Cavern Deep Premiere Philip Glass Cover “Koyaanisqatsi” in New Video

Posted in Bootleg Theater on October 11th, 2022 by JJ Koczan

cavern deep logo

The Philip Glass piece ‘Koyaanisqatsi’ takes its name from the Hopi language and translates as ‘life out of balance.’ Fair enough, and certainly more erudite than the modern English equivalent, which would probably just be ‘fucked up’ because we actually live in Idiocracy.

Speaking of classic filmmaking, “Koyaanisqatsi” was first featured on the no-words-just-images-and-music 1982 documentary Koyaanisqatsi: Life Out of Balance by Godfrey Reggio (who turned it into a trilogy), and in addition to being covered by Cows previously and featuring on The Simpsons apparently also showed up on season four of Stranger Things. Thanks, Wikipedia. So needless to say, the piece has had a fascinating life, and that continues as the Umeå, Sweden-based Cavern Deep offer their interpretation via the live video premiering below.

It’s now been over a year since Cavern Deep announced they’d finished recording their second album less than a month after the release of their self-titled debut (review here). They’d already by then proceeded through a series of videos similar to this one playing the album tracks front to back, and later last year they’d unveil a cover of Frank Zappa‘s “Muffin Man” (posted here) and an instrumental single “L B & M,” and they’ve continued writing even as there’s reportedly another original single that will follow this cover, more besides and the next album, which is apparently completely finished, but most of 2022 seems to have been geared toward getting their act together in terms of live performance; doing shows, in other words. Reasonable if, you know, you want to be a band.

“Koyaanisqatsi” is out Oct. 14 as a standalone single and gives a look at their recording process — guitar, bass, drums basic tracks together in the room, vocals and lead guitar punched in after; the editing makes that smooth in the video — and is a suitably atmospheric work for the band to take on considering what they offered throughout the self-titled. I don’t yet know what’s in store for the follow-up or when it will arrive, but after it seemed like every week of 2021 they had something new come down the wire, I’m glad to hear them put something new out. And that’s it. Simple as that.

The video for “Koyaanisqatsi” is below, followed by comment from the band:

Cavern Deep, “Koyaanisqatsi” video premiere

Max Malmer on “Koyaanisqatsi”:

“We in Cavern Deep have been working a lot behind the curtain lately to get some new music out into the world. Our second album is already mixed and mastered, and we have a lot of interesting single releases in the works as well. One of them features Thomas V. Jäger from Monolord.

So there will be a steady stream of releases from now on and this is the first of them. We have made a cover of “Koyaanisqatsi”, a Philip Glass piece that features in the movie with the same name. Our thinking was to make a cover of a non-Doom song that still Dooms more than any Doom we have ever heard.

Enjoy.”

The Obelisk Presents: Maha Sohona November European Tour

Posted in Whathaveyou on September 9th, 2022 by JJ Koczan

I dig this band. Made of Stone Recordings — which earlier this year reissued Maha Sohona‘s 2014 self-titled debut — hit me up and asked if I wanted this site to be involved in presenting the tour. It would be convenient narrative to tell you I had my Maha Sohona t-shirt on at the time, but no, I didn’t. I do, however, have it on today as the announcement comes through that the Umeå, Sweden, three-piece will head out on a run from Nov. 17-27 in support of both the aforementioned reissue and 2021’s second album, Endless Searcher (review here), which still gets spins around these parts, including right now. Do I feel like a nerd wearing the shirt of the band I’m listening to and writing about at this very moment? Yes, I do. Does it matter even in the teeniest, tiniest bit of the slightest? Nope. That’s what happens with me and good bands. I’ll be a nerd for this shit any day of the week, as long as the shirt’s been through the wash.

Curious what their plans for next year might be, in terms of perhaps receiving invites to the busy Spring heavy-festival season in Europe, but we’ve got time before we get there, so maybe we’ll find out and maybe we won’t. In the meantime, the reissue of the first record and the regular-ol’-issue of the second one are both streaming below, so have at it. I’m proud and thrilled to have an Obelisk logo on this poster, not the least for the artwork that accompanies. Damn, Maciej Kamuda.

And indeed, damn, one and all:

Mexicoma Premiere “Earth Mother”; Kalpa LP Coming July 1

Posted in audiObelisk, Whathaveyou on June 2nd, 2022 by JJ Koczan

mexicoma (Photo by Peter Lindgren)

Majestic Mountain Records announced late last week that it had picked up Umeå, Sweden, six-piece Mexicoma for a new album release. The record in question is Kalpa, out July 1 with preorders starting tomorrow, and though I’m left wondering if it’s the band’s second full-length for their third and which between 2014’s Obsidian Monolith (discussed here) and 2013’s prior self-titled (discussed here) was an album and which was an EP, maybe it doesn’t matter, because Kalpa definitely is, running eight tracks and 38 minutes that begin with the tale-telling hooks of “Heavy Hand” and “Zombie Barricade” that bring about a classic, Kyussy desert-style heavy rock vibe the Truckfigthers-ish chug of “Dead City Lights” soon affirms. Priorities make themselves known quickly, efficiently, and splitting hairs isn’t on the list.

Vocalist Aaron Andersson is a significant presence throughout, channeling a brooding Matt Hyde of Beastwars in the early going of “Through the Halls of Sleep” but elsewhere front and center of the mix, riding the high energy riffage the one-two-three guitars provide while still being able to chill on belting it out when called upon by the track in question. “0°” presents enough of a turn toward a prog-metal riffing style that I wonder if the title isn’t a reference to Tool‘s “4°” — though actually it sounds more like “46 and 2” — but it’s an immediate twist for the start of side B, and leaves “Earth Mother” (premiering below) to return to ground, which it does with extra vocal layers, an extra-huge riff and a more grandiose nod and a chorus that calls back to “Heavy Hand” before “99 Eyes” presents a more aggro take on ’90s crunch and “Follow the Crow” slows down and starts mellow in such a way that telegraphs the big finish to come.

It caps with a fervent, shout-topped groove that does well to summarize the record as a whole, which benefits as much from songwriting as from the electricity of its performances, the more uptempo material especially carried across with an energy that feels derived from and loyal to a live setting. As Kalpa is Mexicoma‘s first offering — long-player or not — since 2014, no doubt its burly vibe will the the first encounter many listeners have with the band. The rougher edges, moodier moments and periodically thrown elbows should have no trouble eliciting a knowing nod from more experienced heads, as the underlying communion with genre is still readily apparent and brought forth in a spirit of aesthetic celebration.

PR wire info follows the track below. Enjoy:

Mexicoma, “Earth Mother” track premiere

We bring you news from the wire of the next Majestic Mountain Records signing:
We are truly psyched to welcome Sweden’s Mexicoma to the MMR crew.

“Earth Mother” the first single of their upcoming album “Kalpa” brings the mega riffy dessert tones and MMR is stoked to bring you their first release since 2014. Mexicoma brings it hard!

Their upcoming album will be the first release since 2014 for the desert toned, riff based, heavy stoner rockers from Umea, with the full Majestic treatment of course. And get amped, because ‘Earth Mother,’ the first taste from their upcoming album ‘Kalpa’ will be premiering on Thursday, the 2nd of June. Keep an eye out!

“Mexicoma are stoked to announce that we are signing with Majestic Mountain Records! Boss man Marco is a true music lover and it shines through in the way he runs the label with attention to details and care for the bands. Having only been around a few years, Majestic has already put a dent in the heavy music underground and Mexicoma couldn’t find a better mountain to dwell on!”

Please join us in giving Mexicoma a warm welcome to the MMR crew, we’re proud to have them with us!

Maha Sohona Self-Titled Reissue Coming Next Year

Posted in Whathaveyou on November 16th, 2021 by JJ Koczan

I haven’t posted as much about it as I probably should — band needs to make a video or something — but I’ve been continually going back to Maha Sohona‘s 2021 album, Endless Searcher (review here), since first encountering it. The Swedish outfit’s first record since 2014 is now being answered with a reissue of its predecessor, which is good for me since it gives me an excuse to dig into that too. And I mean, it’s probably good for you too if you like stuff like heavy riffs and mellow vibes and big ol’ Ganeshas with tentacle trunks. So I guess that’s just about everybody, right? Thought so.

The vinyl is being handled through Made of Stone Recordings, and they sent the following down the PR wire. Note that the release date is June, in case you were wondering how that whole everybody’s-vinyl-is-delayed thing was going. But whatever. Maybe I’ll book a review for June 2022 and just keep it in my notes for the next seven months. Sometimes it’s nice to get a jump on something.

Stream both of Maha Sohona‘s records at the bottom of this post. That’s my advice:

Cavern Deep Post Frank Zappa & Captain Beefheart Cover “Muffin Man”

Posted in Whathaveyou on November 9th, 2021 by JJ Koczan

Legit move by Swedish trio Cavern Deep in following up their 2021 self-titled debut (review here) on Interstellar Smoke Records with something as offbeat and ‘other’ as a cover of Frank Zappa and Captain Beefheart. The album as you’ll recall was a deeply conceptual work, based around a coherent narrative structure that was expressed in music and lyrics alike. If the intent is to show listeners that that’s not what you’re going to do all the time coming off your first proper release, then yeah, this greatly broadens the trajectory of the band. The best way to let people know you’re going to do whatever the hell you want is to do that. So here we are.

The three-piece have another full-length in the can as they announced a bit ago, and they’ve done numerous videos to help spread word about the self-titled. I’m not sure if this cover means they’re done with that record entirely or not — seems early to be, despite the mileage they’ve gotten from it, in promo terms — but while they’ve changed the scope of the band here and demonstrated that they have more than just that one story to tell, they’ve remained consistent in their will to move forward and their abiding restlessness.

Cavern Deep‘s take on “Muffin Man” is out now and streaming. Audio and info follow, courtesy of the PR wire:

Cavern Deep Release Cover Of Frank Zappa’s “Muffin Man”

Doom Act Cavern Deep Release a cover of Frank Zappa’s legendary song “Muffin Man.”

Cavern Deep adds – “This is an homage to the great Frank Zappa and Captain Beefheart’s masterpiece “The Muffin Man”. We came up with the idea of doing this cover late at night whilst inspecting some beverages, and it still felt like a good idea the day after, so we recorded it. The tone is not as serious as in our S/T debut album, which is the point. We aim to show that Cavern Deep will aim to be more than just a cave dwelling doom act.”

Cavern Deep Premiere “Fungal Realm” Lyric Video

Posted in Bootleg Theater on September 24th, 2021 by JJ Koczan

cavern deep fungal realm home at last

Swedish trio Cavern Deep made their self-titled debut (review here) in July on Interstellar Smoke Records, and in so doing, chronicled the story of an archaeological dig gone horribly wrong. “Fungal Realm,” the penultimate of the included eight tracks, is the point in the narrative at which that seems to happen. It is here that the Umeå-based three-piece of guitarist/vocalist Kenny-Oswald Duvfenberg, bassist/vocalist Max Malmer and drummer/backup vocalist Dennis Sjödin (also keys) present the tragedy this exposition finds on its journey into the titular deep cavern. Not to give it all away or anything, but the song is called “Fungal Realm.”

Maybe this is off-topic — and maybe not — but anyone remember that episode of The X-Files where Mulder and Scully go out to investigate whatever it is, somebody disappeared or something, and they find out that the entire hillside is actually a giant, living fungus that tries to trap them and make them think they got away by making them hallucinate while it digests them? So much goo and ’90s special effects of faces melting. It ain’t the Smoking Man or “Is your hair chemically treated?,” but it was an awesome one-off episode just the same. Cavern Deep and “Fungal Realm” particularly kind of remind me of that, except, you know, epic, melodic, ambient doom instead of Gillian Anderson in shoulderpads. Can’t have everything.

To this point, Cavern Deep have done an admirable job reaching out to establish a following for their work. This lyric video series, which boasts a chapter for each song on the record, follows a series of live performance clips and another video series. In the meantime, they’ve also taken it on themselves to record and finish a second album, though when it’ll be out, I have no idea. Not before the end of 2021, in any case. Still, it tells you this is a band who not only believe in what they’re doing, but are looking to show that to other people as well. Seems like such a straightforward idea, and I suppose it’s true of everyone to some degree — myself included — but not everyone does to the same lengths, and as ever, I respect the hustle.

Under the lyric video and accompanying info, I’ve also included the live-in-studio clip of “Fungal Realm” and the Bandcamp album stream. Happy excavating.

Enjoy:

Cavern Deep, “Fungal Realm” lyric video premiere

Cavern Deep releases the 7th lyric video in the process of releasing an entire long concept video for their debut self-titled album.

Fungal Realm is the 7th song on the Cavern Deep concept album released on Interstellar Smoke Records worldwide on vinyl and digital distribution the 23rd of July 2021.

The songs synopsis is as follows:

“I am alone.. Traitors! They could not endure.. Out of sight.. Engulfed.. I am abandoned.. The spores burn..
Burn my lungs. The pulsating mass is limitless.. layers of layers..
The triangular gate.. The bridge.. I can see it.. I must reach it! Before this horrid,
rotting organism takes hold of my mind completely.. ”

Cavern Deep Finish Recording Second Album

Posted in Whathaveyou on August 19th, 2021 by JJ Koczan

Respect to Umeå, Sweden’s Cavern Deep, who it would seem aren’t wasting any time whatsoever. Less than a month out from releasing their self-titled debut (review here) on Interstellar Smoke, and just two weeks from launching a series of lyric videos for its narratively-constructed tracks, the trio have nonetheless announced their follow-up long-player is recorded. Doom that works at a space rock pace? Sure, that works for me.

Bassist/vocalist Max Malmer posted about this in The Obelisk group on Facebook and noted that it would be a while before it was released — they’re apparently making a video game of some sort to go with; before you ask, yes, I advocated for a classic SNES Final Fantasy-style turn-based battle system; “You spoony bard!” for life — but if the songs are already in the can, how long will it be before they start on a third full-length? They’ve already shown themselves to be the restless type as a unit. Will they have a backlog of material waiting to be released by the end of this year?

And have I ever told you I used to daydream about writing ridiculous RPG plots? Also children’s books. Also Star Trek fanfic. Also poetry. Also pretty much anything. Alas, time.

I digress. To the PR wire:

Doom Metal Act Cavern Deep Are Back In The Studio!

Doom act Cavern Deep has just finished recording their second album. It continues the tale of the archeologist of the first album with 6 crushing new songs. All engineering, mixing and mastering is done DIY, same as the first album. More news to come very soon!

Cavern Deep is a slow, heavy band, founded 2019, by members from Zonaria and Swedish retro riffsters Gudars Skymning.

The debut self-titled album is about one archeologist and his crew of ambitious henchmen and their descent into the cavernous realm below the crust of the earth. Learn about their fate and listen to some heavy, gloomy riffs along their slow path downwards.

Cavern Deep Launch Video Series for Self-Titled Debut Concept Album

Posted in Whathaveyou on August 3rd, 2021 by JJ Koczan

Respect to Swedish newcomer trio Cavern Deep. Right out of the gate with their Interstellar Smoke Records self-titled debut (review here), the band have shown multi-tiered ambitiousness. They not only crafted, refined and recorded a complete concept album as their first record, following a narrative across eight songs — which would probably be enough for a lot of acts — but they then went and recorded videos of themselves playing the entire thing live, and now, to emphasize the storyline, they’ve begun a new eight-part series that will take their audience through the entire downward-arc the full-length follows through the lyrics and the additional storyline they’ve written out.

It’s another way to listen, and it demonstrates plainly that Cavern Deep are looking to engage an audience even in a time (largely) without touring, and in a way that works geographically broader than touring probably would while simultaneously adding depth to the Cavern Deep LP itself. And they DIY it.

This is a band clearly passionate about their work doing everything they can to stand by it. Fucking. A. Doesn’t hurt either that the album kicks ass.

Info from the PR wire:

Cavern Deep Announce eight Chapter Video Series And Release “Staring Down” Chapter 1!

Doom Act Cavern Deep Announce eight Chapter Video Series And Release “Staring Down”, the first chapter in the series.

Cavern Deep adds: Today we’re officially announcing our 8 chapter long video series. Every video is a chapter from our recently released concept album such that you can follow the archeologist on his journey down into the depths below.

Video, mix and master was made by Max Malmer at Malmer Productions.

Cavern Deep – “Staring Down”
The start of the expedition.

One archaeologist and 49 men stand at the gates of a previously unknown civilization, for a moment staring down into the bowels of the mountain before they begin their descent. The journey downwards turn out to be more dangerous than expected, they climb down through whirling stairs lit only by organic fluorescent lights.

Further down the path turns more and more crumbled, eventually they must use ropes to traverse the broken bridges and tunnels over the deep chasms below. Filled by the promise of treasure they continue downwards. Many men go missing as they’re tasked to explore diverting tunnels, they never return and their screams are followed by silence. the only thing found is their safety ropes, driven by greed the archaeologist continues the expedition.
