audiObelisk: The Dirty Streets Premiere New Scion A/V Single “One for You”

Posted in audiObelisk on February 4th, 2014 by JJ Koczan

Late in 2013, Scion A/V sent Memphis heavy rockers The Dirty Streets into the studio to record a new song, and on Feb. 11, they’ll release the resulting track as a split 7″ with Canadian duo Indian Handcrafts. Ahead of that release, I’ve got the pleasure of streaming and hosting a free download of “One for You,” which represents the first audio to come from The Dirty Streets since their 2013 third album and Alive Naturalsound debut, Blades of Grass (review here), which hit last summer at what seemed just the right moment to coincide with its organic, vintage-feeling shuffle.

For anyone who heard that record, the trio of Justin Toland (guitars/vocals), Thomas Storz (bass) and Andrew Denham (drums) sound a bit more spacious on “One for You.” Denham‘s drums start the song and even before Toland‘s guitar echoes kick in with Storz‘s reliably smooth bassline eases the way into the first verse, you can hear the big-room sensibility that plays out through the song. At the same time, The Dirty Streets sound increasingly at home in their sound, not necessarily coasting creatively — Toland‘s vocals are more his own here than they’ve yet been on a studio work from the band — but confident in their ability to do what they do.

And what’s that? Well, boogie. “One for You” is a classic funkified blues groove of the kind that seems to come so naturally to The Dirty Streets and with thanks to the crew at Scion A/V, I’m thrilled to be able to host the premiere for your perusal below ahead of the single’s release next week. Please enjoy:

Wino Wednesday: The Obsessed, “The Way She Fly” Live at Scion Rock Fest 2013

Posted in Bootleg Theater on August 21st, 2013 by JJ Koczan

Last year, Maryland doom pioneers The Obsessed came back together for a gig at Roadburn 2012 (review here) and a steady stream of reunion slots has followed. They hit Hellfest last year in France, and in 2013, they’ve appeared at Power of the Riff in L.A., Maryland Deathfest and the Scion Rock Fest, as well as probably a few others I’m forgetting. Guitarist/vocalist Scott “Wino” Weinrich and drummer Greg Rogers have had to bring in Rwake bassist Reid Raley along the way to replace Guy Pinhas — most recently found performing with Victor Griffin’s In~Graved, and then not — but they’ve only done more and more shows.

Given the increased frequency of appearances — from “none” to “some” — I can’t help but wonder if a studio return from The Obsessed might be in the works as well. I haven’t heard anything yes or no, or seen word public or private about it, so it’s pure speculation on my part, but given everything Wino‘s been through musically since the release of The Obsessed‘s 1994 outing, The Church Within, all the bands he’s been in, development he’s undergone as a player and as a songwriter, I can’t help but wonder what he might be able to bring to a new batch of The Obsessed material. Would it keep to the straightforward traditions of the self-titled, or touch on some of the more heavy rock-oriented vibes of Wino‘s work since in bands like Spirit Caravan, Premonition 13 and his own Wino trio.

The Obsessed has always had a singular vibe within the Wino pantheon, arguably the most doomed of the acts in which he’s played guitar (that is, everything other than Saint Vitus), but 20 years is a long time and who knows what a new record might bring with Rogers and Raley as the rhythm section taking part in the songwriting.

While I daydream on it, here’s The Obsessed on June 1, 2013 at the Scion Rock Fest in Memphis, Tennessee, breathing new life into “The Way She Fly,” the second track off the self-titled album. Enjoy and have a great Wino Wednesday.

VIDEO PREMIERE: Scion A/V Interviews Roadburn Records Crew; Earthless & White Hills Split EP Now Available

Posted in Bootleg Theater on April 3rd, 2013 by JJ Koczan

Stay with me, friends, because there’s a lot going on here. Last November, Scion A/V and Roadburn Records got together in Hollywood to put on a label showcase at the Roxy. By all accounts, it was a ritzy affair. Red carpet, Orange amps, Blue Velvet, green horseshoes, the whole nine. Okay, I don’t know any of that, but whatever. On the bill were Enslaved, Astra, White Hills and Earthless. You don’t need me to tell you that’s a hell of a show.

Okay. At this gig of gigs, Earthless and White Hills had some material recorded, and that’s being presented today as a FREE DOWNLOAD LIVE EP at the Scion A/V website. I’ve also included the widget below for your convenience. Needless to say, both bands are in top form, because when the dudes from Roadburn come to town, you don’t want to let anything slide.

In addition to the aforementioned EP, which features the wah-drenched 12-minute “Red” from Earthless and 7:38 antigrav excursion “Under Skin or by Name” by White Hills, the Scion A/V team also sat down with the Roadburn Records crew — Jurgen van den Brand (note his 35007 shirt; awesome) and Jean-Paul van Steen — to talk about the formation of the label and how you sell music in the post-download age.

The clips provide an intensely fascinating look behind the scenes, and of course the EP is choice, so I’m thrilled to present the premiere of both below.

Scion A/V Releases Split EP Featuring EARTHLESS and WHITE HILLS

Celebrated Space Rock Bands Team Up, Deliver Herculean Cosmic Sound

Scion A/V, the creative enterprise of Scion devoted to the discovery, nurture, funding and distribution of compelling music and arts programming today releases a special two track, 20 minute EP featuring the heavy sounds of San Diego cosmonauts EARTHLESS and Brooklyn astral rockers WHITE HILLS. Recorded in November, 2012 at the world famous Roxy in Hollywood as part of the Scion-presented Roadburn Records label showcase, the free EP features EARTHLESS performing the stargazing track “Red” and WHITE HILLS delivering the boundless cut “Under Skin or by Name.” The EP is available as a free download now at ScionAV.com.

“Roadburn is an influential rock festival that is well respected internationally,” ?comments Jeri Yoshizu, manager of sales promotion for Scion. “We love what they do and wanted to be the first to bring Roadburn to the U.S.”?

EARTHLESS was formed in 2001 by Mario Rubalcaba, Isaiah Mitchell and Mike Eginton with the desire to create music incorporating a wide array of influences ranging from diverse bands (from Flower Travelin’ Band, Jimi Hendrix and Hawkwind to The Birthday Party, Can and Rory Gallagher, to name a few) re-imagined and born to stand on its own. Described by Rubalcaba as a “heavy, loud, sonic mind melt,” the music of EARTHLESS features epic instrumental passages that have solidified the California trio as one of the must-see heavy psych rock bands on the planet today.

WHITE HILLS is guitarist Dave W., bassist Ego Sensation and drummer Nick Name. The New York group twists beauteous, brain-tenderizing riffs into tight spirals of sound that succeed through sheer momentum. Paying just as close attention to the quiet moments as the raging ones, WHITE HILLS’ songs are a push-pull between churning and floating, abandon and control. The end result is invigorating deep space rock that’s built to be performed (and experienced) live.

Track listing:
1.) EARTHLESS “Red” (12:31)
2.) WHITE HILLS “Under Skin or by Name” (7:38)

EXCLUSIVE: Saint Vitus Offer Free Download of New Scion A/V Live EP; Tour Starts Tonight!

Posted in Features on September 13th, 2012 by JJ Koczan

I’ve done some cool shit in my day. Traveled places I thought I’d never go, seen things I never thought I’d see, and today, it’s my extreme fucking honor to exclusively host for free download a new Scion A/V Metal live EP from the gods themselves, Saint Fucking Vitus.

Get it right here:

The three songs on this new Saint Vitus live EP were recorded earlier this year at the Scion Rock Fest in Tampa, Florida, and there’s a good chance you’ve never heard Dave Chandler‘s guitar sound as buzzsaw-vicious as it does on this version of “The Bleeding Ground.” Full tracklist is as follows:

1. Mystic Lady
2. The Bleeding Ground
3. Born too Late

The occasion we’re marking — other than heretofore unseen levels of awesomeness — is the beginning tonight of Saint Vitus‘ tour with Weedeater and the reportedly at-least-somewhat-revamped lineup of Sourvein.

Saint Vitus will have a limited run of 600 copies 12″ vinyl pressing of the EP available at shows starting early next week, with the Jermaine Rogers artwork screenprinted on the cover.

Don’t miss the tour when it dooms through:
