Ruiner Sign to Desert Records; The Book of Patience Out June 9
One assumes Ruiner‘s Zac Hogan is not lacking self-awareness in naming the drone solo-project’s single-song/80-minute debut album The Book of Patience. The New Mexico-based Hogan, formerly of Drought, currently also guitarist of blackened death metallers Dysphotic, isn’t the first to explore drone frequencies in longform by any means, and it’s worth pointing out that he isn’t claiming to be, but the whoever pegged the track “Liber Patientiae” as ‘floral’ nailed it. Petals falling in air. Absolutely. Drone rites of Spring.
I actually just turned the record off so I could finish this post because the drone was kind of consuming. There’s no sample up from it yet, but while I’m sure everybody involved knows the marketability of 80 minutes of mostly the same kind of noise — not knocking it, just pointing out that it’s never going to be everybody’s thing — I’ll say that a headphone listen is evocative enough to surprise. I’ll be interested to see the response it gets.
