KOLLAPS\E to Release Debut Album Phantom Centre Jan. 13
So, KOLLAPS\E‘s debut album, Phantom Centre, isn’t out until January — it arrives with the backing of Trepanation Recordings, which is no minor endorsement as regards anything sonically volatile, from noise rock to more post-metallic fare like this and well beyond into various drone and noise-based styles — but there are three first two tracks streaming now, and the Swedish band make a striking impression, drawing atmosphere from Celestial-era Isis while reaffirming the tenets of cerebral crush as offered by more recent European acts. In other words, they sound, at least going by “Era” and “Beautiful Desolate,” which you can stream below, like they know what’s up. That’s never a bad place to begin with a record.
And the two songs also signal more reach than it might at first appear, as “Beautiful Desolate” picks up from the cut prior with a tighter sense of craft and something of a veer away from the obligatory ambience in favor of more resounding intensity. It’s punishing, for sure, and has the growls over top to emphasize the point, but it’s an intriguing blend from one song to the next and holds promise for the rest of what might follow while digging itself into a satisfying lurch in the meantime.
