Scorched Tundra XII Announces Tickets on Sale; Monolord, Thou and More Playing

Posted in Whathaveyou on June 13th, 2022 by JJ Koczan

Scorched Tundra XII will be held in Chicago on Sept. 1-3, and its three-night duration looks admirably not-totally-overwhelming, bigger on quality than filler and seems to use its time well in tapping the Myopia collaboration between Thou and Mizmor that made its debut at Roadburn for a first-time-in-the-US set headlining the final night. I’m starting to get annoyed that I haven’t seen REZN yet and Monolord put out their second best-album-of-their-career-so-far in a row last year, so yes, now would be a good time to catch them as well. Oh and whoever Earthless are, I’m sure they’re fine too.

That’s a joke of course. Someone on social media called it a request for Dorthia Cottrell and Monolord — who are touring together — to collaborate and I’ve had trouble getting the idea out of my head since then. Just about no way that wouldn’t be worth hearing. Let them cover Nina Simone or something. Or maybe have her sit in on “Your Time to Shine” if you want to keep it simple. Make an album if you don’t.

Good times in Chicago:

Scorched Tundra XI Starts Tonight in Chicago

Posted in Whathaveyou on August 30th, 2019 by JJ Koczan

Did you know it’s Labor Day weekend? I had no idea, but yeah, I guess we’re there. Look, I don’t know. I’m just trying to get through the days over here one at a time. All of a sudden it’s coming on autumn and the nights are getting colder and Black Cobra and Eyehategod are about to headline Scorched Tundra XI over the next two nights and I guess that means summer’s winding down. Chicago’s got two righteously curated bills to go with those headliners for the two-night event, as well as a badass poster to go with it, so if you happen to be in the area or, you know, live there, you might consider heading out to the show as an alternative to whatever else your plans were as you start your three-day weekend. Or four-day weekend. Or maybe you’re just unemployed and have some cash to go out. Either way, good shows deserve attendance, so attend.

Go with a friend. You strike me as the popular type. Go Whatsapp somebody and see if they’re free. I bet they are.

Dig it:

Scorched Tundra X Announces Lineup: Lair of the Minotaur, Monolord, Sumac, Yakuza & More to Play

Posted in Whathaveyou on May 25th, 2018 by JJ Koczan

Tickets are on sale now for the Chicago-based fest Scorched Tundra X, which will run two nights on Aug. 31 and Sept. 1 and feature two very particular Chicagoan outfits in its lineup. I’m talking about half-man-half-bull-in-china-shop metallers Lair of the Minotaur and pre-post-metal post-metallers Yakuza. Neither band plays out all that often, and neither band has put out a record in half a decade, so it’s definitely two performances worth catching if you can, and that’s of course to say nothing about the rest of the bill for the two-dayer, which includes Swedish riffkings Monolord, the atmospherically crushing Sumac as well as fuzzers Telekinetic Yeti opening night one and Couch Slut and In the Company of Serpents leading the way on night two.

Pretty badass, and obviously put together with a strong sense of place and vibe behind it and a drive to give those assembling for it something special to behold. I can dig.

If you can too:

Scorched Tundra’s mission is to give a new generation of talented artists a unique live platform in Gothenburg and Chicago. The festival’s billing – based on sound, not stature – creates an unparalleled aural experience for its audience.

“The process of selecting bands for the tenth edition of this festival began over a year ago. For this momentous occasion, I sought bands that have forged their own space at the convergence of heavy, progressive and dark music. Scorched Tundra’s mission is to give a new generation of talented artists from Gothenburg and Chicago a unique platform. The tenth lineup achieves this, while also mixing in extremely talented musicians from around the country. I look forward to sharing this exceptional lineup at The Empty Bottle on Labor Day Weekend.” states organizer Alexi D. Front.

Tickets for August 31st and September 1st will be $20 per night, and more exciting festival details will be revealed in the coming weeks.

Scorched Tundra VIII Announces Lineup with Acid King, Oxbow, The Atomic Bitchwax and More

Posted in Whathaveyou on June 27th, 2017 by JJ Koczan

In all places and in all things, I remain a sucker for a good bill. I’ll be elsewhere this same weekend, as The Obelisk is presenting the Emerald Haze festival in Dublin, Ireland (info here), and I’ve been fortunate enough to be invited over for that, but a good bill is a good bill, and if you happen to be in Chicago or can head that way, Scorched Tundra VIII has one to offer, with Acid King, The Atomic Bitchwax and Oxbow positioned as headliners across three nights from Sept. 1-3 at The Empty Bottle.

Those names are enough to grab attention, to be sure, but toss in the post-metallic breadth of Minsk, perpetual sludge scumbags FistulaPelican offshoot RLYR (only fair since it’s Chicago after all), and others, and yeah, it looks like a damn fine way to spend a couple of nights, provided your calendar doesn’t conflict.

Tickets are available now and you’ll find those links and more info below, courtesy of the fest:

Scorched Tundra’s mission is to give a new generation of talented artists a unique live platform in Chicago and Gothenburg. Scorched Tundra’s billing – based on sound not stature – creates a unique aural experience for the audience. “The forthcoming eighth edition was the most enjoyable to put together as the lineup is extremely eclectic and in many ways different from past iterations. All of these artists are newcomers to Scorched Tundra; they are very difficult to pigeonhole; and transcend categorization. Intimate, historic, and highly respected, The Empty Bottle in Chicago will once again play as a perfect host to this unique set of artists,” states organizer Alexi Front.

Scorched Tundra VIII marks the event’s much anticipated return to Chicago after last years two day sold out event. The third ever Scorched Tundra beer – brewed in collaboration with Pipeworks Brewing Company –an India Pale Ale dry hopped with Australian and American aromatic varietals – will be available at select bars and stores in Chicago in August and at the festival. Longtime Scorched Tundra collaborator Axel Widén created artwork for the beer label and festival poster. Seven other Pipeworks beers will be available as part of a tap takeover throughout Scorched Tundra VIII.
