German heavy psych mostly-instrumentalists Mother Engine are the latest band to join the lineup for Freak Valley 2016. They follow Windhand, who signed on at the end of last week, and will play supporting their 2015 album, Absturz, which was released last Spring. That record, which spanned about an hour in six long, flowing tracks, took some cues from My Sleeping Karma, Causa Sui and of course Colour Haze, but distinguished itself via its fluidity even as it traded out the overriding peaceful vibes of its early going for the later insistence of “Sonne,” one of the few tracks included to feature vocals.

Freak Valley 2016 announced them thusly:

One thing about instrumental bands is that they can be either really boring or simply amazing. When you think instrumental Stoner Rock the obvious comes to mind, Karma To Burn.

Well, Mother Engine sounds nothing like that. There is a trippy far-out vibe to this music that flows throughout without feeling forced. While there are your standard stoner rock riffing and groove, you are also rewarded with a mind-altering and climactic journey complimented by a suave and fantastic funkiness. This is chill-out music to the max, music that touches your soul, and makes you get lost in the music. Interesting and complex rhythms are added to keep you guessing where it will take you next.

Mother Engine, Absturz (2015)

Richmond doom forerunners Windhand released their third album, Grief’s Infernal Flower (review here), last fall via Relapse, and thereby continued the steamroller momentum they’ve had going for the last several years thanks to near-constant touring and a massive response to their studio output. It seems this summer will take them back to Europe, as they’ve been confirmed for Freak Valley 2016 in Netphen, Germany, and I’d imagine that will be one of many dates on a tour, since it’s Windhand and that’s kind of how they do. Haven’t seen a full announcement of that yet, but will keep an eye out.

Until then, the fest unveiled this badass poster by Mr. Frumpy (also of Seedy Jeezus) and confirmed their taking part thusly:

For a band who traffic in measured, unhurried riffage, Richmond’s Windhand have moved awfully quickly over the last few years. Founded in 2009, the VA quintet have been making waves since the release of their 2010 practice space demo, a two-track CD that garnered the band comparisons to artists like Electric Wizard, The Devil’s Blood, and Black Sabbath.

Take your time for Windhand and let them hypnotize you with their trippy, drawn-out and repetitive riffs deeply drenched in fuzz.

WINDHAND released their third full-length, Grief’s Infernal Flower, in 2015, a multifaceted slab of thundering stoner doom that Noisey has called “doom metal’s most anticipated album of the year.” It is massive, heavy, and personal, a modern testament to the power of doom and stoner metal’s legacies.

Frontwoman Dorthia Cottrell firmly establishes herself as one of the best vocalists of the genre by perfectly balancing beauty with enormous power, and the twin-guitar attack of Garrett Morris and Asechiah Bogdan weaves together nine songs of perfect riffs and fuzzed-out bliss. That often-delicate splendor is all tempered by the colossal rhythmic mastery of bassist Parker Chandler and drummer Ryan Wolfe, whose lower-register expertise serves as the backbone of the new record. Windhand, Grief’s Infernal Flower (2015)

Even as I was posting up the news of the last addition to the lineup for Freak Valley 2016, the German fest went ahead and added another band. And not just any other band — the added Orange frickin’ Goblin, who join on as a headliner for the fest, set for the end of May in Netphen. The UK doom lords join the ranks of Graveyard and Dead Meadow, and will no doubt provide ample riot fodder as they always do, having marked their 20th anniversary last year. You can see a clip from their annual holiday tour for “Acid Trial” below. They kill. It’s just what they do.

Any night they show up, that’s a good night. And they always show up. Freak Valley 2016 had this to say on the subject:

Orange Goblin, “Acid Trial” live in Wolverhampton, Dec. 3, 2015

Norwegian beardly fivesome The Devil and the Almighty Blues offered up their self-titled debut (review here) in 2015 and made one of last year’s finer opening statements with it. It would seem that what the Oslo troupe have discovered since that time is that their particular style of classic heavy is just what listeners around Europe and beyond have been looking for; the Blues for the Red Sun Records release continues to resonate and find an audience. They took most of the winter off, if social media is anything to go by (and it may or may not be, of course; entirely possible they were writing or doing something other than playing out during that time), but in May they’ll join a vast and international array of acts as part of the lineup for Freak Valley 2016.

I do not know how many more acts Freak Valley 2016 has to add. I’ve kept up as best I can with their one-at-a-time announcements since late last year, but no question that however much fuller it gets, the bill is stacked. You can see the full list below, under their welcoming for The Devil and the Almighty Blues, which goes like this:

Norwegian heavy riffers THE DEVIL AND THE ALMIGHTY BLUES added to the Freak Valley Festival 2016 line-up

The Devil And The Almighty Blues are filled with a profound love for the old heroes of the Blues walking hand in hand with rock, metal, country and last but not least punk. Armed with vintage Gibson guitars and tube amplifiers, they play a new take on blues-based rock, heavy without becoming metal, slow without being doom, bluesy without being straight up and boring. The result turns out slow, heavy, melodic and raw.

When the 60’s turned into the 70’s there was a musical crossroads. The American blues had had its run with teens on both sides of the Atlantic long enough so that the blues-offspring named rock’n’roll had to expand or die. It did not die, it expanded in all kinds of directions! And right there in the crossroads between blues-based rock and all the world’s other sub-genres of rock, something happened to the blues. The format got experimented with, expanded and almost made unrecognizable. But at the same time the roots to the original ’real’ blues was never lost. Where Peter Green left Fleetwood Mac in 1970 with the track «Green Manalishi», where Johnny Winter stretched his musical legs, where ZZ Top bought Marshall full stacks and shot from the hip, and last but not least where the legend himself, Muddy Waters, stretched the limits of that was ’legal’ with the album «Electric Mud». And not to forget Hendrix, Free, Canned Heat and the rest of the gang from the Woodstock-era. The result was a highly electric musical revolution, where e.g. the newly born genre hard rock walked hand in hand with traditional delta blues.

It is out from this musical mud The Devil and the Almighty Blues have found their inspiration. Their music is slow, heavy, melodic and raw, all without losing the almighty blues out of sight.

The Devil and the Almighty Blues, The Devil and the Almighty Blues (2015)

I’d like to think that the complete lineup is confirmed for Freak Valley 2016, and the festival — which is long since sold out — is just piecemealing bands out one at a time for its followers so that those of us unfortunate enough to not have tickets can maximize our regret at that fact. Mission accomplished, Freak Valley. The German fest has picked up another act for its mighty three-day run, and this time around it’s Italian space magnates Giöbia, whose fourth album, Magnifier, came out late last year on Sulatron. The band also have a new video for 12-minute single “Sun Spectre,” which is actually down from the 15-minute version that appears on the record. Yup, it’s like that.

With the greatest joy we can announce that Italian heavy psych rockers GIÖBIA will appear at Freak Valley Festival 2016.

Giobia has been one of the most influential psychedelic bands in Italy over the last years. Seduced by the lysergic side of the ‘60s, by exotic mantras and the evocative power of space-rock, Giöbia is a band from Milano, Italy with many facets and one only faith, that is to turn every encounter with sound into a psychedelic experience.

The band counts four members: Bazu (vocals and string instruments), Saffo (organ, violin, vocals), Detrji (bass) and Betta (drums) and their name – Giöbia – comes from an ancient pre-christian festivity celebrated in Northern Italy when a big straw puppet resembling a witch is burnt as a propitiatory ritual towards the forces of nature.

The sound of their new album “Magnifier” is heavier and darker than before, but still unique and will reveal the intimate bond with bands and soundtrack’s composers of Horror and Thrilling Italian Police movies of the 70’s.

Giöbia, “Sun Spectre” official video

It’s been, what, hours since the last announcement from Freak Valley 2016? So yeah, we were due. The German fest seems to get increasingly badass by the band, and after delivering Danish newcomers The Sonic Dawn earlier this week, it has now confirmed that SoCal-ier-than-thou skate rockers The Shrine will take part in the weekend’s doings as well. The fest, if you can’t see it in the header above, takes place May 26-28. Anybody want to quit their job with me and fly out? Sounds like a good time, right? Baby Woodrose is gonna be there…

The art for The Shrine‘s poster is by David Paul Seymour — this isn’t the last time today I’ll be posting about his work — and the band heads over to Europe supporting their recently-issued third album, Rare Breed, which also marks their debut on Century Media. Freak Valley 2016 announced their addition as follows:

The Shrine, “Death to Invaders” official video

Danish heavy psych trio The Sonic Dawn are the latest addition to the formidable lineup of Freak Valley 2016. The German fest is set for May 26-28 and features Graveyard, Dead Meadow and Spidergawd, among many others, and The Sonic Dawn join the bill supporting last year’s engaging debut album, Perception (review here), which was released by Nasoni. That in itself should be enough of an endorsement for you to check it out if you haven’t, the long-running imprint’s taste is second to none the world over and they’ve been doing it long enough at this point to have seen the trend come, go and come again, but for whatever it’s worth I’ll add too that the record was dead on in its vibe and held much promise for where The Sonic Dawn might head long-term.

In the shorter-term, they’re heading to Germany. As announced by the fest:

The Sonic Dawn (formerly known as “The Mind Flowers”) has recently established a name for themselves in the psychedelic underground. Known for their energetic live performances and distinctive sound, The Sonic Dawn incorporates elements from the psychedelic music of the late 60s with their own atmospheric vibes.

A mix between a ’68 biker movie soundtrack and that summer of love vibe in a dreamy psychedelic soundscape. That’s just about how The Sonic Dawn’s music feels. October 2015 saw the world-wide release of the debut album ‘Perception’ on Nasoni Records, an audiophile psych/stoner label based in Berlin.

As an album Perception is a call for running wild and living free. It seeks to make you stop and appreciate the beautiful things in life, and break loose from all chains that prevent you from doing so.

A wise woman once said, “if I can’t dance, it’s not my revolution”. Fortunately there is plenty of dancing, lust and love in The Sonic Dawn’s universe… Take the ride?

The Sonic Dawn, Perception (2015)

Long-enough since sold out, German festival Freak Valley continues to add to its lineup one band at a time. I don’t know how long it will keep going in this fashion, but at this point I’d assume that as long as there are acts to be added, they’ll come out this way. Nothing against that process — obviously it’s worked pretty well for the fest, what with that being-sold-out and all — and in the case of a band like Toundra, it gives someone like me, who’s never heard them, a chance to get to know something new while also daydreaming about a festival that in all likelihood I’ll never be able to afford flying out to see. Fortunately, Toundra‘s music is pretty comforting.

The fest announced their taking part in the standard fashion:

Spanish Postrock wizards TOUNDRA will play Freak Valley Festival 2016

We are so proud to announce that our dear friends and almost-resident Vortex Surfer Musikclub-band Toundra will be joining this years FREAK VALLEY FESTIVAL. Bringing their experimental Postrock to birth in 2007 their talent immediately gathered attention from fans all around the globe.

With four albums out so far the Madrid based foursome has grown into one of the most exciting rock acts in Spain, selling out venues in their homeland but also conquering entire Europe with their compelling live shows. And that exactely is what it’s all about. TOUNDRAs live experience is all passion and joy packed into a dynamic rock explosion. Cheesy but true.
