Mighty High Put Their Hands Up

Can't complain about this.Available through the band?s own Mint Deluxe Tapes on a blue splatter 7? vinyl, leading hemp advocates Mighty High?s Mighty High Drops a Deuce affirms the appeal put forth by the band on last year?s ?In Drug City full-length. And it?s a pretty basic appeal. These are four dudes from Brooklyn who write simple stoner punk songs about getting high. Rarely does it get more straightforward than that.

I like Mighty High because they?re honest. There?s infinitesimally little bullshit to their presentation. They?re not on stage pretending to be monsters or posing out as pseudo-intellectuals too smart to rock. They?re singing ?Hands up if you want to get high!? and calling themselves ?Brooklyn?s number one regressive rock act.? They?re having fun. Non-ironic fun! What a concept.

Hands down if you want to get high. (Photo by Theo Wargo)On the classily-titled Mighty High Drops a Deuce (which, like their LP, features the viscerally intricate art of Wayne Braino Bjerke), vocalist/guitarist Woody High, bassist Tommy Blow, guitarist TJ Whippets and drummer Jesse D?Stills romp through two tracks of addled whimsy that lives up to their name. Both songs have a more punk rock feel than some of the ?In Drug City material, but it works. With ?Cable TV Eye,? Woody gives a paranoid take over riffy and ?80s inspired raucousness — they call it ?Black Flag Railroad? — and on the allegedly live ?Hands Up! (Live n Nasty),? they rock out yet another catchy chorus over top of a recorded audience that sounds remarkably like something from a Ted Nugent live album.

Needless to say, hilarity ensues.

Mighty High?s sound plays out like a litmus test for those who want to know if they take themselves too seriously. If you can?t get down with the short dose of inebriate punk they?ve got on offer with Mighty High Drops a Deuce, the band is probably too stoned to notice you?re not at the show anyway. And on that level, they win out no matter what. Two catchy tracks on cool-looking vinyl with killer art. It?s like balloons on the mailbox, man. ?Party over here.?
