Terminal Cheesecake Reissue Cheese Brain Fondue: Live in Marseille

Posted in Whathaveyou on October 30th, 2017 by JJ Koczan

Originally released by Artificial Head Recordsin 2015, the live album Cheese Brain Fondue by London heavy psych rockers Terminal Cheesecake has been newly reissued digitally by French imprint Atypeek Music. The offering was recorded late in 2014 as part of the resurgent outfit’s reunion onslaught that remains ongoing and in recent years has found them at Desertfest, Yellowstock and elsewhere throughout the UK and Europe, still underrated but gaining all the more of a reputation for that. Their most recent studio offering, Dandelion Sauce of the Ancients (discussed here), came out last November via Box Records and was their first long-player in 22 years, which, you know, seems like probably long enough.

The PR wire has info on the live record, which is also streaming, and more besides:

TERMINAL CHEESECAKE – Cheese Brain Fondue (Live in Marseille) – Digital, 2xLP

Atypeek Music/ Artificial Head Records

Out now (10/2017)

2013 saw the triumphant return of London’s Terminal Cheesecake. The band formed in London in 1988 and stumbled through two EPs, five LPs and an unreleased Peel session before they called it a day in 1994.

Terminal Cheesecake are back as a tightly knitted tea cosy of a unit, after a not-so-short break deeply contemplating space and time in the further reaches of the eastern outposts of the capital and beyond. The time is right for the return to the stages of this wonderful planet and for a fresh assault on the senses of the willing public.

Cheese Brain Fondue: Live In Marseille was recorded live – in Marseille – at L’Embobineuse in October 2015. The whole thing is a massive, multi-coloured, fuzzy triumph. For one thing, it captures the band as a truly immense sonic force to be reckoned with. The whole thing sounds dynamic and vast with the murmured rumblings at the start of opening improv Fake Loop working their way effortlessly to a giant screaming climax and the opening drum smashes and six-string abuse of Bladdersack.

Cheese Brain Fondue: Live In Marseille really deserves to rank alongside the lofty likes of Hawkwind’s Space Ritual as one of the all time great live psychedelic rock recordings. It overflows with heavy energy and cosmic laughter. Throughout hard rocking wig outs, wave after wave of fuzz seeps from amps, and laps the stage like the Mediterranean on France’s southern shores. Terminal Cheesecake are back, and quite possibly better than ever before.

Terminal Cheesecake:
Gordon Watson – guitar
Russell Smith – guitar
John Jobaggy – drums, samples
Neil Francis – vocals, effects
Dave Cochrane – bass

Desertfest London 2017: Individual Day Schedules Announced

Posted in Whathaveyou on January 30th, 2017 by JJ Koczan

I have no problem admitting to feeling overwhelmed looking at the full lineup and individual day splits for Desertfest London 2017. I mean, seriously. Look at that poster. What a way to spend a weekend.

Likewise, I have few grand reflections to offer in light of that overwhelming feeling, except perhaps to take a step back and be massively impressed at how much this event has grown in just six incarnations. Along with Desertfest Berlin, the London edition has become an anchor not only for the UK heavy rock underground — which is well represented here as ever in Elephant TreeBlack SpidersStubbVodunPigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs PigsTerminal CheesecakeChubby Thunderous Bad Kush MastersMammoth Weed Wizard Bastard, and so on — but for bands from abroad as well. You’ll note the three headliners: two American, one Norwegian, and the next line down on the poster is two Swedish, one American. Desertfest London 2017’s reach feels wider than ever. Staring at the final lineup, it’s clear just how much of a big fucking deal this festival has become.

Wish I could be there to see it.

Here’s the announcement of the individual day lineups from their website:

desertfest london 2017

DESERTFEST 2017 DAY SPLITS AND DAY TICKETS ARE HERE!

Finally, the Desertfest 2017 day and stage splits are here, along with individual day tickets. It’s the point of the year where you can start planning the weekend, you can imagine the sets in your head and you can curse those god damned clashes.

Last things first, let’s get straight to that insane Sunday main-stage. To celebrate The Roundhouse joining the Desertfest family, we made their debut appearance something special. Not only will stoner doom icons Sleep be topping the bill, but the Roundhouse hosts a full bill of huge acts. Candlemass, with over three decades of underground acclaim to their name, bring the epic doom metal. USA’s Wolves in the Throne Room bring the atmospheric black metal. Traditional doom metal stalwarts Saint Vitus bring the classic riffs. And how about this for a ‘curtain jerker’? Bongzilla bring the raw weed metal for their second show of the weekend; more on the first later.

It’s not just about the Sunday though. Friday’s stage at the Electric Ballroom is headlined by returning heroes Slo Burn whose short run in the mid 90s furthered the then fledgling stoner rock scene. One band they surely had an impact on is Lowrider, who play Europe’s finest stoner rock alongside them. Ukraine’s Stoned Jesus celebrate their resonant album Seven Thunders Roar, and 1000Mods and Pontiak round up the main stage on the Friday.

The Electric Ballroom on Saturday will be swarming with Turbojugends as death-punk grandmasters Turbonegro turn Camden into party central. John Garcia sticks around for a solo show, sure to feature classics from his years of nonstop mastery in the stoner rock scene. Sheffield’s rock and roll five piece Black Spiders visit London for one last time on their farewell tour, with Satan’s Satyrs and Avon rounding up the main stage.

As ever though, it doesn’t stop at the main stages. Our regular partners have delivered three stages with diverse lineups. Human_Disease_Promo and When Planets Collide take over The Underworld on Saturday in a bill headlined by Bongzilla with a special set celebrating the band’s early work. The Quietus stage is led by synth wavers Zombi, and Nightshift Promotions bring an eclectic mix led by Hungary’s Apey & the Pea. To be honest, just stick a pin in the lineup poster and you’re guaranteed a good time.

For those who can’t make the full weekend, we have a limited number of individual day tickets. Priced at £40 for Friday tickets, £40 for Saturday tickets and £45 for Sunday tickets, links are below.

So there we have it. Our final lineup for Desertfest 2017. We hope you’re as excited as we are to get back to Camden this April and riff London to the ground.

Terminal Cheesecake to Release Dandelion Sauce of the Ancients Nov. 11

Posted in Whathaveyou on September 23rd, 2016 by JJ Koczan

terminal-cheesecake

Revitalized psychotronic wizards Terminal Cheesecake have announced that their first studio album in 22 years, Dandelion Sauce of the Ancients, will be released on Nov. 11 via Box Records. The band has been kicking around live shows for a while now — they played Yellowstock in Belgium this August, for example — and last year they released the Cheese Brain Fondue live outing on Artificial Head, but their last actual full-length was 1994’s King of all Spaceheads, so yeah, it’s been a minute.

To advance the coming of Dandelion Sauce of the Ancients, Terminal Cheesecake are streaming the new track “Song for John Pt. 1” that you can check out below, along with the cover art, tracklisting, lineup info and other sundry thisses and thats that tend to provide useful when one is, say, reviewing an album later and wants to look back and see where it was recorded. Ha.

Last year the band celebrated their reincarnation with the release of an outstanding and deservedly praised live album ‘Cheese Brain Fondue’ released on US based label Artificial Head.

Yellowstock X: Lineup Complete; Kadavar to Headline

Posted in Whathaveyou on July 6th, 2016 by JJ Koczan

Set for Aug. 13 and 14 in Geel, Belgium, Yellowstock X is sort of where the summer festival season meets the fall festival season in Europe, thus reinforcing the notion that there is at this point no such thing as a festival season at all, and awesome shows are just a year-round occurrence. Either way, the lineup for the 10th edition of the fest is a striking international assemblage, from Kadavar confirmed to headline to the psych jams of Hills, The Midnight Ghost Train‘s bluster-blues, Zone Six‘s space rock triumphs, Greenleaf‘s hard-driving choruses and on and on.

With bands from Russia to the US, as well as Belgian acts like Flying Horseman, the why-would-you-call-your-band-this Kiss the Anus of a Black Cat, Tangled Horns and The Glücks, it looks like a well-curated mix of groups and should make for a great precursor to the busy autumn ahead.

Complete lineup and headliner announcement follow, courtesy of the fest:

Yellowstock Festival: First Bands Confirmed; Early-Bird Tickets Sold Out

Posted in Whathaveyou on March 8th, 2016 by JJ Koczan

This year’s Yellowstock festival is set for Aug. 13-14 at Bogaard in Geel, Belgium. 2016 marks the 10th anniversary of the fest, which has in years past featured lineups gathering a particular slice of European and American heavy psychedelia, and it looks like this incarnation of the fest is no different. It’s up from one day in 2015 to two now, so I’d expect more than a few lineup additions are still to come, but they’re off and running with the likes of Michael RotherGreenleafHillsThe Flying EyesThe Midnight Ghost TrainThe MachineThe Grand Astoria and so on in their initial announcement.

Enough so that upon being made available this past weekend, early-bird tickets sold out quickly. There’s still time before August gets here if you happen to be near Geel or otherwise ready to travel, but it’s one to keep an eye on. The first Yellowstock was in 2007, and since then the fest has continued to flourish and build its own community in an increasingly crowded heavy scene.

I’ll do my best to keep up with announcements as they come out, but here’s the initial word from the fest itself, as seen on the social medias:
