Desertfest London 2023 Adds More Than 40 Bands; Yes, for Real.

Posted in Whathaveyou on December 2nd, 2022 by JJ Koczan

I mean, what can you say to this other than ‘can I come?’ I’ve known this festival was capable of some real-deal shit over the last decade, but this is absolutely epic, which is a word I do my best to avoid. And they end it by saying there’s more to come. God damn. Really. God damn.

Wow.

Desertfest London announce over 40 bands for 2023

Friday 5th May – Sunday 7th May 2023 | Weekend Tickets on sale now

BUY TICKETS HERE: https://www.desertfest.co.uk/

Desertfest London is rounding off the year with an ear-shattering bang, announcing a mammoth 43 artists to their 2023 line-up. Joining the likes of Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats, Graveyard, Kadavar and Church of Misery, the Camden-based festival also welcomes back Corrosion of Conformity as headliners.

Pioneers of a groove-laden sound that is undeniably their own, Corrosion of Conformity have not been back on UK soil since 2018 so expect big, loud and memorable things from their appearance at Desertfest next year. Corrosion of Conformity have been due to play the event since 2020 – making their return one of the most widely requested in the event’s history.

Japan’s own avant-garde maestros of down-tuned psychedelia Boris leap over to London alongside the crushingly loud tones of NOLA’s own Crowbar. One of the most exciting bands in recent memory King Buffalo, make their long-awaited debut plus Desertfest favourites, Weedeater are back after five long years of chugging whiskey lord-knows-where.

The pace moves up a notch with New York City’s noise-rock guru’s Unsane and British punk-legends Discharge, all of whom bring a detour from the slow’n’low sounds the festival is best recognised for. Montreal’s Big | Brave will play the festival for the first time showcasing their experimental and minimalist take on the notion of ‘heavy’, whilst the doors to the Church of The Cosmic Skull are open, as they ask Desertfest revellers to join them in a union unlike any other.

Desertfest also warmly welcomes noise from STAKE, British anti-fascist black metallers Dawn Ray’d and London’s loudest duo Tuskar as well as some of the best recent stoner acts in the form of Telekinetic Yeti, Weedpecker & Great Electric Quest. Elsewhere the weekend will also see Wren, The Necromancers, Dommengang, Samavayo, Morass of Molasses, Sum of R & GNOB offer up unique live performances.

Rounding off this beast of an announcement are Acid Mammoth, Deatchant, Zetra, Trevor’s Head, Our Man in The Bronze Age, Wyatt E., Iron Jinn, Mr Bison, Troy The Band, Oreyeon, Warren Schoenbright, Early Moods, Longheads, Terror Cosmico, Thunder Horse, TONS, Vinnum Sabbathi, Bloodswamp, The Age of Truth, Earl of Hell and Black Groove.

Weekend Tickets for Desertfest London 2023 are on-sale now via www.desertfest.co.uk
with more acts still to be announced.

Day splits and day tickets will be on sale from January.

Weedeater Announce November Tour Dates

Posted in Whathaveyou on October 18th, 2022 by JJ Koczan

Some day, Weedeater aren’t going to be a band anymore, and you’re going to be sorry you only saw them 10 or 15 times. In all seriousness, there are few news stories that, on my end coordinating, putting together the back end, SEO — all that useless bullshit I do for this site, probably incorrectly, that isn’t actually the writing — are as easy to put together as Weedeater announcing a tour. I don’t know how many times this exact story has lumbered down the PR wire like the band’s still-worth-showing-up-to-see-live riffage in the last seven years since their last record came out, but I sure remember the last couple years when it didn’t, and I’m glad as hell it can do so once more.

Telekinetic Yeti are returning tour partners for the North Carolinian sludge mainstays — Tone Deaf Touring pairs its acts well — and Donnie Doolittle will open the shows. You can see the singularly badass poster art by Brian Mercer below — it was a deciding factor in my putting this together at all, even with the convenience of being able to cut and paste links and all that — followed of course by the dates themselves, which find the three-piece heading up and back down the East Coast around a stop at Snowblind Fest in Atlanta, with which I’d like to be friends.

Goes like this:

Heavy Psych Sounds Fest California Announces Day Splits

Posted in Whathaveyou on April 14th, 2022 by JJ Koczan

You don’t need much more here than the list of bands, which is its own excuse for being. Italian label Heavy Psych Sounds returns to the States at the end of next month with Heavy Psych Sounds Fests in Los Angeles and San Francisco. With the day-splits announced, you get a little more sense of how the two nights in two cities will function (it’s not an insignificant drive from one to the other, mind you) and share bands, but any way you go, you don’t lose, whether you’re looking at Dead Meadow and Weedeater headlining, the appearances of long-running acts like 16 and Danava and Nebula, or relative newcomers in Kadabra or Mountain Tamer and others from the label’s ever-expanding roster of talent.

It’s a fucking solid two day lineup. Doesn’t look completely overwhelming. Looks like a party, which is exactly what I expect it will be for those fortunate enough to be in attendance. Maybe that’s you. If so, cheers. I hear Bongzilla like it if you bring them weed.

Weedeater Announce US Tour Dates

Posted in Whathaveyou on March 10th, 2022 by JJ Koczan

There aren’t many places Weedeater haven’t been and much they haven’t done, but they keep breaking out the riffs and rolling them from town to town, now more than 20 years on from their debut album. They’ve got shows lined up in the Southeast for April, and that run will take them into the Midwest before they turn back toward home in North Carolina, from where they’ll pick up again in May and head west to make it to the Heavy Psych Sounds festivals in San Francisco and Los Angeles. After that, it’s back east again on the quick to make it to Arkansas for Mutants of the Monster on June 3. That’s gonna be a long bit of driving for whoever’s behind the wheel, but at least there’s a day off between Phoenix and Oklahoma City. Woof.

Weedeater‘s most recent album was 2015’s Goliathan (review here), and they’ve basically been on tour ever since, plague notwithstanding. Seems to me that if there’s a band on the planet who should probably put out a live record or 10, it’s these guys, but I’ve heard no such murmurings in that regard. Alas, you gotta show up if you want the experience, and Weedeater live is most certainly that.

Hope gas gets cheaper:

Heavy Psych Sounds Fest California Lineup Finalized

Posted in Whathaveyou on February 2nd, 2022 by JJ Koczan

Well this looks pretty great. Heavy Psych Sounds-branded festivals are a regular feature across the regular-featuresphere in Europe, but far rarer in the US. The Rome-based imprint has teamed with SubliminalSF and SOS Booking to put on two nights in two cities presented as Heavy Psych Sounds Fest California 2022, and the names included are serious gosh darn business. Dead MeadowWeedeaterBongzillaNebulaThe Atomic Bitchwax. Fucking a. You got Danava and 16 and heck I hope they play back-to-back just because that would be amazing. Imagine that for a second.

The bill doesn’t stop there with the righteousness, which if you know if you either heard the Kadabra debut album last year or watched Mountain Tamer‘s ‘Live in the Mojave Desert’ stream. Remember that? Yeah you do. Someone needs to tell Ryan Jones it’s time for season two.

This was my entire social media feed the other day, the lineup and poster. The Bitchwax and Weedeater are the new adds to finish out the lineup, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they announced tour dates together out west to get to CA. I don’t know that, mind you, but the two East Coast veteran acts have toured together before and it’s not outside the realm of possibility they’d do so again. Just a thought. Hell, let ’em bring High Reeper too.

Party hearty. Or hardy. Whatever. Just party and keep doing that:

Weedeater Announce August Tour Dates

Posted in Whathaveyou on June 14th, 2021 by JJ Koczan

weedeater

By my calendar, the last time Weedeater announced a tour was Jan. 2020. I said it barely qualified as news that they were touring, but for the fact that they were taking out The Atomic Bitchwax and Worshipper as well. I even used the same Scott Kinkade photo. The humdrum nature of that post, and the fact that it was Jan. 20, 2020, that it went up, is laughable now. Sad and laughable.

So yes, Weedeater have announced a stretch of dates in August, mostly in the Southeast heading out from their North Carolina homebase, and it’s definitely news. Also of note is that the band was recently confirmed for SonicBlast Fest 2022 in Portugal, so this is for sure not the last bit of touring they’ll do. Unless of course it is, because the universe as we’ve learned is an unpredictable place, and sometimes reality just turns into the biggest asshole ever. In any case, if you’ve never seen them, they’re a mainstay for a reason, and their live performance is the reason. They are worth appreciating.

The dates follow here as per social media. Tickets are available and the tour’s put together by Tone Deaf.

SonicBlast Fest 2022 Lineup Announced: Electric Wizard, Weedeater, 1000mods & More to Play

Posted in Whathaveyou on June 10th, 2021 by JJ Koczan

SonicBlast Fest announced its 2021 edition was being postponed at the end of the month, and already they’re turning around and making a first announcement for 2022. That’s kind of comforting. Some of these acts — looking at you, Psychlona — have been waiting to play the Portugal-based festival since being announced for 2020 — but barring disaster, there’s a reasonable expectation that 2022 might be a return year, so in addition to them, SonicBlast Fest 2022 is rolling out the formidable likes of Green LungElectric WizardPentagramWeedeater, 1000modsThe MachineSamavayoThe Devil and the Almighty BluesTia CarreraSlift, and a ton of others with more to come. If you’re going to do a thing, get in there and do it.

Tickets are on sale now, or if you’ve already got them either for 2020 or 2021, they’ll carry over. 2020 was supposed to be my year to hit this fest, as well as a whole bunch of others. So it goes. If you make it to Âncora for the three-dayer next August, you go with my respect and admiration, and no shortage of jealousy.

Lineup info follows here, as per socials:

Psycho Las Vegas 2021 Announces Lineup

Posted in Whathaveyou on May 24th, 2021 by JJ Koczan

If you’re looking for insight into the Psycho Las Vegas 2021 lineup, I have precious little to offer. What started out being accused of being an American answer to Roadburn has become a spectacle unto itself, operating at a scale that’s more in competition with the likes of a heavy metal Riot Fest or Coachella, and has likewise developed a community of its own. As for what catches my eye here, Cephalic Carnage for sure, as well as a few carryovers from what would’ve been 2020, and the likes of The Sword, who I guess are back together now? Fair enough. Oh, and the GZA, for good measure. Katatonia and Mercyful Fate and Elder and a couple others aren’t making the trip, but there’s certainly plenty here to occupy your weekend. If the Vegas-in-August heat don’t melt your brains, the riffs surely will.

What’s a guy gotta do to get invited to do a DJ set at Psycho Las Vegas? I’m gonna send Nate Carson an email and see if he’s got any tips.

Ty Segall next to Satyricon. Fatso Jetson and Profanatica. Immolation and Dengue Fever. The Flaming Lips and Cannibal Corpse. If you’re asking for it to make sense, you’re doing Psycho wrong. This is an event that defines its own parameters.

Approach thusly:
