The Obelisk Questionnaire: Thomas Hazelmyer of Amphetamine Reptile & Haze-XXL

Thomas Hazelmyer of Amphetamine Reptile Records

The Obelisk Questionnaire is a series of open questions intended to give the answerer an opportunity to explore these ideas and stories from their life as deeply as they choose. Answers can be short or long, and that reveals something in itself, but the most important factor is honesty.

Based on the Proust Questionnaire, the goal over time is to show a diverse range of perspectives as those who take part bring their own points of view to answering the same questions. To see all The Obelisk Questionnaire posts, click here.

Thank you for reading and thanks to all who participate.

The Obelisk Questionnaire: Thomas Hazelmyer of Amphetamine Reptile & Haze-XXL

How do you define what you do and how did you come to do it?

These days I make art pieces around music and sell them. In the past I was more focused on finding new music than in the art of it, though sometimes I still do that.

Describe your first musical memory.

There’s not a specific one in particular, but the earliest I do remember is on weekends when my parents would crank their stereo while cleaning the house, or drinking beers on the porch. Lots of Neil Diamond, Beatles and CCR.

Describe your best musical memory to date.

There is no “best” in a lifetime of music. From being a insane fan, to playing, producing and working with/in music, that is an absolutely impossible question.

When was a time when a firmly held belief was tested?

Just recently, I’ve always believed I could easily get along with those I was far from ideologically in alignment with, still be respectful, civil, straight up friendly with. Insane displays of pants shitting fear trying to be passed off as virtue, tested that belief further than ever before.

Where do you feel artistic progression leads?

How the fuck would I know? If I knew where it was leading I would already be there. I’m not aesthetically patient.

How do you define success?

Being happy with what you created.

What is something you have seen that you wish you hadn’t?

Back in the early days of the ineternet there was a website called Rotton DOT com….

Describe something you haven’t created yet that you’d like to create.

I want to do a retail shop, in the worst possible era to do just that!

What do you believe is the most essential function of art?

For me, it induces an instantaneous visceral joy, excitement, titallation on intellectual and emotional levels.

Something non-musical that you’re looking forward to?

The imminent economic collapse. Chaos, rebirth and hopefully a shedding of so much ignorance and corruption.
