Lifetime Shitlist Premiere Title-Track of New Album Bad Blood out Aug. 16

lifetime shitlist

Fucked times call for hard riffs. Baltimorean heavy punks Lifetime Shitlist will release their new album, Bad Blood, through Grimoire Records on Aug. 16. Like all of the label’s output, the quick, punch-you-in-the-gut-and-get-out 29-minute long-player was recorded by Noel Mueller. Preorders are up, if that’s your thing. The record is brief and blown out, like a strong current of hardcore punk and noise grown up and developed an affinity for thicker riffing, as songs like the opening title-track and the also-crash-happy “Double Blind” demonstrate, and there’s a balance between those sides as well as one between some of the instrumental subtlety at play and titles like “Proud Boys” and “Everyone Thinks They Will Survive the Apocalypse.” If you’re curious about the political alignment there — the chorus isn’t exactly “fuck proud boys,” and it probably should be, but the song hardly seems on board; I haven’t seen a lyric sheet — and the rest of Bad Blood doesn’t seem quite so direct, though if we’re talking about their basic stylistic approach, then we’re kind of talking about being punched in a face, and yes, that would be a fairly direct experience.

“Bad Blood” itself has a hook and slamdances into vibes out of ye olde crossover metal while the subsequent “Uncanny Valley” is pure bruiser all the way and “Not Yet” after “Double Blind” lifetime shitlist bad bloodfeels even more like fodder for getting stomped on at the show, despite a quickie guitar solo tossed in for good measure. As I know dick-all about hardcore, I approach the more heavy rocking 6:06 closer “The Ballad” with particular interest as it seems to adjust the balance more toward the heavy riffing style that’s underpinning some of the tracks elsewhere while still retaining the central force of the preceding cuts, like the transitional “Bonfire of the Vanities” right before it. It’s about two minutes longer than anything else on the record — the next closest is “Bad Blood” at 4:11 — and they use the extra time to flesh out the guitar and some more patience in the delivery more generally, taking off on an instrumental push in the last movement and fading out just before the six-minute mark. I dig that as a matter of principle, but their mission on the seven tracks before it is at least mostly something else. Still, it’s not such a radical departure as to be out of place so much as to add depth to what Lifetime Shitlist are doing elsewhere. In other words, they pull it off.

Again, the album is out Aug. 16. It’s Lifetime Shitlist‘s second for Grimoire after a 2014 self-titled, and though I’m a little confused as to why on earth anyone would give a crap what I think about it either way, you’ll find the streaming track on the player below.

I hope you enjoy:

LIFETIME SHITLIST’s rallying cry from the start has been ‘keep it simple and keep it dirty.’ Formed in beautiful, aromatic, downtown Baltimore in 2012, steeped in tradition with an alchemic meld of hardcore and doom metal infused by guitarist Matt Crocco (Iron Boss, Rancid Decay), vocalist and bassist Ned Westrick (Indictments, Ironchrist), guitarist Corey Fleming, and drummer Ryan Larkin.

Arriving on August 16th from Grimoire Records, ‘BAD BLOOD’ is the second album from LIFETIME SHITLIST. Set for release nearly two years to the day since their well-received 2017 full-length debut ‘Slow March’, the forthcoming ‘BAD BLOOD’ is eight songs of wonderfully brutal, unyielding reality from an intensely broad-minded band. More heaviness, more speed, more filth.

Guitarist Matt Crocco chimes in on the new album:

“We worked hard on these songs and, against all odds, I think we’ve put out a killer record. Ned brought his bass back into active status for this one and, like the amazing bastard he is, now handles dual-duty on vocals. We just want to get the music out there and into everyone’s ears.”

‘Bad Blood’ Tracklist:
01. Bad Blood
02. Uncanny Valley
03. Double Blind
04. Not Yet
05. Proud Boys
06. Everyone Thinks They Will Survive The Apocalypse
07. Bonfire of The Vanities
08. The Ballad

‘Bad Blood’ was recorded in the Spring of 2019, by Noel Mueller. The album was mixed and mastered by Noel Mueller. Cover photo by O.G. Mason, with layout by Mueller.

Bad Blood will be released via limited edition CD and digital download on August 16th through Grimoire Records. Pre-ordering is available as of June 26th.

Lineup Announced for Rev. Jim Forrester Benefit Dec. 29

Posted in Whathaveyou on December 21st, 2017 by JJ Koczan

As the details have surfaced over the last 24 hours regarding the tragic death of Rev. Jim Forrester outside the Fells Point, Baltimore, tattoo/piercing shop where he worked, the portrait they’ve drawn has only seemed more senseless. The former bassist for Sixty Watt Shaman, currently of Foghound and Serpents of Secrecy, on the mend from ongoing health issues, finding sobriety, married, getting through, and then shot in the chest outside his place of employment? You’d have a long, long way to go before you ever managed to convince me that makes any fucking sense whatsoever.

One thing Maryland heavy has always done, however, is rally together when the situation calls for it, and yeah, I’d say this situation calls for it. Two stages in Frederick, Maryland, will run benefits next Friday, Dec. 29, with proceeds going to Jim‘s funeral costs and honestly whatever else who the hell cares what they do with the money take all the money just take it please take it and take lasagna too. I’ve heard rumblings about more benefit shows to come and something brewing for Maryland Doom Fest 2018 as well next June, so stay tuned for more and I’ll update as much as I can because Jesus tapdancing Christ, some asshole shot Jim Forrester.

Fucking devastating.

Lineups for the shows at Cafe 611 and Guido’s Speakeasy follow here. If you can’t make it, there’s also a GoFundMe set up linked below that you should donate to. Hell, even if you can go you should donate, because again, just take all the money please take all the money.

Maryland Doom Fest 2017: Set Times Announced

Posted in Whathaveyou on November 14th, 2016 by JJ Koczan

So I guess we’re pretty much ready to roll on Maryland Doom Fest 2017, right? We’ve had the lineup announced, we’ve got the schedule now. Might be another couple weeks getting t-shirts together — and hoodies; should’ve gotten a hoodie this year, which admittedly is something that occurs to one way less at the end of June than in mid-November — but then I’d say we’re about good to go. No need to wait until next summer on it. Let’s do this thing.

Maybe that’s just me being excited at the prospect of that Friday night lineup, which seems particularly strong front to back — not to take away from any of the other days, but you know I dig me some Lo-Pan — but either way, if Maryland Doom Fest‘s now-three-year tenure has been marked by anything it’s a lack of bullshit. A fervent get-down-to-business-and-kick-as-doing-it mentality. It’s perhaps the most “Maryland doom” aspect to the whole event. Maryland Doom Fest 2017 is clearly no different. Here we are more than half a year from the event kicking off and I know what time I need to be there on Thursday to watch Spillage start the pre-party. This is information I’m glad to have.

If your calendar isn’t marked yet, you might want to get on that:

Underdogma Announces Lineup for Go Down Fighting Tribute to Nazareth

Posted in Whathaveyou on June 18th, 2015 by JJ Koczan

It’s been a minute, but there was a time when Underdogma Records proliferated a brand of heavy rock that stood right in line with their contemporaries in the likes of Small Stone and Tee Pee. Between about 2000 and 2009, Underdogma belted out killer offerings from bands like Sunnshine, The Rubes, Ironboss, Gate 9, Crom, Throttlerod and We’re all Gonna Die, spanning a genre range of heaviness that had its underlying identity in a running theme of grit and aggression. Tee Pee went psych, Small Stone got fuzzier, but Underdogma‘s trade was generally in dirtier, meaner fare.

Their Judge Not compilation from 2000 is still worth tracking down if you can find it, boasting cuts from Solace, Solarized, Calamus, The Quill, Satellite Circle, Raging Slab, Pale Divine and many, many others, and knowing that is part of why the announcement of Underdogma‘s return with the Go Down Fighting heavy rock tribute to Nazareth caught my attention. No release date has been named yet — and I wouldn’t want to try to pin something like that down — but a partial tracklisting has been posted, and with the likes of Abrahma, Against the Grain, Shatner and Argus involved, among many others of course, and more to come, it seems like they could come back with plenty of wallop.

That tracklisting follows here. Note the prospect of Solace recording a new track for the tribute. Makes one wonder just how much of a return to activity theirs might be:
