Horseneck Post Debut Single “Something’s Broken”

So, of course, right? The song is called ‘Something’s Broken,’ and it cuts off at two and a half minutes. Get it? Like the song is the broken thing?

Well, I didn’t get it and embarrassed myself asking Horseneck if it was complete or if there was some upload error — these things happen — but lucky for me Tim Catz and Jeremy Hemond are pretty easygoing. Some bands make fun of you for that kind of thing. [EDIT: Actually, the song does have a sudden finish, but the upload to YouTube is also cut off, so both things are true. Go figure.]

You’ll recall Catz on bass and Hemond on drums holding together and driving some of the finest heavy rock grooves ever to emanate from Boston as members of Roadsaw, and bass-and-drum-minded though their new duo apparently is, they’ve still got room in their debut single for their Roadsaw bandmate Ian Ross (also Murcielago) to add bluesy lead guitar to play off Catz‘s low end, vocalist Craig Rawding — not to be confused with Roadsaw and Kind frontman Craig Riggs, also drummer for Sasquatch — working in a post-Soundgarden vein to convey soul and classic spirit.

Catz‘s songwriting needs little to acquaint the listener. With roots in garage, grunge and punk that showed themselves in White Dynomite and a willingness to be weird that served him well on the 2021 solo outing Fly Like a Seagull (discussed here), he’s in solid form teasing more to come with “Something’s Broken,” and re-paired with Hemond, who didn’t play on Roadsaw‘s 2019 album, Tinnitus the Night (review here), he sounds right at home, and the recording by Alec Rodriguez at Mad Oak gives familiar clarity to the proceedings, quick as they are.

Got two and a half minutes? Yeah, sure. Here’s the blue text and the song:

S of a B, that looks a lot like Matt Barry, standing there!

Haha, nope, just Tim Catz, though I dig a lot of the music Matt Berry puts out as well, and of course ‘Snuff Box’ and ‘Toast of London’ are genius. He was in that Matt Groening medieval cartoon on Netflix too. Singular voice.
