Live Stream Review: Crowbar, Live at OCD Studios, New Orleans, LA, Feb. 20, 2021

crowbar

Delighted to report that Crowbar are much as you left them: kicking ass. The long-running New Orleans sludge metal progenitors may yet outlast us all, and if they do, they will have earned it. Appearing live for the third time at OCD Recording and Production in Metarie, Louisiana, the band dutifully played a gig they could in another time have been playing in any number of cities in any number of countries the world over to any amount of people. That is to say, Crowbar are playing Crowbar‘s show, no matter what. I’ve seen them in recent years play to thousands, to hundreds and to tens of people, and have never once left feeling like the band could or should have given more of themselves on stage.

I mean that.

Last time I saw Crowbar was in August 2019 (review here) as they were wrapping a month-plus on the road with Corrosion of Conformity and Lo-Pan. Comprised of founding guitarist/vocalist Kirk Windstein alongside Tommy Buckley on drums, Matt Brunson on guitar and Shane Wesley on bass, they were unshakable then, and seeing them on my television on a Saturday afternoon livestream hardly felt different from their point of view. I’m sure it was, but they played their set like it was a source of pride, and one imagines it is. When it was done, as ever, I felt ready to buy a shirt.

They played the songs they would have to play — “Self-Inflicted,” “Planets Collide,” “All I Had (I Gave)” — with the latter two closing out, as well as some more recent highlights like “Walk With Knowledge Wisely” and “Cemetery Angels” from 2014’s Symmetry in Black (video posted here) and 2011’s Sever the Wicked Hand (review here), respectively. Kind of a surprise to have 2016’s The Serpent Only Lies (review here) unrepresented, but this is Crowbar‘s third stream, so maybe they’ve visited it elsewhere. In any case, “Cemetery Angels” — complete with what Windstein called the “proper half-time New Orleans-style” chugging end — was heavy enough to fill any perceived gaps that might’ve cropped up.

For my own viewing pleasure, to have “Thru the Ashes (I’ve Watched You Burn)” along with the more staple “The Lasting Dose” from 2001’s Sonic Excess in its Purest Form was a highlight, and a couple fan-nods in the form of “Waiting in Silence” from the band’s 1991 debut, Obedience Thru Suffering, and “New Man Born” from 1998’s Odd Fellows Rest — which Windstein noted were the first song the band ever wrote and a song they’d only played twice, respectively — found likewise welcome.

crowbar live stream banner

But let’s face it, you’re not coming out of watching Crowbar in-person or otherwise feeling like you didn’t get your money’s worth. For as t-shirt-and-beer as their aesthetic has always been, they’re a professional band and have been for decades. Watching my toddler son dance in circles and play bells along with “Planets Collide” didn’t lessen that any. The highest compliment I can pay it is it felt like seeing Crowbar.

I’ve talked to a few artists in the last couple weeks on the record and off about the livestreaming form as a way to connect with their audience — no one in Crowbar, so I don’t necessarily know how they feel about it — but a lot of what I’ve heard rounds out to missing audience feedback, be it actual applause or just the energy of a room anticipating what the next song is going to be. Even if someone’s aware of a live chat happening while they’re playing, you can’t really stop playing music and check what’s being said without derailing your set — maybe in a tuning break? But Crowbar didn’t do that. The camera faded out after each song and brought up a title card for the next one, then Windstein either introduced it or they just started playing.

Without trying to speak for anyone else who’s watched this or any other livestream, I know that the appreciation I have for being able to see Crowbar playing a set goes beyond that set itself. You know what I mean? Not only is it comforting to know that the steamroller of heavy that this band is still exists somewhere out there, but if it’s not a direct back and forth with their fans — and let’s be honest, it’s a way for the band to bring a little cash too; not nearly enough to cover missing a tour, but every little bit counts — it’s a way for them to offer something that, despite being so aurally grueling, is kind of comforting in its own way.

So no, streaming isn’t the same vibe as a live show. It was never supposed to be and it never will be. But shit, I was happy to watch this band, and they delivered the quality performance that one could only hope for and expect each time they step on stage.

Ultimately it was Crowbar being Crowbar, and god damn it, that’s sludge you can rely on.

And yeah, I did buy a shirt.

Des Kensel Leaves High on Fire

Posted in Whathaveyou on July 25th, 2019 by JJ Koczan

Some drummers are time-keepers, some are fill factories, some are mathematicians. Des Kensel was the fierce charge that made High on Fire both a thrash band and so much more. As a founding member alongside guitarist/vocalist Matt Pike, his impact on the band’s sound has been immeasurable and defining both for his own outfit and those who’ve worked under their considerable influence throughout the last two decades. Des Kensel leaving High on Fire — after winning a Grammy, no less — is a big deal. He will not be easily replaced.

High on Fire have newly announced Fall tour dates with Power Trip and I’ve yet to see word on who will take on the drummer role either as a fill-in or full-time member of the band. Either way, Kensel’s loose bit technical style was a big part of the personality of High on Fire and that is something that will invariably change in the wake of his departure. Of course, good luck to him on his future endeavors and to the band for continued domination.

As posted on the social medias:

High on fire des

As a founding member of High On Fire, I feel blessed to have spent the last 21 years traveling around the world pursuing my childhood dream to write and play music. After eight albums, countless tours, and a Grammy win, I am very thankful for what we have been able to accomplish as a band.

Being a full time professional musician can have its challenges. One gets through those challenges with patience, hard work and perseverance. After much consideration, it is time for me to announce that I will no longer be performing with High On Fire. I will now be focusing on new opportunities and spending time with my family.

I would like to sincerely thank all of our fans for your support throughout the years. Without you, none of this would have been possible.
Lastly, I would like to wish my band-mates the best of luck in the future.

Des Kensel.

Crowbar Post “Falling While Rising” Video; December Tour Announced

Posted in Bootleg Theater on November 3rd, 2016 by JJ Koczan

crowbar-photo-by-jimmy-hubbard

In case you didn’t feel the earth shake at the time, New Orleans sludge progenitors Crowbar released their latest album, The Serpent Only Lies, last week. Out through eOne Heavy, it follows 2014’s Symmetry in Black and 2011’s Sever the Wicked Hand (review here) as the Kirk Windstein-led outfit continue their progression from an ’00s metal style back toward the lurching and roughed-up Sabbathian plod of their earliest work. One can hear that process taking place in the track “Falling While Rising,” which in addition to the sound, also provides a signature Crowbar approach in its downer lyric and Windstein‘s unmistakably guttural vocals.

The Serpent Only Lies is the 11th Crowbar album, so it’s not surprised to find them sounding very much in their element on it, but like the most landmark of multi-decade-spanning metal bands — your Iron Maidens, your Slayers; groups who’ve influenced a generation — their delivery remains powerful. Fact is, Crowbar belong in that class of acts, even if their aesthetic has always been in search of something rawer, and “Falling While Rising” demonstrates their root contribution to what sludge became in their wake, both around the fertile New Orleans scene and worldwide. As many acts who’ve tried, there’s still nobody who does Crowbar better than Crowbar.

They’ve got tour dates with Goatwhore newly announced for December. You’ll find them under the video and the PR wire info below.

Please enjoy:

High on Fire Post “The Black Plot” Video

Posted in Bootleg Theater on September 16th, 2016 by JJ Koczan

high on fire (Photo by Jimmy Hubbard)

High on Fire just keep killing it. To the point that it’s almost moot to say so. I mean, of course they’re killing it. That’s what they do. They find it, they kill it. They’ve got a tour coming up alongside Sweden’s Meshuggah, and from where I sit the pairing couldn’t be more appropriate even though the two bands don’t have much in common sonically beyond basic onslaught of volume. They’re both among the most important metal bands of their generation, and they’ve both cast a net of influence that ranges years and knows no borders. They’ll invariably draw different crowds. Will the djent types get the raw force with which High on Fire present themselves on stage? Will the beer-guzzlers be able to keep up with Meshuggah‘s algorithmic patterns? At the end of the night, it won’t matter. Every room will be flattened.

To the issue at hand: High on Fire have a new video for “The Black Plot,” which comes from their 2015 album, Luminiferous (review here). That record was arguably the band’s most furious yet, but also found them delving into a more melodic approach and expanding on what they do in a few key ways, building on the foundation of intensity that has only come to sustain them more and more. Well, “The Black Plot” is less about that than straight-up pummel, but fortunately, that’s also a pretty excellent representation of what the band is all about. And as to the clip itself, it’s by Skinner and Hey Beautiful Jerk and it’s suitably insane. You can watch it for yourself and see if you can keep up. I’m not sure I can.

Tour dates and comment via the PR wire follow the video below. Enjoy:

HIGH ON FIRE Unleashes “The Black Plot” Animated Video

Power Trio’s Critically Acclaimed Albums ‘Snakes for the Divine’, ‘De Vermis Mysteriis’ and ‘Luminiferous’ See Limited Edition Cassette Release

World-renowned heavy metal power trio HIGH ON FIRE has premiered a new music video for the song “The Black Plot”. Created by Skinner and Hey Beautiful Jerk, “The Black Plot” video, which made its broadcast debut on Adult Swim, is an animated tour de force and a wild psychedelic fantasy epic. “The Black Plot” is taken from HIGH ON FIRE’s latest album, Luminiferous.

“I wanted to make an animated short film with Hey Beautiful Jerk, I just didn’t know how completely crazy it would get,” says Skinner. “At first I thought we should do a real simple story with action fights to wear down the timing a little bit. But then I thought, fuck it, here’s a super complicated story with a million characters and it’s off the wall crazy and shit. Wanna do it?”

“This has definitely been the most challenging and the most rewarding project in the history of Hey Beautiful Jerk,” adds the team of Mark Szumski and Gina Niespodziani. “Creatively, we did not make many concessions and we really pushed ourselves to see how far we could take this thing. It worked.”

Additionally, HIGH ON FIRE’s celebrated albums Snakes for the Divine, De Vermis Mysteriis and the aforementioned Luminiferous, are available on cassette for the very first time via eOne. The cassettes, released as a limited edition bundle pack, can be purchased now, at this location.

HIGH ON FIRE will tour North America this fall as direct support to Sweden’s Meshuggah. The titanic team-up will kick off on October 11 in Atlanta, GA, running through November 6 in Silver Spring, MD.

High on Fire Touring Australia/New Zealand in Feb.; North American Dates Announced

Posted in Whathaveyou on November 17th, 2015 by JJ Koczan

high on fire (Photo by Jimmy Hubbard)

In about two months’ time, High on Fire will cover ground on two sides of the planet. It’s not their first time in either territory, of course, but a pretty impressive feat when one considers the amount of geography they’re taking on and the fact that 18 years on from getting together, they continue to tour like 20-year-old punk rockers. Their latest, Luminiferous (review here), is out on eOne Music, but you’re already well aware of that, because it’s High on Fire. They may be a known quality, but that doesn’t make their live show any less devastating.

They hit Australia and New Zealand in February, and are back in the US in March to take part in the Decibel tour with Abbath. I cobbled together details from the PR wire:

Posted in Whathaveyou on May 12th, 2015 by JJ Koczan

high on fire

June 16 is the release date for High on Fire‘s new album, Luminiferous, and today the fury-heavy trio have announced a North American tour starting in July with support from Pallbearer, Lucifer and Venomous Maximus, because I guess if you’re going to do something, do it in style. The band released a new track today called “The Black Plot” on some other site, but the tour dates and a live video of the same song are below, along with the art and tracklisting for the Kurt Ballou-produced Luminiferous.

It’s all straight off the PR wire:

Universally recognized as one of the most potent acts in music today, HIGH ON FIRE creates molten heavy metal that merges primal fury and aggression, blackened bombast and hall of fame heaviness. The group’s seventh studio album, Luminiferous, is a supersonic exercise in conquest by volume, delivering calculated catharsis as a volcano of revolving riffs and hailstorm of thundering drums combine to beam a blazing spotlight towards the future of modern metal music.

“We’re doing our part to expose The Elite and the fingers they have in religion, media, governments and financial world downfall and their relationship to all of our extraterrestrial connections in the race to control this world,” comments vocalist / guitarist Matt Pike. “Wake up, it’s happening. All while we stare at a socially engineered lie we think of as normalcy. Unless we wake from the dream, there will come true doom.”

After nearly two decades of trailblazing new passageways to heaviness, HIGH ON FIRE’s strong, stunning archetype continues to both sharpen and evolve; the trio’s vision has never been clearer. The Riff, as always, is King.

Track listing:
1.) The Black Plot
2.) Carcosa
3.) The Sunless Years

High on Fire to Release Luminiferous on June 23

Posted in Whathaveyou on April 15th, 2015 by JJ Koczan

high on fire

Can it be a coincidence that the same week Game of Thrones comes back on to put us all in a mindset of battleaxe beheadings and medieval destruction is the same week the first details of High on Fire‘s much anticipated new album, titled Luminiferous, begin to surface? If you don’t see the correlation between the two, it’s wanton slaughter, which is something in which the trio of Matt PikeJeff Matz and Des Kensel have always specialized. This past weekend, they were at Kirk Von Hammet’s Fear FestEvil (get it?), and no doubt more tour dates will surface when the time is right. They’ve never been ones for holding still.

It’s a good morning for heavy metal:

Crowbar Unveil New Video for “Walk with Knowledge Wisely”

Posted in Bootleg Theater on May 30th, 2014 by JJ Koczan

To be perfectly honest, the video below for “Walk with Knowledge Wisely” from Crowbar‘s latest outing, Symmetry in Black, is the first I’m hearing of the record. A “promo stream” for the album, which came out on Tuesday, has been sitting in my inbox for a few weeks, but I haven’t clicked on it, because what the hell? I click on it, feel the need to review it, take the time, dig the album, and then add it to the growing list of CDs I want to buy but can’t afford. Super. Better to save myself the trouble of being bummed out and not listen in the first place.

“Walk with Knowledge Wisely” has some continuity with “The Cemetery Angels” (video here), which served as a single from 2011’s Sever the Wicked Hand (review here), in that it rounds out with a massive-sounding slowdown. They don’t milk quite as much this time around — not that I’ll complain either way — but the point definitely gets made, and the point seems to be that well over 20 years on, Crowbar still serve as a litmus test for sonic weight.

Looks like they’ll get on that list after all. It goes like this:

2. Symmetry In White
3. The Taste Of Dying
