Black Space Riders to Release We Have Been Here Before Oct. 21

Münster, Germany-based heavy progressive rockers Black Space Riders return with their first album in four years, We Have Been Here Before, on Oct. 21. The long-ish running and generally amorphous outfit were last heard from with 2018’s love-minded Amoretum Vol. 2 (review here), which at that time pushed them as far out as they’d gone into un-genre’d territory, an individualized take on expressive songcraft that was nonetheless heavy, complex and thoughtful, crying out in favor of love in a world that, well, hasn’t come to need it any less in the years since.

Preorders for We Have Been Here Before, which I can’t help but read in any number of ominous contexts, begin Aug. 19. Why wait? I don’t know, but I’m not in charge of this shit so just put it in your calendar or something. The first teaser for the record presents the title-track and lyric, but if you know even the teeniest, tiniest bit of anything about Black Space Riders‘ work since their 2010 self-titled debut (review here), you probably know that no single song or piece of a song is ever going to be fully representative of the scope of one of their releases. The safest bet here is to say “more to come,” so I’ll go with that: More to come.

For today, this from the PR wire:

BLACK SPACE RIDERS To Release New Album We Have Been Here Before

album release: 21. Oct. 2022
album pre-order: 19. Aug. 2022

Progressive, heavy psychedelic outfit BLACK SPACE RIDERS have unveiled a teaser for the upcoming full-length We have been here before releasing on October 21st, 2022 via Cargo Records. An out of this world voyage awaits as BLACK SPACE RIDERS journey through an array of thrilling musical offerings.

BLACK SPACE RIDERS launched in 2009 founded by members JE and Crip in Münster, Germany. Their debut album materialized in 2010 and over a decade later, We have been here before marks their seventh full-length. The collective strive to deliver a distinctive sound with no musical styles or influences off limits. “Crawling in” swathes a dynamic soundscape of synthesizers, segueing into the heavy groove rhythms of “Crawling (down with everything)”. Bringing a stylistic change, “Almost (the) Lost” sees low, soft intimate vocals with minimalist instrumentation along with reggae inspired melodies and instruments. Gradually building with added distorted guitars as the track progresses, “Almost (the) Lost” transforms into a full heavy arrangement.

“AAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRGGGH” is a fury of anguish-fueled punk and hard rock, while the following title track delves further into progressive realms. Concluding the album with the spectacular “Worlds collide dans ma tete” extending over ten minutes in length, BLACK SPACE RIDERS unleash an electrifying finale.

We have been here before is an odyssey of striking creativity and production. The new album is a fusion of immersive soundscapes, catchy hooks and driving rhythms all accompanied with a Sci-Fi undertone. BLACK SPACE RIDERS have crafted a record that showcases the breadth of their musical capabilities. Their sound is by no means caged inside one genre as it transcends boundaries seamlessly combining a multitude of styles, all while remaining cohesive to their core identity.
