Can’t fight with this one. Ohhms — also all-caps: OHHMS — have a new record coming up and a new single to coincide. “The Mephisto Waltz” is catchy, solid heavy rock and roll. Its hook is right on time and its sense of shove comes entirely without pretense. Honestly, the vibe I get is pretty true to what vocalist Paul Waller says about the record below — that with so much chaos and unknown surrounding them, the band wanted to have fun. I think perhaps also there’s some element of comfort in writing songs not just about a subject of one’s own appreciation — classic horror in this case — but in executing material that takes its shape from likewise classic structures. I won’t call it simplicity, which would imply some kind of laziness or whatever on their part, but more of an awareness of purpose in stripping things down, at least for this song if not the record as a whole.

Some words from the singer Paul about the track… “Each song on the album is about a different horror movie. Simple as that. Also, they are named after the horror movie they are about. THE MEPHISTO WALTZ is a 1971 occult horror movie that is about a music journalist that sells his soul to the devil in order to be an excellent musician himself, in this case on the piano. With our back catalogue being so heavy in theme and the world news being so heavy in the past 2 years to the current day we just want to have fun going forward.”
