Goliathan issue their new EP, Albion, this Friday, Nov. 16, on Metal Assault Records with a release show to coincide at 5 Star Bar in their native Los Angeles (info here). The instrumentalist L.A. four-piece who share their name with Weedeater‘s 2015 album released their debut, Awakens, in 2016, and in Albion they offer three tracks and 24 minutes not of stoner sludge, but of more intricate post-metal and modern doom. “Albion,” “Vaalbara” and “Aberration” are progressive not in the sense of being a technical showcase — they clearly know what they’re doing, but nobody’s trying to put on a clinic — but in terms of the life breathed into the arrangement of sections, the flow of the material, and the interweaving of the two guitars from Shawn Doster and Kevin Cogill, as well as the overarching atmosphere of foreboding that seems to permeate the material. With pro-shop drums from Philip Bailey and the low end weight of bassist Neal Gardner anchoring, the band engage in conscious exploration that holds firm to considerations of structure along with tonal impact.

And “tonal impact” is a prevalent factor pretty much from the start of the leadoff title-track onward. An initial chug would seem to put Goliathan in a place somewhere between Isis and Russian Circles and the Ufomammut/YOB-style kosmiche, but they’re not really content to stick to one or the other, and are clearly more interested in developing their own take than emulating that of others. The build happening in “Albion” is based around that chug, which becomes a theme Goliathan Albionaround which the song is based in its early going, but a break in the middle third to ambient spaces does well in shifting the mindset toward a more linear stretch that builds from its airiness to heft-laden post-rock in its finish. Feedback echoes out and Bailey‘s drums launch “Vaalbara” with Gardner soon joining before the guitars lurch to life, but while the centerpiece is the shortest inclusion at 7:38, it marks a change in the construction from the eight-minute opener before it, taking a more straightforward approach as opposed to the melding of two disparate movements together, crafting a fluidity that’s enacted without molten effects overload but consuming even in its directed charge. Resolution comes in about the last minute, which sees the drums pull back and the guitars exhale some of the tension that’s been mounting, creating a wash of distortion that carries on a fade into “Aberration.”

Call me crazy, but with a song called “Aberration,” it doesn’t seem so unreasonable to think that might be where a band is changing it up. To a degree, that’s what happens in the finale, but really it’s more about bringing everything together in terms of the underlying rhythms and the guitars working overhead. A series of start-stops in the first two minutes smooths into a melodic roll before a lumbering nod and subsequent chug-out take hold, the latter sustained for an almost maddening amount of time. As the 8:47 closer works into its final third, Goliathan once again find their footing in a push of engrossing tonality and crash, but the last minute is dedicated to a return to the prior staccato-ism, giving yet another sense of there being a plot followed all along. And so there has been. More so than one might think to look at the runtimes of the songs themselves, Albion is a pretty efficient in-and-out listening experience, tracked live but with a steadiness to its execution that speaks to a burgeoning level of patience in their craft. I would not be surprised if the quiet stretch in “Albion” led to more such developments, and likewise, if the stomp of “Aberration” did the same, however much of an outlier it may be positioned as being for now.

You can hear Albion in its entirety on the player below ahead of the official release tomorrow, followed by the band’s bio, which is full of ‘L.A. band story’ stuff that’s always a good time.

Please enjoy:

The idea of Goliathan first came about in 2006 when Philadelphia punk veterans, childhood friends and longtime artistic co-conspirators Shawn Doster and Kevin Cogill found themselves living together in Los Angeles after their tour van broke down. It was then that the duo started to explore moodier and more mature frontiers, transcending the boundaries of the blackened crust music Shawn had been writing up to that point. After gestating for a full ten years, Goliathan finally found steady footing with Neal Gardner and Philip Bailey completing a perfectly balanced, permanent lineup. In 2016, the band released their debut EP Awakens, and began performing locally, garnering a unanimously awe-struck reaction from all who would bear witness.

Neal Gardner is an accomplished and versatile composer, producer, and educator, masterfully fluent in music theory who has found a home writing and playing bass in Goliathan. Drummer Phillip Bailey was a founding member of Systematic, discovered by Metallica’s Lars Ulrich, and signed to his Elektra imprint The Music Company before moving on to do session work in the Bay Area and Los Angeles. Shawn and Kevin (a.k.a. “Skwerl”) flank the rhythm section with dueling guitars and a telepathic chemistry refined over nearly 25 years of playing together.

Following up their 2016 debut, Goliathan is now ready to release a 3-track monsterpiece called Albion, recorded in Lincoln Heights by Manny Nieto (Health, Trash Talk, The Breeders), mixed by Sean Beavan (NIN, Marilyn Manson, Slayer), and mastered by Maor Appelbaum (Faith No More, Rob Halford). Albion is releasing on CD, LP and digital formats on November 16 2018 via Metal Assault Records.

Weedeater Announces Tour Dates with Telekinetic Yeti & Beitthemeans

Posted in Whathaveyou on June 26th, 2017 by JJ Koczan

Goodness gracious, Weedeater. Leave some touring for the rest of the bands, huh? You know, the North Carolina sludge mainstays weren’t yet done being on the road with Primitive Man back in May before they announced their June tour, and here we are, it’s an off-day in the home stretch of that June run and they’re announcing their next cross-country stint already, which is set to start Aug. 9 and will last a full month from there out. These guys are fucking unreal. You’d think they were a punk band with a bunch of 20-year-olds in it.

They’ve been on the road constantly since at least the start of 2016 supporting 2015’s Goliathan (review here) album on Season of Mist, and if you want to note something particularly encouraging about this run and really their touring in general it’s that they take younger bands out with them and have a well-established reputation for showing everyone they bring out a good time while also being absolute professionals at what they do. Weedeater touring with Telekinetic Yeti on the latter’s most significant run to-date? That’s awesome. I hope it goes well. Nobody seems to break up immediately after touring with Weedeater — hell, Beitthemeans did a stint with them earlier this year — is all I’m saying. Sometimes that kind of thing happens with other bands.

Dates follow — including stops at Crucialfest and Psycho Las Vegas — as announced by Tone Deaf Touring today:

Weedeater Announce Even More Touring for June

Posted in Whathaveyou on May 3rd, 2017 by JJ Koczan

Last time we heard from North Carolina sludge mainstays Weedeater, they were announcing a tour. This time? They’re announcing another tour. So it goes. At this point, as they wrap up a West Coast run with Primitive Man that met up this past weekend with The Obsessed, Karma to Burn and Lo-Pan, it would be more surprising if Weedeater didn’t announce a subsequent stretch of road time. If they, you know, actually took a couple months off to write a new album or something. Doesn’t seem like we’re there yet.

They do have a month between the current tour, which ends this coming Sunday, and the start of the next one, which finds them playing — among other places — at Dingbatz in Clifton in my beloved Garden State. Definitely a show I’d hit if I still lived in New Jersey. They’ll be in the company of Black Wizard and Serial Hawk as well, showing pretty much everybody how it’s done in terms of survival, longevity, and kicking ass on the road night after night, tour after tour, riff after riff, drink after drink. As the years go by, it seems like Weedeater are that rare band who are truly unstoppable.

Weedeater Couldn’t Stop Touring if They Wanted To. I Don’t Think They Want To.

Posted in Whathaveyou on March 30th, 2017 by JJ Koczan

North Carolinian sludge mainstays Weedeater haven’t even finished their current tour and have already announced the next one. This, if you’ve been paying attention, you already know is kind of how it goes with Weedeater. Yes, they’re still out supporting 2015’s Goliathan (review here), and I think they’re going to be for a while yet. I mean, it’s not exactly as if they’re doing shit tours at this point. These are good rooms and good bands they’re playing with. Weedeater and Primitive Man? What are you gonna see in your town that night that’s heavier? Not much.

Oh yeah, and then they meet up with The Obsessed and Karma to Burn and Fatso Jetson for a few nights on the West Coast. Hell’s bells. People will be talking about those shows for years. Years. Imagine being fortunate enough to be in the path of that tour. I mean, really.

The PR wire takes it from here:

Next month, North Carolina sludge mainstays Weedeater head out alongside heavy rockers ASG on a Southern US tour. The riotous and by-now-more-or-less-legendary-on-stage trio are supporting their 2015 album, Goliathan (review here), which also served as their label debut on Season of Mist and offered some subtle progressive flashes to go with their groundbreaking, searing nod.

You can hear the record in full below, and I know from past experience that the notion of free Weedeater stuff hardly needs selling on my end, but suffice it to say that if you want to get in on some no-cost vinyl, this is a damn good way to do it. And if you’ve never seen them before or if you have, make sure you catch them on the road next month and into the start of April. Dates follow:

Free Weedeater. It’s an idea whose time has come. The North Carolina trio just wrapped an East Coast tour with Kings Destroy in support of their new album, Goliathan (review here), which is their fifth long-player and their first for Season of Mist, and today I’m thrilled to be able to host this giveaway for a Goliathan CD and t-shirt!

You know the protocol by now, just enter by leaving a comment on this post and a week from now (or thereabouts) I’ll dig through and pick a name and an email address at random and notify the winner. It’s not necessarily a formal contest, but if you wanted to name your favorite Weedeater album title puns/wordplays in the comment, that might be taken into account when the winners are chosen. At very least it gives you something to put in the comment.

Just for easy reference, here they are:

  • …and Justice for Y’all
  • Sixteen Tons (not really wordplay, but still a cool title)
  • God Luck and Good Speed
  • Jason… the Dragon
  • Goliathan

All of the above were reissued last year by Season of Mist as well. If you haven’t heard Goliathan yet, Weedeater‘s latest swampsterpiece is a high point in their sludgy assault, new drummer Travis Owen (ex-Artimus Pyledriver) fitting right in alongside bassist/vocalist “Dixie” Dave Collins and guitarist Dave “Shep” Shepherd. Tracks like the weirdo banjo blues “Battered and Fried” and the full-tonal thrust of “Bow Down” find the band toying with expectation like so many beaten livers, and the result across the board is a record both entirely their own and pushed further than ever before into that strange, malevolent world they create.

Sound like something you’d want to win? It is. Have at it. God luck to all who enter, and good speed to Season of Mist for letting me host the giveaway.

Weedeater, Goliathan: Battered and Fried

Posted in Reviews on June 2nd, 2015 by JJ Koczan

weedeater-goliathan

For those who would be inclined to do so, there are really two ways to take on listening to Weedeater at this stage in their career. One can take a record like the 10-track/34-minute Goliathan, the fifth full-length of their 17-year tenure, first for Season of Mist and first with drummer Travis “T-Boogie” Owen, as a primer for the live experience. No doubt that’s where the hard-touring Wilmington, North Carolina, outfit has always made their primary impact both sonically and as a spectacle, guitarist Dave “Shep” Shepherd calmly oozing tone on one side of the and bassist/vocalist “Dixie” Dave Collins bugs out his eyes and lets loose both a wave of consuming low-end and a visceral rasp, stomping his foot, banging his head, pounding whiskey, and just maybe vomiting, all the while. One can listen to tracks like “Cain Enabler,” “Goliathan” and “Claw of the Sloth” and imagine the riots incited by the band, who’ve been on the road since long before anyone showed up to see them and have the presence to show for it, up to and including Owen‘s turned-sideways kit as part of the show. One can take Goliathan on that level and be stoked to see Weedeater the next time they roll through. I won’t argue against approaching the album that way. It works, it’s valid, and Steve Albini‘s production, as it did on 2011’s Jason… the Dragon (review here), rightly plays to the rawness of the band’s approach, obviously going for a “live” or at very least organic sound.

The other way to listen to Goliathan, however, is as the most forward-thinking album Weedeater have ever done. Yes, there’s a lot about it that remains intact from their past work. Collins still loves his puns, as “Battered and Fried,” “Cain Enabler” and the epilogue “Benaddiction” remind — the latter an answer to the introduction “Processional,” playing off the band’s Southern and/or Baptist roots — but there’s more going on than that and the expectation-meeting quota of swing (even with Owen in place of Keith Kirkum, this element remains) and vicious extremity of sludge. The opener and closer, for example. “Procession” leads the way into Goliathan with quiet keyboards and duly evangelical flourish of lap steel guitar, Collins adding a semi-spoken grunt of a verse to the mix, and while the progression itself, if it was transposed to full-blast guitar, bass and drums, would be right in Weedeater‘s familiar domain, the opener’s turn of arrangement sets up Goliathan‘s more adventurous approach. Jason… the Dragon had these turns as well, and much to its benefit, but Goliathan uses them more efficiently, and that goes for “Procession,” the spacey guitar minimalism of “Benaddiction,” “Battered and Fried”‘s swampy banjo twang. Even the penultimate “Reprise,” in revisiting the title-track’s steady roll, shows Weedeater with more of a clear head for songwriting and a full-album presentation than they’re often given credit for having, and add to that the speedy punkish weirdness of a song like “Bully,” of which the verses seem to be little more than taunts, and Goliathan becomes an even more nuanced experience.

weedeater (Photo by Scott Kinkade)

That’s not to say there isn’t plenty of bludgeoning as well, nor that said bludgeoning isn’t as righteous as any Weedeater have presented before. The vocals on “Cain Enabler” are near-painful to the ear for the permanent damage one imagines they might’ve caused Collins‘ vocal cords, and as the longest track at 5:25, “Claw of the Sloth” seethes and writhes with a brutality all the more prevalent for how readily the band seems to wield it, and whether it’s a more upbeat progression like that one, a mid-paced stomper like “Joseph (All Talk)” or the densely toned lurch of “Goliathan” itself, the central vibe of rural strangeness and otherworldly threat remain — monsters covered in mud, no help for miles. CollinsShepherd and Owen capture many of the aspects of Weedeater‘s sound that has made them the pivotal act within underground heavy they’ve become, but it also goes further than that and pushes not only beyond their earlier albums like their 2001 …And Justice for Y’All debut, 2002’s Sixteen Tons or their 2007 breakthrough, God Luck and Good Speed, but beyond what they accomplished on Jason… the Dragon as well. Perhaps most impressively of all, Goliathan reminds that when it comes to it, Weedeater are going to do whatever they want to do, as they did before their reputation came to precede them and as they no doubt would even if it didn’t. The record’s uncompromising nature just happens to find multiple modes of expression, and in that, the band deliver a work that, on whatever level one might want to take it on, proves worth the effort to do so.
