Coure

Barcelona-based instrumentalists Coure have set an Oct. 14 arrival date for their debut long-player, Inversum Nema, through Nooirax Producciones. Preorders are up now, if you’re the type to get such things out of the way, and to coincide with that, the sax-included five-piece have a video up now for the song “Ombra Nero Sunna,” which opens the album.

I already noted the sax — bass sax, to be specific, which on the scale of saxophone probably means it’s heavier — and that’s not to leave out the trumpet. Those two effectively fill space that might otherwise be left to vocals, but one way or the other, the focus in “Ombra Nero Sunna” is on ambience. A post-metallic vibe persists, and that blend is the foundation of the impression being made, whatever instruments  and jazzy flourish surround.

Coure released a self-titled EP in 2019, and on the other side of the reality swap, with their lineup fully built out as it would seem they intended, they cast an immediately individual vibe despite whatever familiarities exist, and there’s depth in this lead cut enough to make me believe there’s more depth to Inversum Nema than the simple novelty of its having horn players. To wit, the freakout.

The visual ambience accompanying “Ombra Nero Sunna” further supports that argument, as you can see in the clip below. Not necessarily extreme, but definitely dug-in, and not necessarily universally accessible; they don’t strike as a band looking to hook massive audiences so much as explore and blur the lines between genres. Cool by me, maybe you too if you’re in the right frame of mind. The album info follows, hoisted unceremoniously from the Bandcamp page for the album, where preorders, as noted, are open.

Have at you:

New LP – Inversum Nema

Coure receives its name from the metal copper- /CU/ -and from the latin term Cuprum. In ancient times, copper was valued for its malleability and heat transmission, and currently it is valuable for its energy conduction capabilities.

Coure’s music is also malleable and ever changing, though without losing its driving essence, just like said metal. The band’s personality entails the entangling of Metal structures with Progressive parts where both trumpet and saxophone replace the vocals and create atmospheres closer to Free jazz and improvisation.

This album is our first studio recording with the full band, we’ve added a bass sax to the original line-up, he is driving us into an exciting lost highway towards a post-apocalyptic dystopian future, full of crowded cities with noise and nonsense, people who live underground in search of metal, in their solitude invoke ancient gods that never come.

It’s the fruit of the curse that began in 2020 and plunged us more into slavery, in this album there is concentrated a part of darkness that we have suffered since then.

It is an inverted prayer to the ancient gods that few pay attention to.

We are not believers. Pray with us and enjoy the journey!

No one will come to save you…

Coure are:
Rowye (drums)
Richie (bass)
Ferran G (guitar)
Pope (trumpet)
Ferran B (bass sax)

Space Deer Release Debut Album The Forest

Posted in Whathaveyou on October 1st, 2020 by JJ Koczan

space deer

Hard-edged heavy rock and roll would seem to be the order of the day from Madrid-based outfit Space Deer, and the band’s debut album, The Forest, has plenty of it to offer. Issued through Nooirax, Bandera Records, Gato Encerrado and Violence in the Veins — no shortage of support, then — the record has a familiar foundation in the straight-ahead and desert-hued branch of heavy, which of course makes its association with a forest an all the more interesting prospect. What do they do with that? Mostly they rock and roll, and that’s just fine.

They’re not reinventing the style or anything, but they’re putting out an album during a pandemic and they sound like they have a good idea of what they want to sound like as a band. To be perfectly honest, asking anything more of them just seems like a prick move. So I won’t.

Album’s out now and streaming at the bottom of this post. Nooirax sent the following down the PR wire:

Space Deer releases their first LP “The Forest”

The young stoner rock trio from Madrid (Spain) presents their debut album, showcasing a fresh and dynamic approach

Following the first two self-edited EPs, Space Deer released on September 18 their first LP ‘The Forest’, supported by the labels Nooirax Producciones, Bandera Records, Gato Encerrado and Violence In The Veins.

Andrés, Carlos and Robert make sure to let us know what moves them: dirty desert rock. Moreover, while exploring this genre, they are willing to display their ability to create some direct and addictive cuts. After performing most of Madrid’s greatest venues, they feel excited to expand their numerous sound far beyond their known limits and fill with undergrowth every possible place.

The Forest contains 9 tracks, each of which has their own personality: some feel direct and energizing, whilst others remain intimate and ambient. This is an album full of shades and nuances, dense riffs and catchy melodies, often led by the vocals of the three members of the band. This tasty blend will for sure catch anyone’s attention if they gravitate towards bands like Kyuss, Red Fang or Sasquatch.

Produced, recorded, mixed and mastered by Carlos Muñoz, the own bassist of the band, in Space Deer’s rehearsal space in Parla, Madrid.

The artwork has been created by Tumulus Design and the limited purple-transparent vinyl can be acquired via the band’s Bandcamp, the labels that supported the album and various vinyl-specialised record stores.

Furthermore, the artist Buba Viedma has designed the T-shirt that celebrates the releasing of this very first album.

Hopefully very soon they will be able to present their record in a live situation, as this eclectic catalogue of songs deserves.
