Redwood to Release Self-Titled Debut EP July 22
Note that in the video below for the pre-release single from Redwood‘s self-titled debut EP, “High Speed Tripper,” you don’t actually see the (entire) face of anyone in the band. It’s an anonymous project, so that stands to reason. If you follow the transitions from one instrument to the next for a while, you can start to figure out a little bit about the band, which is based in California much like the actual redwoods and which will release the EP on July 22.
All told the release is comprised of five songs and while there’s a bit of shade to its atmosphere, the crux of “High Speed Tripper” is in a weighted, relatively straightforward groove with tripped-out guitar layered over top. Vocals are throaty in a blues style but relatively buried to let the music surrounding feel that much bigger, and when the ending solo takes hold, you’re left wishing the track went longer than its just-under-five-minutes. Dude seems to have a pretty cool car as well, though I say that mostly for his stickers as I’m not really big on automobiles.
Then plan as I’m made to understand it is release Redwood in a limited-to-40 CD pressing — an act after my heart — and then go from there. I don’t know if there’s much hype around this stuff yet — there seems to be so much politics in Bandcamp tags and shares and all that crap these days — but “High Speed Tripper” is a cool blend and the roll of “Ponder,” which follows and has also been posted for streaming, reaffirms what works about it.
