Mexicoma Premiere “Earth Mother”; Kalpa LP Coming July 1

Majestic Mountain Records announced late last week that it had picked up Umeå, Sweden, six-piece Mexicoma for a new album release. The record in question is Kalpa, out July 1 with preorders starting tomorrow, and though I’m left wondering if it’s the band’s second full-length for their third and which between 2014’s Obsidian Monolith (discussed here) and 2013’s prior self-titled (discussed here) was an album and which was an EP, maybe it doesn’t matter, because Kalpa definitely is, running eight tracks and 38 minutes that begin with the tale-telling hooks of “Heavy Hand” and “Zombie Barricade” that bring about a classic, Kyussy desert-style heavy rock vibe the Truckfigthers-ish chug of “Dead City Lights” soon affirms. Priorities make themselves known quickly, efficiently, and splitting hairs isn’t on the list.

Vocalist Aaron Andersson is a significant presence throughout, channeling a brooding Matt Hyde of Beastwars in the early going of “Through the Halls of Sleep” but elsewhere front and center of the mix, riding the high energy riffage the one-two-three guitars provide while still being able to chill on belting it out when called upon by the track in question. “0°” presents enough of a turn toward a prog-metal riffing style that I wonder if the title isn’t a reference to Tool‘s “4°” — though actually it sounds more like “46 and 2” — but it’s an immediate twist for the start of side B, and leaves “Earth Mother” (premiering below) to return to ground, which it does with extra vocal layers, an extra-huge riff and a more grandiose nod and a chorus that calls back to “Heavy Hand” before “99 Eyes” presents a more aggro take on ’90s crunch and “Follow the Crow” slows down and starts mellow in such a way that telegraphs the big finish to come.

It caps with a fervent, shout-topped groove that does well to summarize the record as a whole, which benefits as much from songwriting as from the electricity of its performances, the more uptempo material especially carried across with an energy that feels derived from and loyal to a live setting. As Kalpa is Mexicoma‘s first offering — long-player or not — since 2014, no doubt its burly vibe will the the first encounter many listeners have with the band. The rougher edges, moodier moments and periodically thrown elbows should have no trouble eliciting a knowing nod from more experienced heads, as the underlying communion with genre is still readily apparent and brought forth in a spirit of aesthetic celebration.

Mexicoma, “Earth Mother” track premiere

We bring you news from the wire of the next Majestic Mountain Records signing:
We are truly psyched to welcome Sweden’s Mexicoma to the MMR crew.

“Earth Mother” the first single of their upcoming album “Kalpa” brings the mega riffy dessert tones and MMR is stoked to bring you their first release since 2014. Mexicoma brings it hard!

Their upcoming album will be the first release since 2014 for the desert toned, riff based, heavy stoner rockers from Umea, with the full Majestic treatment of course. And get amped, because ‘Earth Mother,’ the first taste from their upcoming album ‘Kalpa’ will be premiering on Thursday, the 2nd of June. Keep an eye out!

“Mexicoma are stoked to announce that we are signing with Majestic Mountain Records! Boss man Marco is a true music lover and it shines through in the way he runs the label with attention to details and care for the bands. Having only been around a few years, Majestic has already put a dent in the heavy music underground and Mexicoma couldn’t find a better mountain to dwell on!”

Please join us in giving Mexicoma a warm welcome to the MMR crew, we’re proud to have them with us!
