Desertfest Berlin 2020: Witchcraft, Amenra, 1000mods, The Vintage Caravan & More Added

Posted in Whathaveyou on November 11th, 2019 by JJ Koczan

desertfest berlin 2020 banner

Desertfest Berlin 2020’s second lineup announcement arrives in coordinated fashion with that of Desertfest London 2020, and even so, finds the two festivals beginning to distinguish themselves from each other. Of course, there are shared factors — Witchcraft will play both, as well as Spirit Adrift — but while there’s always a chance some bands from the one will still be added to the other, as of now, Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs, 1000modsAmenra and The Vintage Caravan are exclusive to the German edition of the festival series. I have zero insight or insider information to offer, so we’ll see if it stays that way, but for now, both Spring Desertfests seem to be growing on their own into something badass, sharing a bit but also having plenty to stand apart.

And Witchcraft headlining certainly doesn’t hurt either. I mean, really.

Here’s the Berlin announcement:

desertfest berlin 2020 poster

WITCHCRAFT, AMENRA, 1000MODS, THE VINTAGE CARAVAN, PIGS PIGS PIGS PIGS PIGS PIGS PIGS and SPIRIT ADRIFT confirmed for DESERTFEST BERLIN 2020!!!

Friends, here we goooooo!

They belong to the most distinctive bands of the Swedish psychedelic classic rock, their sound influenced the heavy rock scene for decades, but they also rarely appear live on stage: The more we are proud to welcome legendary Witchcraft in 2020! This show will already mark a true milestone and unforgettable highlight in the history of Desertfest.

Joining them on the bill are atmospheric post-metal overlords, Amenra, who will turn the ARENA BERLIN stage into a mesmerizing sound landscape. Putting all their heart and soul into every note, word and visuals, AMENRA change the course of people’s lives everywhere their path leads them. After London and their highly acclaimed show at the Electric Ballroom last year, we’re thrilled to become a part of this path in 2020. And because your wish is our command: They are one of the most beloved and requested bands on our socials – yes, your prayers have been heard!

Greek fuzz rock unit 1000mods, THE hottest band in within the current heavy rock scene, will be finally back at Desertfest Berlin. On this special show you’ll be listening to some amazing new tunes from their upcoming album (which is recorded as we “speak” in Seattle), for the very first time! With an average age of nearly 23 years old, Icelandic rockers The Vintage Caravan show a maturity worthy of any band that has been on the road for decades. When the band got on stage at the 2012 edition of the Icelandic Eistnaflug festival, the trio was only allowed to enter the venue accompanied by their parents. The charismatic band released 3 critically acclaimed records to date, their career has been impressive while they toured the globe with bands alike Europe, Blues Pills, Grand Magus or just currently with Opeth to name just a few. Desertfesters, bring your mums and dads, too, when THE VINTAGE CARAVAN will roll over our beloved Desertfest Berlin in 2020!

Furthermore we will see Newcastle’s maximalists, Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs, whose riffs, raw power and rancour have blazed a trail across the darker quarters of the underground in the last five years, finally bring their mighty tsunami of rancorous riffage and unholy abjection over us in Berlin!

Last but not least, today’s’ second and killer announcement will be rounded up by Phoenix-based, Spirit Adrift, who are carving out a sound now patently its own. Lazily labelled Doom by some, the band is in fact the true representation of what modern Heavy Metal should sound like.? Folks, we hope you dig this second announcement as much as we do, while dozens of bands are still to be announced in the weeks ahead!

Treat yourself or your loved ones with an early X-Mas gift, and purchase your Weekend Ticket now at: www.desertfest.de

We can’t wait to party with ya’ll at our 9th edition, May 1st – 3rd at DesertFest Berlin 2020!

Desertfest London 2017: Individual Day Schedules Announced

Posted in Whathaveyou on January 30th, 2017 by JJ Koczan

I have no problem admitting to feeling overwhelmed looking at the full lineup and individual day splits for Desertfest London 2017. I mean, seriously. Look at that poster. What a way to spend a weekend.

Likewise, I have few grand reflections to offer in light of that overwhelming feeling, except perhaps to take a step back and be massively impressed at how much this event has grown in just six incarnations. Along with Desertfest Berlin, the London edition has become an anchor not only for the UK heavy rock underground — which is well represented here as ever in Elephant TreeBlack SpidersStubbVodunPigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs PigsTerminal CheesecakeChubby Thunderous Bad Kush MastersMammoth Weed Wizard Bastard, and so on — but for bands from abroad as well. You’ll note the three headliners: two American, one Norwegian, and the next line down on the poster is two Swedish, one American. Desertfest London 2017’s reach feels wider than ever. Staring at the final lineup, it’s clear just how much of a big fucking deal this festival has become.

Wish I could be there to see it.

Here’s the announcement of the individual day lineups from their website:

desertfest london 2017

DESERTFEST 2017 DAY SPLITS AND DAY TICKETS ARE HERE!

Finally, the Desertfest 2017 day and stage splits are here, along with individual day tickets. It’s the point of the year where you can start planning the weekend, you can imagine the sets in your head and you can curse those god damned clashes.

Last things first, let’s get straight to that insane Sunday main-stage. To celebrate The Roundhouse joining the Desertfest family, we made their debut appearance something special. Not only will stoner doom icons Sleep be topping the bill, but the Roundhouse hosts a full bill of huge acts. Candlemass, with over three decades of underground acclaim to their name, bring the epic doom metal. USA’s Wolves in the Throne Room bring the atmospheric black metal. Traditional doom metal stalwarts Saint Vitus bring the classic riffs. And how about this for a ‘curtain jerker’? Bongzilla bring the raw weed metal for their second show of the weekend; more on the first later.

It’s not just about the Sunday though. Friday’s stage at the Electric Ballroom is headlined by returning heroes Slo Burn whose short run in the mid 90s furthered the then fledgling stoner rock scene. One band they surely had an impact on is Lowrider, who play Europe’s finest stoner rock alongside them. Ukraine’s Stoned Jesus celebrate their resonant album Seven Thunders Roar, and 1000Mods and Pontiak round up the main stage on the Friday.

The Electric Ballroom on Saturday will be swarming with Turbojugends as death-punk grandmasters Turbonegro turn Camden into party central. John Garcia sticks around for a solo show, sure to feature classics from his years of nonstop mastery in the stoner rock scene. Sheffield’s rock and roll five piece Black Spiders visit London for one last time on their farewell tour, with Satan’s Satyrs and Avon rounding up the main stage.

As ever though, it doesn’t stop at the main stages. Our regular partners have delivered three stages with diverse lineups. Human_Disease_Promo and When Planets Collide take over The Underworld on Saturday in a bill headlined by Bongzilla with a special set celebrating the band’s early work. The Quietus stage is led by synth wavers Zombi, and Nightshift Promotions bring an eclectic mix led by Hungary’s Apey & the Pea. To be honest, just stick a pin in the lineup poster and you’re guaranteed a good time.

For those who can’t make the full weekend, we have a limited number of individual day tickets. Priced at £40 for Friday tickets, £40 for Saturday tickets and £45 for Sunday tickets, links are below.

So there we have it. Our final lineup for Desertfest 2017. We hope you’re as excited as we are to get back to Camden this April and riff London to the ground.

Desertfest London 2017: Candlemass, Lowrider, Venomous Maximus, Stubb and More Added

Posted in Whathaveyou on November 22nd, 2016 by JJ Koczan

You were either there or you’re an imaginative sort, so I don’t need to tell you what a joy it was to see Lowrider when they played Desertfest London in 2013 (review here). They were also recently announced for Desertfest Berlin (info here), so to have them return to Camden Town for Desertfest London 2017 isn’t necessarily a huge surprise in the grand scheme, but I’m quite sure they’ll find fervent welcome when they get there, and rightly so. It’s been a long time speculating about whether or not they’ll do another record, and they may yet get there, but either way, the fact that they’re still actively playing out on choice gigs like this one is encouraging.

Also announced today? Oh, only Swedish doom legends Candlemass, Texans Venomous Maximus heading abroad for a trip that — and I’m not exaggerating — will likely triple their fanbase because that’s how good they are live, fellow Texans The Well, with whom I wouldn’t be surprised if Venomous Maximus were traveling, London heavy highlights Stubb, jammers Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs, Greek forerunners 1000mods, plus WucanBlack Spiders and Grave Lines. Kind of hard to believe Desertfest London 2017 is only two rounds into lineup announcements, but like I said, you’re imaginative, so I’m sure you can picture some of the awesomeness still to come as we get closer to April.

Here’s word from the fest:

desertfest-london-2017-new-poster-candlemass

CANDLEMASS, LOWRIDER AND MORE JOIN DESERTFEST 2017

DESERTFEST LONDON is pleased to announce the second batch of bands who will be joining the likes of Turbonegro, Samsara Blues Experiment, Yuri Gagarin and Vodun on April 28-29-30th, 2017 in Camden. Ever-growing diversity alongside a solid selection of grass-root acts, has helped cement Desertfest as the go-to festival for doom, stoner rock, psych and all its subsidiaries, with a sixth edition set to be the most eclectic and heavy to date.

First up, we are honoured to welcome a band that needs no introduction: legendary doom metallers CANDLEMASS. Encompassing the ethos of what Desertfest has meant since its inception, Candlemass are one of the most influential and celebrated doom bands in not only Sweden’s musical history, but in heavy music history as a whole. Pure, unapologetic, true doom metal that’ll never disappoint.

A second offering from the Swedes comes in the form of stoner rock stalwarts LOWRIDER. Back in 2013, their momentous reunion after a 10-year hiatus took place exclusively at Desertfest London. It’s a privilege to once again host the return of the riff-ready heroes, who have been bringing their desert-sound to revellers since the late 90s. Also on the bill are UK party boys BLACK SPIDERS, whose fast-paced, high voltage lunacy will rattle out the cobwebs. Despite having recently announced a hiatus, these rock’n’roll maniacs will come back at Desertfest for one last blowout.

1000MODS will too be bringing their psychedelic vibrations to 2017’s line-up. Their unique commitment to a vintage sound, held up by playing with classic instruments, undoubtedly makes them a must-see act on any bill. Underground heroes PIGS, PIGS, PIGS, PIGS, PIGS, PIGS, PIGS also make a welcome addition, with their loud and exciting blend of psych, noise and post-rock. Austin based trio THE WELL are jumping over the pond to thrash out their progressive take on heavy rock, taking that classic nostalgia and twisting it with a hearty laden of adrenaline.

London’s very own STUBB will lay out their fuzzy blues at Desertfest – greatly influenced by the 60 & 70s trio’s of the same genre, they’ve gained respect as a sold live act. Germany’s WUCAN describe themselves as “Topsy-Turvy Higgledy-Piggledy Folk-Blues-Psych-Stoner-ProtoMetal-Soul, with a pinch of confusion” – which may sound like all-over chaos, but they have truly honed their style thanks to an expert fusion of 70’s drenched goodness.

Final acts to join Desertfest London 2017 are metal killers Austin’s VENOMOUS MAXIMUS, newcomers GRAVE LINES – one of the most exciting bands to come out of London – trust us, you’ll want to be there, as they are soon to become one of those acts everyone claims they heard first.

We are proud and excited for what next year has in store. But this is only the tip of the iceberg as there is much, much more to come. Stay tuned!

Reverence Valada 2016 Adds Dead Meadow, The Cult of Dom Keller and More

Posted in Whathaveyou on January 21st, 2016 by JJ Koczan

reverence valada 2016 banner

Portugal-based fest Reverence Valada 2016 pretty much had me at Zone Six, but they continue nonetheless to add to their impressive lineup of offbeat rock — Killing Joke, Ozric Tentacles — and various forms of heavy, from With the Dead to Yawning Man. This batch of additions features UK punk legends The Damned and shoegaze progenitors Dead Meadow along with Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs, The Cult of Dom Keller and Mécanosphèere, but of particular note are San Francisco’s LSD and the Search for God.

The resurgent Bay Area act just released their first EP in nine years, Heaven is a Place, which you can stream in full below, and if you’re looking for some of that dripping-wet West Coast dream-psych, they do it with particularly resonant attention to tonality and an underlying pop touch. Something that piqued my interest, might pique yours.

Here’s the latest announcement from the fest:

reverence valada 2016 poster

The Damned, Dead Meadow and four other bands confirmed for REVERENCE VALADA in September!

Portugal-based heavy and psych festival REVERENCE VALADA have just confirmed six new bands to play their third edition, including British punk legends The Damned. The festival will take place in Valada from September 8th to September 10th.

British punk forerunners THE DAMNED will celebrate the 40th anniversary of their first single “New Rose” this year at London’s Royal Albert Hall in May, where they’re set to play in front of 5,500 fans. Formed in 1976 in London, they are considered as one of the most influential punk groups along the Sex Pistols and The Clash. This Reverence Valada appearance will be their first show ever in Portugal.

Formed in 1998 in Washington, DEAD MEADOW is one of the finest indie psyche rock acts of the modern era. Among their nine studio and live albums, we can count collaborations with Steve Kille, Andrew Stockdale (Wolfmother), Anton Newcombe (Brian Jonestown Massacre) and many more. Their latest widely acclaimed album “Warble Womb” was released in 2013.

DIY alchemists THE CULT OF DOM KELLER are creators of whacked out soundscapes and songs that seem to come from another universe, all from the confines of their sonic bunker. After gracing the stages of Austin Psych Fest and Roadburn, they will once again enthrall European fans with their appearance at Reverence Festival.

San Francisco’s LSD & THE SEARCH FOR GOD have developed a must-see reputation within the underground psychedelic/shoegaze/space rock community. 2016 will be the year they will tour Europe for the very first time.

Operating in “chaos rock” territories, MÉCANOSPHÈERE is an international music and art performance collective rooted in Portugal. Blending spoken word, concrete and cosmic music, ghost jazz, the 10-year band will offer a theatrical and versatile show at Reverence Valada. Our sixth band confirmed is UK’s sludge/doom/noisemongers PIGS PIGS PIGS PIGS PIGS PIGS PIGS.

Sonic Mass Weekender Set for Feb. 20 & 21

Posted in Whathaveyou on February 3rd, 2015 by JJ Koczan

Space WitchHey ColossusPigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs PigsDune, and others will take part in the Sonic Mass weekender, a two-night space/sludge freakout happening in Edinburgh, Scotland, on Feb. 20 and 21. The deal is put on by Pisschrist Promotions (one imagines they’re wondering where their savior is now) and Echoes and Dust, and since it looks like a solid way to spend what I’m sure will be some lovely weather in Scotland in February, it seemed prudent to post the info for anyone who might happen to find themselves out that way at the time. So that’s why we’re here. In case it wasn’t obvious.

Which I’m sure it was.

Okay then, off to the PR wire:

sonic mass poster

Pisschrist Promotions & Echoes and Dust present Sonic Mass Weekender – 20th/21st February – Bannermans Bar, Edinburgh

“Some of us like riffs so much we not only want them to completely destroy our minds but but also conjure new worlds and let us explore them. Luckily, we’ve entered golden age of heavier bands becoming increasingly progressive, pushing new boundaries and delivering on the above in a variety of weird and wonderful ways.” – Rich Collins, Cosmic Carnage co-founder & Echoes and Dust writer

Established doom promoters Pisschrist Promotions are teaming up with Echoes and Dust’s metal team to present the inaugural Sonic Mass Weekender – 2 days of space-rock, prog, sludge, doom and noise in the infamous surroundings of Bannermans Bar in Edinburgh.

Headlined by Hey Colossus on Friday and Space Witch on Saturday, with Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs, Dune, Voe, Ommadon, BRITNEY, Buried Sleeper and Star Turbine all making appearances, you can expect a full assault on all your senses. Tickets are available at just £13.50 for the whole weekend from here. More info is available on the Sonic Mass Facebook event page here.

“This is a breakthrough event which is more than worth hopping on a train, plane or space craft for. It’s co hosted by Pisschrist Promotions, the most prominent doom promoter north of the border and Sander, the Metal Editor for Echoes and Dust who’s owed a pint by pretty much every heavy band on the planet for his services to the scene.” – Rich Collins

Here is the Music Player. You need to installl flash player to show this cool thing!

I didn’t realize, but it’s been over a year now since I started putting together podcasts regularly again. Almost 14 months, actually. Goes quick. I’m still having a good time doing them though. It’s become kind of a late-night ritual for me, assembling the audio and putting the tracklisting together and uploading everything the night before it goes live. It’s heading toward one in the morning as I type this. Long since asleep, The Patient Mrs. calls it “JJ time.” Fair enough.

A few twists and turns in this one, so watch out. I was all getting on some rocking vibes with Brant Bjork and that He Whose Ox is Gored, but after The Golden Grass things took a pretty wild turn. You may not have heard Atomikylä yet, but it’s players from Dark Buddha Rising and Oranssi Pazuzu, so it gets pretty bleak pretty quick. From there, it’s just further into doom with MossApostle of Solitude and The Sabbathian before Godflesh — as only they can — provide a slap back to reality. The second hour, as habit dictates, is a full-on freakout. That Olson/Shively/Barry track is members of Across Tundras and the album was just released, so if you get the chance to check it out, I’d say go for it. In the meantime, enjoy:

First Hour:
Brant Bjork and the Low Desert Punk, “Stokely up Now” from Black Power Flower (2014)
He Whose Ox is Gored, “Buried Twice” from Rumors 7” (2014)
Weed is Weed, “Eat Cookies” from Blunt Force Trauma (2014)
The Golden Grass, “The Robin Song” from Realisations (2014)
Atomikylä, “Ihmiskallo” from Erkale (2014)
Moss, “Carmilla (Marcilla)” from Carmilla (2014)
Apostle of Solitude, “Luna” from Of Woe and Wounds (2014)
The Sabbathian, “Nightshade Eternal” from Ritual Rites (2014)
Godflesh, “Life Giver Life Taker” from A World Lit Only by Fire (2014)
Lords of Beacon House, “Cool Water Blues” from Lords of Beacon House (2014)

Second Hour:
Geezer, “Tales of Murder and Unkindness” from Gage (2014)
Olson/Shively/Barry, “Jagged Cliffs” from Tierra del Fuego Blues (2014)
Dead Sea Apes, “Threads” from High Evolutionary (2014)
Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs, “Psychopomp” from Psychopomp (2014)

Total running time: 1:59:36

Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs’ Psychopomp EP out Now

Posted in Whathaveyou on October 14th, 2014 by JJ Koczan

Pigs Live

UK five-piece Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs issued their new two-track release, Psychopomp, first as a cassette in an edition of 50 copies, and, somewhat unsurprisingly, they’re gone. Just 48 hours after they came, they went. Fair enough. For the rest of us who let slip their chance to dig into “Psychopomp” or its foreboding, drone-fueled Joseph Curwen remix — each of the two tracks clocking in at 20 minutes, which makes for one hell of a cassingle — Box Records has made it available to stream and download in its freaked-out entirety.

Both “Psychopomp” and its remix — which one would hardly recognize were they not right next to each other — serve as a reminder to pay closer attention next time, as the cumbersomely-named band’s blend of heavy psych, noise and post-rock is one I’d certainly rather not miss. Lesson learned.

This from the PR wire:

pigs pigs pigs pigs pigs pigs pigs psychopomp

Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs – Psychopomp Available Now

Following their sold out 2013 split 12″ with The Cosmic Dead, Newcastle based psychedelic rocking composers Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs (members of Ommadon, Blown Out, Khünnt) return with their sophomore opus – Psychopomp. The band once again meld their take on doom, psyche, stoner and classic to offer up 20 plus minutes of solid riffage and towering carnage. Citing so many genres may be cause for concern, but anyone familiar with their acclaimed debut ‘The Wizard and The Seven Swines’ will be aware of the band’s inexplicable ability to emphatically rock out through many styles whilst serving up a completely congruent and engaging listen.

True to form Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs adhered to the mysticism surrounding their band by presenting ‘Psychopomp’ on Box Records without fan fair on a run of 50 cassettes which sold out in just 2 days. There will be a second run of cassettes released when the planets fall freely through the cosmos and align when random probability dictates. Until then ‘Psychopomp’ is available as a digital download through Box Records which includes a completely mangled remix by Lovecraft inspired droner Joseph Curwen.

The Cosmic Dead & Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Split Due in November

Posted in Whathaveyou on October 4th, 2013 by JJ Koczan

As we move into the weekend, looking back at the responsibilities we’ve shirked over the last five days — wave bye-bye! — what could be better to drift away with than 40-odd minutes of glorious space jamming? To that end, I bring notice of a new split between Scottish instrumentalists The Cosmic Dead and British outfit Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs, whose name gets more and more satisfying to type every time I do it. Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs. Yup. I can work with that.

They’re doing it up on vinyl through The Old Noise — pre-orders are available — but both tracks are available to stream now, so if you don’t want to wait to bask in a sampling of the exploratory fuzz, there’s no need to delay. You’ll find the player at bottom under the following PR wire info about the release:

The Cosmic Dead / Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Split 12” on 180g virgin vinyl

TON001 – Available 8th November 2013

The premiere release on Newcastle UK label The Old Noise sees two analogous bands form a split release kinship through astral projection and sonic charged travel. Glasgow’s The Cosmic Dead and Newcastle’s Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs offer two 20 minute plus tracks of aural yin and yang.

Following a highly successful performance at this year’s Roadburn festival, The Cosmic Dead return with their now familiar sound of smoked out space-rock fuzz. ‘Djamba’ gently drifts on an entrancing wave of psyched out hypno-dub bliss before the quartet rocket out of the atmosphere with all the vitality and spirit they are revered for. The Cosmic Dead are renowned for effortlessly combining swirling synth and spaced out guitar reverberation with orbiting, memorising groove, all of which are expertly balanced throughout ‘Djamba’.

Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs’ offering is their debut recording, ‘The Wizard & the Seven Swines’. Where The Cosmic Dead provide a smooth ascension into the cosmos, Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs head full throttle into a black hole. The north east anglo travellers propel into their doomed voyage with pulsating motorik rhythm and 70s crunch. ‘The Wizard & the Seven Swines’ reaches its final destination with apocalyptic riffs and nihilistic mantra.

Both sides mastered by James Plotkin (Khanate, SunnO))), Earth). Artwork by Joe Hodgkiss.

Pre-orders at: www.theoldnoise.co.uk

Released by Newcastle label The Old Noise, its limited to a run of just 300 copies. The release date is November 8th, for which there will be a launch concert at the Head of Steam in Newcastle. (more details on that gig here)

Tracklisting:
Side A – Djamba (The Cosmic Dead)
Side B – The Wizard & The Seven Swines (Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs)
