The Obelisk Questionnaire: Pierre from Atolah

Posted in Questionnaire on June 10th, 2022 by JJ Koczan

Pierre of Atolah

The Obelisk Questionnaire is a series of open questions intended to give the answerer an opportunity to explore these ideas and stories from their life as deeply as they choose. Answers can be short or long, and that reveals something in itself, but the most important factor is honesty.

Based on the Proust Questionnaire, the goal over time is to show a diverse range of perspectives as those who take part bring their own points of view to answering the same questions. To see all The Obelisk Questionnaire posts, click here.

Thank you for reading and thanks to all who participate.

The Obelisk Questionnaire: Pierre from Atolah

How do you define what you do and how did you come to do it?

I define what I do as acting as the cement between various elements, whether it is between my band mates, my family or my colleagues. When talking specifically about Atolah, I like to see myself as a project manager. The interpretation and execution of ideas is definitely a collective endeavour.

Describe your first musical memory.

My first musical memory would be listening to Bleach – an album by a new smallish band called Nirvana – in the back seat of Ford Ecoline Cargo Van while driving through Northern Virginia in 1990.

Describe your best musical memory to date.

My best musical memory to date would either be my first gig (Immortal/Angel Corpse in the mid-90s) or catching Electric Wizard and Cathedral on the same bill. Both events were simply memorable.

When was a time when a firmly held belief was tested?

I had always thought that we would leave a safe place behind us…I am not so sure anymore. Time will tell.

Where do you feel artistic progression leads?

Artistic progression means getting out of your comfort zone while still enjoying what you do. Progression to me does not necessarily lead to progression in the execution or evolution of your art solely but also to the evolution of the vision you have of yourself as an « artist » where you fit in the big picture, what you want to do and why you are doing it.

How do you define success?

Success from a musical point of view is having a post-gig chat with a punter, who genuinely enjoyed your show. Having an impact on one person is something extraordinary and something very humbling. Even better if the entire crowd enjoyed what you have just done.

What is something you have seen that you wish you hadn’t?

I am pretty curious by nature so I don’t think that there is anything I have seen I wish I would not. Even the most gruesome things I can think of. I am just glad I have kept my eyes open for all of it so far.

Describe something you haven’t created yet that you’d like to create.

I don’t think I will ever create anything revolutionising… I will leave that to other people who unlike me, have the potential to do so.

What do you believe is the most essential function of art?

Art enables us to shape what is real but might be unattainable. It gives our intuition the ability to access what is real in the Human mind and expand it.

Something non-musical that you’re looking forward to?

I look forward to going back home to France for a bit after six years away.

The Bottle Doom Lazy Band Set March 19 Release for 2005-2020 Doom Over the Years

Posted in Whathaveyou on February 15th, 2021 by JJ Koczan

Take a listen to 2020’s Burn EP below and you’ll probably notice that French boozers The Bottle Doom Lazy Band aren’t exactly hurting for a raw sound to start with, but a live album is bound to live up to that, especially as it spans 15 years. 2005-2020 Doom Over the Years is the name of the offering, and it’s due out March 19 on Sleeping Church Records. There are a glut of live albums right now since band can’t tour, but a 15th anniversary is nothing to sneeze at, so they’re well within their rights to celebrate in one of the few ways they could.

No audio yet from 2005-2020 Doom Over the Years, just about a month out from the release, but you can still get a sense of where they’re coming from with the EP, so if you’re ready to blow off the rest of your day and kick back with a little aptly-designated ‘bottle doom,’ I say have at it.

From the PR wire:

THE BOTTLE DOOM LAZY BAND Releases Live Album “2005 – 2020 Doom Over The Years”!

Due out on March 19th through Sleeping Church Records!

French doom collective, THE BOTTLE DOOM LAZY BAND, has announced their first live album, which will be released on March 19th, 2021, through Sleeping Church Records!

With their loud ‘n low-tuned, epic yet fierce and slow doom sound, the band burst into the heavy music scene in 2005. Following 3 records and 15 years of countless shows and tours later, and especially in these current dark times of empty venues, THE BOTTLE DOOM LAZY BAND would like to share their memories with this very special collection of gig excerpts to be released as a live album titled “2005 – 2020 Doom Over The Years”. Recorded at several shows over the past 15 years featuring 10 blistering live tracks, the album was ultimately mixed & mastered by Guyome at Cripple Room.

Says the band: “This live effort simply represents the story of a bunch of mates, 15 years of gigging (well, just every now and then, not all the time. Let’s be serious, we’ve got other stuff to do). Gigging, with its fair share of stinky sweat, booze and puke spatter, encounters of all kind of thirsty people and nut jobs from all kind of places.”

Tracklist:
1. Blood For The Bloodking
2. The Dead Can’t Lose Again
3. Ridin’ Bones
4. Night Of The Living Dead
5. The Beast Must Die
6. Smiling Tomb
7. Space Crusader
8. Lost n’ Drunk
9. Too Old
10. Into The Necronef (Unplugged)

Line-up 2020:
Bottleben – Vocals

Doomed or be Doomed: A French Tribute to Cathedral Due Aug. 13

Posted in Whathaveyou on July 17th, 2019 by JJ Koczan

Just the other day I was thinking about how underrated Cathedral are. Really, that’s the kind of thing I think about. Not only were they groundbreaking in terms of setting the tone for what doom metal became in the ’80s and ’90s, but they had that whole rock period too, and yeah, there were some ups and downs along the way, but they never compromised at all on doing what they wanted to at any given moment, and right up to the end, they delivered quality doom. The idea of a French tribute to a quintessentially English band is a cool bit of cultural nuance, but the point here is Cathedral deserve to be talked about in league with the heavyweights of their generation, and I know Lee Dorrian‘s work with Rise Above sometimes seems to pull focus away from that, but there’s an awful lot he did first musically that’s worth discussing.

Kudos to Sleeping Church Records for putting this one together. Take a few minutes and stream the Ataraxie cover of “Reaching Happiness, Touching Pain” at the bottom of the post. I don’t think you’ll regret it.

Doom on:

doomed or be doomed a french tribute to cathedral

Doomed Or Be Doomed : A French Tribute To CATHEDRAL to be released on August 13th via Sleeping Church Records!

Pre-orders: Shop – https://sleepingchurchrds.com or Bandcamp – https://sleepingchurchrecords.bandcamp.com/

If you have not known CATHEDRAL at Forest Of Equilibrium, you may not be able to understand the huge impact this album has had on the Hard Rock scene of the day. Certainly, we knew a little Doom Metal thanks to CANDLEMASS … But that was something else. Heavier, slower, more morbid. In a time when it was the race to speed that prevailed, this disc took everyone back on the road. And the band did not stop there: for each album, CATHEDRAL evolved, jostled new barriers, and established new rules of the game, both musical and pictorial thanks to the tormented and psychedelic covers of Dave Patchett. So, from a simple idea launched on the internet, then relayed by social networks, patiently, slowly, this double-album was built to bring together what the French Doom has produced better and pay homage to the most influential bands of English Doom Metal. Each of them has entered the world of CATHEDRAL to re-interpret, sometimes re-invent. Do you dare to follow them on this journey?
– Laurent Lignon –

Two-headed project, this tribute album was imagined and possible thanks to the passion of Laurent Lignon and Stéphane Le Saux who know very well the French Doom scene. Thank you to them, without these people, this tribute would certainly never have emerged.
