The Obelisk Questionnaire: Mike Burns of Radian

Posted in Questionnaire on April 25th, 2022 by JJ Koczan

Mike Burns of Radian

The Obelisk Questionnaire is a series of open questions intended to give the answerer an opportunity to explore these ideas and stories from their life as deeply as they choose. Answers can be short or long, and that reveals something in itself, but the most important factor is honesty.

Based on the Proust Questionnaire, the goal over time is to show a diverse range of perspectives as those who take part bring their own points of view to answering the same questions. To see all The Obelisk Questionnaire posts, click here.

Thank you for reading and thanks to all who participate.

The Obelisk Questionnaire: Mike Burns of Radian

How do you define what you do and how did you come to do it?

I’m a guitar player, songwriter and a visionary. I started playing guitar around the age of 12 but didn’t really take it seriously or put much effort into it until the age of 16. My best friend at the time Sean, had a really sweet Iceman and a 2×12 combo amp.

We’d hang out all the time and play guitar. With him being substantially better than me and taking it very seriously, it was a learning curve for me to say the least. A few years later Sean and I started a band that went on for about 4 or 5 years. That was also a serious learning curve. At that point I knew that this is what I was meant to do and never looked back. It’s all Sean’s fault.

Describe your first musical memory.

I grew up in the city with my mother as a single parent. We didn’t have much, and she was always working to provide for us. Music always played a huge role in her life. She liked all kinds of music and would sing every word of every song she’d listen to. This was in the ‘80s prior to video games and the internet. She would listen to things like Led Zeppelin, AC DC, Eurythmics, Inxs, Bob Dylan, and Deep Purple just to name a few. Growing up around that time was much different than today. As a kid you had to go out and create adventures, at least I did. Growing up in a decent sized city your mode of transportation was your BMX bike or your skateboard and in some cases both. We would ride our bikes across town with our skateboards on the handlebars to the “sweet skate spot” or sometimes just skate all day to the spots.

An adventure, ya know? One day I met two brothers that moved in the neighborhood from Florida. These dudes could skate. I mean, like nothing I’ve ever seen in person. I wanted to skate like that also, so I started hanging out with them all the time skating everywhere around town and learning from them. That’s around the time the older brother asked me if I’ve ever listened to hardcore. I’m like what’s hardcore? He explained and turned me on to bands like Minor Threat, Black Flag and Misfits. I was immediately hooked! I was actually convinced that while listening to said bands on a boombox during our skate sessions would have you pulling off tricks that you normally wouldn’t be able to pull off if you weren’t listening to them. I’d like to think this is my first musical memory.

Describe your best musical memory to date.

This is a hard one, but this is the first thing that comes to mind. Growing up we would always have to travel about 45 minutes away to the big venue where all the great bands would play coming through on tour. It was and still is a legendary theater and ballroom that holds about 2500 plus people. That was the spot. Every show was like a huge event and if you didn’t go it was like you’re missing out on something. Years later my band got the opportunity to open for a local band that sold the place out damn near every time. I remember loading in, doing sound check and going to the green room looking at the brick wall that all these amazing bands that inspired me to play had written on or signed at one point or another.

Then getting to perform on the biggest stage I’ve ever been on at that point in front of a sold-out crowd. To me it was like experiencing everything that my peers got to experience. It wasn’t just the performance; it was the entire experience. From load in till load out. It was a taste of being part of something real. Something people wanted to relate to, and it was my creation. From that point on my drive got even stronger to be some part of this world.

When was a time when a firmly held belief was tested?

The fact remains that I have mental issues. So, with that being said, I have a solid handful of firmly held beliefs and not necessarily all of them are spiritual. My spiritual beliefs are pretty much in check. It’s the other beliefs that are tested almost on a daily basis especially nowadays. I don’t think I type fast enough to fully go on about this topic and not so sure readers would want to endure it.

Where do you feel artistic progression leads?

Every artist that works on their craft, no matter the type of art will progress. Especially with years. What are your motives for progression? For thy self or for others? For me personally it would be for myself as an artist to be able to deliver a better and redefined form of my own art for others to enjoy. People enjoying my art fills my heart with joy. So where does artistic progression lead? I believe that is an individual based answer.

How do you define success?

How do you define success? Is it defined by how many records you’ve sold? Is it defined by how many tours you’ve done? Is it defined by the amount in your bank account? I don’t feel as if the answer is any of those things! Being in my mid 40’s I believe it’s in how you’ve grown as a person. Have you become a better, more helpful person? I’d certainly like to think so. I also believe that success lies in setting goals and then achieving those goals, whatever they may be or how minor they may seem to others. I remember just wanting to start a band with my best friend. After some time, we achieved that goal. To me that was a success. Then I remember just wanting to play a live show. Over time that was a reality. To me that was a success. Any time you achieve goals that you set in place for yourself to me is a success.

What is something you have seen that you wish you hadn’t?

I have no regrets in life. Anything I’ve seen I’ve learned from and moved forward.

Describe something you haven’t created yet that you’d like to create.

I’ve always wanted to create a documentary film. Eventually I will get to it, but other goals that are more important to me hinder that. It will happen when the time is right. Just like every other goal I’ve set for myself. Time is not of essence in this matter.

What do you believe is the most essential function of art?

Self-expression! If you create a form of art for others to enjoy, I feel like it’s the individual’s expression of creativity that is intriguing to others. You’re enjoying someone’s vision. Someone’s expression of their own art.

Sure, you can steal someone else’s expression, but it would be far less intriguing to others because it is not original. However, on another note. Stealing someone’s expression and making it something of your own I also consider art.

Something non-musical that you’re looking forward to?

I’m sooooooo looking forward to Winter being over. Hot days, warm Summer nights by the campfire, fishing, and spending time with the ones I care about. Also not carrying gear in the snow haha.

Ghost:Hello Announce Fall Touring; New Album in Production

Posted in Whathaveyou on September 1st, 2021 by JJ Koczan

I have the next Ghost:Hello album as their second behind 2019’s The Sound of Color in Space (review here) and the PR wire below says it’ll be their third, though it may be including their late-2020 split with Nightgoat as part of that. Maybe it’s just early and my brain is fuzzy. So be it. One way or the other, the Ohio heavy rock weirdos have a new one in the works, from where I sit the world needs more weirdo heavy rock, so that little bit of information suits me just fine. I’m not sure what “in production” means in terms of timing, but my policy on release dates these days is until I see them I assume it’s gonna be a while, and even then I assume stuff is going to get pushed back. Science and eyeball-it-science are both on my side there.

There’s more of interest, however, since Ghost:Hello are also set to embark on a series of live dates over the course of the next few months. They’ll play mostly in their native Ohio, but in various towns and venturing into West Virginia on a long weekender as well, so getting out in a cautious, increasingly familiar way. They hit the East Coast two years ago, and in a universe of infinite possibilities might do so again some day.

For now, the aforementioned PR wire brings word:

ghost hello

GHOST:HELLO Announce Fall Tour

Synthesized stoner rock outfit GHOST:HELLO is kicking off their fall tour starting in their home state of Ohio. The full run of dates can be found below!

GHOST:HELLO is a synthed up stoner rock family affair from Northeast Ohio. Made up of a husband/wife duo and their long time friend, the band members have been playing in bands for decades. With extensive individual histories touring around the US and in other DIY bands, GHOST:HELLO just feels like a natural continuation. It’s a growth on what the individual members have done throughout their history. It seems logical for a band who seem destined to take the world of rock and roll by the horns.

Bringing in all sorts of unorthodox elements into their fuzz rock assault, this three piece counterbalances stoner sludge with trip hop grooves. While certainly unexpected, the group has never been afraid to experiment, and GHOST:HELLO is completely a slave to their various muses. This leads to an elegant fusion of influences of bands like TYPE O NEGATIVE to FATSO JETSON by way of QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE. Since their inception, the band has amassed an impressive social media following, with their third release in production. Like their debut release, the upcoming record has been engineered and produced by a friend through the company 8th Day Sound who has worked with such bands as SLAYER, MARILYN MANSON, and the SMASHING PUMPKINS.

Now as they double down for the release of their new record it seems like GHOST:HELLO are set to take on bold new vistas. Having played around the Midwest since 2013, the local crowd is hungry for what they are about to deliver. DIY til death, these fuzz rockers are looking forward to all they will unleash with this new record. GHOST:HELLO are planning everything from shows in new places to an animated video. A band who are no stranger to hard work, and who constantly push to innovate, GHOST:HELLO are a breath of fresh air in a crowded scene!

GHOST:HELLO Fall Tour Dates:

Radian Premiere “Not Dying” Video from Chapters LP

Posted in Bootleg Theater on April 29th, 2020 by JJ Koczan

radian

I know I’ve said it before, but Midwestern sludge — Ohio sludge in particular — is a special kind, and anytime Fistula‘s ultra-dysfunctional family tree gets a new branch, a certain amount of chaos is bound to ensue. Well, Radian boast the presence of drummer Jeff Sullivan, who did time in that outfit, as well as bassist Chris Chiera of Sofa King Killer and two former members of Rue in vocalist Jeff Fahl and guitarist Mike Burns, and sure enough, their debut long-player, Chapters, smashes and crashes with just that extra bit of aggression one finds underlying the most satisfying of sludge metals. Samples and clean vocals add flourish to the nine-minute opener and longest track (immediate points) “Stonier,” and even the three-minute centerpiece “Beast” of the five-track offering has launches with a sense of atmosphere before unleashing its full bludgeon, but the crux of Chapters is roaring and pissed off and the formative dynamic in the tracks serves as much to highlight that as it does to contrast it.

To wit, the chug of “Nothing Gets Through” opens up to a more winding progression and semi-clean finish on vocals — not quite living up to its title — and the drum-led “Hearts of Metropolis,” which appears right ahead of closer “Not Dying,” tempers its first-half assault with a post-midpoint slowdown that, while still mad, mad, mad, at least seems to change up the manner of its destruction. Hey, these things matter. When it comes to finishing the job, though, “Not Dying” is a pummel just about the whole way through from its opening gallop to its final nod. Yeah, there’s a bit of a dip before they begin the last push, but it doesn’t stick around, and when they finish with feedback, it’s more than well enough earned, both by pedigree and by the work being done here, which, while obviously schooled in the ways of sludge metal and Buckeye sludge specifically, is also looking to branch beyond those confines in scope. Chapters, in that sense, retains the energy of a debut offering despite the experience of those involved in making it. They’re undertaking a new exploration in a new configuration, though I’ve no doubt these dudes have played shows together for years and are by no means strangers coming into the project.

Fistula are still out there somewhere performing surgery without a license, and maybe you do or don’t remember the likes of Sofa King Killer or Rue — my abiding memory of the latter is doing a house show with them in Michigan and watching as everyone else checked out the bands while Rue hung in their van and listened to Iron Maiden; not exactly positive, but they were a good band nonetheless — but whether you do or not is secondary to what Radian are doing here, which is clearly the start of their own path.

Happy to host the video premiere for “Not Dying,” made by Dave Brenner of Gridfailure. Find it below, followed by more from the PR wire.

Enjoy:

Radian, “Not Dying” official video premiere

Official video of Radian’s “Not Dying” off debut album Chapters. Created by Dave Brenner.

Akron, Ohio-based doom/sludge metal merchants RADIAN — featuring former members of Fistula, Rue, and Sofa King Killer — have unleashed their devastating debut full-length, Chapters.

Like matter in space knows no gravity; like the thunder above that shakes the Earth below, RADIAN exists unbound. Chapters was recorded by Dave Johnson AKA Big Metal Dave (Midnight, Axioma, Brain Tentacles) at Bad Back Studio in Cleveland, Ohio and mixed and mastered by Sean Sullivan (Red Hot Chili Peppers, Beck) at Sound By Sully in Los Angeles, California. At once gargantuan sounding and unsettling, Chapters delivers five heaving tracks of relentless hardcore-infused, doom sludge. “We just wanted to experiment with different tones and take listeners on a journey,” issues the band, “From heavy vibes to emotional vibes. They are chapters. Stories. Musical voyages as well as songs.”

Chapters is out now digitally. For orders go to THIS LOCATION.

RADIAN — the standard unit of angular measure — was forged in the winter of 2017 when bassist Chris Chiera (ex-Sofa King Killer) and guitarist Mike Burns (ex-Rue) united, experimenting with ideas that would swell into the core of RADIAN’s planet rupturing sound. With the addition of drummer Jeff Sullivan (ex-Fistula) and vocalist Jeff Fahl (ex-Rue), RADIAN entered Bad Back Studio in October of 2019 and recorded their debut, Chapters. “Although we are relatively new to the scene, we are all stalwart veterans of all things doomed and stoned and are prepared to unleash our hazy fury and glory to all.”

RADIAN:
Jeff Fahl – vocals
Mike Burns – guitars, samples
Chris Chiera – bass, samples
Jeff Sullivan – drums

Ghost:Hello Announce September Release Tour

Posted in Whathaveyou on August 26th, 2019 by JJ Koczan

ghost hello (Photo by Tanner Young)

Setting forth from their Buckeye homeland with a cache of weirdo riffs to celebrate, three-piece Ghost:Hello will tour the Northeast-plus starting on Sept. 20, which by fabulous coincidence is also the release date of their new album, The Sound of Color in Space (review here). The Akron outfit start in their native burg and then hit Albany, NY, have three shows in New England — Maine, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island — and then bypass NYC, as will happen for a bizarre and yet-unsigned band, en route to Baltimore, West Virginia and finishing in Indiana at the Stoner Flash Tattoo Extravaganza on Sept. 27. Eight shows, eight nights, all good clean fun.

If you missed it, the track “The Mouth of the Gift Horse” was premiered here at the end of last month — if you’d asked me I’d have said it was like three days ago, so take that for what you will — and if you’re feeling too lazy to click the review link above, it’s at the bottom of this post too. Just trying to cover all the bases.

Go get noised:

Relaxer Announce Japanese Tour Dates; “The Endless Slope” Streaming

Posted in Whathaveyou on May 1st, 2019 by JJ Koczan

To mark the occasion of their Japanese tour, Ohio four-piece Relaxer will issue a new split with Boris (yup, Boris), Crypt City and Lisa Bella Donna (of Buckeye proggers EYE). That’s some considerable company to keep, and Relaxer keep it well with the track “The Endless Slope” that they’re streaming now. It’s down there, bottom of the post, as usual, and well worth the couple minutes of a quick listen for its classic rock vibe and overlaid melodic modernity. I wouldn’t call it progressive, but neither are they pretending to be dumb, and I like that.

The split they’ll have with them on tour, and I assume whatever’s left when that’s done will be for sale on the ol’ interweebs there, so keep an eye out. I think it you listen you’ll find it’s easy enough to get on board. I did.

Have at you:

relaxer

Relaxer is headed to Japan to tour with Boris. Making music for the sake or art or commerce is a multi-dimensional, engrossing prospect. It requires time, tenacity and emotion conjured from conscious and subconscious wellsprings.

At some point in their vibrant evolution, Relaxer’s sound began to take a mysterious shape, and members of the group tapped into new areas of their triune brain, setting free their once captive reptilian complex. In the interest of allowing their lizard group think to reap cognitive and aural havok, Relaxer are putting the finishing touches on a split with storied Japanese underground metal heroes Boris.

Invigorated the change in direction – from “passive progressive” and cinematic to atom-smashing, Middle Earth-borne, stoned-out frenzy — the agile, amplifier worshiping Ohio headbangers join their split-mates on an EarthQuaker Devices sponsored tour of Japan in May 2019.

Previously, Relaxer released their seven-song Unreal/Cities LP, which was recorded by engineer Ben Vehorn (Strand of Oaks), in 2016. The collection of psychedelic rippers featured contributions from Steve Clements (Six Parts Seven, Royal Bangs), and was followed by a run of west coast tour dates, including a performance at The Reverberation Appreciation Society’s (members of The Black Angels and friends) sixth LEVITATION music festival in Austin, Texas.

Unreal/Cities was preceeded by the band’s debut LP, 2014’s Lasers, which was engineered by Chris Koltay (Akron/Family, Electric Six, Tyvek) and mastered by Heba Kadry (Slowdive, YOB, Bjork), and a split 7” with Cloud Nothings released via Mind’s Eye/Square Records on Record Store Day 2013.

Relaxer is comprised of vocalist/guitarist Joe Scott, guitarist Jamie Stillman, bassist Corey Haren, and drummer Brad Thorla who previously performed with a variety of celebrated underground acts including The Party of Helicopters, Harriet The Spy, White Pines, Teeth of the Hydra, Sofa King Killer, Drummer (with Pat Carney of The Black Keys), etc.

Enhailer to Release Dumb Enough to Care Dec. 11; Teaser Now Streaming

Posted in Whathaveyou on December 1st, 2017 by JJ Koczan

enhailer

With a telling misanthropic sample culled from 1988’s Deadbeat at Dawn — ‘I hate people and I don’t fucking care,’ etc. — Akron, Ohio’s Enhailer unite once again with Blackseed Records, this time to release the single-song EP Dumb Enough to Care on Dec. 11. The track itself is something of a beast at 18 minutes long, but for all its professing to not give a shit, it also shows some considerable growth from where Enhailer were even just last year on their debut album, Grisaille. Whatever incongruity there might be between an anarcho-murder-spree point of view and a band willfully progressing their sound, the song is ridiculously heavy and lurches with revel-worthy glee, and could possibly portend of even harsher vibes to come.

There’s a teaser at the bottom of this post, along with the Bandcamp stream of Grisaille, should you want a refresher. Info follows from the PR wire:

enhailer dumb enough to care

Enhailer – Dumb Enough to Care – Blackseed Records

Blackseed once again teams up with Akron, Ohio’s Enhailer, offering an eighteen minute track via CD and cassette ‘Dumb Enough To Care’. It may seem a release this length would be considered short, but once your ears tune in, it serves up a delectable feast to entice hard doom lovers and progressive stoner rockers alike. This presents a darker, more abrasive Enhailer. Vocals added in just the right places give variance from their initial, almost fully instrumental debut.

‘Dumb Enough To Care’ is officially available as of Monday, December 11th, 2017. Enhailer will soon confirm its release party in their home town, as well as Pittsburgh, PA (the home of Blackseed Records) in early winter. Dumb Enough to Care Artwork by Fred Grabosky.

Enhailer is a “mid-paced, sludge, experimental, stoner, doom metal, progressive, misanthropic dirt rock” outfit based in Akron, Ohio. They’ve been together since 2014 and produced their first record, Grisaille (gri-sigh) in the summer of 2016. Filled with instrumental arrangements that simultaneously destroy and restore your faith in sonic healing, the band sold out of their self-produced debut CD in short order while playing out in a number cities with bands such as Goatwhore, Eyehategod, Black Breath, Lo-Pan, Childbite, Ringworm, Weedeater, and became a crowd favorite packing spots like Ralph’s (MA), The Grog Shop (OH), and the 31st Street Pub(PA).

Enhailer Release Debut Album Grisaille

Posted in Whathaveyou on September 30th, 2016 by JJ Koczan

enhailer

Over the last couple nights, Ohio’s Enhailer have journeyed east for shows in Brooklyn and Philadelphia alongside the likes of Caustic Casanova, Fashion Week and Clamfight. They’ll wrap that mini-tour tonight in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania, and pick up in October with a couple more dates as the Akron-based outfit set out to support the Blackseed Records CD issue of their debut album, Grisaille. Released digitally earlier this year and already sold through an initial pressing of discs, it finds the instrumentalists chugging out in the way of neo-progressive metal, but keeping a keen sense of groove as they go. If I called it heavy, you’d probably be like, “well yeah,” but it’s heavy. You can hear it for yourself in the stream below.

Blackseed sent over the following word on the release:

enhailer-grisaille

ENHAILER – GRISAILLE: Debut CD on Blackseed Records

Enhailer quickly found a collaborating enthusiast in Grisaille and decided to join forces with a mainly noise/experimental label Blackseed Records (Vomir, Macronympha, Zaimph, o Heidrun, Last Rape, Agathocles).

This September 26th, 2016 that collaboration is born in an official release of Grisaille, in which Blackseed believes will be a great first edition in the label’s realm of projects focused in the dark and the heavy, the doomed and the tuned down, the tranquilizing and the raw.

The current line-up is drummer Chadd Beverlin and bassist Michael Gilpatrick (both of Rue, Cultist, Mockingbird) and with guitarist Mike Lorenz (Iron Jawed Guru).

You can pick your copy up at a show listed below, on the Enhailer Bandcamp, or at Blackseed Records.

9/30 Aliquippa @ Fallout Shelter w/ Only Flesh, Dismoprphia, Murder For Girls, Disobey
10/20 Columbus @ Space Bar w/Drones
10/28 Pittsburgh @ Gooskis w/Horehound, Horseburner

Enhailer are planning to tour with Come to Grief throughout the Midwest in months to come.

Fistula Release Two New 7″s

Posted in Whathaveyou on June 3rd, 2015 by JJ Koczan

fistula

There’s no keeping up with Fistula. They’re on pills. Those who aren’t can’t hope to compete. The prolific Ohioan sludge degenerates released two singles this past weekend. They’re one of few bands in the world who could cover GG Allin and have it make any kind of sense, and both Ignorant Weapon and Never Trust a Cop are available now through PATAC Records, and not that Fistula need my or anyone else’s endorsement or anything, but they’re punk rock’s fucked up older brother and everything they do reinforces that fact. Look out for their next 7″, which has probably already been released.

Info, audio, changing lineups, DIY fuckall:
