Wizzerd to Release Space?: Issue No.001 in September; New Song Posted

Clearly Wizzerd have no time to waste. The Kalispell, Montana, heavy rocking four-piece dig into proto-metal riffing on “Don’t Zorp ‘n’ Warp” — fair enough advice, kids — and thus introduce their upcoming full-length, Space?: Issue No.001, with what at least sounds like maximum thrust, though it could well be they’ve got more tricks up their collective sleeve. In any case, the four-minute lead single from the band’s first long-player to see delivery through Fuzzorama Records is all go until about two minutes in, when it breaks to proggier, organ-laced contemplations, presumably of its life and the choices it’s made. You know, the usual.

So, do Wizzerd leave it all on the floor and jam their way into infinity, or do they perhaps come back, even at the very last second, to bookend with that earlier speed? Well, this time I’m not going to tell you. You’ll just have to figure that shit out on your own. By listening. Have fun doing so.

Fuzzorama Records to release Wizzerd – Space‽: Issue No.001 on September

New Single ‘Don’t Zorp ‘N’ Warp’ released and available on digital platforms: SPOTIFY, YOUTUBE MUSIC…

Although the members were good friends and musical allies for years beforehand, Wizzerd was officially formed in October 2014. Forged from countless hours of jamming in a northwestern Montana basement was a sound that Wizzerd could latch onto as their own. They soon penned and recorded their first album, ‘Doomchild’, and since then have been challenging themselves to grow in every way possible while remaining independently managed and produced. Since the release of ‘Doomchild’, they have written mounds of material and released some of it in the form of their self titled LP on Cursed Tongue Records, and has recently signed to the mighty Fuzzorama Records to put out the third in this musical trilogy: Space?: Issue No.001, set for release Sept 2022!

“Shattering expectations. Made me think if the Beatles, Parliament & Pentagram were one band” – Cody of Double Wide Studios

However, perhaps the way the band has grown most is on the road. Four years of extensive touring of the US and breaking ground in Europe has led the band to bring their sound to the ears of many people far and wide. All of this time in the van and on the stage was followed by lots of studio time in spring and summer 2020, which has led to a split with Ripple Music, as well as a signing with the upcoming album. With new music and more touring in the near future, Wizzerd has a bright road ahead that is not to be missed!

Deadly Vipers Post “Big Empty”; Low City Drone Due in Sept.

Posted in Whathaveyou on July 12th, 2022 by JJ Koczan

deadly vipers

Based in Perpignon, in Southern France, heavy psych four-piece Deadly Vipers have locked in a September release for their new album, Low City Drone, through Fuzzorama Records. The label, which has kind of paired Deadly Vipers with Montana’s Wizzerd in terms of release and promotional timing — that is to say, I’ve got a news post about Wizzerd‘s new record coming in September as well to put together — has posted the rolling closing track, “Big Empty,” from Low City Drone to coincide with the release announcement and the unveiling of the album cover, which you can see below.

“Big Empty,” which would seem to be about space — only 0.0000000000000000000042 percent matter, according to the internet — but actually puts a call out in the lyrics for the emergence of a ‘new mankind.’ Obviously this pulls my head right into the lore of Star Trek, Gene Roddenberry’s novelizations of “new humans” and all that. I imagine most will have other associations, but one way or the other, the track unfolds patiently toward a relatively quick apex, holding back some of the heft that showed up earlier in the previously-posted title-track, which ran nine minutes and can also be heard at the bottom of this post.

Because I like music. And words. So here’s words and there’s music. See why I might spend my time doing this?

Fuzzorama Records to release DEADLY VIPERS – Low City Drone in September

New Single ‘Big Empty’ released and available on digital platforms: YouTube (Lyric Video), Spotify/Itunes etc.

Real debauchery of decibels!

Deadly Vipers distills an effective fuzzy rock, without frills, thanks to the richness of the compositions, all made possible by grooves as catchy as they are devastating.

The band offer a personal vision of the genre, where the riff is the fuel that powers interstellar engines, actors of a journey from the desert expanses to the ends of the universe.

New album ‘Low City Drone’ is their own vision of the future/past, a dystopian tale about the humanity last breath and an utopian hope about the reconstruction after the end. Watch out for drones coming from above, they are listening to what is being said below…

Tracklisting:
1. Echoes From Wasteland
2. Atom
3. Low City Drone
4. Welli Welloo
5. Meteor Part II
6. Last Rise
7. Ego Trip

Wizzerd Post New Video; Tour Starts This Weekend

Posted in Whathaveyou on June 9th, 2022 by JJ Koczan

wizzerd

Good times. As it happened I was thinking about Wizzerd‘s hometown in Kalispell, Montana, earlier today. Sorcia were playing there, I think it was. An eternity distant in my mind, but that EP was good.

Speaking of imminent things with good EPs, Wizzerd head out this weekend on a healthy stretch of live dates that had me checking my email for an album announcement I might’ve missed — no there wasn’t one. Last I heard from them was when they signed to Fuzzorama. At the time the record, titled Space: Issue No. 001, was slated for Fall.

HOWEVER, in between me starting to write this post and actually putting it up, the band released the new video for “Supernova” and with that comes the confirmation that their album will be out Sept. 30. So if you’ve been keeping up, yes, Fall.

The following comes from social media, which unless you’re totally averse to such things, you already know because band names appear as tags. I’ve basically decided to stop changing that kind of thing, which I’ve done for a while now. That’s reasonable, right? If something is ever unclear, you can always drop me a line direct.

Anyway, on with it:

Valley of the Sun Announce European Tour

Posted in Whathaveyou on May 18th, 2022 by JJ Koczan

Valley of the Sun

It had been almost a decade — mere months away — since I last saw Valley of the Sun before catching them at the Saint Vitus Bar in Brooklyn for opening pre-party of Desertfest New York 2022 (review here), and among my first thoughts watching them as they tore into a selection of tracks from their new record, The Chariot (review here), and past releases was, ‘god damn, these guys need to get back to Europe.’ They were last there in 2019, touring with Bellringer, no less, and the extensive, many-festivals-inclusive list of dates should serve them well as they promote the album. My reasoning was pretty simple — the lineup that founding guitarist/vocalist Ryan Ferrier has behind him feels ready for bigger stages and as many eyes and ears as they can grab. And Europe is where that happens.

Total Volume Agency booked the shows, and again, it’s by no means the Cincinnati-based four-piece’s first time abroad, but even if you’ve seen them before — maybe it’s been a while, like it had been for me — consider showing up all the more of an imperative for the righteous performance this incarnation of Valley of the Sun brings. It’s not a thing you’ll regret.

The Chariot is out June 17 on Fuzzorama Records and Ripple Music. Dates follow:

Review & Video Premiere: Valley of the Sun, The Chariot

Posted in Bootleg Theater, Reviews on April 18th, 2022 by JJ Koczan

valley of the sun the chariot

[Click play above to stream the premiere of Valley of the Sun’s ‘Devil I’ve Become.’ Album preorders here for North America and here for Europe.]

Ohio heavy rockers Valley of the Sun will release their new album, The Chariot, on June 17 through Ripple Music and Fuzzorama Records. It is the Cincinnati-based four-piece’s second album for Fuzzorama, first for Ripple and fourth overall behind 2019’s Old Gods (review here), and it finds guitarist/vocalist Ryan Ferrier the lone remaining original member of the band with the acquisition of new drummer Lex Vegas. Bassist/keyboardist Chris Sweeney and guitarist Josh Pilot both played on the last record, but at 12 years remove from their debut EP, Two Thousand Ten, their time as a band has always been marked by lineup changes.

What makes their run to-date all the more impressive is their consistency in the character of their songwriting. The Chariot — which may or may not be named after a car; I’m leaning yes — continues a tradition for Valley of the Sun that goes back to their very beginnings in that first EP and 2011’s The Sayings of the Seers (review herediscussed here), which is it brings together a collection of ace tracks, constructed with care and passion both, energetically delivered with a mind toward live energy but a crisp, and all-pro-style recording sound. They begin using the according depth of their production immediately — the literal first seconds of opener “Sweet Sands” — as some particularly Hendrixian wah guitar leads the way into the first smoothly layered hook of the many to come.

Every song has something. That’s not saying The Chariot doesn’t have a flow from one song to the next — the shift from “Headlights” to “As We Decay” argues otherwise on linear formats — but from that initial guitar lick in “Sweet Sands” through the thudding drum part in the break and under the solo of “Images” to the stamping snare and insert-that-when-they-play-the-riff-slower-meme-here slowdown in the initially careening “Devil I’ve Become” (video premiering below), the post-midpoint comedown and build back up of “The Chariot,” the semi-psychedelic guitar at the end of “Headlights” that makes the aforementioned transition to “As We Decay,” which is a ballad complete with what may be slide guitar.

And if you’re listening on vinyl, that song begins side B with no flinch in purpose, with backing from the quieter buildup and Queens of the Stone Age-style backing vocals of “Running Out of Love,” the organ on the messy divorce story “Sunblind,” the flourish of cowbell here and there in the penultimate we’re-going-to-do-DefLeppard-but-heavy “The Flood” and the layered melodies and non-lyric vocals in “Colosseum,” which also rounds out The Chariot with a riff that’s about as signature as it gets for Valley of the Sun.

None of this is to say that the band or Ferrier as the presumed principal songwriter is shooting for novelty. Rather, it is emblematic of the care Valley of the Sun have always put into their work that each successive cut on their fourth album should have to justify its existence to them. Each Valley of the Sun album, from 2014’s Electric Talons of the Thunderhawk (review here) to 2016’s Volume Rock (review here) to Old Gods to The Chariot has been a step forward from the last.

valley of the sun devil ive become

VALLEY OF THE SUN

The same can be heard in the arrangement and treatment on Ferrier‘s vocals, which take full advantage of his range and ability to change up his delivery from one moment to the next, and even in the additional level of crunch brought into sections like the payoff nod groove of “Devil I’ve Become” or in the bridge between verses on “Sunblind” that is just the kind of sonic detail one has come to expect from the band, adding to the adrenaline at just the right time to emphasize movement.

That physicality is a big part of the momentum that The Chariot builds — even the title itself implies going somewhere, and the somewhat escapist lyrics back that up — as “Sweet Sands” and “Images” both roll out at a comfortable pace before they kick into the speedier beginning of “Devil I’ve Become.” At the start of side B, when “As We Decay” goes quiet ahead of the Brant Bjork-strum that begins “Running Out of Love,” the sound is gentler but no less considered, and that applies to side B’s own centerpiece-as-tempo-burst “Sunblind” as well.

All of this drives home the point that Valley of the Sun know what they’re doing. They know the heavy rock band they are and the band they want to be, and when “Colosseum” ends solid, they know that they’re ending the set at the show they just put on. It’s not about leaving in or taking out mistakes in songs — I’m sure there are flubs here and there that the band would have no trouble pointing out if asked; those kinds of things are crucial — but about capturing the electricity in the conversation that is the performance of the players involved, and on The Chariot, balancing that with as lush and far-reaching a production value as Valley of the Sun have ever had. There’s a restlessness behind them — fair, considering the era — but the care that’s taken in presenting this material isn’t to be understated or devalued.

It stands as further evidence that Valley of the Sun are veterans at this point. Their intention to take their favorite classic heavy rock, make it theirs, and give it to their audience could not be plainer. If they’re hiding anything from the listener, they’ve hidden it well, and though on first listen some of what they do might seem easy — they are and always have been an easy band to listen to — or maybe just straightforward on its surface with seven or eight of the 10 songs in the four-minute range, as deep as you want to go in hearing it, The Chariot will meet you there. And better, it’ll bring hooks too. Valley of the Sun know their sound, know that much of their listenership knows their sound, and still keep finding new things to make it do while delivering on the promise of their prior work. It is what you would hope a fourth album to be. It puts the songs first.

The Obelisk Questionnaire: Jamie Yeats of Wizzerd

Posted in Questionnaire on January 11th, 2022 by JJ Koczan

Jamie Yeats of Wizzerd

The Obelisk Questionnaire is a series of open questions intended to give the answerer an opportunity to explore these ideas and stories from their life as deeply as they choose. Answers can be short or long, and that reveals something in itself, but the most important factor is honesty.

Based on the Proust Questionnaire, the goal over time is to show a diverse range of perspectives as those who take part bring their own points of view to answering the same questions. To see all The Obelisk Questionnaire posts, click here.

Thank you for reading and thanks to all who participate.

The Obelisk Questionnaire: Jamie Yeats of Wizzerd

How do you define what you do and how did you come to do it?

What I do is express myself through music with my best friends, bring it to as many people as I can, and have as much fun as I can with it along the way. I don’t think I came to it so much as it came to me. It feels as much a necessity as it does a desire.

Describe your first musical memory.

I don’t have a specific first musical memory, but I do have a few songs that stand out as being the first songs that I remember hearing. Those would be: “Reelin’ in the Years” – Steely Dan, “Free Ride” – Edgar Winter Group, “In the Mood” – Glenn Miller. I also remember as a small child I would enjoy singing “Highway to Hell” by AC/DC in the backseat much to my mother’s dismay.

Describe your best musical memory to date.

I think it would have to be Wizzerd’s first show in Berlin. We played in the basement area of a venue called Zukunft, which looked and felt almost exactly like the DIY space in our hometown that we have played so many times, Old School Records. I had met the promoter about a month before while driving for Year of the Cobra, so I knew he was going to put on a good show. What happened was beyond expectations — a totally packed house! And in the middle of the tour, our playing was about as on fire as it can get. To top it all off we had friends from all over the world there. Good friends from Northern Ireland, a newer friend from Australia, a relative of a bandmate who moved to Berlin, and of course our brothers and tourmates Kal-El were all there sharing drinks and stories. All these things together made for a very special night. We made a primitive recording of the whole show and released a few songs from it on our Bandcamp page if anyone is that interested!

When was a time when a firmly held belief was tested?

I’ve always felt like when things get shaky, everything will sort of work itself out in one way or another. This was tested at the end of our aforementioned European tour. The tour was an expensive outing — lots of days off and touring with 10 people was not exactly profitable. By the end of the run we had eaten through all our funds. We were on our way to be dropped off in Amsterdam, where we were flying home from. The catch was that we had two more nights there before our flight with nowhere to stay and no money.

We had foreseen this for a few days and when the time finally came things seemed pretty bleak. We started planning sleeping shifts at the train station when I remembered that many years ago someone had messaged us on Facebook saying that if we were ever in Amsterdam we should meet up for a beer. I found the message and responded stating our situation. It turned out that the guy puts bands up all the time and just had a band cancel, so he offered to put us up for those two nights, and he even was able to get us a paying gig in place of the band who was going to stay with him! Everything worked out excellently and we owe Kees a massive thanks for life. I guess this was a time when the belief was tested — and it passed.

Where do you feel artistic progression leads?

Honesty.

How do you define success?

Happiness.

What is something you have seen that you wish you hadn’t?

I don’t know if there is anything. I don’t really wish anything was different in regards to what I have seen. It kind of seems fleeting to reach into the past and wish for something to change.

Describe something you haven’t created yet that you’d like to create.

A music video. Wizzerd has always stayed fairly self produced, recording all of our own material so far, mixing our first two records, doing some of our own photoshoots, stuff like that. We have gear to make a music video but have never really carved out the time to focus our efforts there for whatever reason. For the next album I think it’s a necessity! It would be fun to do it on our own or to collaborate. Music video makers get at me‽

What do you believe is the most essential function of art?

To invoke feeling. Any feeling in anyone. Whether it be the artist themselves feeling proud of their work, or disappointed in it while throwing it in the garbage. And on the flip side of the coin that goes for anyone consuming the art. I think someone confusedly saying “what the fuck is the point of that? I don’t get it.” is just as valid of a response as someone being moved to cry, for example. Any of these are some form of feeling invoked, and if any of them occur it means that the art has done its job.

Something non-musical that you’re looking forward to?

The next Dune movie. I’m a fan of the book and the first part which was just released was awesome!!

Valley of the Sun Sign to Ripple Music

Posted in Whathaveyou on December 29th, 2021 by JJ Koczan

Cincinnati heavy rockers Valley of the Sun have signed to Ripple Music. The band, who are also newly announced as openers for Clutch‘s New Year’s Eve show, released their most recent album, Old Gods (review here), in 2019 through the Truckfighters-helmed Fuzzorama Records, and it seems that label will have a hand in the band’s next offering as well. The more (distribution), the merrier (will be listeners who don’t have to pay crazy international shipping rates).

Valley of the Sun‘s breakout second EP, The Sayings of the Seers (review here, discussed here), turned 10 this year, and an anniversary reissue doesn’t seem beyond the realm of possibility, coupled either with Two Thousand Ten from the year before or whatever other early demos, etc., the band invariably has hanging around. But old material aside, new would also certainly be welcome, if they’ve got a new record in the works for sometime in 2022 with perhaps an eye toward returning to touring either domestically or abroad as they have on multiple occasions.

Whatever comes next, it’s good to know there are plans being put in place. Like Fuzzorama, Ripple is an excellent fit for Valley of the Sun, and if it gets their music into more ears, that’s a win.

The label and band were pretty aligned in their social media messaging:

Valley of the Sun

From Ripple Music:

Waveriders!! Huge news to end the year.

In conjunction with Fuzzorama Records, Please welcome to the Ripple family, Ohio rockers Valley of the Sun!

And for the first order of business, be sure to catch them as they open for Clutch in Cincinnati on New Years Eve!!!

Deadly Vipers Sign to Fuzzorama Records; New Album in 2022

Posted in Whathaveyou on December 29th, 2021 by JJ Koczan

Last week, which seems like a lifetime ago because holidays, news went up that Montana rockers Wizzerd had signed to Fuzzorama Records, and hey, that’s great. What I didn’t know until about five minutes after that post went live, however, is that Fuzzorama had two signings they were announcing on the same day. Sometimes people tell me things, other times not so much.

Perpignan, France, four-piece Deadly Vipers are the band in question who’ve also been picked up by Fuzzorama to release their new album in 2022. No title for it yet that I’ve seen, but the offering will be the follow-up to late-2017’s debut, Fueltronaut (review here), and one should always take it as a good sign when the same person mixing a record (who also happens to have a label) decides to put the record out. You know why? Because mixing is a pain in the ass. You can listen to the 15 seconds of a song like 75 times in a row and still not be done. If you can get through mixing something and still dig it enough to sign the band? Yeah, chances are you probably really dig that thing.

So, cool for Deadly Vipers and cool for Fuzzorama and cooler still as the band are trying some new things this time out. Here’s to progress:

deadly vipers

Deadly Vipers – Fuzzorama Records

We are so proud to announce that our second record will be released in 2022 on Fuzzorama Records!

It’s a big step for us, and we want to thank our friends, Mr. Ozo & Mr. Dango for their support, and all of you guys!

We’re really pleased to be part of the fuzz family, we’ve been fan of Truckfighters and all the label’s bands since years. We have always found that our music and its energy matched the label perfectly, so we are very happy and grateful that Mister Dango and Mister Ozo welcomed us.

Our upcoming release will push more our “stoner rock” music into new territories, with some touch of prog, doomy stuff and the addition of synth.

Bon appétit

Stay in tune for more news to come.
