Supermoon Post Video for New Single “Inner Sun”

supermoon

I don’t know if they’re doing a record or something, but the new Supermoon song is a jam, and watch out for the righteous return late. “Inner Sun” starts out kind of sneaking its way toward the verse before you even really understand the movement that’s taking place, and it keeps that steady, languid procession as it comes to full tonality at around a minute in before receding back to the next verse. The tempo kick comes after the second sans-vocal chorus, a memorable declining figure of guitar matching step with the ride cymbal in heavy psychedelic blossom.

They hold that groove tight, through the tempo shift and everything, and as alluded, there’s time for a slowdown in the second half. The song is intentionally atmospheric, moody without melodrama, so it’s fitting that the video should focus on ambience as well. You’ll find the clip on the player below — don’t have to look too far — and I promise that if I at any point hear about Supermoon getting a full-length together to follow their 2021 self-titled, I’ll keep you in the loop to the best of my admittedly limited capacity.

For now, this. Video info follows, courtesy of the band.

Please enjoy:

Supermoon, “Inner Sun” official video

Supermoon return with a new track and video. Inspired by indigenous medicinal songs, “Inner Sun” is wandering in the forest, across the sea and through the dark, in search of light.

Supermoon are a psychedelic/stoner rock band from Athens, Greece, formed in 2019 by Vasilis Tsigkris. Starting as a solo project, in late 2020 they released their debut album (Made Of Stone Recordings, Southcave Records). They are now a power trio, performing live throughout Greece, opening for Naxatras, playing in the first Mammoth Fest, IMF Festival and more.

Combining heavy psychedelic atmosphere with spiritual lyrics and folkloric musical elements, Supermoon manage to succeed effortless crossovers in music genres, creating a brand new yet intimate musical universe, which stands on the brink of darkness, bathed in light.

The Obelisk Show on Gimme Metal Playlist: Episode 97

Posted in Radio on November 11th, 2022 by JJ Koczan

the obelisk show banner

Doing an all-Greek episode was so blindingly obvious that I actually had to check to make sure I hadn’t already done one somewhere in the last four years or so that I’ve been doing The Obelisk Show for Gimme Metal. Like, duh. And the playlist? One of the easiest times I’ve ever had putting one together. So many bands, so many vibes, so much to choose from.

Lotus Emperor’s new record, which was reviewed yesterday, was the impetus for the entire thing, so it seemed only fair to start with that, but I wanted to make sure to include a fair bit of landmark acts — 1000mods, Villagers of Ioannina City, Planet of Zeus, Naxatras, Nightstalker, Puta Volcano — alongside up and comers like Bus, Supermoon, Lotus Emperor, Acid Mammoth, Honeybadger, Half Gramme of Soma, and so on, in order to give some sense of the scope of the Greek underground, which for my money is one of the strongest in the world and an ecosystem of bands and fans unlike any other happening right now in Europe (if you want to expand to the rest of the world, Australia would rival).

Before I turn you over to the playlist, I’ll give the inevitable disclaimer that this represents but a fraction of Greece’s vibrant heavy creative community, and that there’s basically a planet’s worth of bands in Athens alone, never mind anywhere else in the country. I say in one or another of the breaks that I consider Greece at least as strong a scene as Sweden and Germany in terms of everything but broader recognition, and I stand by that. If you hear this show and want to dig further into any of these acts or find others, that’s the ideal.

Thanks if you listen and thanks for reading.

The Obelisk Show airs 5PM Eastern today on the Gimme app or at: http://gimmemetal.com.

The Obelisk Questionnaire: Vasilis Tsigkris of Supermoon

Posted in Questionnaire on January 13th, 2022 by JJ Koczan

The Obelisk Questionnaire is a series of open questions intended to give the answerer an opportunity to explore these ideas and stories from their life as deeply as they choose. Answers can be short or long, and that reveals something in itself, but the most important factor is honesty.

Based on the Proust Questionnaire, the goal over time is to show a diverse range of perspectives as those who take part bring their own points of view to answering the same questions. To see all The Obelisk Questionnaire posts, click here.

Thank you for reading and thanks to all who participate.

The Obelisk Questionnaire: Vasilis Tsigkris of Supermoon

How do you define what you do and how did you come to do it?

I compose music, sing and play the bass for Supermoon. I like to describe our sound as Forest Rock, which is a mix of psy, stoner/doom and folk. I’ve been playing with bands since junior high-school and it’s the best thing I’ve done. I couldn’t imagine my life without playing music, it’s like an urge from within.

Describe your first musical memory.

Some time when I was really young, we went for a visit at my grandparents’ house in central Athens. It was there, inside a bedroom, that i saw an electric guitar for the very first time. It was my uncle’s guitar: an old golden semi-hollow Gibson or Epiphone — I can’t recall. I was enchanted by its looks and the sound the strings made, and i thought this must have been a magical object and it was me who has discovered it!

Describe your best musical memory to date.

When i first visited Ozora Festival in Hungary, five years ago. It’s by far the best festival experience I’ve had. I had no idea that a festival could even be like that. I can’t really explain it, those who have been there know what I’m talking about.

When was a time when a firmly held belief was tested?

With the loss of a loved one in a really early age, at a time when I thought grown-ups are so strong — almost immortals.

Where do you feel artistic progression leads?

I believe artistic progression derives from maturation of the individual. Being able to incorporate this maturation into your art, could lead to more authentic creations.

How do you define success?

As the connection created between you and the people who embrace your music. When your songs are played in a home far from your home, when your lyrics are sang in a gig, by people you don’t know.

What is something you have seen that you wish you hadn’t?

Human tactics in general. From being disrespectful towards one another, to polluting the seas and forests, abusing power, animals, creating monstrous cities.. This list is endless.

Describe something you haven’t created yet that you’d like to create.

I’d like to write a book, a fantasy novel maybe. I like to write a lot and I find it fascinating, that one can create a whole new universe from blank pages and give birth to brand new settings and images. I try to do it from time to time, but I find it really difficult to be honest. Well maybe someday, who knows.

What do you believe is the most essential function of art?

Art to the people; Sharing!

Something non-musical that you’re looking forward to?

We are planning a trip to Italy, my girlfriend and I. Really looking forward to it, especially after all this time in a covid cell.

Supermoon to Release Self-Titled LP in June

Posted in Whathaveyou on March 9th, 2021 by JJ Koczan

Warm vibe, melody, space — there’s very little for heavy psych heads not to dig in Supermoon‘s Supermoon, the 2020-released debut album from the Athens-based unit. They call it “forest rock.” Like many in the broad pantheon of Greek heavy, they find an avenue through which to work Mediterranean folk aspects into their sound, and in a perfect world, they’d be on a package tour already through Sound of Liberation with some awesome poster and a title based on ancient literature — in an even more perfect world than that, I’d present said tour — but on Planet Here, they’ll release Supermoon through Made of Stone Recordings on vinyl, and all things considered, that’s nothing to hack up a lung at.

If you missed Supermoon the first time around, as I did, first of all you get a pass in the ‘2020 Required You to Be Looking at Other Things’ accord, you’ll find it streaming in its entirety at the bottom of this post and it’s worth digging into. If my say-so isn’t enough for you to take it on, well, okay, that’s alright. I was recently accused of “erring on the side of hype,” which I’m not sure I’m ashamed of. The possibility that hearing something new might enrich someone else’s day as well as my own is a big part of why I’m typing right now.

If that’s not you this time, maybe next time. If it is, all the better. When it comes to it though, what do you really have to lose?
