Chris Forsyth to Release Evolution Here We Come Aug. 26; Opening Track Streaming

There’s a not-insignificant bio for Chris Forsyth‘s new album, Evolution Here We Come — and I didn’t write it, which feels like a selling point — though a fair amount of what you need to know is given in the title of the eight-minute album opener streaming now ahead of the record’s Aug. 26 release. Set to issue through No QuarterEvolution Here We Come is led off by “Experimental and Professional,” which indeed seems to embody both ideas, layering weirdo bips and bloops over a steady rolling instrumentalist jam, plotted, hypnotic and ranging at the same time. Perhaps in the subtle sweep of the underlying progression there’s some shade of labelmates’ Endless Boogie‘s got-momentum-good-ride-it-forever ethos, but Forsyth keeps varied company as you can see in the number of guests the album includes, and that’s bound to result in a fair bit of individualized out-there vibing.

So it goes on “Experimental and Professional,” and there is still room for something of a sans-vocal hook to repeat a few times before the track stops cold and lets the residual synth and effects carry it out. The whole thing is a blend of straightforward and got-bent, and while I’m not holding out much hope for human evolution in general, Forsyth‘s progressive creative mindset has never been in question. It’s been a few years since I’ve kept up — his last LP was in 2019, as you can read below — but I sure as hell don’t regret popping this one on this morning.

Evolution marks Forsyth’s first studio record since All Time Present (2019). It’s a tighter effort – with its seven tracks running just over 50 minutes. Forsyth says: “I think it represents a major shift in my work, and at the same time, it’s probably the most deeply rooted project I’ve done, blessed by the presence of friends and collaborators – each of whom has been an inspiration for me.” Forsyth says the album “is about change and our ultimate helplessness – as individuals, as artists, as societies – in the face of it.”

In working with Dave Harrington he says, “I was hoping to make rock music whose surface reads something like electronic music. I don’t pretend to know what the future holds, but, for better or worse, change is the only sure thing.”

Since the release All Time Present Forsyth expanded his SolarLive series releasing with vinyl pressings (including collaborations with Harrington and Garcia Peoples) via his Algorithm Free record label. He will be on tour this fall, with dates coming soon.
