Roadburn 2016: Diamanda Galás Added to Lineup

Posted in Whathaveyou on January 6th, 2016 by JJ Koczan

I’m going to go out on a limb and say that even if you’ve never listened to Diamanda Galás, the people who make the music you listen to have. The West Coast experimentalist has been crushing preconceptions of what music should do since 1982’s The Litanies of Satan, and across landmark studio and live works, her influence has spanned generations and, I’d expect, will only continue to do so as she plays an early headlining set at Roadburn 2016 as part of Lee Dorrian‘s curated event, Rituals for the Blind Dead.

Day tickets for Roadburn 2016 go on sale tomorrow. Info on that and the initial announcement about Galás follow here:

Roadburn Festival is honoured to announce that Diamanda Galás will headline Lee Dorrian’s Rituals for the Blind Dead Pt. 1 on Friday, April 15 with a performance entitled ‘Death Will Come and Have Your Eyes’. The performance will start at 15.30 due to technical and logistical reasons. Furthermore, on Saturday, April 16 at 13.30, the legendary singer will also be a part of Lee Dorrian’s Rituals For The Blind Dead Pt. 2 at Het Patronaat, which will be turned into a seated venue for the screening of Schrei 27 – a film created by Galás and Italian filmmaker Davide Pepe – followed by an unmissable Q&A session with Diamanda.

DAY TICKETS

Roadburn Festival is very pleased to announce the details of our 2016 day tickets for Thursday, Friday and Saturday of the festival. These will go onsale at 7pm CET on Thursday January 7, 2016 and will be priced at €59 each (plus fees). Day tickets will be limited so don’t delay!

Due to the upgrades to the 013 venue throughout 2015, Stage01 (still affectionately known by many as the Bat Cave) no longer exists, but in its place there is a larger Green Room which will host bands at the 013 venue. In addition to this Roadburn will be making use of the nearby Extase venue which is located behind Het Patronaat – the smallest stage has always been such an important part of Roadburn and that will continue in 2016. Cul de Sac will also be used as an official venue for Roadburn once again.

More information on the day tickets can be found HERE.

Roadburn 2016: Mondo Drag, Blind Idiot God, Bliksem and Peter Pan Speedrock Join Lineup

Posted in Whathaveyou on December 18th, 2015 by JJ Koczan

I’m extremely pleased to announce that I’ll be returning to Tilburg next April for Roadburn 2016. News came earlier this week that we’ll be doing another run of the Weirdo Canyon Dispatch daily fanzine at the fest, and I’ll once more be partnered with Lee Edwards of The Sleeping Shaman and publicist extraordinaire Becky Laverty in bringing the thing to life. This will be my eighth time at Roadburn, but my first time at Roadburn 2016, and from where I sit, that makes all the difference.

I know damn well I’ll have more about the fest between now and next April, but I can’t even hope to begin to express how grateful I am to Roadburn, to the 013 venue in Tilburg, to Walter and Jurgen and all involved with making it happen. I’m continually humbled by how welcomed and included I’ve come to feel over the last few years, and I can’t wait to get back to the 013 office and see everybody again. It’s been a hell of a year. I have no doubt there will be much to discuss.

Today, Roadburn 2016 announces Mondo Drag, Blind Idiot God, Peter Pan Speedrock (who’ll play as part of their retirement tour) and Bliksem for its lineup. The batch of news below also contains ticket info for the individual days, though really, if you’re going, go for the whole thing. Pack as much in as you can, because it’s going to have to sustain you a whole year until Roadburn time comes around again.

Oh, and make sure you click through and read the full Blind Idiot God announcement! I wrote that one.

Here’s the latest:

NEW ADDITIONS

We will have the legendary PETER PAN SPEEDROCK bringing their high energy rock to Friday proceedings as part of their farewell tour. Read more about them HERE.

The news has already gotten out but we’re incredibly excited to welcome BLIND IDIOT GOD to the Roadburn family for the first time.  They perfectly embody the Roadburn manifesto. Read more about them HERE.

MONDO DRAG will be bringing some Californian sunshine and psychedelic, Krautrock inspired prog all the way to Tilburg in April. Read more about them HERE.

BLIKSEM have been celebrating the release of their latest album, Gruesome Masterpiece, and we’ll be helping them continue those celebrations into 2016 with their performance at Roadburn Festival.  Read more about them HERE.

SKEPTICISM: FAN PICKED SET LIST POLL IS NOW OPEN

When SKEPTICISM take to the stage on Saturday April 16, they will be playing a set that has been entirely picked by their fans. The poll is now open for fans to select their favourite tracks from their back catalogue – which the band will bring to life on stage at Roadburn. The poll runs until the end of the year; votes can be cast HERE.

AMENDMENT TO SCHEDULE

Due to some logistic issues, we have to switch JOHN HAUGHM’s solo performance from Friday, April 15th to Saturday, April 16th. Inspired by the bleak desert landscape, he  will bring one of the most sinister Western soundscapes – a collage of material from his latest release The Last Place I Remember – to Roadburn 2016.

Roadburn 2016: Converge To Play Two Sets; Brothers of the Sonic Cloth Added

Posted in Whathaveyou on December 3rd, 2015 by JJ Koczan

Converge playing a doom set assisted by Chelsea Wolfe, Ben Chisholm, Stephen Brodsky and Steve Von Till? After they already played their massively influential Jane Doe album in its entirety for the first time ever? Yeah, that sounds about right for Roadburn. How the fest continues to come up with this stuff year after year is beyond me, but Roadburn 2016 is proving as cornucopia-esque as ever, and there’s still a long time to go before April gets here.

I’ll confess, I’m even more stoked at the thought of Brothers of the Sonic Cloth being added. I missed them when they came through on tour with Neurosis — I should put together a top 20 list of awesome shows I didn’t go to this year because of work and then shoot myself in the fucking face — and they were on my Roadburn 2016 wishlist even before that. An obvious pick, maybe, but necessary in the extreme.

Midnight have canceled, but I’m sure they’ll be replaced with something suitably chaotic, and included in the latest announcement is Black Mountain as well, word about which also came out the other day. Here’s news from the fest:

CONVERGE confirm two special sets for Roadburn 2016

  • CONVERGE confirm two special sets for Roadburn 2016
  • BROTHERS OF THE SONIC CLOTH, BLACK MOUNTAIN added to the bill
  • MIDNIGHT cancel European tour including Roadburn Festival

CONVERGE

To celebrate the upcoming 15 year anniversary of their legendary Jane Doealbum, CONVERGE will perform the album in its entirety for the first and last time. The album is considered a classic that defined the metallic hardcore genre as we know it today. This special set is exclusive to the Roadburn Festival and will not be played again anywhere, ever.

CONVERGE will play the Jane Doe album live in its entirety at Roadburn 2016 on Thursday, April 14.

CONVERGE “Blood Moon” is a collaboration between members Jacob Bannon, Kurt Ballou, Nate Newton, and Ben Koller and guest musicians Chelsea Wolfe, Ben Chisholm, Stephen Brodsky, and Steve Von Till. Together as a multi-instrumental group they will create renditions of existing CONVERGE material focusing on the band’s slower, more ambitious work within their legendary catalogue.
CONVERGE “Blood Moon” will perform live at Roadburn 2016 on Saturday, April 16.

BROTHERS OF THE SONIC CLOTH
Hailing from Seattle, BROTHERS OF THE SONIC CLOTH might be a relatively recent name in our grand amphitheatre of heavy, but they have within their riffs the timeless stuff of greatness, the untraceable ingredient which permeates every band with the ability to quake your bones with the power of sound alone. It’s easy to understand why – the head of this brotherhood is none other than the mighty Tad Doyle, whom anyone over 30 and with a good record collection will instantly remember from the amazing TAD, one of the most metallic and crushing propositions to come out of the 90s Sub Pop wave.

The band has yet to play outside the United States, but they have been sharing stages with the likes of Neurosis and The Body, who will also both be present at Roadburn 2016 and who should give you a hint of what to expect from Tad and his cohorts when the moment finally comes.

To find out more about BROTHERS OF THE SONIC CLOTH click HERE

BLACK MOUNTAIN
As we announced last week, five years after headlining the Afterburner, acclaimed Canadian psychedelic rock masters BLACK MOUNTAIN will return to Tilburg, Netherlands to perform at Roadburn 2016 at the 013 venue on Thursday April 14.

BLACK MOUNTAIN’s Stephen McBean comments “Roadburn is the teenage wet dream for heavy metal outcasts, the people, the party and of course, the riffs!  Black Mountain can’t wait to turn up, turn on and get down with some future right on. Thank you for all the years of face melting!”

To find out more about BLACK MOUNTAIN at Roadburn, click HERE

MIDNIGHT – CANCELLATION
It is with great sadness that we have to announce that MIDNIGHT will no longer be playing Roadburn 2016. The band have offered only this statement regarding their cancellation:

“Due to private reasons MIDNIGHT will not be able to play the already announced European tour in April 2016.”

We have been working closely with MIDNIGHT’s European booking agency to see if there was a way around this, but unfortunately it seems there is not, as their entire European tour (club shows and festival appearances alike) for April 2016 have been cancelled.

We – like you – are very disappointed that Midnight won’t be playing the 2016 festival. But please pack your leather jackets, bulletbelts, and facemasks, because you’ll surely need them for the rock ‘n roll juggernaut that will step in as Midnight’s replacement, and which will be announced in due course. Speedfreaks be forewarned.

Tickets to Roadburn Festival 2016 are currently on sale.  Three-day tickets are available for 165 Euros (excl. service fees); four-day tickets cost 185 Euros (excl. service fees). Sunday-only tickets cost 39 Euros (excl. service fees). Roadburn 2016: Black Mountain Added to Lineup

Posted in Whathaveyou on November 25th, 2015 by JJ Koczan

Canadian psych rockers Black Mountain released a soundtrack in 2012, and earlier this year they oversaw a 10th anniversary reissue of their 2005 self-titled debut, but it’s been five years since Wilderness Heart, their last proper studio LP, came out in 2010. That’s probably long enough. Whether or not they’ll have something in the works or done by the time they get to Roadburn 2016 in April, I won’t speculate, I’m just pointing out numbers. They headlined the Afterburner in 2011, so it won’t be their first time making the trip, but I can’t help but wonder if they won’t have more news to come in the New Year.

Roadburn 2016 has been adding bands in batches so far — see here and here and here and here and here — and, granted, some of those batches have varied in size, but Black Mountain are the first standalone announcement the Netherlands-based fest has made. Not a bad distinction to have:

Canadian Psychedelic Rockers Black Mountain Set To Return To Roadburn Festival

Five years after headlining the Afterburner, acclaimed Canadian psychedelic rock masters Black Mountain will return to Tilburg, The Netherlands to perform at Roadburn 2016 at the 013 venue on Thursday April 14.

With three full-length albums, a soundtrack album, and a host of EPs, the Vancouver band, led by guitarist / singer Stephen McBean, quickly became one of the most critically praised bands of the 2000s. Bridging the heavy rock of Blue Cheer and Led Zeppelin with the more abstract sounds of the Velvet Underground and Hawkwind, 2005’s Black Mountain and 2008’s In the Future cemented Black Mountain’s status as leaders of a new generation of rock bands embracing vintage sounds, and have since spawned countless imitators. Critics and audiences have responded in kind, as In the Future and 2010’s Wilderness Heart were both nominated for Canada’s prestigious Polaris Music Prize.

“Roadburn is the teenage wet dream for heavy metal outcasts,” says McBean, who is elated to return. “The people, the party and of course, the riffs! Black Mountain can’t wait to turn up, turn on and get down with some future right on. Thank you for all the years of face melting!”

Roadburn Festival takes place between 14 – 17 April 2016 at the 013 venue, in Tilburg, The Netherlands. Tickets are on sale!

Roadburn 2016: Bang, The Body, Blood Ceremony, CHRCH, Repulsion, Behold! the Monolith and More Added to the Lineup

Posted in Whathaveyou on November 19th, 2015 by JJ Koczan

Another day, another sigh heaved by Roadburn 2016 and a list of, I don’t know, like, 45 lineup additions expelled. Like it’s just happenstance, no big deal. Oh, Repulsion are playing Lee Dorrian‘s curated day. Oh, Bang are doing their first European show ever and they’ve been a band since 1970. Oh, G.I.S.M. are playing outside Japan for the first time ever. Ho hum. Meanwhile skulls around the planet cave in simultaneously, mine included.

Particularly noteworthy? CHRCH. The Sacramento five-piece released their devastating full-length, Unanswered Hymns (review here), earlier this year, and it’s quite simply one of 2015’s best debut albums. Also Blood Ceremony, who’ll reportedly have a new record out by then, and Behold! the Monolith, whose new one, Architects of the Void (review here), came out this fall.

All this and more. Here are words from the PR wire:

Cult of Luna, G.I.S.M, Repulsion, Bang, and more added to Roadburn 2016 lineup

• CULT OF LUNA to celebrate tenth anniversary of Somewhere Along The Highway with a special performance.
• G.I.S.M, REPULSION, and BLOOD CEREMONY added to Lee Dorrian’s curated events
• BANG play their first show in Europe at Roadburn 2016.

CULT OF LUNA

2016 will mark a decade since CULT OF LUNA unleashed Somewhere Along The Highway – catapulting them to the top of end of year lists, and in to prized positions in record collections the world over.

Whilst the last ten years has seen the ascendency of CULT OF LUNA’s star, as well as two further stunning albums, Somewhere Along The Highway remains something of a marker in this history of the band. It seems fitting then, that just a week shy of the album’s official anniversary, CULT OF LUNA will be performing the album in full at the 013 venue on Thursday 14 April 2016.

It’s an honour to welcome back CULT OF LUNA to Roadburn Festival; the threads of their influence are weaved throughout many of the bands that have appeared on our line ups over the years. Join us as we honour the seminal importance of Somewhere Along The Highway, and celebrate all that CULT OF LUNA have achieved since its inception.

LEE DORRIAN’S RITUALS FOR THE BLIND DEAD

Joining Pentagram, Galley Beggar and With The Dead at Lee Dorrian’s curated events will be three newly added bands.

• G.I.S.M

Over a decade after ceasing activities, G.I.S.M. reappear for their first concert ever outside their native Japan – at Roadburn 2016. The absolutely legendary Japanese band embody the true meaning of cult – one of the first acts to bridge the gap between hardcore punk and metal, and in the process redefined danger and unpredictability with violent stage antics and the insane aggression of their music

Lee Dorrian comments: “I thought it was an extremely long shot for many reasons. Mainly because I knew that they had never performed outside of Japan but also, they hadn’t even performed a show in Japan for over a decade. I still can’t quite believe that this is actually happening but the flights are booked and they are getting ready to come and boot you so brutally fucking hard in the ass!”

G.I.S.M’s Sakevi added: “It’s my pleasure to be involved and to be part of such a cool festival. It’s our first time ever playing outside of Japan, and it will be our fist show at all since February 2002! We’ll be playing a so-called “classic set” – and I’m already looking forward to having a lot of fun at Roadburn.”

To find out more about G.I.S.M click HERE

• REPULSION

Over 25 years after the release of REPULSION’s standalone masterpiece Horrified, still stands as one of the major cornerstones of not only grindcore, but extreme metal as a whole.

Lee Dorrian, a pioneer in the scene himself, says: “The line-up for my curated event is getting more and more exciting as we go along. I can’t tell you how happy I am that REPULSION are still playing live and crushing skulls wherever they appear. The legacy of this amazing and extremely influential band continues to grow and spread like wildfire as the years go on. It is a great honour that Matt and Scott accepted my invitation to come and destroy you all at Rituals For the Blind Dead.”

REPULSION will rip the 013 venue apart on Friday, April 15.

To find out more about REPULSION, click HERE

• BLOOD CEREMONY

Canada’s BLOOD CEREMONY delivers the finest progged-out, occult-inspired acid folk this side of the early 70s, replete with an atmospheric Wickerman vibe, Hammer Horror organ, seriously doomy guitar riffage, and the sometimes soft, sometimes soaring vocals of Alia O’Brien, who’s also BLOOD CEREMONY’s flautist.

The band’s tales of witch-cult gatherings in wooded glens, pacts made in torch-lit abbeys and Victorian magic made such a huge impact on Roadburn back in 2011, thus we’re spellbound to report that Lee Dorrian has invited BLOOD CEREMONY to return to the 2016 festival on Saturday, April 16 as part of his curated Rituals For The Occult Pt.2 event.

To find out more about BLOOD CEREMONY, click HERE

BANG

Unsung heroes of the heavy ‘70s may be plenty in number, but few can offer the sweetness of groove that BANG bring to the stage, and we’re thrilled to announce they’ll be playing their very first European show ever at Roadburn 2016!

Says BANG of playing Roadburn, “We are incredibly excited to play Roadburn and for BANG to rock Europe for the first time. We know we have a lot of fans across the pond who are excited as well, and it’s going to be amazing to connect to that audience. We even heard they have amps over there that go to 11, so we will be extra loud!”

Roadburn 2016: With the Dead and Death Alley Added to Lineup

Posted in Whathaveyou on October 30th, 2015 by JJ Koczan

I was hoping I’d get around to posting my interview with Lee Dorrian before With the Dead were announced for Roadburn 2016. He didn’t come right out and say that his new, post-Cathedral project would be taking part in his curated day at the fest, but he didn’t not say it either, and that was good enough for me. So it goes. If you haven’t heard it yet, With the Dead‘s self-titled debut (review pending) is excellent. All rolling groove, dirty as hell, low on bullshit and high on pills.

So yeah, maybe it’s not a huge surprise they’re playing, but still cool. A special set from Death Alley, whose debut, Black Magick Boogieland (review here), I had on just the other day on the way to work because nothing else seemed to be waking me up billed as “And Friends” reminds me of the tribute to Selim Lemouchi at the fest in 2014 that was among the most moving moments I’ve ever witnessed there, especially with Farida Lemouchi, Selim‘s sister and former vocalist of The Devil’s Blood, involved. But she sings a guest spot on Death Alley‘s LP as well, and I expect with the material from their record it’ll be a rager through and through.

For details, we turn to the PR wire:

WITH THE DEAD added to Lee Dorrian’s curated event, plus special DEATH ALLEY set confirmed

First confirmed live appearance for WITH THE DEAD
DEATH ALLEY will perform a special set featuring guest musicians including Farida Lemouchi

WITH THE DEAD

When we invited Lee Dorrian to be our 2016 curator, WITH THE DEAD was yet to be unleashed on the world. As snippets were released, and excitement mounted, we held out a bit of hope that WITH THE DEAD would make the transition from studio project to fully fledged live band.

Lee commented: “I am extremely pleased to announce the very first confirmed live appearance of my new band WITH THE DEAD. We will be grimacing the main stage of 013 at my curated event, Rituals For The Blind Dead, on Friday 15th April. Following the overwhelmingly positive response to the release our debut album, we felt the need to show our gratitude and commit to some special live performances. With me being so involved in Roadburn 2016, it seemed like the perfect opportunity for us to step up to the altar of heaviness and sacrifice our lamented souls to all in attendance.”

For the uninitiated, the WITH THE DEAD album was put together by an unholy trinity of doom – with individual reputations for contributing to some of the most bowel shakingly heavy output of the last twenty years. Dorrian joined forces with Tim Bagshaw (Electric Wizard, Ramesses, Serpentine Path) and Mark Greening (Electric Wizard, Ramesses) to lay down the six tracks that make up With The Dead’s self titled debut.

WITH THE DEAD have swaggered into 2015 without much in the way of fanfare, but they’re already creating enormous waves. With further announcements due as to exactly how these songs will be brought to life, we’re already beyond excited to see this nihilistic doom live at Roadburn 2016.

DEATH ALLEY

Spawned from the filthy sewers and dark basements of Amsterdam, The Netherlands, DEATH ALLEY deliver heavy punked-out proto-metal in spades. The band, revolving around former The Devil’s Blood guitarist Oeds Beydals and ex-members of Gewapend Beton and Mühr, released one the best heavy rock debuts of 2015, Black Magick Boogieland.

As there’s such a bond between DEATH ALLEY and Roadburn – the band not only played the 2014 Hard Rock Hideout, based on the Over Under / Dead Man’s Bones’ 7, while Mühr did their final show, Oeds Beydals was also invited for a jam session at Mikael Åkerfeldt’s curated event, and payed a very poignant tribute to Selim Lemouchi on the main stage with the remaining enemies – DEATH ALLEY will come full circle at Roadburn 2016.

Bringing Farida Lemouchi to the 2016 festival, plus inviting some other assorted friends for their performance as well, we can only expect a very special set by DEATH ALLEY, revolving around compelling tracks like Supernatural Predator.
Alongside DEATH ALLEY’s Roadburn performance, Van Records will put out Oeds Beydals’ Roadburn 2014 performance on vinyl too, turning Roadburn 2016 into a benchmark moment for DEATH ALLEY!

Roadburn 2016: Scott Kelly, Steve Von Till, Midnight, Jakob, Ecstatic Vision, Black Moon Circle and More Added to Lineup

Posted in Whathaveyou on October 16th, 2015 by JJ Koczan

What is this, the third, maybe fourth, announcement for the lineup of Roadburn 2016? As of this week we’re still half a year out from the launch of the festival next April in the Netherlands and I’m already starting to get that gosh-I-hope-I-get-to-go ache. Seems early for such things, but here we are, barely ankle-deep into the lineup and it’s only becoming a more and more severe issue. Steve Von Till and Scott Kelly from Neurosis added for solo sets? At the church, no less? That’s not even fair.

Never mind righteous space heavy of Black Moon Circle or the saw-it-coming-from-a-mile-away-but-it’s-still-right-on addition of Ecstatic Vision to the bill, the raw fuckery of Midnight? I feel like Roadburn 2016 could probably call it a day, maybe let Lee Dorrian add another couple of acts to his curated stage, and anyone who went would call the fest a win. As I say, it’s getting severe.

And it’s still just the beginning.

From the PR wire:

New additions to Roadburn 2016 including Scott Kelly, Steve Von Till, Midnight, and Jakob

  • SCOTT KELLY & STEVE VON TILL to play individual solo shows
  • Ambient post-rockers, JAKOB will perform
  • Heavy metal outlaws, MIDNIGHT, make their Roadburn debut
  • Plus more acts including Kenn Nardi and Ecstatic Vision

SCOTT KELLY & STEVE VON TILL

Neurosis are so much more than a band. At times, they seem to be at the heart of a sentient organism, fully functioning all by itself, with the activities of their members and of the entire Neurot family constituting the remaining organs and limbs of this fascinating creature. None of those activities are more deeply connected and enwrapped around that ever-beating heart than the solo careers of guitarists/vocalists SCOTT KELLY and STEVE VON TILL themselves. Therefore, it is but natural that the Neurosis 30th anniversary celebrations that will take place at Roadburn will also include a typically intimate and profoundly touching solo performance by each of the two musicians.

SCOTT KELLY and STEVE VON TILL will therefore complete the weekend-long Neurosis anniversary experience with both performances taking place at the Het Patronaat on Friday, April 15th. Each of them will be a life unto itself that must not be missed.

To find out more about Scott Kelly & Steve Von Till at Roadburn, click HERE

JAKOB

JAKOB will travel from far, far away to provide you with a moment of introversion – an hour of a special kind of beauty filtering through the weekend haze – all the way from their beautiful coastal hometown of Napier, New Zealand, but it will surely be as worthy for them as it will for us, when the connection is established between band and audience. JAKOB’s is a sharp beauty, good-natured but with a lingering, riff-ridden menace to it; soothing, but able to stay in your memory for a long time after you experience it. JAKOB will play Roadburn on Sunday April 17th.

To find out more about JAKOB click HERE

MIDNIGHT

The twisted, bastard offspring of a Venom, Motörhead and Sodom threesome of debauchery, complete with a devil-may-care attitude which GG Allin himself would surely have been proud of, Cleveland’s MIDNIGHT might just provide the most reckless amount of fun you can have at a concert without breaking the law, or at least too many of them. Pack your leather jackets, bulletbelts and facemasks, because you’ll surely need them when MIDNIGHT take you to hell (…on the wings of Satan!) on Friday, April 15th, at the 013 venue. Steel won’t be stopped!

KENN NARDI

Former Anacrusis guitarist/vocalist KENN NARDI brings his forward-thinking metal to the stages of Roadburn on Saturday April 16th. Between 1988 and 1993, in an era when thrash was anything but dark or progressive, Anacrusis produced four critically-acclaimed albums that were heralded as cornerstones of dark, angular, progressive thrash. The band dissolved shortly after releasing their fourth and final album, Screams And Whisper and this performance will mark NARDI’s first show in Holland since Anacrusis’ final original-era performance in 1993. A singer/songwriter at heart, but with a background in metal, hardcore/punk and early gothic rock, Nardi is an innovator whose works still resonate to this day. He will be performing a wealth of material from the Anacrusis catalog along with selected solo tracks.

Roadburn 2016 Announces Ticket On-Sale Date; Adds Amenra, The Skull, Green Carnation, and More to Lineup

Posted in Whathaveyou on September 10th, 2015 by JJ Koczan

Much good news coming out of the Roadburn 2016 camp today, and multifaceted. First, tickets will be on sale on Oct. 2. That’s a good one to know. Second, Becky Cloonan has been announced as the official artist of Roadburn 2016, and her poster for the fest, which you can see below, rules. Would and probably will look very cool on a t-shirt. Third, the lineup has grown even richer and broader, from neofolk to death metal to proggy extremity with the likes of Of the Wand and the Moon, Amenra, The Skull and Green Carnation added.

The Skull being added isn’t much of a surprise after the initial announcement of their Spring 2016 European tour last month, but confirmation is always nice anyhow, and a return from Amenra is most welcome. I always dug those Green Carnation records too, so hopefully Tchort brings out some of that stuff from his weirdo prog-death outfit. There’s a lot, and I mean a lot to get to, so I won’t delay.

NEW LINEUP ADDITIONS

With a sonic arsenal behind them that covers a broad spectrum of emotive intricacies, AMENRA are perfectly placed to showcase their diversity at Roadburn 2016. The performances at Roadburn are currently the only planned live outings for AMENRA in 2016: an acoustic set, with an expanded band of musicians, immediately before Neurosis on the Saturday, and again taking to the main stage on the Sunday night to play an electric set.

Breathing new life into one of doom’s most enduring legacies, THE SKULL will also play Roadburn 2016 twice. On Thursday, April 14 THE SKULL will perform songs from For Those Which Are Asleep (out on Tee Pee records), plus classic Trouble, 90s era tracks. The following day, the band will hark back to Trouble’s Metal Blade years, only playing songs from Psalm 9, The Skull and Run To The Light.

Norwegian avant-garde progsters GREEN CARNATION will perform Light of Day, Days of Darkness in its entirety on Sunday, April 17. 2016 marks the fifteen year anniversary of this epic, prog, avant-metal masterpiece. “The people involved in this are all buzzing”, says founder / guitarist Tchort, “Light of Day, Day of Darkness is a very special album in many different ways for so many people, and we are looking forward to start rehearsing this beast live.”

We’re elated to announce the international return of Belgium’s legendary riders of the apocalypse, LA MUERTE, at Roadburn 2016. LA MUERTE’s massacre thrashed Europe and the UK in the 80’s, resulting in a John Peel Session at the BBC, full pages of interviews in Melody Maker, and, infamously, bomb threats in Paris by extremists French Catholics for the track Ecoute cette Prière, before eventually disbanding in 1994. They will make their highly anticipated return at the 013 venue, for eager fans at Roadburn.

Denmark’s OF THE WAND AND THE MOON has become a leading staple of contemporary neofolk; albums such as 2011’s The Lone Descent are widely regarded as masterpieces. Heavily thriving on Nordic mythological influences, with lyrics mainly in Danish and English, Kim Larsen’s melancholic, often acoustic take on the genre paints devastating portraits of irreconcilable loss, love and death in a traditional romantic sense.
OF THE WAND AND THE MOON will play Incubate Festival in Tilburg this month. To find out more about their performance at Roadburn 2016, click HERE.

Over the past two decades DER BLUTHARSCH AND THE INFINITE CHURCH OF THE LEADING HAND’s Albin Julius found his alchemical, musical perfection: parts krautrock, psychedelia, and dark experimentalism. Theatrical and tense, sonically dark and perverse, ritualistic and confusing – don’t miss out on Albin Julius’ mushroom aesthetics on Thursday, April 14, when DER BLUTHARSCH AND THE INFINITE CHURCH OF THE LEADING HAND will celebrate their 20th anniversary. To find out more about their performance at Roadburn 2016, click HERE.

Uncompromising, unsettling, utterly confounding, and heavily funeralizing Black Metal, London’s LYCHGATE – with Esoteric’s Greg Chandler on vocals – know how to craft a vibe. Let LYCHGATE drag you deeply down the rabbit hole on Friday, April 15, when they play An Antidote for the Glass Pill in full, and employ the church-organ to full effect on stage for the first time ever.

CHAOS ECHOES create an aesthetically complex body of work that sweeps death metal into a black hole of deconstructed improvisations. To find out more about their performance at Roadburn 2016, click HERE.

BECKY CLOONAN

We at Roadburn are ecstatically proud to unveil the official artwork for Roadburn 2016, lovingly wrought by acclaimed comic-book illustrator BECKY CLOONAN – who will be following in the illustrious footsteps of such predecessors as Michel Langevin, Costin Chioreanu, and Arik Roper.

CLOONAN’s mix of clean, bold lines mixed with subtle intricacies, Manga-influenced angularity and artful use of chiaroscuro and colour has marked her out as an artist to pay serious attention to. Having provided stunning illustrations for a new edition of Bram Stoker’s immortal Dracula, collaborated with My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way on the art for his Dark Horse miniseries The True Lives Of The Fabulous Killjoy, and become the first woman to draw DC’s Batman – CLOONAN has already left an indelible mark on the comic book world

Her intricate linework, art-deco sensibilities and dark psychedelic edge make her the perfect match for Roadburn, with her comics background providing a fresh edge to the Roadburn aesthetic. She’ll be providing the official poster art for Roadburn 2016 along with four individual day posters – yet to be revealed – and taking part in the official exhibition of art at Projectspace Tilburg – Gust van Dijk.
