Desertfest London 2017: Individual Day Schedules Announced

Posted in Whathaveyou on January 30th, 2017 by JJ Koczan

I have no problem admitting to feeling overwhelmed looking at the full lineup and individual day splits for Desertfest London 2017. I mean, seriously. Look at that poster. What a way to spend a weekend.

Likewise, I have few grand reflections to offer in light of that overwhelming feeling, except perhaps to take a step back and be massively impressed at how much this event has grown in just six incarnations. Along with Desertfest Berlin, the London edition has become an anchor not only for the UK heavy rock underground — which is well represented here as ever in Elephant TreeBlack SpidersStubbVodunPigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs PigsTerminal CheesecakeChubby Thunderous Bad Kush MastersMammoth Weed Wizard Bastard, and so on — but for bands from abroad as well. You’ll note the three headliners: two American, one Norwegian, and the next line down on the poster is two Swedish, one American. Desertfest London 2017’s reach feels wider than ever. Staring at the final lineup, it’s clear just how much of a big fucking deal this festival has become.

Wish I could be there to see it.

Here’s the announcement of the individual day lineups from their website:

desertfest london 2017

DESERTFEST 2017 DAY SPLITS AND DAY TICKETS ARE HERE!

Finally, the Desertfest 2017 day and stage splits are here, along with individual day tickets. It’s the point of the year where you can start planning the weekend, you can imagine the sets in your head and you can curse those god damned clashes.

Last things first, let’s get straight to that insane Sunday main-stage. To celebrate The Roundhouse joining the Desertfest family, we made their debut appearance something special. Not only will stoner doom icons Sleep be topping the bill, but the Roundhouse hosts a full bill of huge acts. Candlemass, with over three decades of underground acclaim to their name, bring the epic doom metal. USA’s Wolves in the Throne Room bring the atmospheric black metal. Traditional doom metal stalwarts Saint Vitus bring the classic riffs. And how about this for a ‘curtain jerker’? Bongzilla bring the raw weed metal for their second show of the weekend; more on the first later.

It’s not just about the Sunday though. Friday’s stage at the Electric Ballroom is headlined by returning heroes Slo Burn whose short run in the mid 90s furthered the then fledgling stoner rock scene. One band they surely had an impact on is Lowrider, who play Europe’s finest stoner rock alongside them. Ukraine’s Stoned Jesus celebrate their resonant album Seven Thunders Roar, and 1000Mods and Pontiak round up the main stage on the Friday.

The Electric Ballroom on Saturday will be swarming with Turbojugends as death-punk grandmasters Turbonegro turn Camden into party central. John Garcia sticks around for a solo show, sure to feature classics from his years of nonstop mastery in the stoner rock scene. Sheffield’s rock and roll five piece Black Spiders visit London for one last time on their farewell tour, with Satan’s Satyrs and Avon rounding up the main stage.

As ever though, it doesn’t stop at the main stages. Our regular partners have delivered three stages with diverse lineups. Human_Disease_Promo and When Planets Collide take over The Underworld on Saturday in a bill headlined by Bongzilla with a special set celebrating the band’s early work. The Quietus stage is led by synth wavers Zombi, and Nightshift Promotions bring an eclectic mix led by Hungary’s Apey & the Pea. To be honest, just stick a pin in the lineup poster and you’re guaranteed a good time.

For those who can’t make the full weekend, we have a limited number of individual day tickets. Priced at £40 for Friday tickets, £40 for Saturday tickets and £45 for Sunday tickets, links are below.

So there we have it. Our final lineup for Desertfest 2017. We hope you’re as excited as we are to get back to Camden this April and riff London to the ground.

Freak Valley 2017: Salem’s Pot, Vodun, Kikagaku Moyo, MaidaVale and The Brew Added

Posted in Whathaveyou on October 31st, 2016 by JJ Koczan

Cool to see Freak Valley 2017 get a little weird in its early going. If you want to do that, adding bands like Sweden’s Salem’s Pot and London’s Vodun is a pretty good way to go, and to be honest I doubt Kikagaku Moyo will disappoint as regards freakout either, so right on. The German fest made its first lineup announcement earlier this month with Ufomammut joining the bill, and it further bodes well that this batch arrives together, since it shows some of the sonic diversity of the fest in a way that a more piecemeal, one-at-a-time approach wouldn’t really be able to highlight. Nothing to do at this point but sit back and watch these fests take shape.

You got plans for next June? I don’t. Time to start daydreaming, I think.

Fest announcement follows:

freak-valley-2017-bands-poster-700

We are ready to announce 5 more mindblowing bands to join UFOMAMMUT to the 2017 FREAK VALLEY FESTIVAL line-up before online ticket sale will start Monday Oct. 31st 6pm cet. Here we go!!

Salem’s Pot [SW]
Horror-obsessed Swedish doom rockers will bring their wild and weird sounds, space synths swirling beneath chugging guitar riffs, Thin Lizzy licks, and Knate’s cracked vocal delivery over Freak Valley. Their show will be presented by Rockblog Bluesspot.

The Brew [UK]
We are truly honoured that finally UK’s Powertrio The Brew will play their finest 70ies-, Power- und Bluesrock at Freak Valley. A killer live act! We cannot wait!!

Kikagaku Moyo [JP]
Japanese Psychedelic Rockers Kikagaku Moyo call their sound “psychedelic” because it encompasses a broad spectrum of influence. Their music incorporates elements of classical Indian music, Kraut Rock, Tradit ional Folk, and 70s Rock. Most importantly their music is about freedom of the mind and body and building a bridge between the supernatural and the present. Improvisation is a key element to their sound. Kikagaku Moyo play music to ignite your soul and foster euphoria. Their songs will compel you to let your hair down, throw your arms in the air and smile.

MaidaVale [SW]
The Swedish female four-piece with influences ranging over decades, have created a sound based in the late 60’s/early 70’s music scene. With a modern take on blues rock the band have captured many audiences with their heavy and psychedelic vibes, and developed into a highly acclaimed live act with the ability to spellbind and enthrall audiences.

Vodun [UK]
V?D?N are a heavy, weird & soulful, afro-futuristic tribe from London – A raw and powerful slice of voodoo fuelled turbo-metal riffage not to be missed. Featuring two members of one of London’s finest underground bands, Invasion, who disbanded in 2011, Vodun have taken the basic blueprint of that band, added a huge West African voodoo influence and ramped up the intensity across the board. They rock like no one else, and are also a mesmerising live experience.

Desertfest London 2017 First Announcements: Turbonegro Headlining; Samsara Blues Experiment, Elephant Tree & More to Play

Posted in Whathaveyou on October 14th, 2016 by JJ Koczan

Desertfest London 2017 joins the Spring festival season fray with its first round of lineup announcements. Set for April 28-30 in its traditional home of Camden Town in London, the sixth incarnation of one of the two founding Desertfests will include a headlining set from Turbonegro, as well as appearances from Samsara Blues Experiment, who seem to be set on making a return to activity as we head into the New Year that I’ll be very interested in seeing how it plays out, plus blues-cycle duo The Picturebooks, Virginia’s Satan’s Satyrs, tribalists Vodun, Yuri Gargarin, Mammoth Storm, and London’s own Elephant Tree, whose 2016 self-titled debut (review here) stands among the year’s best in heavy rock. Bit of a no-brainer there, so I guess you might as well get the announcement out of the way early.

Not really looking forward to six months of cartoon-titty posters, but so it goes. Here’s word from the fest:

desertfest-london-2017-first-poster

DESERTFEST LONDON: first bands announced; Turbonegro to headline the 2017 edition!

After a momentous fifth year anniversary, DESERTFEST LONDON proudly returns in 2017. As the festival grows from strength to strength, each year offers up a new challenge to bring a truly unique and amplified weekend to Camden Town. Desertfest aims to not only expand in all areas, but also to exceed expectations, and this year’s lineup is set to do just that.

The first headliner for 2017 is one of the most ludicrously high voltage, straight-up party bands in the history of rock’n’roll: Norway’s very own TURBONEGRO will be bringing their blend of high octane deathpunk to Desertfest 2017, for their first performance ever at the festival!

Joining them on the bill are one of the most requested Desertfest acts, German psych stalwarts SAMSARA BLUES EXPERIMENT, whose expert blend of stoner rock, psychedelic blues and Indian raga will bring some mind-bending goodness to the weekend’s trip.

THE PICTUREBOOKS will also be eagerly offering up their diverse alt-rock sound. The duo have pushed boundaries with their style – from drumming with mallets to building their own instruments, their live performances unquestionably follow suit and will not disappoint.

Virginia’s crème-de la-crème of thrash SATAN SATYR’S have effortlessly propelled themselves to cult status by paving the way for that true hard-attack heavy rock, making them stand out from a sea of peers who are just trying to hit half as hard.

VODUN are quickly gaining traction as one of those “must see” bands, and Desertfest is thrilled to show our loyal family as to why. An overwhelming talent of primal, genre-bending, heavy afro-soul rock – they’re not easy to describe, but being labelled one of the best new rock acts on the planet may help paint the picture. Swedish space rock cosmonauts YURI GAGARIN will also join the 2017 proceedings to launch revellers into a hypnotic otherworldly journey, alongside doom-drone power trio MAMMOTH STORM, who will be ready to batter out any cobwebs with a sonic tidal wave of riffs. Last but not least, is London’s very own ELEPHANT TREE with their melodic and weighty riffs that will rattle down on listeners like a stampede.

We are proud, and excited, for what next year has in store. But this is only the tip of the iceberg as there is much, much more to come. Stay tuned!

Desertfest Belgium 2016: Uncle Acid, Coogans Bluff, Vodun, Wolvennest and Black Swarm Added

Posted in Whathaveyou on June 2nd, 2016 by JJ Koczan

desertfest belgium 2016 header

Our friends at Desertfest Belgium 2016 might be understating it somewhat when they refer to Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats as a ‘crowd-pleaser,’ but the point still stands. The UK outfit are every bit worthy of holding near-top position on the poster for the event, next to Pentagram, and wherever they end up on the final bill, they’re a damn good get. Also joining the lineup today are UK upstarts Vodun, Germany’s Coogans Bluff, and Wolvennest and Black Swarm, assuring that Desertfest Belgium 2016 gets its due course of offbeat vibes and varying swaths of heavy. You can see the full lineup below. It already looks like a killer weekend, and I have the feeling they’re not even close to done compiling it.

From the PR wire:

desertfest belgium 2016 new poster-700

DF Antwerp 2016 ADDS UNCLE ACID, COOGANS BLUFF & more!

We’ve enjoyed an overwhelming load of good vibes following our first band announcements, and we expect no less from this next fresh batch. There’s something here for everyone. You want a crowd pleaser? How’s UNCLE ACID & THE DEADBEATS pleasing ya! You want crazy and original? COOGANS BLUFF will have you covered. You want the potential surprise exploding live hit of this year’s festival? We’re putting our bets on VODUN’s blend of metal and wailing soul vocals. And since we’re Belgian after all (and proud of it, dammit!), we’ve added heavy droners WOLVENNEST and singular metalheads BLACK SWARM to the line-up.

Are you hungry for more? You better be, because the next update’s only a few weeks away!

UNCLE ACID & THE DEADBEATS

Ever since their debut album hit the scene in a cloud of menacing mystery, Uncle Acid & the Deadbeats have been pulling an evergrowing fanbase of metal and rock fans alike into their own self-created world. Their heavy psychedelia has been likened to The Beatles, had they followed their own helter skelter down into the darkest recesses of the 1970s.
Call them the Bong Lennon or the Crack Sabbath – in essence they’re a pop band, singing of death and murder in alluring vocal harmonies.

COOGANS BLUFF

They have been called “Retro”, but can you name any other band that combines krautrock, prog, psychedelic, stoner and bluesrock in such an unusual way? Coogans Bluff is a band that knows how to combine the best of all these genres, while still showing fresh and daring ideas. The band shows a very personal sense of humor in their image. However, their highly original brand of music is played with pure dedication. All hail the tinfoil hats!

VODUN

This one’s going to blow your mind… Vodun hails from London, a power trio that delivers crushing metal riffs as a backbone for some high-energy soulful wailing. MOJO magazine describes them as “Aretha Franklin fronting Royal Blood after imbibing ayahuasca”, but even that won’t prepare you for the onslaught of dark ritual madness these three bring to the stage. Amidst the rushing screams of Mother Earth, the pounding drums of Ouidah, the markets of Lomé and the open heart of Erzulie, there exists VODUN!

WOLVENNEST

Wolvennest (that’s Dutch for “Wolf’s nest”) is a musical joint venture between Kirby Michel (La Muerte), Corvus von Burtle (Cult Of Erinyes) and Marc De Backer (Mongolito), a distinctive blend of guitar loops, repetitive beats, synthesizers keys mixed with darkened hypnotic ambient vocal sounds. The resulting glorious mess is a highly original mix of seventies Krautrock and nineties Norwegian Black Metal.

BLACK SWARM

Black Swarm entered the Belgian underground metal scene in 2011. With only 6 songs they took to the stage, and immediately started to rally a fanbase consisting in- and outside the metalhead community. Watch out for their flamboyant singer Sam De Roeck though… he’s known to give the crowd just “a little more” than they bargained for when he gets in the mood!

Vodun Post New Video for “Minos Army”

Posted in Bootleg Theater on August 17th, 2015 by JJ Koczan

vodun

Fast-paced London trio Vodun continue to excite with their new digital single, “Minos Army.” After issuing their debut EP, Eat up the Sun, on Superhot Records in 2013, the band has hooked up with Riff Rock Records for the “Minos Army” unveiling, and the quick-riffed track arrives complete with an animated video that shows copious tribe-on-colonial-oppressor slaughter, artfully crafted in rhythmic swirls of color that fit well with the song itself, which provides yet another showcase for vocalist Chan, whose command at the fore of the track is all the more stunning when one considers that Vodun don’t yet have a record out.

On that issue, a 2016 release is planned for Possession, the debut from the avant metal three-piece — Chan, drummer Zel, guitarist Oli — and that will presumably also hit through Riff Rock Records as the first non-compilation release backed by the newcomer imprint. If “Minos Army” is anything to go by, it’s going to be quite an offering, the band’s voodoo-inspired aesthetics and powerful thrust already proven as one waits to behold what sort of dynamics they might be able to bring to the mix. Nothing to do but sit by and find out, unless you count watching the clip for “Minos Army,” which if you need a kick in the ass — and I think we both know you do — offers a swift one.

Enjoy:

Vodun, “Minos Army” official video

Here’s the video for our first release. Vodun’s “Minos Army”.

Directed by Federico González Camargo and mixed by Tom Dalgety (Royal Blood, Turbowolf, Band of Skulls). The track is mixed by Tom Dalgety (Royal Blood, Turbowolf, Band of Skulls).

Available now via http://riffrockrecords.co.uk and all good streaming services.

Walk with the Vodun…

Heavy-Afro-Psych trio Vodun are the first signing to Riff Rock Records. We’ll be releasing a digital single in August mixed by Tom Dalgety alongside an amazing animated video.

If you don’t know Vodun, get in there now. They’ve been destroying crowds up and down the country with their incredible live shows for the last two years and we’re overjoyed to bring them on board as the first band on the Riff Rock roster. They play a blend of afrobeat and psychedelia that’s held together with massive, Sabbath-sized riffs.

Vodun Stream New Single “Loa’s Kingdom”

Posted in audiObelisk on October 13th, 2014 by JJ Koczan

vodun (Photo by Juliette de Momigny)

After releasing their debut EP, Eat up the Sun, last year on Superhot Records, London trio Vodun — also seen as Vôdûn — issue their new single “Loa’s Kingdom” today as a free download in order to provide advance warning of their first full-length, which is due out next year. The three-piece take their cues from psychedelic rock, churning metallic tones and Afrobeat rhythmic complexity, and donning costumes and makeup for their stage show, they give a visual impression of a rawer form of Goat. The two acts actually share very little in common sonically, so don’t be fooled going into “Loa’s Kingdom,” which seems to subliminally implant its hook as it rushes past for a quick, under-three-minute listen.

vodun loa's kingdomAside from the aesthetic vigilance, it’s that ability to blend memorable songcraft and a feeling of chaos that impresses most about Vodun, who never lose control of the material even when it seems most like it’s about to fly off the rails. Beginning with heavy rocks starts and stops and a forward percussive presence, “Loa’s Kingdom” unfolds with preaching vocals and a manic build of tension that lets loose in its chorus, the bass-less trio of singer Chantal Brown, drummer Zel Kaute (also of Groan) and guitarist Oliver Martinez enacting dizzying turns before a steady nod emerges. It’s a ferocious rush, and if it takes you two or three times through before you get your head around the song, my hope is you’ll consider it worth the effort.

Vodun head out on a round of UK dates Oct. 24. Find that list and some more info on “Loa’s Kingdom” under the player below, and enjoy:

Loa’s Kingdom is about the desire to transcend into the realm of the Gods – your highest self. A kingdom only fit for supreme beings, who must first pay penance to Papa Legba, as all the spirits do. He is the first and last, the beginning and end. He is the one who will let you into their world, and the one to let you out, so be generous with your offerings…

Rising from the ashes of London’s female-fronted metal band Invasion, VODUN blends a unique concoction of heavy metal and psychedelism, while embracing the African/Caribbean culture in the fullest possible way ever. Successfully reborn as voodoo Loa spirits Oya, Ogoun and Ghede, VODUN unleashed their first EP « Eat Up The Sun » in 2013, a perfect introduction to the trio’s singular and thrilling blend of shredding guitars, blazing rhythms and soulful vocals. After completing a short UK tour, the band revealed a vibrant new single entitled “Possession” (released in 2014 via the “New Heavy Sounds Vol. 3” compilation), thus paving the way for their debut full-length, due out later in 2015. Second excerpt off VODUN’s forthcoming record, « Loa’s Kingdom » is a highly energetic ode to spiritual elevation marked by pounding riffage and incredibly catchy hooks. Get ready to unleash your inner Loa…

Vodun Post Video for “Oya”; New Single Available Now

Posted in Bootleg Theater on June 10th, 2013 by JJ Koczan

London-based psych-soul metallers Vodun — who remain hard enough to pin down that “psych-soul metal” really is the best I can come up with — release a new single today in the form of the Superhot Records two-tracker Oya. By some amazing coincidence, the three-piece have a video for the track “Oya” that’s also just been unveiled. I mean, really, what are the chances? You’d almost swear these things were planned out in advance.

Contrary to what the name Triple A Films might tell, you, the production value on the “Oya” clip is professional grade, and there’s a pretty clear narrative ark that — as ever — really takes a turn for the weird when the eggplant gets involved. I feel like I’m still trying to get a handle on what Vodun are going for, but I know it’s fascinating. Feel free to check out the video below for “Oya” and peruse the PR wire info that follows to see if you agree.

Vodun, “Oya” official video

Vodun release video for new single, “OYA”, out now on Superhot Records

London heavy-psych-soul trio Vodun have released a mind-bending video for their new download-only single, OYA, released today through Superhot Records.

OYA can be downloaded for £1 through Bandcamp: http://vodun.bandcamp.com/

The single follows the band’s self-released Eat Up the Sun EP from earlier this year. While the technical, heavy riffing can still be heard, there’s a stronger focus on powerful, soaring vocals than the guitar driven EP.

Featuring two members of one of London’s finest underground bands, Invasion, who disbanded in 2011, Vodun have taken the basic blueprint of that band, added a huge West African voodoo influence and ramped up the intensity across the board. Chan (vocals) and Zel (drums) found a kindred spirit in Oli (guitar) and emerged as a more technically accomplished, musically aggressive and energetic band.

Vodun are touring the UK with fellow Londoners Ghold in June. Catch them live on the following dates for a truly spiritual live show.

WED 26th – MANCHESTER – Wahlbar, Fallowfield
THUR 27th – LEEDS – Santiagos
FRI 28th – NOTTINGHAM – Stuck on a Name Studios
SAT 29th – LONDON – The Windmill, Brixton

Superhot Records is run by musicians Chris West (Trippy Wicked/Groan) and Leigh Jones (Groan). They are committed to bringing the best from all ends of the underground heavy music spectrum to people’s attention in a way that makes it easy for fans to find and listen to new heavy music.

Vodun Single Coming June 10 on Superhot Records

Posted in Whathaveyou on May 29th, 2013 by JJ Koczan

Quick to shirk expectation, London trio Vodun are a band for the jaded bastard in us all. Their recently-released debut Eat up the Sun draws a line somewhere between the stirring wails that stand out front of an act like Witch Mountain and the Kuti-worship that has arisen in the neo-psych theatrics of Swedish mongers Goat, only with Vodun it’s heavier and peppered by start-stop intricacies and off-time rhythmic complexities that make good on the threat that anything can happen at any time. Psychedelic soul metal? Yeah, maybe. Certainly on “Aida Wedo.”

The announcement came down the PR wire today that Vodun will follow-up Eat up the Sun with a single called OYA on Superhot Records that will be out on June 10. Behold words and free downloads for the brazen of spirit:

Superhot Records to release single, OYA by heavy psych soul trio Vodun on 10th June

Vodun, the ex-Invasion heavy-psych-soul trio from London have teamed up with Superhot Records to release their upcoming single OYA, on 10th June 2013. The band are hosting a release party on 7th June at The Victoria in Dalston, London where they will also show an exclusive screening of the video for OYA. The video and digital single will be available direct from Superhot Records, Vodun, iTunes and Spotify from Monday 10th.

Featuring two members of one London’s finest underground bands, Invasion, who disbanded in 2011, Vodun have taken the basic blueprint of that band, added a huge West African voodoo influence and ramped up the intensity across the board. Chan (vocals) and Zel (drums) found a kindred spirit in Oli (guitar) and emerged as a more technically accomplished, musically aggressive and energetic band.

OYA follows on from the self released EP Eat up the Sun; 7 songs recorded over 2 days at Holy Mountain studios. The EP was launched in April earlier this year at a sold out show in London which also doubled as their first live outing as a band. The EP showcases their particularly original blend of shredding guitars, forceful drumming and soulful vocals and is currently available direct from the band’s own Bandcamp: http://vodun.bandcamp.com/.
