in Los Angeles, is the first of two nights on which the trio will record their new live 2LP, set to release next year through Alive Records.

How much of an event is Radio Moscow making a live record? If you’d seen them before, you wouldn’t need to ask, but even if you haven’t seen them, suffice it to say that if they manage to capture even half the energy and chemistry they bring to the stage onto those platters, it’ll be an impact that could resonate for a long time to come.
Here’s the label’s announcement of the doings:

radio moscow show posterAlive Records announces a new album by Radio Moscow to be recorded live at the Satellite in Los Angeles over two nights in December (Thursday and Friday the 10th and 11th). The release will be issued in all formats, including 2-LP vinyl with a gatefold and a poster.

Doors: 8:30 PM
Show: 9:00 PM

with Jared James Nichols, Behold The Brave

Obviously, if you win, I can’t fly your lucky ass to L.A. for the gig — if I could fly anyone, it’d be me — so if you’re entering, make sure you can get there. And please note that, as always, I have no interest in spamming, keeping email address or any of that crap. I just want to be able to let you know if you win.

And good luck, by the way. Contest ends Tuesday, Dec. 8, and the winner’s name (with a plus one) will be added to the list for the show.

Thanks to Radio MoscowAlive Records and Fly PR for allowing me to host this giveaway.

Radio Moscow to Record New Double-Live Album Next Month in L.A.

Posted in Whathaveyou on November 11th, 2015 by JJ Koczan

There are few spectacles I’ve witnessed in rock and roll capable of producing as much raw joy as watching Radio Moscow live. That sounds like hyperbole, but I mean it. Given the opportunity last year to watch the trio play no fewer than 20 sets, I watched all 20, and each time was better than the night before it. Even that night the bass drum broke, they were stellar. I have two complaints when it comes to their recording a double-live album in Los Angeles next month for a 2016 release on Alive Records: First, I won’t be there to see it. Second, it should cost more than $12 to get in.

Beyond that, the news is all good. And here it is:

They have toured the U.S. and Europe with acts like Graveyard, Witchcraft, Joe Bonamassa, Pentagram and Nebula.
