Southwest Terror Fest V Posts Video Trailer and Updates Lineup

Posted in Whathaveyou on September 14th, 2016 by JJ Koczan

A PR wire update from Southwest Terror Fest V is most certainly welcome, but really the poster says it all. The fest is set for Oct. 20-23, and I’ll just assume that five years on from the first incarnation, the chamber of commerce for the city of Tucson, Arizona, has a plan in place to handle the influx of weirdos for the weekend. Perhaps involving taco trucks? I don’t know. They’re the professionals, they can deal with it.

Point is, look at that list of names. There are so many, and the shows are spread over different venues so that even to hand out the crucial info barely leaves room for art on the poster. The lineup has been updated somewhat since the last time I posted about it — Nails dropped off because apparently they’re not a band anymore or whatever; see you at the reunion, or not — and there’s a new video trailer to go with the proceedings as well. Not everything on the bill is a fit with this site really, but screw it, if including Agoraphobic Nosebleed in a post is wrong, I don’t wanna be right.

Dig it:

Southwest Terror Fest V Completes Lineup

Posted in Whathaveyou on April 20th, 2016 by JJ Koczan

So, uh, the PR wire says that the lineup for Southwest Terror Fest V is complete, but to look at the rather complex timetable of acts playing over the course of Oct. 20 through 23, and I can’t help but notice one headlining time slot is filled with question marks. That’s the “mystery headliner.” I don’t know about you, but I’m damn curious who might mystery-headline a fest that runs a gamut from Agoraphobic Nosebleed to Saint Vitus to Theologian. Could pretty much be anybody. Not everything here is exactly my cup of tea — golly I could use a cup of tea — but truth is I admire the hell out of the work David Rogers of Godhunter does in putting this thing together and promoting it, and wanted to post for that reason as well.

Details from the PR wire:

Neurosis to Headline Southwest Terror Fest III in Arizona; Australian Dates Announced

Posted in Whathaveyou on May 20th, 2014 by JJ Koczan

Oh, I certainly would like to see Neurosis again. And I’d certainly like to see them play with SunnO))) and Goatsnake and Pelican and -(16)- in Tucson at the third Southwest Terror Fest this October. While I contemplate which of my limbs to donate to science and/or the illegal black market in order to make that happen, check out the rather considerable list of tour dates Neurosis have coming up. It’s been more than a minute since one could really think of them as a touring band, but they seem to be working their way back up to it.

I think when they put out The Eye of Every Storm they played, what, five shows? Now here they are going to Australia for the first time in their career, which hits its 30th year in 2015. Pretty astounding.

The PR wire puts it like this:

NEUROSIS Confirms Stateside Performances Including Southwest Terror Fest; First Australian Tour Booked

Directly following their recent declaration of an impending European Summer tour, which includes several major festival appearances and performances in territories where they’ve never before played, NEUROSIS now announces new stateside shows as well as their first tour of Australia.

Continuing their most intense bout of touring in more than two decades, still steadily supporting their heralded 2012-released, Honor Found In Decay, NEUROSIS will return to European soil this Summer. From June 28th through July 3rd, the Euro routing includes performances at both the massive annual Graspop Metal Meeting in Bessel, Belgium, as well as the Tuska Open Air Metal Festival in Helsinki, Finland, after which they’ll plow through Germany, Croatia and Greece.

Exactly one month after returning from Europe, NEUROSIS will finally make their way across the southern Pacific, bound for Australia on their first ever tour of the continent. The six-city Australian inundation will see the pack ripping through Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth, Melbourne and Sydney between July 4th and 9th, with two shows scheduled in Sydney.

NEUROSIS has also been confirmed as one of the key headliners at Arizona’s Southwest Terror Fest III: The Western Front. The third installment of this ever-expanding, now four-day event, will consume Tucson October 16th through 19th, with main acts Goatsnake and Sunn O))) in addition to NEUROSIS, who will headline Saturday, October 18th with support from The Body, Author & Punisher and Sorxe. In conjunction with their SWTF trip, the band will invade Denver on Sunday, October 19th with support from Subrosa and In The Company Of Serpents before dispersing and returning to their respective homes.

NEUROSIS Tour Dates:
6/28/2014 Graspop Festival – Bessel, Belgium
6/29/2014 Tuska Open Air Metal Festival – Helsinki, Finland
6/30/2014 Schlachthof – Wiesbaden, Germany
7/01/2014 Jedinstvo-Pogon – Zagreb, Croatia
7/02/2014 Astra – Berlin, Germany
7/03/2014 Fuzz Live Music Club – Athens, Greece
8/04/2014 The Hi Fi – Brisbane, Australia w/ Hope Drone
8/05/2014 HQ – Adelaide, Australia w/ Space Bong

Southwest Terror Fest Starts Tonight

Posted in Whathaveyou on October 10th, 2013 by JJ Koczan

If you’re gonna book your flight to get to Tucson for the Southwest Terror Fest, you might want to get on it. There are only a few hours left till the four-dayer kicks off and time’s a wastin’! There’s a good chance this’ll be the only all-ages show some of these bands play this year,  so for the kids, all the better, but even for an aged cave ogre such as myself, an assemblage that culls toghether Kylesa, Ancestors (one day I will bring them East for a show and it will be glorious; mark my words), SubRosa and Red Fang is worthy of note. In just their second year out, the Southwest Terror Fest crew have not only outdone what they were able to make happen last year, but set the bar pretty high for 2014. Would be nice to make the trip to the desert one of these days…

Until then, I live vicariously through the PR wire:

Southwest Terror Fest Co-Organizer Comments on 2013 Lineup

Posted in Whathaveyou on September 5th, 2013 by JJ Koczan

This year’s Southwest Terror Fest is set to take place Oct. 10-13 at The Rock in Tucson, Arizona. The lineup — 65 band’s strong — is a huge jump from last year’s already-impressive inaugural edition, and with the likes of Kylesa, Red Fang, Sacred Reich and Early Graves booked to headline, they’re quickly moving into another echelon of event. Four full days and packed, thematic bills, the Year of the Snake is going to be a landmark one for the still nascent but clearly ascendent fest.

Godhunter guitarist/vocalist David Rodgers — whose band also has a debut full-length called City of Dust in the works for an early 2014 release — is among the organizers putting Southwest Terror Fest together and he was kind enough to give his take on the 2013 lineup. Find that and the full press release below:

David Rodgers, Southwest Terror Fest Co-Organizer:

After the death of the Los Angeles Murder Fest a few years ago, we noticed there was a pretty big void for festivals in the Southwest, so myself, Dave Carroll from Diseased Reason, Larry Horvath from Great American Tragedy and Ryan Avery from Pigeonwing decided it was time for someone to step up make a festival-type event happen. There are just too many good bands in the Southwest to be ignored, in our opinion. We worked pretty hard this year to expand upon last year’s successful inaugural run. Terror Fest has been expanded to a full four days this year, along with the number of bands ballooning to 65 in total.

We have bands from 11 states across the US and our first international band this year with Sierra coming from Canada. As such, we have a much more diverse lineup this year. We were able to focus each night to match bands with the headliners. For instance, on Thursday we have Kylesa headlining and we have a nice variety of sludge and psych bands to go with them. On Friday, we built the day around Sacred Reich, so it features the heavier genres like death and thrash and black metal. Saturday brings us Red Fang with a lineup stocked with stoner rock and doom bands. We wrap the thing up on Sunday with a punk/crust day centered around Early Graves. I know it may sound a bit trite, but we really did try to be as diverse as possible this year. We feel that if you listen to heavy music, one or more of these days should appeal to you.

SOUTHWEST TERROR FEST 2013: Year Of The Snake; Killer Lineup For 2nd Annual Tucson-Based Fest Announced

Following its crushingly triumphant debut maiden occurrence last year, the second Tucson, Arizona-based SOUTHWEST TERROR FEST 2013: Year Of The Snake has been confirmed and the full lineup for the massive gala announced!

This fully DIY undertaking, booked by musicians, for musicians, is a low-cost event for all ages. Once again organized and hosted by Tucson sludgetroopers GODHUNTER, the now annual SOUTHWEST TERROR FEST brings a one-of-a-kind extreme underground music festival to the Southwestern quadrant of America. This year, the experience has been expanded into an immense four-day event, now confirmed to invade Tucson venue The Rock from Thursday, October, 10th through Sunday, October 13th. The SOUTHWEST TERROR FEST 2013: Year Of The Snake lineup features even more national headlining acts than last year, including legends like Sacred Reich and Vehemence, along with Kylesa, Red Fang, Demon Lung, Ancestors, Subrosa, Landmine Marathon, Early Graves and others, and a long line of newer underground acts, totaling more than sixty bands! Whether you like punk, sludge, black metal, thrash, grindcore, post-metal, etc., something for all fans of extreme music is to be found at this event.

SOUTHWEST TERROR FEST 2013: Year Of The Snake is sponsored by Earsplit PR, Moon Smoke Shops, Lace Pickups, Cvlt Nation, Zombie Effects Lab, Ear/Splitters, Axe Of Contrition, Acid Reflux Records, Violent Resonance.com, Lindy’s on 4th, Black Rose Tattoo and Sticks N’ Strings Music Center

-16-, Hull, Godhunter, North, Toad, Sons of Tonatiuh and Many More Confirmed for the Southwest Terror Fest

It’s a considerable lineup, and by that I mean it has me considering plane tickets.
